Short and sharp summary this morning - just like Andy's match today!
He took 1hr and 51mins to burn Char-dy off the court ...
I confess I missed the first set and only made it to the computer just as it ended.
So the following comments are from twitter to give a flavour of how it went.
Brad Gilbert @bgtennisnation (https://twitter.com/bgtennisnation) quick early break for Muzzard, Chardonnay Chardy looked a bit nervy in his 1st match on laver,
seeing a straight forward 3 setter in this one
Neil Harman @NeilHarmanTimes (https://twitter.com/NeilHarmanTimes) There is something excitingly positive in the Murray body language already today.

So, Andy broke Chardy's serve twice and held his own to go up 4-0 in the first set.
Then 'Chardonnay' woke up ... and not only held his own serve but broke back for 2-4.
Neil Harman @NeilHarmanTimes (https://twitter.com/NeilHarmanTimes) A love break, Chardy middling the ball rather well and it is back to 2-4. This Frenchman, il est dangereux
BUT after a hold from Chardy for 3-4 our man regained his composure. Neil again:
A totally wrong-footing ace at 40-30 and Murray holds for 5-3. Responding to danger
Another service hold apiece but that remaining single break was enough for Andy to take the first set 6-4.
The 2nd set began with holds by both players (Andy to love) but then he broke the Frenchman to go ahead 2-1 and did the same in game 5 for 4-1. Another, slightly tougher, hold for Andy and Chardy was 1-5 and serving for the set. Cue another break of serve and a breadstick was in the bag.
6-1 to Andy.
The 3rd set had an inevitability about it. Chardy not only looked tired but his unforced error count was climbing and he was having serious problems with his ball toss so his serve was very 'off'. A quick hold from Muzzah, break and hold again and another break in game 6 put Andy 5-1 ahead and serving for the match. Chardy though had one last hurrah and broke back!!! Any confidence he gained from that disappeared tout-de-suite. As he's done a few time this tournament Andy came back strong and at *30-40 had his first match point.
He didn't waste it ...
GSM Murray 6'4, 6'1, 6'2.
From the comments on the forum and on twitter it could easily have been a triple breadstick.
Perhaps the bakeries in Melbourne need to speak to Monsieur Murray ...
:baguette:
Andy was well in control today - perhaps not yet his AAA game (as we saw during the Olympics Gold Medal match) but confident solid tennis that left Chardy little chance to get past him. He was playing much better than in the previous 4 matches, striking the ball cleanly and hitting winners.
It also seemed that if Chardy HAD begun to play better that Andy would be able to lift his own game to ensure he got the win and go through to the Semi's. In his post-match on-court interview (with Todd Woodbridge) Andy said he was very focussed on winning the match and added:
"today is the best I’ve played all week"
"Won't watch the whole match (Tsonga v Federer)"
"Heading for an ice bath, media which takes about an hour, get something to eat, early night and hope that Roger and Jo play for 4/5hrs"

Job done so far.
5 matches, 15 sets, 8hrs 55mins of play.
Just 2 matches left to go and he's got a lot left in the tank.
Roll on the Semi-Final on Friday - 08.30 here in the UK!
