I may soon fall asleep and y'all want to know about the next match.
So, here's the bare bones - 'cos that's about all that will be left after these 2 have finished knocking 6 bells out of each other. And a lot will depend on whether whoever does win today can get out of ICU in time to play Andy.

Muzzah is due to play the winner of Monfils v Simon.
Simon took the first 2 sets and is suffering badly from leg cramp
Monfils has a whopping blister on his racquet hand.
The standard of play isn't great but what's amazing is that either of them are still standing.
EDIT: Gilles Simon finally took it 8-6 in the 5th set despite being barely able to run, helped a bit by Monfils muppeting away most of the chances he had to win the match when ahead!

Anyhow, Andy has a handy H2H of 9-1 v Gilles Simon and 3-2 against Gael Monfils.

Andy's been in the locker room for 7hrs already so he's going to feel a lot fresher than these two. He won't underestimate Gillou and knows his game well having played him 10 times already. They are both counter-punchers from the back of the court so we could see some long rallies again. A possible tactic from Andy would be to make Gilles run whcih will sap the Frenchman's energy - dropshots also come to mind ...
;)

The match is scheduled for 17.00hrs local, 06.00 UK, Monday 21st January.

Allez Andy!!!

Happy that it is Simon - Gael is far more unpredictable and unless Gilles has radically changed his style since the last time they played (doubtful) Andy knows what he is getting. It always seems to be a great match up for Andy and I also think matches against Gilles help Andy improve his rallying, and given his his comments yesterday about mistiming shots, this match might be a good thing for further progress as a whole.

Simon v/s Monfils was EPIC, over 4 1/2 hours and I saw all of it. I killed myself laughing, it was battle of the fittest. Simon won and wonder how he will feel in less than 48hrs. One must see the repeat of that match to be believed.. I hope he does not withdraw because Andy needs this match. Well done Simon as the fans were for Gael. Good luck for next round Andy

Wonder how Gilles will be on Monday ...

Bonnie D. Ford ‏@Bonnie_D_Ford (https://twitter.com/Bonnie_D_Ford) On way out of tennis complex saw Simon inching down the hall w/arm around helper, touching wall for balance. Wouldn't accept a wheelchair.

Alexandra Willis ‏@alex_willis (https://twitter.com/alex_willis) Media announcement. Gilles Simon will not be holding a press conference tonight.
Entirely reasonable. #ausopen (https://twitter.com/search?q=%23ausopen&src=hash)

Not sure if Gillou said this at his on-court presser 'cos I didn't see it (very cruel to interview him anyway since he could barely stand up!) but it's being reported that he commented:

"I think I'm not gonna recover in time for the next match. But I will not have a choice.
The very thought of it makes me wanna cry".

Not on the immediate one - when asked about Andy he said "First of all I have to recover from this one before I think about that match" or words to that effect. He then did one in French for Eurosport which I did not hear, just off the court, so it might have come from there. But not in the one on court.

BTW I think Andy will hopefully be prepared for possibly a different Simon as he might have limited energy and might go and try hit Andy off court if he thinks his only chance is three quick sets.

Gilles Simon is definitely going to take to the court v Andy Murray tomorrow after his Saturday epic, but he doesn't much rate his chances.

Might actually manage to see most of this one - providing they do start about 6am, should get most of it before heading to work and then will just have to follow on Twitter updates.

Poor Simon. He says he'll play, but those legs are going to be very heavy and I imagine he would rather face Andy when in better shape. Andy won't underestimate him though and if Simon has to adjust his game then it might throw up a few surprises. Andy to prevail in 3 though.

I remember Andy playing Simon when the Frenchman was injured before. He just stood blasting winners everywhere. Andy should come through, though.

And so yet again Feddykins gets the night match. I hope Andy (if he wins) gets RLA night time for the quarter - or he would have the prospect of a semi, most probably against Fed, who has got well used to the conditions on RLA at night, while Andy hasn't experienced them at all.

Gillou certainly did a good job of winning yesterday just by standing at the back of the court and blasting winners past Monfils. During the last set he managed to run a few times to get to Gael's dropshots - and, as some of you might remember, Andy has used those as a tactic against Simon before ... so I hope he's practised them today.

