View Full Version : AO 2013 FINAL: Andy Murray v Novak Djokovic. PRE-MATCH BANTER

The boys are back ... another Slam and another Final for Andy and Nole.
This is an incredible chance for Andy to make history.
No player has won a maiden Grand Slam and then reached the Final of the next one - or won it. Andy has reached the Final so that's 1 step and the next is to find a way past Novak Djokovic again.
The Serb has had today off , and romped through his Semi-Final in 3 sets, so will be perhaps a bit fresher on Sunday than Andy who has a day less to recover. He was probably watching with interest as Fed and Muzz battled it out but will know he's got to play very well to beat Andy.
BBC1 are showing the match with coverage starting at 08.15am Sunday 27/1/13.
Tune in and join us here for 'live' chat and banter.

This is an extract from Andy's Wikipedia page:
Murray vs. Djokovic Main article: Djokovic–Murray rivalry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Djokovic–Murray_rivalry)
Murray and Novak Djokovic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novak_Djokovic) have played each other on 17 occasions, with Djokovic leading 10–7. Djokovic leads 2–0 on clay, 8–6 on hardcourts and Murray leads 1–0 on grass.
The two went to training camp together, and Murray won the first match they ever played as teenagers.
The pair have met 7 times in finals, with Murray leading 4–3. Their most recent final was the 2012 Shanghai Masters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_Shanghai_Rolex_Masters) final, which Murray lost in three sets. Five other finals have been ATP Masters 1000 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATP_Masters_1000) finals, with Murray winning the first three in straight sets, with Djokovic taking the next two.
They also played a nearly five-hour long semifinal match in the 2012 Australian Open (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_Australian_Open), which Djokovic won 7–5 in the fifth set after Murray led by 2 sets to 1.
Murray and Djokovic met again at the London 2012 Olympic Games, with Murray winning in straight sets to progress to the Gold Medal final against Federer.
Murray and Djokovic met again in the final of the 2012 US Open (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_US_Open_–_Men's_Singles_final), the first time the two had ever met at Flushing Meadows, and the second Grand Slam final between the two.
Murray won the final in a five-set match that lasted almost five hours to win his first Grand Slam title. The most recent meeting between the two came in the round robin stage of the 2012 ATP World Tour Finals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_ATP_World_Tour_Finals), with Djokovic coming out on top with a three set win in their 7th meeting in 2012.
They are to meet again at the 2013 Australian Open Final. Former player Boris Becker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boris_Becker) believes this rivalry to be similar to that between Federer and Nadal.
Ben Rothenberg @BenRothenberg
When Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray meet Sunday, Serbia will be the country with the longer Grand Slam drought, for a change. #ausopen

Murray is that physically fit presently that fatigue shouldn't be a decisive issue I feel.
Both formidable players certainly looking forward to the showdown!
I am so glad that I'd already arranged for someone else to take Sunday School this week! :big grin:

I would imagine that Andy was probably expecting a match length of 4 hours. Shorter would have been a bonus (assuming he won), but longer than 4 1/2 or 5 would have presented problems with recovering. He certainly didn't seem unduly fatigued at the end of the match.
I am so glad that I'd already arranged for someone else to take Sunday School this week! :big grin:
Good for you! Unfortunately I haven't!!!!
Although it was 4 hours, it was not physically demanding for Andy, they were short rallies not like Simon/Monfils= 74 shots. Andy needed to be pushed to see what level he is at. It was nothing compared Novak/Wawrinka. Coach knows best what's good for Andy, he is doing a marvellous job so far. I trust and have faith in the duo.
GOOD LUCK ANDY

Aaaarrrggghhhh!! Make your flippin' minds up!
And the next question is, will it STAY on BBC1?
Luckily when ditching our old cassette recorders, we bought two DVR HDDs - one upstairs, one down. I can only get the BBC coverage but I'll set one to record each channel. Trouble is, with a lot of my time being taken up visiting my husband in hospital, I haven't really had time to sort out all their intricacies (we got them one afternoon and my husband had a stroke later that night)

Jonathan Overend @5livetennis (https://twitter.com/5livetennis) @SallyDaisy10is (https://twitter.com/SallyDaisy10is) it's been upgraded to BBC1
So, BBC!, BBCHD, BBC online, BBC Radio5 and Eurosport.
So it seems that the best option is to watch the BBC live stream and listen to the Radio 5 Live commentary (if they are in synch.)
Radio 5 live is usually late.
They will be interviewing Llendl on 5live in the morning. He was interviewed on Eurosport earlier today.

Superstitions 'r us, part 99: Every time I posted "Focus. Safe hold. C'mon Andy" before the service games actually started, Andy held. I answered an email and, a visit elsewhere in the flat, which caused me to be late doing this and guess what....
If I sleep in for some reason, somebody may wish to take on the duties if you are superstitious like me :)
PS I also think Andy will have enough in the tank. I think I only saw noticeable fatigue once towards the end of the fourth (slight grimace) but as has been said not many long points and the fifth was so quick. I also think there wasn't an excess of mental wear and tear as Andy was so clearly the dominant player - except for the two tiebreaks which were over pretty quickly really (nothing like that first set tiebreak against Nole at USO for example!).

