View Full Version : MIAMI MASTERS 2013, ROUND 2: Andy A-Tomic , beats Bernie 6'3, 6'1

Bernard Tomic has just beaten Marc Gicquel (just being the operative word - 7'5, 7'6 over a 35yr old!!!) and his reward is a match against World #3 Andy Murray in R2.
They've only met once before (I can't access the H2H page on the ATP website to do a link) - in the Semi-Final in Brisbane 2012 and the winner was Andy Murray by 6'3, 6'2.
Tomic was WR42 at the time and he's still ranked in the mid-40's a year later; he's only 20 so has plenty of time to push on up the ranks.
At the time of their Brisbane encounter there were many talking about his talent and the possibility of him giving Andy a troublesome match.
That proved not to be the case so let's hope it's the same this time around.
The match will be played on Saturday 23rd March, 3rd on Stadium so 19.00 approx UK time.

Go Andy!
Oh goody, hoping to be able to watch this live for a change

Tomic is difficult to play because he is so erratic. If Andy maintains his focus shouldn't have a problem

I hope it is not on too late.
Hurrah. half a chance might get to see this match live - not too big a time difference even if its on relatively late in Miami. Go Andy!!!

I see that Andy's 3rd on main court after a ladies & men's match tomorrow.
Depending if they get all their matches played today because of rain delay, I would say Andy would play roughly 6.30 - 7pm(UK)
The Very Best of Luck Andy!!!:thumbup:

Reckon it will be around 7.30 our time. Was expecting visitors this weekend (non-tennis fans!) so thought I would miss it but I have a clean house and food prepared so will be free to watch - hooray !
Sky did say they would catch Andy's first match so assuming that it will be on

Weather site says 20% chance of rain today (sunny/cloudy) in Miami and 10% chance at night. Scattered clouds. 25 ºC max 29 ºC Night 22 ºC. Tomorrow 22-31 ºC with chance of thundertorms and 30% chance of rain.
My plans for this evening have been ruined by the weather, so getting to see Andy is my consolation!
What a pity he's not on either early or late on this occasion, as I'm going to a quiz night tonight which starts at 6.30  Oh well, good luck Andy and hope I will come home to good news.

Aftwards, Tomic is partnering Hewitt in the doubles. That must be an interesting combination, especially if you are an Aussie!
The very best of luck, Andy:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::)

Hope to see a little of this although I'm out tonight at our teens club. Starts at 8pm and the weather has settled enough to go so I suppose I must.....

Well the match before, Tsonga and Troicki, is just about to start so Andy's starting time may well depend on Tsonga's form today!
Edit: As Jo drops his opening service game!

Well if he'd been on earlier you'd probably have Andrew Castle commentating.
I'm just hoping that as Andrew Castle is commentating this afternoon he won't be this evening.

Tsonga restoring ranking order, breaking back and now leading 4-3 in the first.
But having to save a set point at 4-5 after being broken again before being a bit lucky with calls to get back to 5-5.

Pity the timing doesn't suit everyone but if Andy plays well sure you'll all be happy. Didn't have anything else planned, looking forward to the match!

Tsonga leading 5-1 in TB, 5-2 then two successive doubles! Finally Tsonga gets in 8-6.
david1610
23-03-2013, 18:25
Tsonga finally breaking and holding to 2-0, now 2-1.
Looks a bit sticky out there folks and both players showing the effects of the combination of heat and humidity after a long rally.
Troicki is on a losing streak of 31 straight losses against the top ten! Overall 3/49.
3-1. Some might say just a question of concentration for Jo now, but I would not risk waiting for one more hour for Andy.....
Well done Jo! 7-6 6-3
Time for Andy!

Well Andy's first service game would not win any awards, but was solid enough and he seemed to be making sure he was getting a lot of first serves in. 1-1
C'mon Andy!

Two BPs against Andy. First set first matchitis?

I've never really endeared to Tomic as a player. I remember when he snubbed Hewitt's offer as a training partner as thought Hewitt wasn't good enough to train with him. Appears he suffers from megalomania. Cmon Andy!

Phew! I just got home in time to see Andy really struggling to hold serve there!
david1610
23-03-2013, 19:24
Phew! Andy holds 2-2. Might be time for a break. Dave... don't know if you saw my comment earlier but Tomic is playing doubles with Hewitt later.
0-30 Tomic a bit too many UEs. Chances! C'mon Andy!
And Andy breaks! (Images of Judy smiling away with Dareen Cahill).

:grrr: had to watch the first part of the match with the sound down thanks to Mum phoning while the players were warming up! Oh well....!

Commies were saying in previous match that there was a big advantage playing from one end because of the wind. Hopefully the wind has died down a bit now.

A bit of nervy start but thankfully Andy was able to save the bps and go up a gear. Now 4-2 up,Tomic may have missed his chance to put Murray under pressure.

Andy looking comfortable right now and Tomic seems to have few answers to counteract it. More of the same Muzzah!
Awww. Nick Bollitieri commentating on R5Live SX - just said "Judy Murray to me is a princess" :) She'll be pleased with that one!

23-03-2013, 19:54
Andy gets the break thanks to two DFs by Tomic. Over 30 UEs by him already. You won't beat the number 2 seed that way even if it is Andy's first match of the tournament!
3-1 in the 2nd. Cruising ? :cauldron:
Back home, just tuned in and looking very good indeed

Tomic seems to have lost the plot. Dreary performance even though he is playing the No 3 soon to be No 2.
What's up with Tomic? Nice and easy for Andy, which we like, but Tomic's game has deserted him and I don't really like to see that from anyone. But a win's a win :)

Well apart from making Andy work very hard to hold serve at 2-2, this has been a non-performance by Tomic.

Was Andy THAT good throughout or Bernie a load of .....?
I'll have a quick look back through the thread.
The friends were supposed to be coming by tomorrow afternoon but are heading off early for Easter break and wanted to borrow some stuff to take so I couldn't bundle them out any sooner.
Ho hum, blooming starving I am too.
Easy peasy for Andy :cheer::cheer: but not good to see Tomic the tank engine on show again. He made no effort on the last 2 points. :grrr:

If Tomic wasn't carrying an injury then the commitment he showed is inexcusable. In a world where job security is tough and job cuts are ruthless people are fired every-time they fart and cough. We are accountable for our actions, Tomic as someone who gets paid in abundance should at least play as if he actually wants to be there.
just got home , missed the whole thing :grrr:
Sounds like he played really well .

Tomic played well for the first 4 games and then dropped off, so it was more like Tomic playing badly. Having said that the conditions are difficult and Andy is used to playing in those conditions.
Missed it all because our power has been off for 24 hours. So glad it's back on - it was getting very cold - and soooooooo glad to see that Andy won. Well done our man!!!!
Apparently Andy wrote on the camera "I have more hair than you" but in Spanish......

Well done Andy. Topic really beat himself, Andy just had to keep the ball in court and Tomic did it for him. He started a bit nervously as normal (do wish he could correct that) but once he got over a tough fourth game he coasted through. Conditions were tough though. Hot humid and windy

Once Andy got the first break he never looked back and didn't give Tomic another chance, well done! However, some appalling errors from Bernie and he seemed to more or less give up well before the end. Talk of him being the next big thing looking pretty shaky right now.
Bolelli just retired so it will be Dimitrov in the next round.

i agree James , sometimes he plays great , and then theres the crap & attitude side.
Solid win from Andy. Apparently Tomic woke up with a cold and tried to play through it

Far from scintillating but the W was the main thing plus conservation of energy.