They are both counter-punchers so ordinarily we'd expect some long rallies (as with Monfils yesterday) but I hope Ivan will have discussed tactics with Andy and encourage him to keep the points short. We are, hopefully, entering the business end of the Slam and Muzzah needs to continue to conserve energy so I hope we'll see Andy going on the attack, controlling the points and getting Gilles to run.

Andy will also have to ignore that fact his opponent is not 100% fit and play his own game but, with his ruthless hat on, to reach the Quarter-Final he has to win and that'll probably mean a few adjustments of his own to take advantage of the situation in front of him on court.

I'll add the H2H stats to the first post ... Simon beat Murray in 2007 on Clay but Andy has beaten him 9 times since then on clay, hard and grass courts.

IMHO this is Andy's to lose rather than Gilles to beat the Brit.

Simon gave a press conference earlier today - http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/news/interviews/2013-01-20/201301201358658079583.html

There are quite a few references to Andy and the match tomorrow

Q. How are you feeling today after the extraordinary match last night?
GILLES SIMON: Of course a bit tired. Just try to recover as good as possible for tomorrow. Just gonna work on this today.

Q. What is the biggest problem? Forearm or your leg?
GILLES SIMON: It's everything. (Laughter.)
I'm never cramping on the court normally before this one, so it was a very strange feeling for me. I felt at the end of the second set that it will be very hard to continue to play, and I was just hoping I would feel better.
So I decided to rest a little bit on the court, play different tennis for the third and fourth set, and try to give everything in the fifth. But I think I got lucky to win this one, because it was 2 0, and I'm sure that if he had won his game to make it 3 0 it would be an easy win for him.

Q. Could you just clear up for us, please, what happened after the match? Were you taken to hospital, or were you just treated here?
GILLES SIMON: No, just here. But, yes, I was in a bad shape.
I felt I played the end of the match like in a dream, like I was not even on the court. I was just hitting the ball, trying to run, trying to catch it, and not thinking anymore.
I was too tired to be happy or upset or thinking or I think at the end of the match I just, you know, completely lost control.

Q. How many hours of treatment did you need before you could go back to your hotel and go to sleep?
GILLES SIMON: I slept at 5:00, so I think 3:00 or three or four hours.

Q. What sort of treatment? What were you getting?
GILLES SIMON: I don't know. First hour I don't know. First hour I think I just lie down on the table. (Laughter.)
No, I just had to no, there is no miracle, so a massage, stretching, because all the part of the body were painful. Just had to sleep, woke up at 2:00, so I hope I won't play first tomorrow. (Smiling.)
And that's it. Trying to eat well, sleep, stretch one more time this afternoon.

Q. Have you actually asked to play at night, if possible, tomorrow or later in the day?
GILLES SIMON: I think it's gonna be this way, anyway.

Q. You think it's going to be night?
GILLES SIMON: Yeah, you can't put someone the night session and then first match two days after. I will try my best.

Q. What did you think of that match? Because there was one point that lasted 71 shots. There were a couple others that went 47. What was going on there?
GILLES SIMON: We always play some long points with Gaël. I think every match we play, I'm not sure we made it to 70 shots, but 60 at least, for sure.
But usually I know it is hard physically to play against him because the points are long, we have to run. But I felt like I was in good control in the first two sets, and one more time the problem is I couldn't practice as much as I wanted to before this tournament.
I know I was a bit short physically, but after two sets never happen to me to be in that position. So I hope that I would be able to win 6 4, 6 4, 6 3, and it would be nice.
Unfortunately I couldn't make it. Really on the last forehand in the second set I felt like I couldn't move anymore, and then it was a long way to win.

Q. Was it purely cramping? The treatment you were getting was just above the knee.
GILLES SIMON: Yeah. I have the pain here, but one more time, it was too painful everywhere. I don't even know where I had a cramp here, cramp here (Pointing to chin, leg) even not possible to cramp.

Q. What are your thoughts about playing Murray now? I don't want to worsen your pain, but your record against him isn't that good.
GILLES SIMON: No, you're right. (Smiling.)
And I was in better shape when I was going on the court.

Q. Not in Monte Carlo you weren't.
GILLES SIMON: With Andy, I don't have to explain to you how strong he is. Of course it will be really, really difficult, but at the moment I just happy that I won the last one, and I will just try to go and take my chance even if I don't have a lot of chance to win this one, but this is my job to go on the court and to do the maximum to bother him and to give him a hard time.

