Andy's finally in action this coming Sunday!!!

He'll play Evegeny Donskoy of Russia in R2 - and hopefully NOT lose at this point in the tournament as he did last year!
:grrr:

They've never played one another so the H2H is 0-0 (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=D864&oId=MC10).
Donskoy is 22, WR83 and so far hasn't played much on the main ATP tour.

Catch the match on Sunday - no idea yet what time!

Linda

Just the sort of player who could be dangerous. He's risen steadily through the rankings in his career so far and broke into the top 100 in November just gone. If he's going to amount to anything, this will probably be his breakthrough year. Hope Andy is ready.

Andy and Jamie are on tomorrow's schedule... Third on court 7 after a ladies singles, and another men's doubles.
They play Robert Lindstedt and Nenad Zimonjic.
(Info taken from Schedule on the protennislive app.)

Even though it is always good to play better and better as a tournament goes on, I think we should get an idea of Andy's state of mind and state of play from the few first games of this first match. C'mon Andy!

So come one Andy, a nice convincing start to what could well be a great summer please.

Keeping an eye on the first match on Stadium 1.
Fish took the first set 6'3, Reynolds is up a break in the 2nd and just held for 2-0.
IF this is over in 2 sets Andy might be on court by 7.30pm! 3 sets and 8pm approx.

Not that I'm getting excited at the prospect of watching him play after 6 weeks ...

Andy feeling his way in, sorting out what Donskoy's game is all about - and muttering a lot.
;)

Just as though he's never been away really!
:p

Can only say I'm not surprised at the score - typical set up. Muzzah a bit rusty, an opponent who's already got a match under his belt and going for it in the hope of trying to catch out a top seed cold in R1.

And I've got to listen to that twerp Barry Cowan wittering on. He can't even pronounce the Russian's name right - saying Donskee instead of Donskoi.
:grrr:

david1610
10-03-2013, 20:55
Andy breaks to go 2-5 but will be serving at the "troublesome end" now.
Hope he has arrived.
Bit deflated. After all weeks of expectation, was hoping Andy was going to show us first round wobbling was a thing of the past.
Oh well.
C'mon Andy!

JAMES4578
10-03-2013, 20:57
Still a bit worrying that Andy has been pretty much out of sorts but obviously he hasn't had matches under his belt lately and still used to court and opponent. At least 1 break back, come on!

Jan62
10-03-2013, 21:01
Whatt???? I thought we had left the muttering behind. This is like the old Andy, bit tentative. What happened to Prepare, Attack, Destroy? And he did great yesterday with Jamie, so I thought that would help him come out firing today. Wouldn't be AM without the worry I suppose! 5-3 but Donskoy gets the chance again to serve for the set, so lets see what Andy can do.

10-03-2013, 21:08
Well, Andy has got out of jail but not due to his own efforts, purely due to Donskoy getting tight when serving for the set both times. I've never seen Donskoy play before but I'm quite impressed.

Hopefully Andy's now played enough games to shake off the rust.

Andy loses the first set 5-7.

The Russian has played some stunning tennis especially from someone who's so far lost this year to the likes of Haase, Dodig and Sousa! I still think it's a classic example of a guy gunning for a top player in the early rounds.

It's up to Andy now to regroup and get his act together and win this in 3 sets.
He's certainly running the Russian around a bit and should, by now, have worked out his strategy!

Vital he wins; 3 R2 losses on the run at Indian Wells isn't good for him.

I agree except would substitute Dubai with Memphis and/or Delray.

Andy - no drop shots - you can see he has done his homework and is expecting them.

I think missing Dubai was a very good idea ... if you're committed to training in Florida the trip across the Atlantic to play Dubai and go back takes out 3 weeks if you count the time to get over jetlag and play the tourney. I'd have liked to see him play at Delray Beach instead - just to get the match practice.

This sort of match happens a lot in the first rounds of Masters ... 6 seeds went out yesterday, caught cold by guys who'd played a R1 match or qualified.

Donskoy is trying to do to Andy what Rosol did to Nadal (and when was the last time Andy lost in the 2nd round of a slam ;)) with "lights out" tennis. The game he played to win the first set was near perfect, little Andy could do. Let's see how Donskoy handles the pressure in the 3rd set.

