Andy has a Pole to climb to reach the Final of Wimbledon 2013 ... and a powerful Pole at that.

He's up against Jerzy Boy - who many of us watched being beaten in 3 straight sets by Andy at Davis Cup and thought he was going to be quite good!!!

He definitely is now. But he's up against Muzzah who won't pass up on a chance to reach the Wimbledon Final without a massive fight.

H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=J397) is 1-1, Andy lost to Jerzy in Paris last year.

So, erm, yeah. Sofa time, get comfy, find something to calm your nerves and cheer like crazy.
'Cos I want to be watching Muzzah on Sunday afternoon when I'm up on The Hill.

Jerzy Janowicz: some commentators seem to think he's a pushover; most of them pronounce his name as if he's a pullover #research?

Steven ‏@GBtennis 3m

Yes & all they need to do is listen to @tennisnathii http://bit.ly/13sBZW9 RT @andym1990: @GBtennis Whilst others mispronounce all together

JJ was so emotional after his win, I wonder whether this will affect him for his next match.

Scared! Kind of hoping he'll let the occasion get to him

Andy needs to come out firing! Am hoping he will have learnt that from the Verdasco win

People may be saying that Andy has the easier run in now but the players he has faced are top notch on grass and on great form! Berdych let the occasiona maybe get to him when potentially able to come back and DelPo may be injured

Either way I fully believe Andy will win!

Well, I was dreading this match-up so much but after today I`m just relieved that Andy is through to play him at all!!! Mixed emotions really. I think it`s going to be really, really tough. But then if he had Potty it would probably be worse.

Just watched highlights of their rematch in Paris.

Boy has a monster serve. Think he had about 30 aces today. Andy will need to make his return is on. Brings back memories of play karlovic. This is going to be a tough match

If Andy can read JJ's serve and is returning at his best, it shouldn't be as bad as all that. Think how well Andy always played against the Karlovic serve ....

Karlovic does not move as well as JJ and JJ has a better forehand and backhand than Karlovic.

As I said earlier I don't think Andy will win this but I am hoping Andy proves me wrong and my lack of faith is punished. But if i'm right I am still proud of Andy, 5 Wimby semi's in a row is something that has only been done about 5 times before. PLEASE prove me wrong Andy and make me look silly.

I must admit JJ looked the better player based on today's exploits. Of course Andy has the advantage of having done it before and being WR2, but then it's been a mad Wimby...

Karlovic doesn't have the ground strokes that JJ haS, nor the mobility. For such a big guy he moves so well and his range of shot is amazing.
Hopefully Andy will be able to spot a few weaknesses early on but I think we're infor another :coaster: folks

As was said about Verdasco - he had nothing to lose, and neither has Jerzy. Andy has got to be tired physically and mentally, JJ has beaten him before - he is young and fearless. Having said all that, Andy has the big occasion experience to call on and success returning huge serves. Jerzy has had his arm taped throughout the tournament but has shown no signs of pain or discomfort.

I wasn't worried at all about Verdy but have worried all along about a meet-up with this boy, so who knows?

traveller7
04-07-2013, 09:06
It is a concern yes, Andy has to serve well and hold his serve and take it to tiebreaks as dont think he will get the chance for many points on JJ serve no free points unless he DF. The occasion may tighten JJ up a bit and Andy should take advantage of that. This is also the best player JJ has faced yet in this tournament so its gonna be tough for him too.

Yes - I've been meaning to go back and check his route through. I think the serve will be the main problem for Andy. Even if JJ is better than Karlovic, once in a rally Andy should stand a good chance of coming out on top :cauldron:

When Andy won the US Open, his path was far from straightforward. Who can forget that coaster of a match with Floppy, not to mention the first 2 sets of the quarter final v Cilic! By the time he came to play Berdych in the semis (who had just taken Fed out), I was personally very worried. If that match could have been swapped for a semi against JJ on grass, who wouldn't have taken that at the time? However, look what happened!! Let's keep the faith in our Andy, who is now an old hand at Grand Slam semis and wants it more than anything!! Andy may not be playing at the level he was when he won the Olympics (although lets hope he finds it tomorrow) but one thing's for certain, Andy will fight for every single point and JJ will know that he is going to be very very difficult to beat. Is JJ up to that mammoth task?

I believe that Andy will win this match

Checked - first round, Kyle Edmunds 3 sets, 2nd round Stepanek - retired injured, 3rd round Almagro 3 sets (hmmm Almagro's no push over), 4th round Melzer, 5 sets (so getting a set off JJ can be done, even by a lesser player than either Almagro or Andy :cauldron:) and then lastly Kubot (who's he ;)?) 3 sets

Judging by the way Janowicz was a complete mess after his 1/4 this is more than Andy could of dreamed of as a semi final opponent, maybe with a bit more experience Jersey could challenge for a slam but for now I think the Murraycoaster has come to a rest until he faces Nole on Sunday........C'mon Andy!!!!

JJ wa so emotional after the match. He hugged Kubot for half a minute or so, he was lying on the grass, he was crying for a while. Surely such huge emotions should make him feel emotionally drained for quite a while. I wonder how long it will take JJ to recover from this.

Oh dear.

Almost wish I hadn't looked but JJ had 30 aces in the quarters alone and 58 winners to 14 unforced errors but obviously Andy is a different class of opponent. whilst it could certainly be a tough encounter if Janowicz is in top form as long as Andy has a good serving day,his returns should be superior and I believe he can come through this. Of course it's possible Jerzey won't handle the occasion particularly well as he was emotionally drained yesterday, though of course we can't count on it.

