View Full Version : French Open 2013 pick em for fun
Missing the pick em? Missing the feeling of tearing your hair out over GEMs ruining your brackets? Fear not, as you can continue your frustrations with this pick em for fun.:pierre:
Had a bit of time on my hands so I created a spreadsheet where you can enter your picks. Download the attachment, unzip the file and start predicting. :)
You'll need Microsoft Office or OpenOffice(which is free) to open the file. Just enter '1' beside the player you think will win and the player name will be filled in for the next round.
Scoring is the same as the one used in Steven's pickems. I'll keep track of everyone's scores but you can do your own too with the spreadsheet.
Once you've filled in your picks you can either zip the file and attach it onto a post in this thread or you can email the file to me (email address is in the file).
Best of luck to all. :trophy:
Deadline: Sunday 26th May 10am UK time
Ah, good stuff!
You ok with CC folk having the option to take part with this too?

Sure no problem, not a member of CC though so I can't post updates there.
I've updated the entry form with qualifiers added in.

Just saw this post! I wrote on this forum (http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?1900-BOTB-(Battle-of-the-Boards)-aka-the-inter-tennis-forum-Pick-em-competition&p=138611&viewfull=1#post138611) about running a comp but hey if that falls through at least we've got this! See we all have Simon to win and even though it wouldn't be good fot the comp, would quite like Hewitt to come through. Simon though taken 3rd so a 5th set thriller not out of the question.
Hewitt is up two sets on Simon - and I have Simon reaching R4
Nearly everyone had Simon going to R4 though so it won't do that much damage if Hewitt does win this. GUB is the only one who doesn't have Simon in R4 but Lacko instead.

Has gone to 5 sets but last few sets haven't been as exciting as I'd envisaged, Simon running away with it now at 4-0!!
Goodness knows why I picked Soeda over Sousa; I can only think I got confused over the similar names. My only wrong pick on the men's side so far.

Hey guys,
All the picks can be found here: All Picks (http://t3nnisfan.host-ed.me/Picks/Picks.htm)
I can't pick nice, matching colors if my life depended on it! What do you think? Any suggestions? Not just for color but anything really...
Anyway it seems a bit redundant that I did this considering Manaus had his own version. But, the names & associated seeding/entry types were not the same as what I have in my database. So I had to change them, which took long enough! The reason for that conversion is so that I can post your own personalized bracket which will be linked to your names on the above page when they become available. I have a busy day ahead... But hopefully I can have those up sometime tomorrow evening! *fingers crossed*
Cheers!

Well, that has completely messed up my pick'em - Berdy was supposed to reach the quarters :grrr:
Maybe most of us had Berdy to win several rounds,so it won't have less impact.
Picked Berdych to make the quarters or semis, I think!
I'm ok with being proven 100% wrong with that one. Much prefer Monfils' game.

Thanks T3ennisFan. Don't think it's redundant as it's a good time now to test things out before Wimbledon. Apologies if the way I had player names gave you trouble. The picks page look fine to me. I like having the seed numbers there as well but it's not a big deal. I also prefer green/red for right/wrong but that's just my preference and I realise that red backgrounds are not easy on the eye unless you go with a lighter tone or pink. Great work so far though!
Also, the entries I gave you for Big Al, fah51, Nevets and Super8 aren't part of the AMFF team but the CC Tennis Forum.

Whereas yesterday we were lulled into a false sense of security with the majority picks winning, we've resumed normal pickem service with today's muppeting!
3 matches went completely the opposite of what everyone predicted. Monaco started the muppet preceedings losing to Gimeno-Traver followed by Stepanek losing to wildcard replacement Nick Kyrgios (WR 262).
Biggest upset however goes to Gael Monfils, somehow managing to discard his GEM status to take out Berdych, the highest seed to fall so far. Nearly everyone had him going to the QFs with the exception of 3 people – DaveArneRiise and JAMES4578 (both choosing Almagro), and Pabbers (going with Gulbis). Well done to you 3 as you have the potential to gain quite a few more points.
Other upset matches involve Lopez beating 31st seed Granollers (well done Pabbers and Super8), Zemlja taking out Giraldo (well done greatunclebulgaria) and Sijsling beating Melzer (well done Cazza, greatunclebulgaria and JAMES4578).

