Laura plays Wozniacki in R1
Three more ranking places i.e. 35 to 32 ..... oh well, of all the top players, Caro is a bit more hit and miss this year.

Steven

Just to add a few basic stats to the bare bones of the draw:

L128: Laura Robson WR 35 v (10) Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) WR 10 (CH 1 in 2010)

Caro reached the RG QFs in 2010, the year she first became world no. 1 and has reached R3 at every other RG in the last 5 years. However, we all know what her form is like at the moment ...

L128: Heather Watson WR 50 v Stefanie Vögele (SUI) WR 58 (CH 56 last month)

H2H 1-1. Vögele was the player Heather beat (4 & 4) in the final qualifying round here in 2011 but she lost to her 1 & 2 at Memphis this year. Heather is 2-2 in RG main draws, Vögele is 0-1.

L128: Elena Baltacha WR 234 v Marina Erakovic (NZL) WR 91 (CH 39 last May)

H2H 1-0, Bally won 3-6 6-3 6-1 in Copenhagen (hard court) in 2010. Both have 1-3 main draw records at RG.

well Laura does have a reputation for rising to the occasion and taking out seeds.....

If Laura plays well and rises to the ocassion I think she has a good chance of troubling Caroline who has not been in the best of form lately, here's hoping she can cause another upset! Think it is a reasonable draw for Heather after the time out and hopefully she plays well, though maybe we shouldn't expect too much yet. I think it will likely be tough for Elena but she shouldn't have too much of a burden on her shoulders and can hopefully give a good account of herself. Sharapova seems to be in the tougher half of the draw with Azarenka and Kvitova (though Petra hasn't shone much lately) whilst Serena has Radwanska and Kerber. of course if Serena is in the zone again will be tough to stop anyway, though Rolland Garros hasn't been her happiest hunting ground in recent years.

Wow. This Urs Radwanska v Vee Williams match has been such a good match so far.

Looks like one Andy Murray has been enjoying it too. He's been tweeting the praises of Urzsula's court craft re: the quality of her lobbing.

It's 6-7, 7-6 so far. Oodles of breaks of serve. The contrasting of styles has however meant a lot of really good and varied tennis played.

Might be quite a nervous 3rd set, I think. Both players should fancy their chances of winning this - provided they have the energy.

On that front, Vee might be a concern..

Certainly an entertaining match, even if it would have nice to see a few more holds. Some comeback from Venus in that 2nd breaker, even if she's not quite the same player. Ursula up a break in the 3rd but of course may not be significant. I've been following the Twitter commentary too! oh it's now a double break!

I think that, in spite of all of the breaks of serve, this is the first time in the match that a player has been up a double break.

Venus looks pretty tired - and it is certainly now showing in the score. 4-0 to Ursy Rad.

I am a little perplexed by U-Rad. She is a much better player than her tour record suggests. I think that she had quite a bad back injury a wee while ago that didn't help.

Her game does remind me a little of her sisters - more aggressive though, I think.

Laura had bps in Caroline first two service games but couldn't make breakthrough, broken to go down 1-3 but breaks straight back. Come on!Unfirtunately Laura broken asfain and Wozniacki easily holds for 5-2,Laura's serve letting her down and a bit frustrated right now. Caroline takes the first 6-3.

Laura holds first game second set... .lengthy.. two DFs but pulls through.
Some of her first serve, winner combinations are awesome.
C'mon Laura!
1-1 then Caro breaks but with both of them playing top twenty tennis. That was not a drop by Laura but rather a gain by Caro.
Laura is really making her play well.
Win or lose, all good experience.
C'mon Laura!
Double break down now 1-4 but Laura gets a break back... very good for the future! 2-4 C'mon Laura!
Broken again and held. Laura loses 3-6 2-6

Still positive though. She was easily winning a lot of points. 6 DFs. When she sorts that out and gets more experience....
And Caro at times showed why she used to be No. 1. No disgrace...
But... get to 32 or above for Wimbledon and avoid the top players!

Brainless from Laura. You do not get into rallies with Wozniacki she wins them every time!!!!! You out power her she would have had no answer if Laura would have used her power.

I think Laura did use her power but she kept missing the lines - an inch here or there and it would have been a different story, particularly in the first set IMHO.

A lot of the time she won points on her (first) serve doing exactly that.

Despite an early break Bally really was outclassed and off the pace but of course early in her comeback and clay has always been her weakness surface Grass should do her more favours but still a challenge to get back to the same level. Didn't see any of the Bartoli match but looks like it was all happening there!

JAMES4578
29-05-2013, 18:34
Disappointing that Heather is also out but a tough battle and we can't expect everything to click straight away. The fact that Jovanovski beat Caro showing the Dane continues to be vulnerable, a pity Laura couldn't take advantage. Urszula Radwanska who put out Venus also went down in straights.

super8
29-05-2013, 22:01
Laura was definitely below par in her match - she was a step-slow and just couldn't quite get her game to click. For once, she couldn't raise her game against a top player.

I don't think she was classified as an underdog in that match. Maybe a little pressure against an out-of-form opponent?

