yep davech , certainly not Andys finest , but as long as he gets the W

Indeed. Getting to the next round is all that's important at this stage.

If Berankis was as brave on the important points as he is on the unimportant points, Andy would have been finding it harder still. Anyway, not far to go till the finishing line now! *antijinx*

Cilic out! del Potro out!
Andy very kindly just letting us have tennis until Laura arrives on court - not.
OK. No more hiccoughs. C'mon Andy!

Manaus
19-01-2013, 06:21
Seppi just beat Cilic too. Seeds in Andy's part of the draw dropping out.

Andy wins, ok wasn't the best performance but toughs it out and I'm sure he'll go up a few gears. Berankis certainly had a few moments and a talented player.:clap::clap::thumbup:

Thank heavens for that! Perhaps it will do Andy good to have come through a testing encounter. Berankis could be seriously good if he remains injury free.

I'd much rather Andy played his best in the second week of a grand slam tournament than in the first. Hopefully that's what we're going to get.

Manaus

Lol Courier asking about Andy not being happy during the match, Andy responded saying that Courier has gotten upset plenty of times himself!
Good interview.

Excellent from murray. Always good to win a natch when not playing yiur best without dropping a set. Not tempting fate but the draw really has opened up . Good record against Simon and Del P out. Andy wont be saying it to the medis but he will be having a wry smile at that.

Sallydaisy
19-01-2013, 06:31

I'm glad he's kept the first 3 matches to 3-setters too which helps to conserve his energy for Wk 2.

His next match could be interesting; he's got a very good H2H v Gilles Simon who didn't play so well at the end of last year whereas he admitted to Jim Courier on court just now that he sometimes struggles against Monfils. However, Gael is only just back on the tour so mayhap a bit match rusty.

Bardot
19-01-2013, 06:32
Congratulations Andy, playing well when needed. :skippy::boogie::thumbup:

He said in the interview his timing has been off in practice and it continued today.

Well straight sets and del Potro out. We would all have taken that beforehand I think!

Andy seems pretty chill with Darren Cahill. Says he hopes the French match later goes on a long time and complimented Darren on his suit

So glad Andy managed to win in straight sets. Hope he can now iron out a few of the niggles- he mentioned his timing; his shoulder seemed to be causing a distraction early on; and I thought he looked a bit pale and weary, and wondered if the hot conditions were getting to him (unsurprisingly).
Here's wishing him luck in the next match.

Yet to see Andy's match
All the time I'm seeing the scores really carefully :D

SamP
19-01-2013, 10:18
I woke up at 3.30, checked twitter on my phone, he didn't appear to be on yet...set my alarm for 4.15 and woke up at 8am. Nevermind.

Didn't sound like a classic, but glad he's through again in straight sets. I would have liked him to have played a better player by this stage, but the fact he's played three consecutive games in the sun, it all feels relative. He's looking in good shape for next week.

If he can get through Monfils or Simon (which looks like whoever wins, will be exhausted) he'll have a pretty straightforward quarter final too.

This could be the easiest Slam draw he'll ever get. Nice to see Fed get the tough one for a change.

I woke up and checked the score when Andy was up 2 sets then when he was 5-4 and serving for the match and went back to sleep quite relaxed! I will try and catch a rerun if I can get the tv working. The dish must be covered in snow :grrr:

At these stages of tournament it's just about winning the matches as quickly as possible even if not playing well and that's what Andy did! Well done to him! I have no doubt Andy will play better next week. And with Monfils struggling slightly...

I have been lucky enough to watch all of Andy's matches so far but I reckon Andy is due some night matches which is not good for me. On Monday I leave home at around 9ish and Friday for the semis I have work at 1. Am mentally preparing myself for probably missing Monday an missing most of the semis :( Hoping he gets through to the final where I have a day off work lol.

It doesn't look like anyone told that to Simon or Monfils . . .

Andy did what he had to, Berankis was playing some inspired tennis at times, so although Andy said his timing is off at the moment, was in practise yesterday too apparently, he had a good workout with Berankis

Haven't had time to look back over this thread so sorry if I repeat something that's already been said.

This was an ugly win but a win nevertheless but I think it took 2 hours 12 mins or something this time. Berankis played some inspired stuff but Andy was out of sorts - serve off, defensive and really quite lucky to come out of this as cleanly as he did - the scoreline doesn't reflect his struggle. In his interview he said that his time has been off in practice since his last match and it was off on court today. That explained a lot. Let's hope it's back on song for the next one.

Alis
19-01-2013, 16:48
That's interesting. From just watching the live scores I thought Andy's serve must have been off too but according to the pundits it was his serve that saved the day. Anyone know which version is correct?

Hawkeye
19-01-2013, 16:53
He pulled out the big serves on the big points.

Yep, on the occasions when Berankis got break points Andy found Aces and/or serves that the Lithuanian couldn't handle. There were quite a few 2nd serves which gave chances to Berankis but he wasn't able to capitalise on them enough to pose a threat to Andy.

BTW Is anybody else noticing the refreshing focus on the future in all of Andy's comments this week. He knows he did not play particularly well in that match but he also knows he has got through the first week just about as cleanly as he would have wished for and it is all about moving on and focusing on the next match. Very constructive!

Already fallen asleep this evening. Now can't decide whether to go to bed and wake up to watch in bed. Will it disturb SG? I'll make up my mind later.

I didn't get up for the match after all. By the time I was going to bed I felt sick nod didn't get up until 10:30 this morning! Still got a headache tonight so hoping I feel better for Andy and Giles.

Haven't got to read through all the posts, anyone want to give me the general forum synopsis? I was worried about Andy and all the shoulder holding at the beginning although the commie seemed to only talk about his shirt being too tight.

Anyway glad it's under the belt, Must be strange playing someone who knows your game so well.

Bit late in asking, but - when Andy won this match and did his traditional "pointing at the sky", did anyone catch what he said? It sounded to me like he was talking in Spanish, but the Eurospot commentators just kept talking all over it!! :P

Take care... :)
