At least Andy won't play Rafa in the semis.

He could still draw Rafa in the semis if Rafa gets through his QF match - although the entry list has Rafa at 4, he'll be drawn as the number 5 seed. Andy could even draw him in the QFs (hope that doesn't happen!) The only guarantee Andy has is that he won't face Ferrer until the final, but he'll be seeded to face Djokovic or Federer in the SFs. I'd be interested in seeing how he does against Federer as they've never played on clay before.

I hope he gets a good draw in the first few rounds, and avoids Almagro and Wawrinka in R3.

The draw is today at 18.30 local time (17.30 UK), according to the tournament site (http://www.madrid-open.com/en/noticias-tenis/ceremonias-de-sorteo-de-los-cuadros-finales/):

Delpo's withdrawn from Madrid. He's only just returned to practice after recovering from the virus that kept him out of the Portugal Open so it's not surprising that he's withdrawn. Shame though.

Even without playing, he could move up to number 6 in the world after Madrid - Berdych's defending finalist points so will need to reach the SF to stay ahead.

Bellucci could be a tough second round if that matchup happens - Andy lost to him in R3 of Madrid in 2011, even though he was playing well on clay at the time. Bellucci also easily beat Ferrer in R2 of Monte Carlo last year, so he can have great form on clay. He's inconsistent though, so could well lose to Mayer in the first round.

Berdych? Wawrinka/Djokovic ? no push-over mate

Linda
03-05-2013, 20:25
He can't get Wawrinka/Djoko until the semi, and that is always going to be against a top player. Berdych for the quarters has to be better than Rafa. I think Nole has the worst draw, with probably Dimitrov in R2, Wawrinka in R3, Tsonga or Raonic in QF.

The draw looks as favourable as we might have wished for. Main thing is to see Andy in action again. I feel like we've hardly had a chance to see him since the beginning of the year - too many weeks without him so far, but hopefully we now get a nice long run of tournaments with him getting to at least SFs :cauldron: Cannot wait to see Andy in action next week. Everything crossed......

Meanwhile Djoko v Dimitrov has started - I see that Nole's wearing his pyjamas again.

Sallydaisy
07-05-2013, 19:08
Dimi is giving Djoko a run for his money; they're into a tie-breaker in the first set.
Nole 2-1 with a break after a fantastic rally from them both.

JAMES4578
07-05-2013, 19:13
Welll Dimi testiing Nole but as in Indian Wells couldn't serve the opening set out and looks like he'll go down in 2, long rally but 6-4 Djokovic.

Sallydaisy
07-05-2013, 19:16
6-6 and Nole failed to take 2 set points!!!
And now Dimi has sent a hammer blow down the line to get a set point of his own!
He really does play like Federer at times ... hence the baby Fed moniker.

And Dimitrov takes the first set 7'6 with one heck of a fight at the end.

JAMES4578
07-05-2013, 19:23
How wrong was I, perhaps Nole tightened up a bit but Dima went for it and has some amazing shots. Of course Nole can respond but certainly being asked a few awkward questions.

07-05-2013, 20:33

Tell ya, if Nole thought Dimi was going to fade away in the 3rd set he was well wrong - and so were the commentators! The Bulgarian is back with a vengeance even though he's still got cramp issues.

And, he's just pegged Nole back from a 40-0 lead to deuce ...

Well done him, he's stilll imping around the court and saluting the crowd as well he might 'cos they really got behind him.

Fabulous win for Grigor, what a result! I know Novak is probably still nursing an ankle injury, but as we say about Andy - a win is a win. And what a win this was. I have been a fan of Grigor since Queens a couple of years back ?2011. I can see why they call him Baby Fed, but would rather not have another Fed around! Love his play, and he has the most beautiful eyes....... :shamed: But hope he doesn't improve too quickly or come up against Andy too often :)

patmoren
08-05-2013, 08:37
I thought the crowd was very bad. Nole has been having trouble with his ankle since DC and struggled to play each match. It must be awful to have that reaction everytime to come up to play. Dimitrov's problems were due to lack of preparation but that didn't get any bad reaction. Appallling treatment at a sporting venue.

Linda
08-05-2013, 08:46
But when the crowd whistled at him that's 'cos he swore at them - it's not the first time he's done that to a crowd, either - it's happened a couple of times in USA.

Anyone know the email address for Sky Tennis? Barry Cowan has just been waxing lyrical about Andy only having 400 tour wins against Novak's 495 when there is only being a week between them. What he obviously fails to realise is that Novak joined the tour in 2003 while Andy joined in 2005. I feel motivated to put him right!

Looks like Fed wasn't on top form but you still have to earn a win and Kei hung tough, well done! Of course delighted Andy is back at no2 but would be happier still if he has a few more wins here! some upsets this week but Ferrer avoids another one, coming back from 4-2 down in the 3rd to get the better of Haas, winning 4 consecutive games.

I agree completely, whilst Stan has played very well and is capable to play well in the final, Rafa's 8 consecutive Monte-Carlo titles and record of being beaten beaten only once at the French doesn't show for nothing! Although I'd love to see Stan win his first masters 1000s, Rafa is the man here - not stan sadly!