Q. Just to clarify, have you actually been told when you're playing tomorrow or have you put in a request?
GILLES SIMON: No.

Q. So you're waiting to hear?
GILLES SIMON: I don't decide. (Smiling.)

Q. Are you worried about how your body will react tomorrow?
GILLES SIMON: Yes, but I have no choice. So one more time, I will just do my best to be ready for the match. And the thing is it's difficult to win 6 2, 6 3, 6 2 against Andy. I'm not sure if we play longer than that that I will be able to make it to the end.
One more time, I just want to go on the court and try my best at the moment, and we will see tomorrow.

Q. Did the doctors advise you at all to pull out of the tournament, or is it your determination that's carrying you on?
GILLES SIMON: No, I was worried just a bit, but today was fine. No problem.

Q. A bunch of other players were tweeting during your match about how crazy they thought it was. Did you hear any messages from anybody else about what you did last night?
GILLES SIMON: Yesterday I was really focused on feeling better just, so I will have more time today for this. But the first hours after the match you have to do all you can to feel better, one more time stretch, and so I will do it today and I will check it today.

Q. Andy has worked an awful lot on his physique, and he's got such a strong guy. Do you sometimes wish you could be a big muscled player?
GILLES SIMON: There is no way I will be one day like him, first, because 10 centimeters more is not easy, even if you work out.
But I think he improved a lot. I remember when he was still in the first years. He was an awesome player already, but physically, you know, sometimes he was cramping. I saw him last time. Yeah, he could be tired.
It's a long time I never saw him tired on the court anymore. I know he's working hard outside the court to be ready. That's part of our job.
So for sure he will have the advantage tomorrow for this, but I just want to focus on my game, and then what I can do tomorrow to try to disturb him a little bit.

Q. Do you think the match last night was one of the most difficult matches you have ever played physically?
GILLES SIMON: Yes, of course. I didn't play that often four hours 45 minutes. So I have three or four difficult match in mind, but this one was a special one because I was because one more time, it was the first time in this happen to me on the court, so it was not easy to deal with it.

Definitely one where Andy has to be patient and survive an initial blitz. Although his new strategy is to shorten points and try and conserve energy, there is quite an argument here for having a some extended points in this match!
But patient - we would love him to win it in straights and conserve energy but he must remember if he encounters initial difficulties he just has to keep the match going and going and....

The tournament organisers are allowing 4.5hrs for the Chardy v Seppi and Stephens v Jovanovski.
That's about 3hrs for the men (say 3 sets) and 1.5hrs for the ladies (say 2 sets).
The mens match could take up that time slot alone if they go to 4 or 5 sets - as they could.
And the ladies could also take a couple of hours on top of that.
Murray's Law.

Think I'll get up at 6.30am ... might miss 15/20mins of play but I'll chance it.

I went through the schedules and notice Mr Fed and world #1 have only played on R.Laver while Andy #3 has been shunted between RLaver and H Arena, what does anyone think, is it a good thing or bad for Andy or is it favouritism for #1 & 2 ? Especially Fed who has only played evenings in the cooler, shade of the night. anyone care to comment ? Or am I being paranoid as usual.

As the semis are always night matches on Rod Laver, I guess any player playing all their matches as night matches on Rod Laver could have a slight advantage as all the courts play differently. But then any player playing night matches may end up with a very late night, which may not be an advantage.

You are probably right but as Andy is now getting closer to the top and Fed getting 'bottom heavy' lets not waste our energy!

Sallydaisy
20-01-2013, 23:26
Here's my hypothesis.
The bottom half are due to play their 1/4 finals on Wed and 1/2 finals on Friday.
Mens Final is Sunday. Top half Finalist gets an extra day off (Friday and Saturday).
(The bottom half got their 'extra' day on the first Monday).

All QF are probs on RLA - 1 day and 1 night session. Mens SF's 7.30 RLA both days.
If Fed and Muzzah win tomorrow I think they'll put Fed on as a day match for his 1/4 on Wed so he potentially has the maximum amount of time to recover before a possible SF on Fri night.

Just thinking out loud ...

The matter has clearly been bending the brain of another person!

Not Roger Federer ‏@PseudoFed (https://twitter.com/PseudoFed) Dear @AustralianOpen (https://twitter.com/AustralianOpen) if you could continue my appointment time of late matches you will please the GOAT #yourewelcome (https://twitter.com/search?q=%23yourewelcome&src=hash)

;)

I wonder if Rafa had been the #3 seed whether he'd have been relegated 2 out of 4 times to Hisense? Methinks they'd have had to put Roger on there at least once by now - wouldn't they?

