Great win for Andy, shows what a true champion he really is.

To win like that after poor serving and the pain he was in, saving a match point and NEVER, EVER, giving in.
Great job Andy, you deserve it!

Once the dust has settled, I think Andy can reflect that he won that match due to his physical fitness against duracell Dave, which is some feat.
I thought Andy was very honest as always in his interview - both could have won - and gracious to Daveed.

Absolutely nerve-wracking tennis match.

Real character shown by Andy. This is a match he would have lost a year or two ago.

Andy was clearly nervous in the first set and this was by no means his best tennis performance, but he never gave up.

Surviving a championship point, and then winning the tie-breaker 7-1 when he seemed exhausted, demonstrated sheer guts and determination.

Ferrer seems such a nice bloke, and played his part in a very exciting match. He must be gutted, but he
should take comfort from coming so close against the new world number 2!

Well done, Andy!

I hope by now you realise that you are one of the best tennis players of all time, and that you
will have the confidence to go on and win the multiple grand slam titles that your exceptional talent deserves.

Well I think it was an enjoyable match in a different way really, yes Andy wasn't playing his best tennis - his serving was very poor. But it was exciting in the fact that it had us hiding behind our sofas!! The satisfaction of having him win that tiebreak pretty comprehensively after saving a match point is just IMMENSE, if I feel that he must really be on a buzz right now! The fact that it was for #2 as well makes it even sweeter. We all were talking about Andy's chances to getting to #1 after winning the USO, and it was this period (Indian Wells - Roland Garros) where he could gain all the points to do that, yes Indian Wells wasn't perfect but he was unlucky to have Potty in his quarter, but this win really helps him get to #1. The ranking point help yes, but the seedings can really benefit him, he may be lucky and have Novak/Roger/Rafa in the other half of the clay events... now that will really help him get into the later stages of the clay events!

Linda
31-03-2013, 18:51
Terrible match from both players, really. So many UEs. Just didn't have the quality of the two semifinal matches. But both players seemed to be struggling physically (and they are supposed to be the two fittest players on tour!) Ferru was getting leg massages at change of ends, and Andy was walking as though he had groin strain or possibly bad back. Someone tweeted that Andy had been advised to retire after the first set of the Gasquet match due to bad back - does anyone know anything about that?

SamP
31-03-2013, 18:53
YES!!!!!

That was utterly horrible, horrendous, exhausting, awful....but YES!!!

The start was woeful. I think he's had a niggly back all week, as this week has been the first time in a while he's been tugging at it. So that perhaps hindered him, as did the wind, but his timing and footwork, particularly on the backhand was so off.

It looked like he'd steadied the ship in the second and started moving at around 85% but again he still made things so difficult. I want someone to work out the stat on how many times Andy got to 40 in a game and then either slumped to deuce or lost it, it was staggering, absolutely staggering, to the point where it felt inevitable.

I thought he was absolutely finished after he failed to serve it out at 5-4 in the third, but he somehow took it to the tie break after David got the challenge wrong, and from there, there was only one man in it. Well done Andy Murray, that was grit of the finest draw. Now rest that back and relax!

P.S. If Andy had lost there to a guy that had hit over three times as many unforced errors to winners, I'd be beside myself.

WELL DONE ANDY. Not the prettiest win, but the record books never show the 'nearlys, ifs and buts'. They just show the results ...Andy isMiami champion and world 2.

What mental strength he has gained in the last 12 months. Somehow we cannow always believe that he can hold on, turn things around, and win through.

Has Andy ever won before after saving a championship, or even a match point against him ? Anyone know ????

Well Roddick and Karlovic have shown their view on the conditions and given us a valid reason for why the play was what is was. So, don't think we can blame the players that much really, yes we can blame Andy's serve and the stupid DF's, but he still managed to find a way. Both players had the same conditions, yet one player could only win.

A little aside at Bouncy's expense. He tweeted 5 minutes ago that he'd just watched Andy's match but whilst the match was in progress he was tweeting about the "bedroom tax" and his daughter's parking. Agony to watch and not very "good" tennis but Andy is my iron man these days and he proved it again in this match. Since he stopped all th chuntering and talking himself down he is using his enrgy much more positively.
Ferrer is such a gutsy player but not much fun to watch and he seemed to negate Andy's flair so the rallies were long and often a bit tedious. The wind and the temperature didn't help but in the end he won and Ferrer must be very disappointed to have lost.
Nice to see Andy at number two - long may he reign ther till no 1 becomes his

Just got back from 2hr drive from Miami to see Andy pull out the squeaker. I was fortunate enough to have 3rd row seats, so even though it was very up-and-down with quite an unusual amount of unforced errors, the ending drama made up for the less than excellent quality. It was very hot, but strange that they couldn't handle just three sets (with the first two not all that close), whereas Grand Slams (and some in sweltering heat like today) they seem to be able to go on for double the court time. I wonder if they train drastically different leading up to Grand Slams...

Not too often that the top players are on court in the highest temperatures of the day in the slams. They often have the later afternoon/evening/night matches - except for Wimbledon of course but it's rarely that hot there? Glad you got to see the match, welcom to the forum

Ah, thanks for that...just checked out SonyOpenTennis.com interview transcript:

Q. You said you didn't know what would happen in the fourth and fifth set (if today's match was a major). What made this as tough if not tougher than the five sets you played against Djokovic in the US Open?

