View Full Version : INDIAN WELLS 2013, ROUND 3. Andy brings his A game to defeat Lu....

Andy is safely through to R3 at the Indian Wells Masters.
:phew:

His next opponent is Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei who is currently ranked #79 (CH#33 in 2010).
The 29year old dropped down the rankings in 2011 due to injury and is still struggling to find his form of 3 years ago. So far this tournament he's beaten WC Smyczek in R1 and 26th seed Klizan in R2.

Lu leads the H2H 1-0 with a memorable win over Andy in R1 at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 ... Andy admitted to being "underprepared" for that.

He surely made up for it next time and won the Gold Medal - although he didn't have to play Mr Lu!!!

Let's hope Andy's now in the groove at Indian Wells and can post another win here.
We probably don't need this chappie!

For some reason the url says it's an attachment but I cannot find where I originally attached it.
So I'll delete it 'cos this thread is starting to look like a record with the needle stuck.

It was a tough loss but looking for a positive, if Andy had been "prepared" it might have included missing the Olympic opening ceremony and even not staying in the village, experiences which only happen once (unlike beating Lu) and he speaks of with great enthusiasm and affection.

david1610

Tempting. Andy's Olympic singles record is R1 loss and gold medal. Why, it seems to provide more justfication for the "all or nothing" argument :)

Yes, Andy says his goal this year is more consistency so let's start now Andy with a really good showing in here in IW ..... by here, I dont mean that's where I am (I wish!!)

Maybe not ideal for many of us but Andy usually plays well in night matches, hopefully it's a step up tonight.

Am I right in thinking that Andy arrived very late in Beijing having won the final of the Cincy Masters the previous weekend? If so he must have had very little time to acclimatise.

Yes I think that's right - plus he was dehydrated and suffering the after-effects of a virus if I remember correctly. It's a very different Andy now - though Lu's a fighter, so Andy will have to play well tonight.

Fab it was a comfortable win, well done Andy! See that Berlocq upset Nishikori 6-2, 6-2. So whilst it may seem a good draw for the last 16th Muzzah won't be taking anything for granted.

Twitter comments on Andy and the match.

Neil Harman ‏@NeilHarmanTimes (https://twitter.com/NeilHarmanTimes) GSM Murray 6-3, 6-2. Lu did not take his first set chances and that is what did for him. Murray got better and better

Mike Dickson ‏@Mike_Dickson_DM (https://twitter.com/Mike_Dickson_DM) Lu is awkward, Murray made it look easier than it was to win 6-3 6-2. Next plays Carlos Berlocq (ARG) midnight UK time.

Jonathan Overend ‏@5livetennis (https://twitter.com/5livetennis) Decent win for Murray who sped in and out of his press conference in record time (for a win). Good work!

Mike Dickson ‏@Mike_Dickson_DM (https://twitter.com/Mike_Dickson_DM)

While we were just talking to Andy Murray there was another mini earthquake. We're virtually on the San Andreas fault here too.#cripes (https://twitter.com/search?q=%23cripes&src=hash)

And Scoobs has done a neat summation!
Chris P ‏@scoobschris (https://twitter.com/scoobschris)
I was actually awake for Andy's match, although I didn't intend to be at all. My thoughts:-

1) Andy started both sets off pretty average but ended both playing good tennis - won both sets comfortably yet struggled early

2) Lu takes the ball very early, like Davydenko, which makes the points seem fast even on a slow hardcourt.

3) Lu was very good early on at taking the ball unexpectedly down the line, caught Andy napping a number of times with this.

4) Lu was very poor defending out of his forehand wing dragged wide - Andy realised this and increasingly spun forehands crosscourt there

5) Andy's forehand is almost his best shot these days - certainly the biggest winner maker, the backhand has retreated into support role

6) Andy more relaxed this match, and played better, but still plenty of room to improve, seems motivated to do well here

7) Lu was tough to shake off early in the sets, but Andy backed his own play and in the end Lu faded badly in both sets

8) I still would rather have been asleep.

Oh, and Andy at 50% first serves, needs to be higher.
But he was going for flat serves up the T and out wide, slice serve not in evidence

Planned to try to avoid the result and watch my recording tonigh ... but heard the result on the radio so thought I might as well come on here and see how he played.

Bizarrely, I woke up at 2.30 and did contemplate getting up but thought better of it. Will be at work till late today and didn't want to be dog tired! It's wierd, whenever I plan to get up in the night for tennis, I always wake up at the right time without an alarm ......

I did exactly the same thing. Was fast asleep and glanced at the clock. 02.15 am couldn't resist the opportunity, well worth it but it may well mean that I dont make midnight tonight.

Good match though - Andy was so solid in the second set once he had subdued his cheeky and talented opponent

It's great being out here in Portugal on holiday! Recorded the match then watched it over a late brekkie. Will do the same tomorrow although Mr P is being picked up for golf at 7.45am so no lie in for me!
Yet again, I didn't feel remotely worried during this match. Andy played well enough, improved, got the win in 2 and hopefully will be better still in the next round. If he gets through that he'll have to be on top form if he faces Potty.

I watched in bed. Went up early and set alarm for 2. Woke up just before 2 am. Thought Lu really tried to show his power in the first set and it wasn't that straightforward for Andy but wasn't really worried. Glad it finished quickly but feel that Andy needs to play better from now on. Sure he will.....he's played and won two matches so he should be coming into good form now.:thumbup:
