Do we have a draw yet ?

Madeline

The first post says 10am today UK time.

Actually, if it is noon Rome time, isn't that 11am here?

Linda
11-05-2013, 08:47
Don't think so - but there are a lot of withdrawals, particularly in the qualies & alternates: http://www.tennisteen.it/entry-list/16392-atp-entry-list-13-19-maggio-2013.html

What a boon it is having the draw streamed! ;) Utter confusion. I think Andy is in Federer's half and Ferrer has Nadal in his quarter and possibly Almagro is in Andys but don't quote me as I can read his handwriting.

Alis
11-05-2013, 10:42
That's what I thought too Bardot but it's quite difficult to see what is actually going on. I wish they would give a close up of the board rather than focussing on the people milling around the table.

Bardot
11-05-2013, 10:46
I'm reading elsewhere that DelPo is in Andy's quarter. Much hilarity when JJ seemed to draw Seppi to play Fognini in the first round who are both there.

Alis
11-05-2013, 10:51
I think I picked up that Djokovic, Nadal, Ferrer and Berdych are on the opposite side of the draw to Andy but I wouldn't swear to that!

Bardot
11-05-2013, 10:55
I would agree with that Alis. Just speculation but when Dimitrov's name was called, he seemed to write it in what would be Andy's section.

Linda
11-05-2013, 11:10
Apparently Andy has Nishikori in R3. That's about all I've managed to glean about his draw so far.

Linda
11-05-2013, 11:43
Laura has drawn Venus in R1 and Serena in R2

Quick off the draw ;) It is a nonsense that for a draw streamed live, it's taken almost 2 hours to get the actual details. Italian efficiency.

On the dreaded devils dirt it's always difficult to gauge a draw but this looks reasonable. Even with Nishikori's great win against Federer clay is not his best surface and he'll do well to make the third round. Djokovic has the nightmare draw with Federer next.

Alis
11-05-2013, 12:02
NIshikori in round 3 could be difficult but it could be a lot worse. Given Delpotro's lack of match practice, Amalgro could well make the quarters. Not an easy quarter for Djoko.

JAMES4578
11-05-2013, 15:03
Kei could be tricky and either Almagro or Del Potro would be tough in the quarters but suppose could've been worse. Just hope Andy can improve his level again to give him confidence going into the French. That's a bit of a shocking draw for Laura, though Venus can be vulnerable at times nowadays.

Could be worse by far - up to Andy to make the most of it. Let's hope he can up his game yet again for Rome and then further still for RG. Just a little concerned that the clay seems to have triggered the back problem again from what he was saying in his post Berdy interview.

Work as usual all week so won't be able to see much of Rome live.

Living in a rented house atm while ours is renovated .... so have no broadband which is why I can't come on here much. Usually manage (as now) to get a look during lunch break at work. Finally got a dongle yesterday but only for the computer so I can't use my i-pad during matches. Phone is old and v slow. Can't wait to be back home .... and roll on November for an upgrade on my phone!

Anyone watching Djoko v Montanes? First two games were a real battle; has the makings of a great match.

Perhaps I will switch back to Stan v Berloq

Federer was on when I arrived home, very straightforward v Starace and looked comfortable for Nole too. A bit surprised and disappointed Haas went out, thought Dimitov would struggle to have another great week and really expected Gasquet to go through.

16-05-2013, 14:08
The umpires always seem to be able to locate the mark so very quickly. Doesn't seem to add up. No need to for Troicki to react in the manner he did though. He is a professional athlete earning a lot of money, he's not playing on the juniors tour.

Meanwhile Paire has defeated in Del Potro in straight sets. Fantastic win for the Frenchmen who has really impressed me of late. This result doesn't surprise me.

Gulbis is up 3-0 against Nadal early on!

Edit 5-0 up! This is stunning stuff from the Latvian. Think Rosol Wimbledon.

Does he have to do it against Rafa?? It's so annoying when these palyers beat a top guy then wilt in the next round .... which Gulbis is likely to do and has done before

Indeed, whether or not that is the case one has to admire that performance in that first set. Long way to go I'd still fancy Rafa to turn this around. Though If Gulbis sustains this tennis he will take some beating!

Being selfish though, while Andy's injured we don't want the other 3 pulling too far ahead in ranking points. So if someone can eliminate Rafa, Nole and Fed before the later stages I'd be a happy bunny ;)

Having watched some clay court tennis at Estoril a couple of days ago I would just alter your remark to "locate A mark". I saw at least a couple of cases where umpires got the WRONG mark! Now these were not the top umpires we tend to get in the more important tournaments, but IMHO there is still a place for Hawkeye on a clay court - even when marks are made as you have to be sure it is the right mark.

