View Full Version : AO FINAL: Muzzah misses out to Nole, 7'6(2), 6'7(5), 3'6, 2'6
Onwards and upwards. That's my mantra for Andy. See you next time
Was that feather thrown from the crowd? I had assumed it fell from a bird.
Of course it fell from a bird. You can't throw a feather that far.
I think the majority of the crowd were cheering for Andy; he definitely seems more popular there than Nole.

I can't deny im disappointed but the scoreline tells a different story as to how close it really was just the matter of Nole breaking when he needed to and Andy not. Its tough but im hopeful not his last slam final this year just the first of many. Well done Nole and Andy.
Hard luck to Andy! Wasn't his day today! He had chances in the 2nd set to perhaps break and possibly go 2 sets to 0 up buy didn't take the BPs. Then came the bird's feather and the eeky blister and Novak upped his game. Andy said before that it would have been unlikely he'd be at 100% and unfortunately that was true
He'll be back stronger am sure! #alwaysbelieve

All that I will say is that I am so proud of Andy. Nole played so well today and even though I feel that Andy was slightly disadvantaged nothing can be taken away from Djokovic. Andy was near, the nearest he's ever been and one day he will hold that trophy aloft. He will be back, strong and positive and I look forward to this rivalry. Feeling very philosophical and confident for the future. Well done Andy!!

Gutted for Andy and disappointed for us but Andy is not going away. This rivalry with Nole is fascinating to watch and hopefully it's Andy's turn to win next.
Must say it is refreshing to come back on here after being on Facebook. Some people on there are unbelievable! Accusing Nole of doping is really beyond being a bad loser!
I just saw that on facebook too. It seems that some fans are getting as bad as the Fed fans, who've always said that about anyone who beats him. I suppose the Armstrong affair has made everyone think about it more.

That loss came down to just a "Blister" I don't think these commentators talked about that at all, any ladies who has had one from high heels will know how impossible it is to concentrate and push up on it to serve. I'm not making excuses for Andy. Just saying.

I love the fact as always Andy doesn't focus on injury and always plays it down. Its the commies who make it a thing and oh how easily they switch from 'he is the next no 1' to 'he still gets upset at small things, needs to learn how to beat the top three' such turncoats

Serving in high heels must be difficult enough without having a blister as well! ;)
Tomorrow Andy will have 8,480 and Fed will have 10,265.
Just as well he collected another 480 points that will make up for the loss of 300 for reaching Dubai final last year which he has not entered this year.. I understand from what Ross was saying on Eorosport, Andy is going staight to the US to work on his games as he has not been doing so well there for the past couple of years.

I managed to see the first set before I had to go out and Andy played a fab tiebreak to get that first set! However, it was not meant to be and Nole deserved to win in the end. Andy has had a great tournament and as has been said throughout this thread, there is so much to be encouraged by. Andy Murray will get another slam soon (great to say another isn't it?) of that I have no doubt.

Disappointing but Andy didn't seem too down in his presser. When Novak is in that sort of form I dont think anyone can come near holding him. In the first set he was making many errors over-hitting, but once he got that right and got the ascendancy there was never going to be any other result. Andy looked tired to me at the start of the fourth.
Ah well - pretty sure that whatever happens these two will be 1 and 2 for a long while to come

At the bottom of the BBC report (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/21209873) on the match there are always comments - some good, some bad.

I live in Essex & there's an outdoor tennis centre across the road from me.
This morning empty, just taken the dog out for a walk after the ND/AM game & its full of kids.
Stopped to watch & chatted to one of the coaches,he told me ever since AM came onto the scene
& especially since last yr they have a 2 yr waiting list.
This is the effect that AM is having on our kids in GB he's a hero 2 them all
just heard the mini interview with jon overend, andy said a blister was painful, but just have to play through it, nobody loses just cos of a blister