Hey Manaus, great job with your speedy posting and stats! I may take you on for running the "replacement BOTB" for SW19 if you're interested?
Thanks for the feedback as well :) I like seeing the seed numbers too but again the database stands in the way and I can't think of a quick solution to displaying the names with seeds while still matching the names with the database :/ Yeah the background bothers me too... I'll try some theme with a lighter background then.
I'll make the changes for the 4 from CC!
Some reactions to matches:
Damn you Berdych! Monfils you damn muppet!!!
I also had Monaco going to Round 4/Round of 16... So disappointing for those 2 losses!
Floppy Disk over Granola Bar... Sousa or Soda... whole section is bonkers for me!
Brands took a set off of Nadal?!?! Wow for Brands! But, as far as Rafa's concerned, he had trouble with Isner but stlll won that year! No biggie as long as he gets the 'W'...

Rain, rain and more rain. Don't you just love it?http://delhigreens.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/playing-in-the-rain-smiley.gif
16 out of the 20 remaining round 1 matches were completed today. Just 1 match slipped by everybody, and that's qualifier Jack Sock beating Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
Other upsets include Guido Pella breathing a sigh of relief after beating Ivan Dodig 12-10 in the final set (well done DaveArneRiise and Nevets), Dmitry Tursunov taking out 22nd seed Alexandr Dologopolov (well done Linda) and 29% people predicting that 28th seed Florian Mayer would fall to Denis Istomin.
With round 1 nearly done CC forum member fah51 has a clear lead although Big Al and Linda have the least number of dead matches for round 2 (4 as opposed to fah51's 5).
Results:
Novak Djokovic [1] def David Goffin (100-0)

Day 4:
No rain delays today mean that we're back on schedule for the men's matches. The remaining round 1 matches went with the majority and most of today's round 2 matches went the same way, resulting in a pretty high scoring day.
Matches giving the biggest gains involve Lopez beating Sousa (well done Pabbers and Super8) and Troicki beating Gimeno-Traver (well done Sallydaisy).
The Monfils/Gulbis match was dead for everyone but Pabbers who could have earned more points if the latter won. Sadly for her, it was not to be.

Day 5
The wet weather continues resulting in less than half of the scheduled matches being completed. With the forecast not looking great for tomorrow either it looks like there's going to be a growing backlog as we head into the weekend.
Not much to report on with only 7 results. Linda could have gained 2 points over everyone else had Tursonov beaten Hanescu, but the opposite happened. Only other noteworthy highlight is 64% correctly picking 27th seed Fognini to beat Rosol, preventing a rematch between the latter and a certain Rafael Nadal.

Well, Round 2 is finally done!
Out of a possible 28 matches to be gotten correct for this round, Big Al and I managed to pull it off! That's got to be a 1st for me in BOTB! :boogie: It's given Big Al a chance to challenge long-time leader fah51! But, still losing on tie-breaker... This would also be a perfect time to know which of them have the most to gain in the next round so I've added a new column forecasting the next round's "SLR" as it's called in BOTB while keeping the current round's possible max also :)

There goes Raonic! Most of us had him losing to Ferrer in the next round, except for Sallydaisy who had him reaching the Semi-Finals! Ouch :banghead: Her only hope now is Seppi. We all have Almagro!
Too bad Monfils' fire fizzled out to Robredo, who's no push-over on clay...
I just realized that the picks highlight only works for a single round in advance and not the whole table! Trying to fix it before submitting the results.
Your chart is most impressive!
Hopefully not a bad day for me today - of course the Monfils/Robredo match was dead for me but other than that the only player who let me down was Cilic.

Day 6
No rain to be seen today so we're back on schedule once again. Most of the remaining round 2 matches went with the majority, with the biggest swing match being the Tipsarevic/Verdasco match, being a near 50-50 pick. Other significant gains involve 57% pick Isner beating Harrison and the 29% who picked Davydenko.
3 of the 8 R3 matches were picked correctly by everybody and 2 others went with the majority. Biggest swing match was the Anderson/Raonic match, a split 50-50 pick which Anderson won. Nobody scored on the other 2 matches, the Robredo/Monfils match being a dead match and the Troicki/Cilic match had 57% pick Cilic (who lost) with the other 43% picking already out Monaco.
With half of R3 done fah51 maintains the lead but Big Al has managed to catch up. The top 3 have all 8 matches live for tomorrow with fah51 and Big Al having the same picks. Linda has picked 1 match different, choosing Nishikori over Paire meaning that she could catch up tomorrow.
Full results:
Richard Gasquet [7] def Michal Przysiezny (93-7)
Rafael Nadal [3] def Martin Klizan (100-0)
Janko Tipsarevic [8] def Fernando Verdasco (50-43, 7 dead match)
Tommy Haas [12] def Jack Sock (86-0, 14 dead match)
John Isner [19] def Ryan Harrison (57-0, 43 dead match)
Stanislas Wawrinka [9] def Horacio Zeballos (86-14)

Edit: Make that 2 different matches for Linda, she also chose Tipsy whereas the other 2 went with Youzhny.
Vamos Nishikori! :swingin:
Great to see this running even if being away for a week Friday to Friday and with no internet access I completely missed this
Well done Nishikori! :cheer:
But unfortunately Tipsy lost. The strange thing is, I have Youzhny and not Tipsy in my Dream Team, so I've no idea why I picked Tipsy for this.