He is top of the standings for breaks of serve, having done so 24 times in five matches

Agreed. Although looking at JJ's route here, Andy is really the first major grass court opponent JJ has had so far. Yes Almagro is a tough matchup and I'm slightly concerned that JJ beat him in straights though I don't rally rate Almagro that well on grass.

The thing I think that will make the difference is the fact that because everyone is slightly worried about this matchup, Lendl and Danni will have lots to say about tactics and that will help!

In profile: Jerzy Janowicz - http://www.sportsmole.co.uk/tennis/wimbledon/news/in-profile-jerzy-janowicz_91950.html

Almagro is one of the best returners in the game, but Janowicz allowed the Spaniard just 19 points on his serve throughout their three-set match, dishing up 30 aces in the process.

A quote from the Express

Janowicz was taken aback by his victory, dropping to the deck before embracing Kubot and swapping shirts. He was still in a state of shock in the post-match press conference and his eyes were bloodshot from crying.

Once again most if not all the sets may be decided on the worst service game of one of the players or the best tiebreak.
There is a level of serving that even Andy cannot get back.
However, the top ten players in the world are not the top ten servers in the game (though many in the top ten have healthy service games!).
And why not Because in a typical 6-4 or 7-5 set very often the great server has a double, the returner guesses right a couple of times and/or gets a couple of UEs and more than usual second services and wins four points before the server has got three or deuce etc...

I always feel it is often in Andy's hands and, even more importantly, his head.

1. Hope he is less nervous given what happened yesterday.
2. If he has one wayward loss of concentration in one service game in three sets, he might lose.
3. Otherwise as I have heard from Andy, Rafa, Roger and Nole in their interviews, matches with servers like Karlovic often come down to two or three points. 4-4 in the TB . Taking the single BP offered in the set. Andy sometimes tends to be a bit prolifigate with early BP opportunities. Not tomorrow please.

Lots of patience. Lots of easy games to JJ I suspect. This match is mainly about Andy's focus to hold serve regularly and comfortably and maximise any BP opportunities. If JJ fires down an ace, so be it, but otherwise take his chances.

PS And JJ like drop shots. Hope Andy avoids the danger of mentally getting into a "my drop shot is better than yours" competition (didn't he do that negatively last time if I remember?).

Good luck Andy!

I hope Janowicz plays well, and is not overawed by the occasion. I don't want Andy to win because his
opponent is tired or overawed. I want Andy to win because he is the better player.

But, even if Janowicz plays his best, I am confident Andy will win. And I'd be surprised if it's another 5 setter.

But all our speculation will make no difference to the result.

What could make a difference is the support of the crowd. They clearly like Andy much more now than they
did at last year's Wimbledon. So I hope they cheer themselves hoarse, and roar on Andy to victory.

Do people on here reckon that Andy's returning from deep on the 1st serve tactics he's used so far in this event will serve him well against the 140 mph Pole, or do you guys reckon he should step in a bit to negate the high bounce that JJ gets. Personally I think Andy will play it safe at 1st and move an extra step back to give himself the best chance of getting the 1st serves in play and giving the Pole a chance to miss with his ground strokes, and look to step in and attack any second serve opportunities. If Janowicz is on form though and getting a lot of 1st serves in it could be a similar match to the semi against Roddick a few years back, when Andy was beaten by the serve, and if that's the case Andy will need to attack a bit more. The good thing is, Andy is so much better at attacking tennis these days than he was when Roddick beat him so I'm saying that if JJ serves well then Andy wins a classic with some amazing attacking tennis, but if the occasion gets to the Pole and his arm is tight on serve then Andy will let him beat himself and win a fairly mundane match easily in straight sets, either way he's gonna do it and make the final. What do you think guys?

Boris Becker said Andy was staying too far back against verdy and needed to come forward more. Looking at JJ qf he doesn'tilike coming into the net too much prob cos he is tall, so Andy needs to return well, go into the net and return low so JJ has to go down low to pick up which he wont like. What do you think guys?
what an interesting post, thanks. yes, I reckon andy will need to stand back at first, at least until he has got his eye in against the serves. and JJ doesn't hold back on second serves either, so andy's usual practice of moving forward on second serves will need to be very clever. andy needs to be secure in his service games, I wish he did not always want to serve second. that makes him so vulnerable to losing 5-7 when he needs to secure a tiebreak. I can see tiebreaks being important today. you're right, andy volleys well and I think playing at the net, either serve and volley - kubot did well with this - or your prescription of drawing JJ in, though he does move well. and JJ dropshots well, there may be several groan moments from andy's droppers.

Andy turns pro 2005 wins-----over 400.......Numerous titles. JJ turns pro 2007 wins 35 (that's right folks, 35).......0 Titles, oh and you can throw in 28 defeats too. This year he has a win/loss of 15/12, why are we so worried? When you consider it should have been one of the two greatest players ever for Andy today, we should be delighted with a guy who has this record in Andy's way and full of confidence that it will be a breeze. That's not how it works though is it guys haha?

Also in todays paper JJ said reaching he final would be 'nothing special'! With an attitude like that I hope Andy destroys him out there! :grrr:

I do have to admit that I feel somewhat apprehensive about this match this afternoon.

I have a horrid feeling that Janowicz may win in 4 tight sets but if Murray can do what he did against Raonic at the US Open then he stands a good chance of reaching the final.

Having said that, Janowicz is a better player than Raonic.

I so hope that I'm wrong.

I would recommend patience in the first set. Andy may need a set to tune in to JJ's serve. He has often taken around a set to start returning a specific kind of serve.
So... let's allow Andy time to get that return perfected! C'mon Andy!

PS Pretty certain now to be teaching during the match so will surreptitiously be livescoring!
