What a daft idea, tennis is a sport not a TV entertainment.

Thank goodness they didn't get their hands on tennis. I've always had my doubts about Becker's sanity and as for Tiriac, well last year's blue clay says it all!

interesting post. 'just the money' demanded by the ITF, were they demanding an exorbitant amount rather than a straight refusal?
cricket comes in several formats - Test match series, one day 50over games, and 20/20 - twenty overs, with power plays at set intervals.
and 20/20 has rejuvenated the game - its fast, thrilling, and brought in a new audience.
wonder if tennis could indeed incorporate another tier? there are Slams, 5 set series, Masters, 500 and 250 tournaments, all 3 series, but nothing equivalent to 20/20, with the potential to draw in a new audience, and new players?

What a daft idea, tennis is a sport not a TV entertainment.

I posted it, as my initial reaction was that they were thinking of changing the format of tennis & that it would include the major tournaments. I wouldn't want that. To say it's not TV entertainment is a bit naive though. The big tournaments wouldn't be as 'big' without the TV coverage & the revenue that brings.
I don't know whether there's any other formats run in the world.....in the '70's (& 80's?) there was 'Team Tennis' which was probably a different format......?

But if Ecclestone was involved he'd be looking at Top $$$ players, venues, etc.

Someone was telling me recently that Tiriac has his own bank in Romania.

If this had been posted on Monday would have thought it was an April Fool's jest. Though come to think of it Tiriac and Becker are "foolish" sometimes. TV coverage is important as it enables fans to watch tournaments from around the world but what they were suggesting was absolutely ridiculous.
