Novak Djokovic has a shot at tennis history next month, when he attempts to complete a sweep of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments in Cincinnati.

Should the World No. 1 win the Western & Southern Open for the first time, he would become the first singles player to win all of the ATP World Tour's nine premier events.

The achievement would be so unprecedented, that we don't even have a name for it!

 Let's hope Andy stops him!

Would be nice for Nole to have something Fed hasn't achieved!!

Would prefer for it to be Andy.........still a possibility for the future.

If Nole did that, Master Nole has a certain ring to it!
Of course I want Andy to win but that really would be something special and worthy of respect. And after all, where it is Indian Wells and Miami, or these two, winning back-to-back Masters is probably at least as if not harder than winning a slam. Put another way, if Andy does not win both, I would not begrudge Nole this. (Pabbers - I do not see Andy winning the clay Masters that easily unless his back were to have a sensational recovery!).

I agree David and it would be a great achievement for Nole who after all is a great player. Of course all of us here want everything for Andy but I have alwats been one to give credit (sometimes grudgingly!) where it's due.

 That's probably why I don't remember.

So Andy can gain some points then before the USO? Altho' I know his Olympics points are coming off.

Since it seems pretty rare for anyone to win the Canadian Masters and Cincy back to back, I'm happy to wish Nole all the best for Cincinatti - what an achievement that would be !. Obviously my very best wishes are dependent, just a little, on Andy winning in Canada. Who is going to stop him - particularly if Nole has his eye on that final Masters title ?

Mickey
31-07-2013, 13:57
I think the fact that Djko has never won it and that Andy has won it twice could be the reason why he doesn't win it and Andy wins it for the third time.

The Cincy draw is out ...
... and there's a potential rematch for Andy in R2 against Gulbis if he beats Youzhny in R1.
Deffo chance to avenge this week's loss in Montreal.
:sofa:

Andy's potential route to the Final.
L64: Bye
L32: Gulbis or Youzhny
L16: (14) Fognini / Stepánek / Benneteau / Baghdatis

QF: (6) Berdych / (9) Wawrinka
SF: (4) Rafa / (5) Fed
FI: (1) Nole

Full draw to come later today.

Trust Andy to get Gulbis twice in a row. Time for revenge. If he gets past that he has a good chance of making the semi final

Tough opener for Andy but sure he'd perform better against Gulbis if they meet. In the tougher half this time of course with Nadal and Federer (though of course Roger not been in the best of form lately whist Rafa seems to have put the Wimbledon disappointment behind him)

Would prefer for it to be Andy.........still a possibility for the future.
Would be nice but doubt it especially on 3 clay Masters, Andy seems to be picking on the crubs just now at the 1000 Masters, Miami excepted, he had done great in the past but don't what's wrong these days. He seems to be more focused on Slams but there are 9000 points to be gained on 9 Masters series.

Linda
10-08-2013, 17:32
Or 6000 points if you don't include the clay ones - which is still a lot of points, equivalent to 3 slams!

Andy wasted no time heading to Cincy ... tweets from Smitty8, a sometime forum member!
this was about 6hrs ago, 03.30 UK time but 10.30pm in Cincinnati.

V. Smith ‏@vjsmith8 (https://twitter.com/vjsmith8) 6h (https://twitter.com/vjsmith8/status/366735878372081666) Ran into Andy Murray and Nicholas mahut in whole foods about half hour ago

V. Smith ‏@vjsmith8 (https://twitter.com/vjsmith8) 6h (https://twitter.com/vjsmith8/status/366736520129945601) i ran into Nico when he was looking at pasta sauce and when I rounded the corner after getting vitamins, ran into Andy & team getting food to go. Let me guess. Sushi. I was not expecting hat! I didn't think they'd be here already!

The full Singles and Doubles Draws are now in the first post of this thread.
No British players in the doubles so there won't be a separate thread for that event.

Andy Murray is the only British player in action at this event; Laura Robson not entered because of a continuing problem with her wrist and Heather Watson lost her FQR match.

If there is a downside to Gulbis losing then it's the fact he won't now be seeded at the US Open and will be a dangerous floater in the first round. Somebody else can have that privilege as I think Andy deserves an American wild-card by the name of Collin Altamirano! Who? ;)

Nah, we want a hard draw for Andy at the US Open. When Andy had a hard draw for the US Open last year he won it!!!! In fact he had a hard draw for the Olympics last year and Wimbledon this year too.

You may be right as I think Andy's hardest draw and I would argue one of the hardest draws ever was Wimbledon 2012, Davydenko, Karlovic, Baghdatis, Cilic, Ferrer, Tsonga and then of course Fed. All had been ranked in the top 10 with Karlovic top 15.

16-08-2013, 10:23
A 2 time former Cincinnati champion, current holder of 2 slams, Olympic gold medallist and World #2 is yet again banished to Grandstand in favour of Delpo/Tursunov. Andy must have expected to be on the Stadium court especially after not being there yesterday and this kind of decision is a distraction which he doesn't need when preparing for a match. Apparently Delpo said he was suffering pain in his wrist and would decide this morning if he was going to play but even if he withdraws, they can't just put Andy's match on first as a replacement.

