Tsonga playing amazingly well making fed look mediocre! 75 first set and now almost 52 in 2nd to Jo.

Wow, it's just hit me that either Tsonga or Ferrer will be in the final!!! Second grand slam final if Tsonga but a first for Ferrer, wouldn't that be sweet for him!

So happy for Tsonga!
Fantastic performance from Jo - so good to see! So in the last three Grand Slams Fed has been beaten by Berdy, Andy and Jo - not Mr Invincible any longer!
Couldn't watch any tennis today (or yesterday, either ) as I was at work but very happy to see the results! :cheer:

My problem is I would be happy to see either David or Jo.Wilf in the final...like them both and they both deserve it. We'Ve had some great matches this year, real nail biters. Missed Andy badly though
It will be great to have either Jo-W or Daveed in the final - of course Daveed has never made a slam final before so I guess I have a slight preference for him to make it. I like both players, though, and am very happy that it will be one of them rather than Federer.
Awesome result today! Fantastic, so very happy for Jo!! Tsonga vs Ferrer... now that should be an awesome match, no idea which way that one will go, although I might favour Ferrer slightly for that one.
Nonetheless, would love to see a Frenchman in the final against Rafa or Nole! :pierre:
I too like and respect both players, that's a difficult one but whoever wins will be good for the game, I'm leaning slightly towards Ferrer because the poor guy has never made it to a Slam Finals. I'm happy that Federer lost as the commentators were driving me crazy calling him a "God" I found it offensive, at least, now we won't hear his name, but here's HOPING. Some of them always bring him in, in all matches they just can't help it. Having Andy's withdrawl big time, can't wait for next Tuesday, he has a bye in the 1st round. Come on Andy!!!!!

Wow! Spent the afternoon in hospital with my daughter getting a splint for her finger so had to watch the match when I got home. Could not believe Tsonga not only beat him but beat him in straights. Then also Tommy took only 4 games from Ferru. Amazing results!!! So glad Fed is oot!!! I don't mind who's in the final altho' it would be special to see a Frenchman there. But then again, Ferru really deserves to be in this slam's final too.

I was expecting a tough battle between Tsonga and Fed, didn't think Jo could win in straight sets! Just a superb performance from him and Roger was never really in the hunt after he lost the early service break. Think I would make Ferrer the slight favourite for the semi and whilst David would certainly be a worthy Slam finalist will be rooting for Jo and hope he can be involved in a title match again.

That was a bit of a French one-two, having been softened up by Gilles the other day.
Yes very pleased for whoever the finalist is.
If Federer goes out rather meekly at Wimbledon and the US Open I suspect his retirement may come sooner rather than later. I think he is happy to hang around not being number 1 if he thinks he can still win a grand slam or two, but once that starts to fade, I do not think his ego will allow him to remain playing as one of the pack.

David, as long as he reaches the quarters I think he will hang in there. If he starts going out in the first - third rounds then he might have a wee think.

This tournament has stopped a run of 10 grand slam finals with only members of the 'big 4'. Last player outside the big 4 to make a major final was Berdy at Wimbledon 2010. Of course, not all members of the big 4 were present at RG ;)
It's a wonderful opportunity for Jo and Daveed. It would be amazing for Jo to make the final of his home grand slam but at the same time, it would be wonderful for Daveed to achieve the experience also. I cannot choose between them, so may the best man (on the day) win!

I was so pleased Tsonga won for more than one reason. So looking forward to going to the semis on Friday now. Just hope that it will be Rafa and Novak in the other semi. The only thing missing is Andy!
It is Jo all the way for me.
Can't see the appeal of Ferrer at all. Nice guy but his game is tennis' equivalent of beige. A good quality beige, granted - but really quite dull, compared with JWT.
Also, I don't think he can compete with either Nadal or Djokovic over 5 sets - whereas JWT can. Just look at his performance against Djokovic at RG last year.
Apparently Ferrer also shares Henman's record of number of 6 slam semi finals without reaching a final.
I agree, Super8 - fond of Daveed as I am, if/when Rafa makes it to the final, I can't see it being much of a match with Daveed. Tsonga would be a fresh and more exciting prospect.
I love Daveed to pieces but also can't see him beating Nole or Rafa especially as it would be his first GS final. Jo is looking smoking hot and although not favourite (obviously) to beat either of them in the final either, I think he has more chance because of the way he plays.
The way Jo plays and his personality makes him one of my favourite palyers so on that basis ALLEZ JO!!

Beige! I must admit altho' I respect Ferru enormously I'd agree that his game isn't exciting. Certainly not as interesting as Tsonga's.