So disappointed for Andy - saw the whole match and I thought it was a really entertaining match with lots of good rallies and great tennis. Andy had the upper hand at the start of the match and if he could just have converted some of those break points the outcome could have been very different indeed. He certainly seemed to be struggling physically towards the end - but then Nole looked to be struggling at the start and got through it.
Good couple of weeks tennis and he can't be disappointed with how it turned out.
losing the second set tie break was critical, andy's final was the game v fedX, and today he didn't have the stamina to outlast djo over 3 more sets. why on earth do tournament organisers allow one finalist to have 2 days before the final and the second only one day?
Well 35 days to BNP Paribas Open.. Can't wait. Only 90 points to defend, hope he wins it and bags 1000 points. Glad he is skipping Dubai, 500 points for Fed to defend. Go Go Del Potro!!!!
great 1st set from Andy !!!! He was bossing Novak around . Then when he lost the 2nd set tiebreak , could unfortunately see him running out of gas . That was hard for me to watch :(
I agree with those of you who have said , that this loss is different because hes already a Champion !!!!! ( and for me because it was Novak , cant bear Fed beating him )

can I just how great it is, the difference in our attitude after an Andy loss! To be laughing at high heels and blisters :bravo:
Well I feel disappointed. Like it was an opportunity missed. Would have liked it to have been closer - and although there are obviously positives to be taken, this time last year it felt like he was closer to getting the measure of Djokovic.
Any link yet to the post-match presser? - it usually helps lift the spirits

Why on earth should it be assumed that just because Andy has won a slam he should now win every one? It just doesn't work like that and the failed tennis players who now act as commentators/pundits/media - and even those who didn't fail - should know better. So many factors add up to win a major. Andy is going great - at some point Novak will have a "dip" and Andy will again capitalise (that's assuming it IS Novak) - no one is invincible - and I trust Ivan to keep our boy on the right track.

So what happened at the US Open? This time last year Andy hadn't won a grand slam. He's more than proved he has the measure of Djokovic but there will be occasions where he will lose, it's sport after all however for the 3rd slam running Andy has put himself in the position of winning and provided us with 2 weeks of great entertainment and a major positive is we can return to a normal sleep pattern. ;)
Had to go out in the middle of the second set. Popped out to the car radio at the end of church and it was almost all over.
Been out the rest of the day, but just watched the presentation.
Congrats to Nole.
Hard luck Andy - we are proud of you!
I managed to stay up and watch the whole match. :sleepy: Went to bed at 5am and managed 4 hours sleep, not bad. I know most of you have been existing on a lot less the last two weeks.
It was hard watching the last set as you could see Andy was struggling. There is no mention of his hamstring, although it looked to me as though he was struggling with more than the blisters. Of course I was struggling myself with the eyelids!!!!!
Congrats to Andy on his 3rd consecutive grand slam final and heres to many more. Love u Andy.:bravo:
The transcripts of the interviews are on the newspaper threads.
Nole indicated that it was a turning point for him when he won the 2nd game of the 2nd set from 0-40 down. If only Andy had won that game, it could have been a whole lot different.
I also notice from Andy's interview that there is a bit of conflict in his answers regarding the blister and the hamstring. At least he seems quite upbeat.
Never mind..no disgrace to lose the the World Number One. You did great Andy. We'' all see you soon. Have a good rest. We love you.

Since no-one in the open - call it serious - era has ever won the Slam following his first, I suppose it was unlikely that Andy would win. In fact he's done better than all the others getting to another final since even Saint Fed only got to the semis the next time around.
He's done so well reaching 3 slam finals and not missing a slam semi for 3 years - or is it 4 ?
Have a rest Andy and we're all waiting to cheer for the next one
I think if Andy had won the second in the tie break, he still probably would have lost sets 3 & 4. No point speculating beyond that.
It was an odd match, probably better quality than some journalists are giving it credit, but I don't think either player played their very best.
I remember when Andy used to say he was going to 'give it his all' and leave 'nothing out there', but his negativity prevented him from really giving fully of himself, to the best of his ability. That just isn't the case now, you know he's going to give it everything he has, and he's not going to get down on himself unnecessarily. A break down in the fourth, and I still thought he could do it. Thats so encouraging.
He did ever so well again at another slam, removing his final taboo, beating the Fed at a Slam and in doing so making his third consecutive final. Tremendous effort.
He'll be disappointed, but, the speech suggested he's not to downhearted. Here's hoping after a rest he'll have some more serious time devoted to working with Lendl, and he can really hit the masters tournaments running this year.
Nole indicated that it was a turning point for him when he won the 2nd game of the 2nd set from 0-40 down. If only Andy had won that game, it could have been a whole lot different.