For everyone's information:-
BBC HD has a time slot of 08.15 - 14.00 set aside for the match. link (http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbchd/programmes/schedules/2013/01/27)
BBC1 has 08.15 to 12.05 then it should be Sunday Politics and 13.25 a repeat of Call the Midwife S2/ep1.
So, if it went longer than the 3hrs 50mins allowed they could stay on 1 and push back other programmes.

This is possibly not a good stat ... but the 3 Finals played so far have gone according to seeding.
#1 The Bryans in the Mens Doubles
#1 Azarenka in the Ladies Singles
#1 Errani/Vinci took the Ladies Doubles title.

2010 USO, knocked out in R3.
Full table at the bottom of his Wiki page.

Looking at that article I've picked out an extract regarding the Andy/Nole rivalry and added it to the first post of the thread. Some interesting bits ...
The pair have met 7 times in finals, with Murray leading 4–3.
Murray and Djokovic have played each other on 17 occasions, with Djokovic leading 10–7. Djokovic leads 2–0 on clay, 8–6 on hardcourts and Murray leads 1–0 on grass.
Great to see Andy in a Final again.
I only saw the players coming out onto the court for the Djoko/Ferrer match - but it struck me that Djoko was in even more 'strutting mode' than usual [if that's possible]. He looked so confident and determined. I think he's going to be so focused to redress the result of the US Open.
So my fingers are crossed that Andy doesn't get lulled into feeling that he knows Djoko's game so well, that he has a false sense of security- and then gets caught out by Djoko stepping up further and bullying him about the court. It makes me feel a bit jittery, but I'm sure Lendl will be on the case...
Good Luck, Andy! <zen>
I've got a good feeling about this match for Andy. The same feeling I had before the US Open. I hope that's a good sign!
Me 2
I'm not going with statistics I'm going with the New Andy. I used to be sooooooo supersticious, it was unbelievable, sit in the same position during points, watch same TV etc etc and Andy kept losing in the Finals where everyone was saying he would win. Now I just relax and take point by point. Still get butterflies and nervous but I have learnt my lessons the hard way with supersticions.
GO ANDY GO ANDY GO ANDY U CAN DO IT.
Thank you ..and great hopes for Andy!

There was a time when the Djoker strutting would have worried me but we do have a New Andy and maybe ...just maybe....he can repeat his peformance at Flushing Meadow. I'm too superstitious to say he will, but boy I am hoping !
I had to smile reading through this thread - I wonder if Andy has any idea of the agonies we go through, finding channels, re-organising our lives, fretting and stewing for him ?? But he is soooo worth it.
You may all like to know that we flew home from a weeks holiday last evening and the Captain said that he was going to announce the result and that anybody who had it recording may just like to close their ears. They would have soon found out anyways because when he gave out the win there was a spontaneous cheer.....so so nice to hear

I really think that everything about this match this time round is relaxed except for the two players when they go on court.
What was it last year 4-3 in matches to Djokovic. I think they both know they could win and they could lose. They are friends, same age, their teams get on well, etc. They both know, and their fans, all the preparation has been done and it really does come down to best player on the day (unless Djokovic's SF means he is heading off to GOAT territory in which case Andy will need to regroup again, or they do not trade as many breaks as last time because Andy makes his serve more impregnable yet continues to break Nole).
I hope that in the next few years these two are in a lot of finals together and both enjoy the experience!
No I am not going to go so far as to say may the best man win but C'MON ANDY!
Unless my maths is completely off, Andy is currently up to 13 consecutive wins at Grand Slam level! :)
The reason I mention this is because 14 is one of my lucky numbers......... :)
Take care... :)

Djokovic seems to be in his element at the Australian. This is his arena make no mistake about it. Three consecutive AO finals that's unprecedented, favourite and rightly so. Not expecting a win to be brutally honest but I am expecting Murray to match him for large parts of the match and push him to the end. If he does that I'll be happy anything else is a bonus, lower expectations you have harder it is to be disappointed.

Excited and apprehensive at the same time, go for it Andy! Whilst you would have to say Djokovic is still the favourite a top form Murray can certainly challenge him all the way and give himself every chance. if Andy produces a top quality performance I'll be satisfied either way, but of course I'd love him to take another slam!

Hah you mean you haven't read our FTMs?

Morning all! Nerves jangling ....
Come on Andy, win for me on my birthday!!
Yesterday I gave the stat that for 3 out of the last 4 years the player winning the second semi final won the tournament. Eurosport have said that it is 4 out of the last 5!!!!!
Let Andy make it 5 out of 6.
Come on Andy :cheer: :cheer:

They are talking about one needing an edge, I think Andy has it, with Ross. :)
Quite a battle I should think!
Another five setter, then. Possibly.
Here we go! You can do it Andy! :cheer:
Boris Becker says 'Andy in 4'. Love him!