What frustrates me about Daveed, much as I love him, is that he doesn't seem to have learned anything from all his meetings with Rafa, nor does he seem prepared to change his game to up the anti. It's just, for the most part, brilliant defence, followed by more brilliant defence, save against those where defence is no answer.
RoastLamb
05-06-2013, 14:09
But I do think that Ferru is getting closer to Rafa. The last few encounters have been three-setters whereas before Rafa always beat him in straights. So I do think his level is higher, just not high enough.

Well the quarters were kinda dull today. Too bad Haas couldn't take Djoko down. But conditions were perfect for Rafa which I'm hoping they'll be for Friday too. I heard it's going to be very warm on Friday which could help him.
Happy that Daniel Nestor is in the mixed dubs final tomorrow. Now I just have to get up at 6 a.m. to watch it.

Certainly expected Rafa to win in straights particularly since Stan has such a tough battle against Gasquet but hoped Wawrinka would make a bit more of an impression. A bit of a disappointment for a quarter, even if Nadal on form. At least Haas had a few close sets with Nole but anyway think we get the semi most wanted to see when the draw came out!

Tbh, even tho' I really, really would like Rafa to win, I'd be perfectly OK with Djokovic winning because he deserves to get his career slam and it'd be a nice tribute to his first coach who died this week. And I'd be OK with either Tsonga or Ferru winning. ABF really.

Wow what a match its turning out to be, looked like nadal was going to serve it out in the 4th and then Nole claims it in the tiebreak!
All to play for in the 5th now. Come on Nole!
NB Good to see Nadal getting time violations for his ridiculously long serving even got a point penalty! Should teach him to hurry up for grass court season hopefully!

Amazing fightback from Nole when he seems down and out, even if Rafa possibly tightened up a bit. He certainly seems to have the energy now and up 2-0 in decider. Though of course Nadal will likely fight tooth and nail, let's hope we see some great tennis in the final set. Glad I had today off or wouldn't have seen much of this live.

I took the day off work so I could watch the semis - very glad I did! What a match this
Really thought Nole was down and out several times, but he keeps fighting his way back into the match, and is now a break up in the deciding set - fantastic tennis!
I've been waiting for weeks to get some good weather to lie in the sun - and of course its sunny at the same time as the semis. But I'm too gripped watching this to go outside.

Well only took day off to watch this really and certainly some drama! Pleasant day outside though I think!Pity Nole touched net as could have been crucially point but Nadal has certainly stepped it up. Certainly compelling viewing now.Oh well Nadal takes it 9-7 and all credit to him for coming through and has superb record here. However, really feel for Nole and pity he lost focus in end.
OMGosh , just got back to see that it turned out to be an awesome match , Nole must have overcome whatever was bothering him in that 1st set
Dont think it will matter who wins the Tsonga/Ferrer one with Rafa in the final
JAMES4578
07-06-2013, 16:13

JAMES4578

Oh I don't know about that, Ferrer is playing brilliantly and he's the only player to not drop a set the whole tournament. At least we had an amazingly competitive semi-final with Rafa and Djokovic. Let's face it, that should have been the final anyway.
I'm so pleased that Ferrer is into the final! :) He deserves it so much after how much he's improved over the past few seasons. I didn't think Tsonga would be able to beat him, not on clay - he just doesn't move well enough to be able to stay in the baseline rallies. I hope the French press aren't too hard on him after yesterday's match though - it can't have been easy playing while under so much pressure to get into his home grandslam final. The press hyped him up a lot before the match, so I hope they're kinder than the British press and don't turn on him now.
I'm probably in a minority but I enjoy Nadal/Ferrer matches. They always have nice rallies and they play proper clay court tennis which is good to watch. Ferrer's unlikely to win, true, but then that would be true of every other player apart from Djokovic anyway. And he's the player that threatened Rafa the most over the course of Madrid and Rome, taking sets in both tournaments.

Katie, I agree - Rafa and Ferru play wonderful clay court matches and I'm sure that I'll really enjoy the final. It's lovely that Ferru has made a slam final at last. Ferrer to his credit fought in the 3rd but too many errors at crucial times and result never in doubt. Always felt this would be straight sets and whilst not the best final, obviously we got some drama in the semi. Some achievement to win 8 French titles, well done Rafa! obviously he could built on it, at the moment only Djokovic seems a real challenger on clay which is a bit disappointing. Well done to Rafa - his dominance on clay is outstanding. :) I'm glad he's not as dominant on the other surfaces though, so that other players can get a look in! It's good to see him back playing so well after all the time he was away from the tour - the victory must be extra-special to him this year.
David fought very hard all match - but Rafa was just too good, often forcing him into going for too much and then missing. A bit like David does to the players ranked below him really. But still, he played a fantastic tournament and it was great to see him reach a GS final after all these years. :)
The flare incident was shocking - I'm so pleased that no-one was hurt. But really incidents like that should never be allowed to happen in the first place.