Yes it's frustrating of course but I do hope Andy doesn't dwell on it too much....there will always be "if only's" in such big matches. I noticed from the stats that Andy had far less UEs than Nole though Nole had more winners. Interesting - I guess that says Nole "went for it" more and it paid off. Re the physical problems - we'll never know how much they affected his game. I somehow expected the Federer match to have taken it out of him both physically and emotionally and feared he might be running on empty as a result but I still see it that win as a huge positive. I'm sure Andy knew this would be tough but I truly believe it is all coming together under the guidance of Lendl who I'm sure will address all necessary issues arising from this match.
Foot blisters.....ouch!

It'll be nearly 6 weeks before Andy is due to play again - R2 at I'Wells so probably not until 9/10 March.
He plans to be in Florida most of that time working on training/tactics with Lendl and also he mentioned
possibly playing in Delray Beach 'cos it was 'up the road' from his training camp.
I hope that he and Kim can 'escape' for a few days and laze on a beach somewhere first.
Andy didn't really get much of a break from playing and training since last July. His 'off' season
consisted of a few days in the UK after the WTF and then hard training in December!
Apart from anything else that blister won't heal up properly unless he rests it so perhaps
they'll take a break at a Pacific resort 'en-route' to Florida. Although knowing Andy he might
prefer to zip back to the UK to catch up with Maggie and Rusty!!!
I think Andy will recover from this AO loss in far better shape than in previous years and
he'll have chance to get his outdoor hardcourt tennis back on track at I'Wells and Miami.
Why is no one saying Andy had less time to get over semi?
Well don't forget Nole's marathon with Andy in the semis last year and he then went on to win a near 6 hour match against Rafa - as Andy himself would say, fitness is all part of the game. Just trying to be fair.
Must admit, I was disappointed at Andy's loss but not as gutted as I have been in the past. Somehow a loss to Nole doesn't feel quite so bad and it would have been a whole lot worse for me if it'd been over 5 very close sets. Think the blisters and the hamstring just did for him. Judging by his demeanour at the end and speech I didn't feel he was surprised or overwrought by the loss and I think he'll pick himself up pdq. My only fear (and having been offline today I've no idea as yet what's been said) is that peeps would start saying he only won the US Open because of the weather. I do feel Andy is still very much a work in progress which is encouraging. So onwards and upwards - remember he's always been about 2 years behind Nole in terms of achievement, having joined the tour 2 years later than him - so any day now!! Hold onto your hats for the ride.
What an achievement, 3 Slams finals in a trot, how could anyone be disappointed, not even Novak did it in a row. With all the points he is going to amassed in the US Season he is bound to get to #2 if not #1. Federer might not win Dubai or Rotherdam. Here's hoping !!!!!
To be honest, whilst I'm sad, I feel a lot better about this result than previous Andy slam final losses. The most obvious reason for this is, of course, because it isn't immediately followed by people asking "Will he ever do it?" (win a slam), because of course he already has! :D
The other reason is because, unlike Andy's first three slam finals, today once again he played at a very, very high level - he didn't lose his serve for nearly 3 hours and up to the point when he got broken, it looked like a match that could have gone either way - quite a contrast to the rather one-sided affairs at USO '08, AO '10 & '11! ;)
Although in the post-match that I read Andy ruled out his hamstring and / or blisters being a factor in the match, to be honest I think they probably *did* make a small difference - possibly they didn't affect the outcome, but I think the match would have been tighter still without those factors. Injury is part of the sport, and I think it's with that in mind that Andy (to his credit) declined to blame the outcome on his injuries, in the same way that Novak didn't blame the weather conditions at the US Open - but ultimately it was a tight match that could have gone either way but for a couple of small things here and there. So, whilst it's not the result I wanted, I can live with it! ;)
Unfortunately on my Facebook news feed today I've had friends Andy-bashing (the most intelligent example being one of my "friends" posting up "Nice one, Djokovic :-) ") - it's very hard not to get angry. How do you guys cope with this? I was going to start a whole new thread about it but didn't know which sub-forum was the best place to do so?? :)