I don't think it matters to be honest.
Andy is a thorough professional and he luuurrrves night matches - especially on hard courts! So even if his SF is his first night match on RLA I think he'll lap it up and especially if his target is Roger.
:p

But he has to win his R4 match first - and a Q/Final - so let's wait and see.

I do think there is a certain favouring towards Fed but hopefully Andy will bring his A game when he reaches the semis and dismiss him :p

If Andy reaches the quarterfinals I do hope they put him on as the night match, so Andy gets used to the conditions, as they differ in the evening to the afternoon. Federer would have an advantage if all of his matches are night matches.

Got up at 5. Have been watching Tsonga/Gasquet. It looked as though the women's match was going to be really quick as the first set was 6-1 but it's gone to a 3rd.

JAMES4578
21-01-2013, 06:27
Tsonga and Gasquet split the first 2 sets but Jo now in control as he took the 3rd 6-3 and 5-1 up in the 4th as Richie has faded. Jovanovski was up 3-1 in the 3rd but now 3 all on Hisense with Murray/Simon to follow.

Morning, all. I didn't expect to be up, but I woke up at 3.45 and couldn't get back to sleep, so I thought I might as well get up as lie there worrying about whether I'll be able to drive to the hospital today - going by taxi costs me £20 a day. . .

Sloane Stephens serving for the match. Come on, win quickly! (I don't care about the result, I just want them off court!) :)

Andy's got another Frenchman to play on Wednesday! He's H2H 4-1 against Chardy but the win for Jeremy was the most recent, 6'4, 6'4 in R16 in Cincy 2012.

By beating the world no. 16 in the last 16, Andy made it 16 wins in a row against French players in slams since that loss to Tsonga at the AO exactly 5 years and 1 week ago. I still remember thinking I'd give that match a miss and get the BOTB results pages ready in the confident expectation that I'd get plenty of other chances to watch Andy play in Melbourne that year ...

Funny to think that before his GEM-bashing streak started, Andy was 1-3 against French players in slams (having lost to Clément at the 2005 US Open and Monfils at RG in 2006 as well) - he is now (in slams):

4-0 v Gasquet
2-1 v Tsonga
2-0 v Simon & Llodra
1-0 v ERV, Prodon, Eyserric, Santoro, Benneteau, Gicquel & Serra
0-1 v Monfils & Clément

The wins have been getting more emphatic as well - today's win is the 7th time (in 12 matches) since the start of 2010 that Andy has beaten a French player in a slam without giving up more than 10 games! Gasquet (3 times) and Tsonga (twice) are the only GEMs who have managed more than 10 in that time.

Glad it was a straight sets win. But Andy still seems out-of-sorts. Hope he can sharpen up for the Chardy match.

Was surprised to see the Andy boyz in his box. Surely they need to be out in the main body of the stadium drumming up support and making a racket? I can't think that Lendl will have appreciated them being behind him.
And I think for Andy too. When he looks up, it needs to be Lendl's stony glare which he sees clearly to get him re-focused.

Just when you think they've been playing well and decide to back them to win they go and lose - and they win when you least expect it almost deliberately to muck up your Pick'em!!!

There are lots more ...
PEM Paella Eating ...
HEM Hamburger eating
VDM Vodka Drinking Muppet (Russian!).

So funny when you hear it explained! How mad do we sound!

I've been wondering whether Andy's problems with timing his shots is because he is practising at Kooyong, which is very similar to RLA, and they keep shoving him on Hisense? If so, assuming all the rest of his matches are on RLA, the problem may solve itself.

That would be a good explanation; he definitely said his timing was off after his match against Sousa (I think?). He played RLA Tues, Hisense Thurs, RLA Sat and now Hisense today.

I am just crossing fingers Andy gets the night match on Wednesday so he one match in similar conditions to the semi, if he gets that far.

Didn't Andy also have a similar problem with the second court at the USO - wasn't that where the Feli Lopez match was?

BTW don't forget that Andy may have won the USO but he did not play seven brilliant matches to do so - a couple along the way were a bit rough and ready and the Birdy match was as much playing the wind as the opponent.
