INDIAN WELLS 2013, QUARTER-FINAL: Del Potro wins, 6'7, 6'3, 6'1

Andy against another Argentinian!!!

He'll play Juan Del Potro (who Andy mistakenly called Fran after beating him in the Final of the Canadian Masters 2009) who came through against Tommy Haas for the loss of only 3 games.

It's been a while since they've met but Andy leads their H2H (http://www.protennislive.com/lshd/main.swf?year=2013&wkno=99&eventid=&tour=&lang=en&ref=www.atpworldtour.com/) 5-1 with 2 wins in 2008 and 3 in 2009.

Fran has only beat Muzzah once, at the 2009 Madrid Masters after it was played on clay. In the interim Juan has had an injury which kept him out of the game for almost a year and it's credit to the Argentinian, and a measure of his talent, that he's regained his ranking quickly and is back to #7.

Meanwhile Andy has cemented his place in the top 4 of the world, recently holding the #3 spot and nudging at making it to #2 if he makes it to the Final here (and Federer doesn't!).

No doubt that Del Potro will want to try and redress the balance of the H2H but Andy clearly knows how to play him and will be looking for a 2nd Argentine scalp of the tournement - and a step closer to becomnig #2 in the world.

They have today off and play their Quarter Final match on Friday.
We'll keep you posted about the time.

From what I can remember, DelPo has usually struggled with Andy in the past and of course, the head to head is well in Andy's favour. I remember the Canadian masters final in 2009, when he came out guns blazing but Andy got him running and by the end of the 3rd set, he could hardly walk never mind run! Andy will hopefully try to do the same and exploit that movement. I doubt that DelPo will want to get into long rallies with Andy.

As I have mentioned a few times, the only time I ever got to see Andy play was when del Potro beat him in Spain. A lot has changed since then, but last night I watched a bit of Haas and del Potro and what impressed me was not the booming forehand - I was expecting that - but how solid his defence in long rallies has become. He is much more consistent and tomorrow I suspect the winner will be the most consistent player.
What I also remember gave Andy a lot of success in the past was putting the ball in slightly unusual parts of the court and taking a very tall person out of his comfort area. Not exactly what Andy has been working on with Ivan, but it might be useful to think about that tomorrow as well. In other words, a bit of Andy magic rather than just power might be in order!
It might end up being three hard fought sets and then the winner is a bit jaded for a probably SF against Nole. Just hope Andy starts positively.

So Barry Cowan's opinion is that DelPo starts as favourite to win this match, based on current form but says he wouldn't be surprised if Andy raised his game and came through. I completely disagree in that I would be very surprised if Andy didn't raise his game and come through. Not sure about DelPo starting as favourite either, what's he basing that on, 3 matches played this week? What does everyone else think of that comment?

Yes I do and I think it was testament to the fact that Andy's game gets right under his skin.

I agree that DelPo will be tough to beat tonight but I cannot agree that he's favourite for this match cos as you say, Andy has lost just one match this year to the world no 1. DelPo might be playing well this week but he sure as heck wasn't in Aus.

With that no 2 ranking a possibility this weekend, I fully expect Andy to come out and bring his A game.

Andy will need his A game IMHO. Both he and Delpo are different players since their last meeting.