:)
Well, it's a tennis related issue but as much to do with how Facebook works too.
So, you could start a thread in any of:-
a) Andy off court - because it relates to him
b) Tour Tennis - because most of us support more than one player and have to deal with conflict when they're playing each other
c) Chill Out Zone - where we talk about more general things including how other media work with sport.
That help?
I am somehow not as disappointed as I have been in previous losses. Maybe it's because I know that Andy has won big matches and that GS title in the past so no monkey! Also I, like Boris Becker think that Andy can beat Novak in the future again, that he's good enough to and not far off Novak (scoreline doesn't tell how close match was). And that he just has to tweak a few things. Mentally stronger than before but perhaps a few dstractions at crucial points, making sure he ups it a bit more at those BPs and the serve
Novak upped his game today and he deserved to win but I don;t doubt that there will be many a Novandy clash in the future. Will Andy bounce back quick? I do think he will. He knows he is good enough to win a GS so it won't have affected his confidence as much as in the past and his reaction after has been positive and shows progres
To think how far Andy has come. Reaching 3 out of last 4 GS finals and winning 1 of them. We would have taken that! Before we were worried as Andy hadn't won sets. Now we know he can and even at the death we will always believe. So proud to be an Andy fan! And I will always believe
To those Andy fans on FB, reacting badly to the loss and taking it out on Andy... maybe they should take a leaf out of Judy's book and her great sportsmanlike reaction at the end of
Congrats @DjokerNole. Incredible athlete. Perfect gentleman. #ausopen
The whole Murray family are a class act alright! Excellent tweet from Judy! :)
Slightly off-topic, but something else I really like is the fact that Andy & Novak are obviously such good friends and, although when on the tennis court they are fierce rivals, they also have a great deal of mutual respect for each other. In a way when they play a big, close match like today it almost doesn't feel like either of them is the loser - the winner is the sport of tennis. :)
Take care... :)

I hope Andy gets to number 2 soon, certainly before the seedings for Wimbledon (and good result at Queens in terms of the "grass" coefficient) because while he is number 3, and if Rafa is not fully functioning, Roger can still be favourite to win a GS if Nole and Andy are drawn against each other in a SF because they could basically knock the stuffing out of each other!
I was horrified by some of the things being said on facebook. Andy fans stooping to accusing Novak of being a drug taking cheat! I could not believe it to be honest and would hate to be lumped together with so called Andy fans who take a loss so badly.
Completely agree that we should all be taking a leaf out of Judy's book, which thankfully on this forum, we seem to be
I can never understand why Fed invariably wins the sportsmanship award - if anyone should get it it should be Novak (though I believe Rafa had it one year......correct me if I'm wrong someone).
No I don't have a problem with Nole winning either - he is also a class act for sure.

Still happier than I ever have been with an Andy loss in a slam but just want to say we have to remember a lot of Andy's fan have arrived since his Olympic and US Open wins! Don't expect them to stand by him through highs and slightly lower highs! Maybe they don't have big enough :sofa:
I agree - no problem with Nole winning, he was the better player on the day. It was really close, Andy played great and as always when they play each other the difference came down to one or two crucial points - if Andy had got the break in the 2nd set I do believe he would have gone on to win. But huge positives to take out of it, his 3rd consecutive Slam final is a big achievement. Agree he did not seem too downhearted, I think he'll bounce back quickly from this and there is so much to look forward to this year, there is much more to come from Andy. Onward and upward!
I agree about this final defeat being a lot easier to take than some of Andy's other slam finals. It makes such a difference now that Andy's won a slam. He's not going to win every slam final he contests but it feels like he's going to win his fair share of them over the next few years. Beating Federer in a slam was huge for Andy's confidence going forward I feel.
Novak was the better player on the day and deserves the victory. Hopefully Andy will win the next final they contest. :)
Andy did make history by being the only player to reach the next GS final after winning his 1st GS. Some the others had wait a year before achieving this. My feeling is that he would have made it a much more competitive match and even have won if he had been 'sound'. Walking with blisters and a hamstring strain is bad enough without playing tennis. Tipsy's blisters were not a bad and he gave up. The Federer was a wonderful milestone.