Alis
16-05-2013, 18:23
The umpire just got the wrong mark - guided by Janowicz - in the Gasquet/Janowicz match - saving Janovicz from a break of serve. Close to cheating on the Pole's part I would say - about time we had Hawkeye on the clay.

Yes, that's what I meant.

@Alis Janowicz knew exactly what he was doing there. Has cost Gasquet the match, Gasquet would have been a set and a break up. Now he is serving to stay in the match.

Really frustrating for Gasquet, though I suppose you have to deal with setbacks in a match. Janowicz takes it 6-4 in the 3rd and can't say I've warmed to him.

Hope the Fed gives Janowicz a master class today. I felt sorry for Richou today and Jo yesterday. Janowicz's demeanour on court today was that of a junior who has just moved up to the senior ranks. He is 22 years old not 18.

If we had Hawkeye on clay, would that be instead of or as well as asking the umpire to look at the mark? Yesterday Gulbis had the umpire off his chair every other point. Sometimes I wondered whether it was just time wasting. Players are only allowed three Hawkeye challenges per set, so on clay should there be a limit to how many times they can call the umpire off his chair?

JAMES4578

Have flexi day and was watching Paire and Granollers ,hoping for a good contest but something of anticlimax as Paire had a breadstick and a bagel! Benoit certainly was on form but such a disappointing display from Marcel!

Linda
17-05-2013, 11:32
Didn't see it but am shocked at the score, although I thought Paire would win. Rafa says he is very difficult to play against as he doesn't give you any rhythm, so I can understand Marcel finding it difficult.

Hmmm, and no I haven't warmed to that Jerzy fella either. It's kind of ok for the workd no 1 to rip his shirt off (even then I can't say I'm keen), but certainly not some upstart who thinks he's better than he actually is!! Too big for his boots. I too hope Fed thrashes him!

Having watched the match, I think that was a strategic loss on Novak's part. There was none of his usual fight in the third set. My guess is that he didn't want to face the possibility of losing to Nadal so close to the French and it will also give him more time to prepare. Let's face it, he doesn't need the points and his eyes are definitely on the main prize.

well, credit to fedX, toughed that one out and jerzy blinked - he had set point at 40-30 and chose to play a drop shot, which didn't drop over the net! how he must have regretted that! maze of dfs and wild swings after that, did well to hang on for a tb, but fedX too strong from the off in that. fedX put in really good serves when it mattered, no lack of composure or outward confidence, but I still don't warm to him

This women's final is a snoozefest so far. All Serena and nothing else. Disappointing.

Serena is just too powerful , look at those biceps shes got , no other woman is gonna be able to compete with that !!
Her power is just too much for them

RoastLamb

Yes, but it's too bad she doesn't have any real competitors. Shazza and Aza look incompetent next to her and they are #2 and #3!!!

At least Azarenka has beaten Serena this year but no chance this time as Serena takes it 6-1,6-3 though Vika has only ever won 1 clay title.Serena used to be more vulnerable on clay but not much sign the last few events, though last time she took the French was in 2002.

 Am sensing the crowd is 70% pro-Fed.

Not making much diference though,Rafa already a double break up at 4-1.

Not getting too excited coz this has happened before. Rafa wins first set easily then Fed comes roaring back to win.

RoastLamb

Boy the crowd hardly cheer when Rafa wins a point or game but when he loses they cheer and cheer. Sickening.

I'm not getting too excited either. RF does this now gives away the first set only to come back at his opponent for the win. Just hope Rafa can find a way past for a win.

The crowd cheering every point won by RF can't help Rafa.

RoastLamb

The crowd are even booing now but i think that's coz Fed is giving such a poor show (so far).

A set and 3-1 to Rafa, can't see Fed coming back from this and it could have been another break. Whilst in the one sense it's good to see Fed humbled I'd rather see a more competitive final. Rafa certainly on song but Roger has given so much away.

RoastLamb

I don't know if it's so much Fed giving it away rather than having it taken from him.

5-2 - hope this isn't the Fed on the comeback trail. :grrr:

Fed left it a bit late,Rafa supreme in taking it 6-1, 6-3 but not the most exciting final. Fed though not looking the same force on clay nowadays.

WOW!!!!!!! Why oh why did I change my FTM from a 2 set win for Rafa to 3 sets? I thought about how he'd lost sets to lesser players recently and decided maybe Fed would get one from him...........how wrong was I. Well done Rafa. But for trying to accumulate a few points to keep his ranking up as much as poss, I'd say Andy may as well decide to skip RG now.

Only got around to watching the final yesterday evening as always so busy at weekends these days with house stuff!

Very impressive from Rafa I must say - he definately looks back to his best. Fed definately wasn't at his best but he wasn't allowed to be. Looks like he has run out of ideas big time against Rafa on clay.