Well done Rafa. :pirate: :bravo: Tough loss for Fed as he played the best match I've seen him play for a while. He fought hard, was aggressive and played some brilliant shots but just wasn't quite good enough to beat in form Rafa. His fans should be happy with that performance, but no doubt they will not be happy that he is #7 and has suffered another loss to Rafa.

Fed imo did not take the loss well - he didn't look at Rafa, gave him a very lukewarm handshake at the net, and couldn't get off the court quick enough. :grrr:

Well done John Isner - he played a great match with brilliant serving to knock Nole out. :bravo: As usual Nole took the loss well and had a smile for John. Should be a great semifinal between Delpo and John.

Rafa is undoubtedly a hugely talented tennis player but I just don't believe that anyone suffering with the injuries he is purported to suffer with could possibly comeback after a break of seven months (presumably after little practice and/or fitness training) and do what he has done. I can perhaps accept his success on clay where he has always been dominant but on hard courts which are supposedly the most damaging to his knees? I'm sorry but, in my book, it defies credibility. I don't know what's going on but it is most definitely suspicious. Just my opinion, of course, and I have no wish to upset Rafa' s many ardent fans.

For me it will be interesting to see how Rafa performs at the USO, he is surely going to be a bit weary after playing back to back tournaments and winning them, where as Andy, Novak and Roger are going in relatively fresh, I did wonder about Novaks match against Isner did he play badly on purpose to get more time off befor the big one, only a thought, but then I seem to have to much time for thinking these days.

Alis
18-08-2013, 11:00
I do think that the better players have 'strategic' losses from time to time - I'm convinced that Andy's loss to Chardy last year was one such. I'm not suggesting that Andy's loss to Berdych this year was but I also don't think he would have wanted to risk losing to either Rafa or Roger in the semis so close to the USO. Djoko/Isner - maybe?

I have read many comments, not just on here but on twitter and other forums too that some are suggesting Rafa is faking his injury or cheating. Can we not just appreciate how phenomenal an athlete he is? To do what he has done is remarkable after all he has been through, the determination, the motivation he has to succeed and overcome adversity. It makes me sad to think that people are suggesting he is cheating because of his successful comeback.

Funny his knees are perfect on the court and then taking stairs one at a time. As someone with a knee problem I could not move as Rafa does even for 1 minute.

Not all knee problems are the same. I thought that Rafa travels the tour with expensive equipment ( laser machine??) which helps his knees and injuries and helps them repair much quicker, and is probably not equipment most players can afford.

Hopefully be a good match but i have a feeling will be one sided
The tugging still annoys me greatly and the longevity of Nadals serving (averaged about 25 seconds in last match against Fed) is ridiculous he needs to be, as anyone should be, penalized for taking too long. He has started to tug when waiting for the serve now too puts me off watching him now i'm afraid which is a shame as always used to enjoy watching him play.

Sadly, in this digital society that often happens and gets out of hand.

Our code of conduct is very clear about the above - and the right of posters to support whichever players they like besides Andy (the main focus of this forum) so please respect that others may not hold the same views as you about a particular player.

:thanks:

I'm not aware that anyone has made 'allegations' here - nor has denied any other poster the right to support a player other than Andy. Certainly, I was merely expressing an opinion. If that is against the code then I shall, of course, make sure that I keep my opinions to myself in future.

Which would be a pity...

We must enjoy all these players while we can. I personally hope that Isner, Raonic and Janowicz don't make it to London as I find them either boring, arrogant and I better not put my opinions of Janowicz on here!! Stan had better get a move on as I cannot see Tsonga making London this year.

I hope Milos DOES make it. Don't understand all the Rafa negativity at all. He is such a great player and such a humble and kind person. Makes me so

I agree with you, Fiona. More and more commentators are coming round to the realisation that Rafa is the greatest player ever.

Here we go! Vamos Rafa!

Whilst it looked like Isner had a shot at 15-40,Nadal didn't give him another chance really and wouuld imagine he'll find a way in the breaker, would be more interesting if Isner can put him under more pressure though.

tiebreak - and it's 3-3 and on serve at the change of ends

First to blink will lose the set I reckon.

Rafa holds 2 for *4-3.

Isner *3-5 as Rafa now gets the first mini-break.
*4-5 and Rafa has 2 serves to take the first set.

Ooooh, Isner broke back.
Rafa *5-5 with another serve to come.

*6-5, Rafa held one of his serves and that gives him a set point.
6-6*
6-7* and Isner now has 2 set points.
*7-7
*8-7 and now 2 set points to Rafa.
8-8*
9-8* mini break to Rafa, and that's a set point again on his own serve.
*10-8 and the first set to Rafa.

Exciting breaker as Isner came back but couldn't quite take his chance and will likely be more difficult for him in the 2nd.