Personally, I do think it is significant that Andy has tended to lose more first round matches than Nole, Roger and Rafa. Nobody wins them all the time, but it is a significant difference between them that I am not sure is excusable by saying "he is different" and now Andy has the slam and, as he himself has been saying, is not "just" focused on the slams but the other tournaments, I was (and am) hoping that will change.
Linda's comment about 2005 is very interesting and perhaps a post-match discussion about whether we would have enjoyed it more or less if he was a "Santori" tennis magician not quite achieving the heights he has but with wonderful creativity instead of the super athlete who can go five sets (rounds?) with Nole and the rest...

As usual, David, you make some very good points. I am inclined to agree with you and Hawkeye that as well as the slams, Andy needs to perform better in the Masters if he hopes to surpass Nole, Fed and Rafa. I thought from what he said in a recent interview that that is his exactly what he intends to do this year.

Andy breaks at the start of the 3rd! Vamos!

So what? If he wants to improve his ranking, then it's the sort of thing he has to cut out.
I happen to think this is one occasion when Andy was less likely to play well in the first set though. Apart from anything else he HAD to get over the 'yips' of not making it into R3 for the last 2 years here (despite reaching the final in 2008) and I suspect a lot of the mess he made of the first set was down to nerves. Like it or not Andy sometimes lets the nerves get to him more than perhaps than the others; that's what he is. I don't happen to think he'll lose this and as a first match goes he's surely catching up on some much needed match practice!

I cannot find my post at the moment Bardot but I once did quite a careful analysis of Andy's tournament results for one year (perhaps 2011) and basically apart from two tournaments he either went out in his first match or else made SF/F or won the tournaments.
That is why the first match of a tourney makes a lot of us extra nervous and we were perhaps hoping this year would be different!!

Great shot by Andy!

That was 2011 which a very successful year, now let's concentrate on 2013 where has won Brisbane and reached a slam final and looks like he's going to win his first round match. It does sometimes read that if Andy is not winning with "golden sets" then we should panic. ;)

There was also a time when Andy was coming up where he had more points from what are now 250 and 500 tournaments than anyone else in the top ten. Then he started making Masters finals/winning them, then we have had the GS success. From what he has said this year I think he wants to put it all together and play consistently well in the Masters and GSs and the very occasional other 250 or 500 tourneys (e.g. pre AO or pre Wimbledon such as Queens).

Bardot: we ARE concentrating on 2013 but we are very mindful of the past whenever Andy goes 1/5 down in a first match of the tournament!! The point is as any History teacher will say - you can understand a lot about the present by remembering the past!

With respect, this is overaggressive. If you were a coach taking over a player, one of the first things you would do is try and get some videos of the player's previous matches if you were not already aware of the player's style. What has Ivan been doing but introducing change, which relies on knowledge of the past to in the present produce future change.

Well fought through, Andy. And he kept his composure well, I thought.

I had a really weird computer problem. I had the tennistv.com stream, and it was working fine - but late in the second set I couldn't get any other website. The error message suggested I restart my modem - but I didn't dare try it in case I lost the tennis! Maybe the modem was suffering from the same nerves that I was. . .

Some post match comments by Andy (quoted from http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2013/mar/11/andy-murray-evgeny-donskoy-indian-wells )
"I wasn't so concerned with the whole of the first set or the start of the match," he told Sky Sports.

"I went 5-1 down and after that I played pretty well. I had four or five break points at 5-5, didn't quite get them and he came out with some big shots.

"And the game where I got broken at 6-5, I maybe played one bad point. But he did come up with some big shots and big forehand winners so I was happy with the way I played after that, I created a lot of chances.

"I haven't played a lot of matches, so I didn't take the points as soon as I would have liked but I hit the ball well at the end of the match. "I hope I play better at each match. I haven't played well here the last few years and I just need to get matches under my belt."

Sounds like Sally called it right during the match!

Caro
11-03-2013, 08:37

I must say that - although the nails got a bit chewed as per usual in Andy's matches - for once I did feel fairly confident. He just couldn't have carried on playing that badly, he was obviously 'ring rusty' There was a time when in such circumstances Andy may have collapsed but these days his head is in a better place.