ANDY MURRAY: Conditions. I mean, started playing at 7:00 in the evening, and it was very windy and cold conditions. When we finished the match, it was cool.
You know, remember Rafa and Novak played here a couple years ago in a three set match and Rafa was I think in hospital after the match. You know, the conditions in Miami are extremely hard. It was very, very humid today.
Yeah, sometimes pressure and nerves or tension or whatever can add to that, as well. Yeah, there was a fair amount riding on the match. It was a big match for both of us, and I think that showed in some of the way that we played.
Didn't play necessarily our best tennis, and, you know, I was up a lot and couldn't close the match out. So, I mean, that's why matches like these ones are tough, because, you know, the humidity here is brutal.

Wow - lucky you to be there!

I really can't understand why some people feel so flat. I know the tennis was ugly in this match and that's been largely explained by the conditions - wind, heat, humidity. How many of us could stand up for any length of time in that, let alone run around for 3 hours. Everyone has their physical limitations, even the fittest and let's face it, these were 2 of the fittest you're likely to see pitting against each other but they both seemed to wilt physically out there. BUT..........one of them didn't wilt mentally.

For me this was one of the best and most significant matches I've ever seen Andy play. Why? Well, he said himself, a couple of years ago with all the breaking back and forth, he would likely have lost the match. He didn't spell out why that was so, but we all know.........and it's something we've said for a very very long time..........mental attitude.

The first major stride in the right direction IMHO was at the USO when he went from 2 sets up to 2 sets all. OK, he pulled himself together for the final set but.......he dominated it from early on and from there the win wasn't really in doubt.

Yesterday was an order of magnitude greater in the mental stakes IMHO. He had to fight to virtually the last point and on several occasions, when all looked lost. The only real chink of daylight between him and Daveed (and I'm not counting the 1st set) was in that tie breaker and chinks in tie breakers are very small things compared to sets. But he dug in, physically and mentally exhausted and guess what.........he WON and that sends a great message not only to other players who can now add him to the likes of Rafa and Nole for mental fortitude, but to himself. He finally knows it's worth fighting till the absolute last and that he can win when all is against him.

He didn't chunter, his shoulders didn't slump, he didn't look like he didn't want to be out there - ok he looked drained but in his eyes I could see he was still very much in contention the whole way. Andy has come of age mentally. Opponents beware!

Great post pabbers. Nail biting stuff and I was pleased Andy won but thought he was quite lucky to come through. Would it have been the same story if Ferrer hadn't challenged in the previous game or if he hadn't got cramp. It was great to see Andy not chuntering and looking positive throughout. Let us hope this win puts him in a good place for the forthcoming clay court season.

Great post Pabbers, I totally agree with everything you say here. Andy has arrived mentally and for me this win was right up there with the US Open. A pinnacle moment in his career for sure.

I couldn't agree more Pabbers - great post. Strangely, I always felt he would find a way through - even on match point. His shoulders never slumped and he seemed to have the same steely determination that he had at the US Open.

I certainly wouldn't be able to play for more than 10 minutes in those conditions. Hope they are both recovering well. I've never seen Ferru cramping before.

For me the best came from Andy when mp down and he had everything (or nothing, depending how you look at it) to lose and just played some really aggressive tennis, despite the exhaustion - reminiscent of the way he played in the final set at the USO. Then again he brought his best to the tiebreak, by which time Daveed was clearly in trouble, and yes, it could have gone either way (and of course one had to feel for Ferrer) but Andy really earned that win and it was so good to see him keep his cool when a few years ago (as he rightly said in post match interview) he would probably have lost that match.

A memorable match for all sorts of reasons and I too echo everything Pabbers has already said.

Great post pabbers. It was a significant win as Andy pointed out so honestly by saying he would have lost it a couple of years ago. He may have been making errors and didn't manage to serve it out but he seemed different even though he looked weary in those conditions. He was always determined but now he seems much calmer in his determination, doesn't panic and somehow plays a vital point when needed. I think it's we, his fans who aren't calm even though we tell ourselves that he'll come back and win......because we've seen him do it! The US Open just one example. He is definitely a different young man out there now and I thoroughly enjoyed the match even though I was standing and pacing for a lot of it. To see two fantastic players battling in that heat, wind and humidity just brings home how tough it is at the top of the tennis game. And, aren't we lucky to be loyal supporters of one of the greatest players. All hail Andy....No 2!!!!! He, and we have come a long way and with all the ups and downs wouldn't have it any other way. I was so happy after the match that I went and watched my dvd of the Olympic Gold Medal match.:yahoo::cheer:

I missed the semis and final as I had a busy family weekend. I was so sad not to be watching the final live and was following on livescore. I shouted out a big YEESSS when Andy won and had tears in my eyes, even though it was just livescore. Little did I know at the time what you had all gone through!

I watched my recording when we got home yesterday and I'm actually quite glad now that I didn't watch live. I was on tenterhooks even though I knew the result!! Brutal match. They both looked dead on their feet! It must be worse not having a day off between matches like they get at the GSs and having been to Florida in the summer, the humidity is utterly draining. I cannot even imagine playing one game of tennis in that let alone a near on 3 hour match!!

So proud to be an Andy fan! Loved your post Pabbers - says it all. Andy has most certainly come of age.