As for Ula Rad, well that performance today explains why she hasn't fulfilled her promise as a junior player, why she isn't ranked as highly as her sister - who would have been her opponent in the next round, had she won.

A few upsets today, Kvitova went down in straights to Jamie Hampton-hope Petra can get some good form going on the grass! Jelena Jankovic has just beaten Sam Stosur 6-4 in the 3rd in a good win for JJ though disappointed for Sam. Earlier Schiavone easily beat Bartoli, Fran doing well again!

MARIA SHARAPOVA.

Svetlana having another good tournament as she beat Kerber 6-3 in the 3rd in a match of a few twists and turns. She will face Serena and has the memories of the 2009 win at the same stage but looks like it'll be much tougher this time. Erani has a bit of trouble breathing in the first set of her match but recovered to win in 3 ,whilst Radwanska made the quarters for the first time puting out Ivanovic in straights in the last match of the evening.

PS Have to say I was really annoyed with American tv for showing Serena's match live then again (in full) after Federer instead of the live match going on with Rad./Ivan. :grrr:

For those of you who missed the Fran v Vika match (which Vika won), here is the audio of a rally from that match (Vika serving):

Whoooooooooooo!
Bwa hee!
Whoooooooooooo!
Bwa hee!
Whoooooooooooo!
Bwa hee!
WHOOOOOOOO!
BWA HEE!
WHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
BWA..HEE..ARGHHHHH!

Line judge: "OUT!"
(Fist pump) "COME ON!"

Crowd exhales, relaxes, applauds

Rinse and repeat - and alternate order for service games.

Yes that was really painful. I think Azarenka is the worst of the bunch followed closely by Shazza.

Anyway, too bad Aza and Shazza are through. Sloane Stephens put up quite a decent fight. I think she's the best of the young bunch right now. I really like her. I do hope Laura and Genie can follow her lead soon. Good for Jelena getting into another quarter-final. don't know about her hot pink suit today, tho'! :rolling:

Of course Sloane put out a Grand Slam champion in Australia but wasn't in a position to do the same today though she played a fairly good match and is the pick of the new crop,a bit ahead of Laura and the others right now. Whatever you think of the grunts or squeals has to be said that both Sharapova and Azarenka have star quality even if not to everyone's taste. Though would be good if they could tone it down a bit at times! I like Fran a lot though and thought she would've given a better account of herself. JJ seems to have rejuvinated a bit this year and good to see her in another quarter, though Jamie Hampton wasn't really prepared for the situation. Mattek Sands who put out Li Na earlier was ousted in 2 tight sets by Kirkilenko. The American is just a bit different!

I was at a dinner party on Saturday night and we were chatting about the French Open and everyone there said the women's grunting really put them off from watching. I love tennis and it puts ME off. I noticed that Sloane, Laura and Eugenie don't scream at all - so refreshing. Even Serena has toned it down a wee bit - so it can be done!!!

PS Bethanie was feeling unwell during her match, too bad, I was hoping she'd win.

A good effort by Svetlana as Serena was tested for the first time but she ultimately went down 6-3 in the decider. Just wonder if she had been able to capitalise and take a 3-0 lead in the 3rd if that would have been significant as Williams wasn't totally strong mentally at some points. However it has to be said that Serena raised her game when it mattered. Can't really see Erani being as much of a threat but good tournament from the Italian again as she came through two tight sets with Radwanska.

I was shocked when I seen Maria was crushed in the first by Jelena, however felt she was likely to win if she could take it to a decider since Jankovic hasn't been at this stage for a while. However, pretty sure she wouldn't be able to recover from such a start against Vika who does seem a bit more comfortable on clay now and certainly not Serena. Another good tournament for Kirkilenko who could've been a threat had she taken the first.

JAMES4578

Felt it would be likely be one sided but that was a rout for Serena and even if she was in commanding form disappointing for a semi. Erani got 80% of her first serves in compared to Serena's 52% and whilst a disparity in power must have been so demoralising.Looked like a good contest between Sharapova and Azarenka which I shall watch shortly but Maria needs to cut down on the doubles and play a blinder to have any chance to come close.

Thought there were quite a few entertaining points, even if it was straight sets, think Maria done better than many expected but the serve wasn't totally reliable. pity she didn't hold for 3-0 having been 40-15 up as Serena wasn't fully in her stride early on but doubt it would have affected the outcome.

I think it is a very tricky one to schedule to be honest as logically it means you probably haven't got a ticket for the men's final. Perhaps they could just admit "defeat" and give a few thousand young tennis players and their families concessionary tickets!

Thrilled that Elena Vesnina and Ekat Mak won the doubles, although I expected the Italian pair to win.

Team Russia had lost to Team Italy in all of their previous 4 meetings.

It was both Elena and Ekat's first slam title of any description. Elena has lost a few slam finals in doubles - including that emotional Wimby loss with Vera Zvonareva in 2010 - so particularly pleased for her.

A real pity that it was so under attended. Such a shame that they didn't open the doors to a wider audience for this.