Warblefly81 10/10 today! (out of a possible 10 to be correct on) Went up 5 spots to #8 (tied but winning on tie-breaker)! GUB's % of max points now at 58.54% is dangerously close to Gorilla-land! :faint:
Updates at: T3nnisStats (http://t3nnisstats.webs.com/)

So I'm having a bad day, week, tournament hey I came prepared lots and lots and lots of bananas

Day 7
Biggest upset of the remaining R3 matches goes to (surprisingly low) 29% pick Kei Nishikori beating 71% pick Benoit Paire. The 14% who picked Youzhny also made big gains with the other 36% picking 8th seed Tipsarevic and 50% having a dead match. Other highlight is 57% picking Kohly to beat Hanescu (other 43% backing Dolgopolov).
Looking ahead to R4, JAMES4578 is the only one with all 8 matches live, giving him a chance to move up the table. The top 3 all have 1 dead match with the exact same picks, so there will be no movement there.
Full results:
Rafael Nadal [3] def Fabio Fognini [27] (100-0)
Novak Djokovic [1] def Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) [26] (100-0)
Kei Nishikori [13] def Benoit Paire [24] (29-71)
Richard Gasquet [7] def Nikolay Davydenko (93-0, 7 dead match)
Tommy Haas [12] def John Isner [19] (79-7, 14 dead match)

Omg... I can't believe Robredo's serving for the match!!! Another old-timer (Haas) making deep runs in tourneys this year after coming back from injury/surgery! I feel bad for Almagro... blowing a 2-0 set lead :/
I guess the majority of us had Berdych winning that match so it won't have much impact on the pick'em.

All 3 results are up-to-date (as of Federer winning the 1st set after dangling the "2nd game" carrot in front of Simon for what seemed like forever)!
But, what a round-the-pole shot from Federer! Vintage stuff! I don't think he's done one of those since 2007!
Also, the PICK % (http://t3nnisfan.host-ed.me/RG/Picks%20Distributions.htm) is now up and the predicted outcomes in green and the rest in red/burgundy. Enjoy! :)

Day 8
Rather 'boring' results today as 3 of the 4 matches went with the majority (although Simon nearly ruined a lot of pickems!) whilst the biggest gain match ended with no-one scoring as Robredo beats 14% pick Almagro.
Full results:
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga [6] def Viktor Troicki (86-0, 14 dead match)
Roger Federer [2] def Gilles Simon [15] (100-0)
David Ferrer [4] def Kevin Anderson [23] (93-0, 7 dead match)

I CANNOT remember for the life of me why oh why I chose Youzhny to win over Haas??? I saw that I was the only one who made that pick too... urgh!
Congrats to Linda, the new #3! Fah51 & Big Al still tied for 1st but fah51 winning on tie-breaker. All top 3 entrants now have >= 80% of max points as well!!!
Huge 50/50 match is the Gasquet vs. Wawrinka match currently taking place and it's off to a great start!
It won't affect #'s 1 or 2 but could change #3/#4 right back to the way it was! Good luck Linda/Wawrinka! ;)
http://imageshack.us/a/img594/4088/scoresr42.png
Day 9
The Djokovic and Nadal matches were 100% picks for the aforementioned players. The other 2 matches were more significant with the 64% who picked 12th seed Haas gaining some points whilst the Wawrinka/Gasquet match was the big swing match with a near 50/50 split. Pretty epic match with Stan the Man coming through after winning the final set 8-6.
Although there's no change in the top 3 there's quite a bit of movement with the rest of the table. Looking ahead to QFs the top 4 have the same picks so there'll be no change there. Sallydaisy and Pabbers could move up the table if their pick of Tsonga beating Fed comes true.
Full results:
Novak Djokovic [1] def Philipp Kohlschreiber [16] (100-0)
Rafael Nadal [3] def Kei Nishikori [13] (100-0)

Congrats Sallydaisy & pabbers for picking Tsonga's win! However, you both had Ferrer's win wrong! lol

Genbrit, GUB and Linda's got Ferrer... Should be very interesting!
As for me... :banghead:

Day 10
Ferrer beating Robredo gives 64% pickers some points but thanks to Tsonga causing the upset of the tournament so far and taking out Fed no-one was able to score the max number of points (and many have now lost a finalist). Well done to Pabbers and Sallydaisy for correctly predicting the upset. Both matches tomorrow are 100% picks for Nadal and Djoko but after what happened today who knows if they'll come through!
Full results:
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga [6] def Roger Federer [2] (14-79, 7 dead match)

Not updating the table today as everybody picked Nadal and Djoko to win so everybody gets 10 points.
For SFs everyone picked Nadal to beat Djoko but the other semi is a bit more interesting. Only 4 people can score points in the Ferrer/Tsonga match: Genbrit, greatunclebulgaria, Linda and Sallydaisy. Only Sallydaisy picked Tsonga whilst the other 3 went with Ferrer.
Linda has the most to gain from this match as if Ferrer wins then she tops the table and will win overall. fah51 will win if Tsonga is victorious. Good luck to the 2 of you. :)

Well, there goes my lone finalist and winner-pick! :smashed: Just to make myself feel even worse, I've included the Average Joe ROBOT who took over me considering most of the entrants picked Nadal to win the SF! Yeah! hehe
The addition of Av.Jo has changed the Pick % Distribution but I'll fix that sooner or later. I can't believe I still haven't been able to put up my special little surprise for you guys!
:baguette:Also I'll be doing an "Awards Ceremony" at the end of the competition; stay tuned!
The blackened names now represent people who have no hope left... (where's the strikethrough???) I mean people who have 0 possible picks in the next round and consequently in the remainder of the tournament...
I made some other fixes too including max highlights all over the Results Table. Feel free to let me know if you find any mistakes!

Okay, pick % fixed now. :)
Oh and I've added ranking points also! With a slightly modified formula; the lowest ranked entrant no longer gets 1 but receives 500/(# of entrants)
Congrats to Linda and Genbrit! It's a pity for GUB, who will stay last despite that low-% pick! But, congrats nonetheless! It guarantees inclusion in the "Awards Ceremony" ;)

Semi Finals
Ferrer beating Tsonga means that greatunclebulgaria, Genbrit and Linda gain 6 more points than everyone else - well predicted you 3!
Most importantly, those 6 points mean that Linda moves to the top spot after being in reaching distance for quite sometime. With everyone picking Rafa for the final Linda is guaranteed to win overall. Slightly premature but well done Linda!

Okay ladies & gentlemen,
It's not perfect (I see several issues already) but I wanted to make it available at least before the final takes place so... if you haven't noticed yet, your names in all the Picks pages were also links but if you clicked them, you'd have noticed that they didn't work! That's because I hadn't uploaded those files yet but the links were there in anticipation of them! ;)
Now, I've finally uploaded all the files! What are they? They are the bracket-shaped picks of each entrant in contrast to the linear picks seen in the picks pages thus far...
You may begin here: Picks (http://t3nnisfan.host-ed.me/RG/Picks.htm)
You might also notice that there are a lot of colors there and again, I apologize if it's too much or too confusing. I have a real problem with colors/styles! lol
Here's a simple explanation:
Basically, each round has its own color and if you got a pick right, it'll highlight it in that color, otherwise it's marked black with red font and the eventual winner shown either above or below the incorrect pick.
The green highlighting (which should only now show in the "Winner" column, indicates a seeded player. You'll see in Wimbledon how it looks in the beginning... that is if I haven't changed colors by then! :P
Everything else is gray!
Feel free to comment on it! :)

I left my run too late one of the top scorers last two rounds oh well back to the drawing board for Wimbledon and the secret is not to be top scorer at the end but the beginning :laugh::laugh::laugh:
Perhaps it's the start of a run of good luck that will continue into Wimbly? :)

Enjoying the match I hope! And how about that weirdness in the 2nd set? :surprised:
Any suggestions for "honorable mentions" in the awards ceremony?
Also, would any of you be interested in participating for a Halle Pick'em?
You might also notice that there are a lot of colors there and again, I apologize if it's too much or too confusing. I have a real problem with colors/styles! lol
.....
Feel free to comment on it! :)
I think its absolutely brilliant - its great to show the results like this in a bracket like picks style.
One comment on the colours though - I was completely confused - but I accept your apology  But otherwise its great.
Maybe it would be clearer to do something like the ATP bracket and have one colour for matches lost, another for matches won and different for matches not played yet rather than have a different colour for each round. Computer designers often try and stick to just a few colours and related shades on one screen.
You might also notice that there are a lot of colors there and again, I apologize if it's too much or too confusing. I have a real problem with colors/styles! lol
Great work on the brackets T3nnisFan. I agree with Cazza though, too many colours makes it confusing, I like her suggestion.
