"The Devil Dirt"

Andy's 'home' for the next 8 weeks is on the mucky stuff that stains socks and shoes and makes player who tumble over on it look half tanned. Gritty and slidey at the same time you either love it or hate it - and that's just the fans!!!

As for the players ... some grew up to play on it and are comfortable, others end up doing Bambi impressions for the duration. Andy is learning to be comfortable and this week we'll see if the work he and Lendl have put in can bear fine fruit.

Monte Carlo has a lovely setting, nestled off the South-West coast of France, and in this Round 2 encounter Andy will meet a Frenchman - Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

Muzzah leads their H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=R613)1-0 having despatched ERV in 3 straight sets at the 2012 AO 6'1, 6'4, 6'4 in R64. Any danger is likely to come from ERV having already played 3 qualifying rounds and a R1 match so he's got 4 solid matches under his belt.

Their match will be played on Wednesday, time tbc around this time tomorrow.

We'll keep you posted ...........

And on the red stuff the raquet doubles up as a 'clay remover' for trainers. Good luck Andy. By the way folks you can get odds as good as 16/1 for Andy at MC, not a bad each wayer with no Fed or Ferrer, I know he doesn't have pedigree on the 'least good surface' but it's a different Andy now isn't it?

I love, love, love the red stuff! Hoping Andy goes really far in this and all the clay this year. We know he can, remember how we'll he was doing until he met Rafa in the semis? a couple of years ago!?

Not sure where to post this but I'm sure the powers that be will move it if it needs to: I rang yesterday to haggle for Sky Sports and got it for £5 per month! Didn't even need to haggle, was told its cheaper because sport is finishing for the season! Told the Sky sales man he should be ashamed of himself with his great accent (Scottish) and he laughed and said yip Murray could do well soon if he got a break......:grrr: he was lucky he was on the phone! Anyway £5 is a great price and its for next 3 months.

Andy looking good on the devil's dirt. :boogie::swingin:

The penalty violation Andy received was ridiculous given he was waiting for his opponent who was adjusting the strings on his racquet. As he said to the tournament referee, "should I just serve then?".

Great win for Andy! Yes they mentioned a time violation someone got in Miami because they were waiting for the receiver to kill a fly!

Great win for Andy. :) He looked confident, was moving well, and used good variety in his tennis today.

The second time violation was very unfair. It seems at the moment that umpires are anxious about having to give a time violation every match, so much so that they're making mistakes. I've seen a few cases where the server's been penalised like Andy was today, just because they were either waiting for the receiver to be ready or waiting for the crowd to settle down.

Glad Andy found his feet quickly on the clay, though of course tougher battles lie ahead. He'll certainly need to be on form against Stan tomorrow but he got off to a good start and I'm sure he'll can rise to the challenge.

Caro - assume you have Sky - have you not got SKY on your phone or pc - you can remote record if you forget - we even do it from Portugal and it works fine. You can do it from My Sky on the pc or I have a Sky+ app on my phone and mini tablet.

I posted this on the newspaper thread but it belongs here too as its been a talking point - literally. There is a link to a short video clip of the second time violatoin.

si.com (http://tennis.si.com/2013/04/17/andy-murray-time-violation-monte-carlo/?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=t.co)- Andy Murray upset returners don’t receive time violations
Beyond the Baseline

“The only issue I have with it is in the whole time this year, in four months, I’ve yet to see the returner receive a time violation,” Murray said. “It’s always the server that gets given it, and you’re not allowed to serve if your opponent isn’t ready. So sometimes you’re waiting, if your opponent is doing his strings or whatever. So it’s important that the umpire checks both players because it’s not always the server that’s playing slow.

“The first one I agreed with, I said nothing about it. The second one I argued because I was looking to him, and he was doing his strings so that wasted another three, four seconds, and that’s why I lost the serve.”

Linda

I wonder if that was the subject of the very long discussion that Andy had with the ump before the coin toss today?

Well you need to look into it and have a practice before you go and before it matters.
