that must be why I'm confused. of course being 3 does mean he could meet djo in the semi not the final - would that be better than rafa in the semi?

I presume you're both basing your comments on the Entry List in the first post???

The information in the thread is absolutely correct ... and remains thus until the draw is done.

So, if you look at the detail you'll see that it answers your queries.
See notes in red.

MENS SINGLES ENTRY LIST
Entry deadline and ranking on July 15 2013 this is the date that players are considered officially committed and, as clearly stated, their place in the listing is based on their ranking on Monday 15th July 2013.
Andy was ranked #2, hence he's 2nd in the list below.
Seeding will be based on rankings as at August 19 2013 so the USO organisers will take this same list below +/- any amendments/withdrawals and re-assort it per the rankings as of yesterday Monday 19th August in order to establish the seedings i.e. the top 32. In that list Andy will be #3 and so be seeded 3rd.

This is how ALL the ATP events operate which is why the Entry Lists are prefaced with the dates which apply.

Hope that helps.
:)

Seeing the above, it seems Rafa has now leapfrogged Andy AND Ferrer - it's hard to believe Daveed has hit such a dramatic loss of form as he has always been one of the most consistent players in the top 10. I wonder what's going on with him? He's so low-profile, I wonder if he has a niggling injury.

Ferrer has been injured - he twisted his ankle in his first match at Wimbledon and had to play the rest of the tournament with pain-killing injections. He took a month off after that so hasn't been able to do his usual amount of practice.

He never does particularly well in Canada/Cincy though - last year he skipped Canada and lost his first match in Cincy to Wawrinka. He should be in better form by the USO as he usually does well there.

It's amazing how Rafa has been able to leapfrog Andy and David with only 1 slam counting in his ranking (plus a round 1 exit). Shows how dominant he's been in all the other tournaments since his comeback - he must have felt really motivated after his break to get back to the top of tennis again.

If Rafa is healthy he is unbeatable. Mentally he is a brick wall. I think Andy did not want to face him in the Semi last week and did not give his all against Berdych, he did not want a dent in his confidence before the US Open. Comments anyone ?

I must admit I hadn't thought of that and would be surprised if Andy had made a conscious decision to do that but you could have a point, rouges.

I don't believe that. Andy has always said that he relishes the chance to play against Rafa and Fed, to test himself against probably the two greatest tennis players of all time. After that amazing match against Rafa at O2 a couple of years ago, he said "matches like today are the reason I play tennis" - even though he lost!

PS here is a pic of Andy practising today. He seems to have a nice new haircut.

Rather than calling Nadal unbeatable look at the fact that he was pushed to 3 sets by both Baby Fed and Fading Fed and if Isner hadn't choked in the tie-breaks...... He's not invincible and Andy relishes such challenges but first they've both to reach their allotted positions.

Andy's first round match is going to be interesting with this new pressure of defending champion, I'm thinking it might be better if it's not against an American even one of their many wildcards.

Just noticed Berdy can only meet either Anderson or Wawrinka. He has the cushiest draw up to that R4 match with Lorenzi, Kudla/Vesely and Benneteau in R3. Rafa seems to have the trickiest opening rounds with Harrison and Pospisil likely in R2.

Andy never seems to get a qualifier or wild card to start off - maybe that's for the good.
Llodra is no easy opponent although he is the sort of player Andy enjoys playing against. If he gets past that one (and he certainly should ?!?!?) then it shouldn't be too much trouble till the Bird Man. Let's hope someone can whip up the wind !

Think a reasonable draw for Andy even I wish he had avoided being in Berdy's quarter, however I'm sure it would be a different Muzzah should they meet again over the longer distance. On balance I think it's probably better to be in Nole's half, whilst Rafa has a few potentially tricky encounters even if he has been the form player in the run up. However, not thinking of the latter stages at this point. Djokovic v Dimitrov could be one to look forward to too!

Okay draw really, yes hard in places but I'm happy with that. Rafa in other half is good news, Berdy quarter and Nole semi will be tough but he beat both to get his title last year on the same court, that's bound to help him mentally!

Not too bad a draw for Andy - it could be a lot worse. Possible match up against Berdych/Wawrinka in the quarters and Novak in the semi-finals.

The danger players seem to be in Rafa's half. Federer should be OK until the last 16 with a possible match up against Nishikori and either Isner or Rafa in the quarters.

Go Andy

Maybe you're just more open about it! ;) actually I'm happy now the pressure is off. Yes lots of points to defend but think the title will be more important for Andy to defend than the points and they go hand in hand. Let's just enjoy the ride, it's in Andy's capable hands........just remind me of this in a couple of weeks and shorter nails later (maybe!)

No absolutely not.....I've been feeling just the same. Its not only the status but all those points that could go down the drain. I've just loved it whilst Andy held 2 slams and the Olympic Gold.
But then last night I watched the Wimbledon final through for the first time. I had forgotten just how brilliantly Andy played and handled Novak. By the time he gets through to the end of the tournie he'll have got his winners head on. He may not win but he will take some stopping

Andy's projected route:

R1: Llodra

So could Nole or Rafa face Federer potentially in the quarters?

So without the wind he wouldn't have won??????.............

The critics were saying the wind was certainly an advantage for Andy and not Berdy. Here is an extract from a newspaper report

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2012/sep/08/andy-murray-tomas-berdych-us-open

He had not long come off Arthur Ashe Court against Tomas Berdych, the 6ft 6in Czech whose unquestioned talent was consumed in the wind that howled around them for nearly four hours, suffocating his high-toss serve and spreading doubt in his every move as Murray held off his early assault and late charge to win 5-7 6-2 6-1 7-6.

To say it was challenging tennis would be an understatement.

Both said these were the toughest conditions they had played in, although Murray cited his Scottish upbringing and a final in Indian Wells against Rafael Nadal as good preparation.

Berdych acknowledged that Murray dealt with the conditions, "much better than I did", but said the game's administrators should consider high winds in the same category as rain. There was a case, he said, for calling the match off.

Shame Dan will hardly have time to draw breath - however, there's such a thing as momentum....

The US Open is covered by Sky and Eurosport. Eurosport don't always have the matches at the end of the tournament though. The BBC do not have television rights for the US Open. Last year it was covered on the radio by BBC Five live.

Yes, it was either last year or the one before that I paid for Eurosport Player only to find that they were only showing the matches of the women and some of the lower ranked men - none of the top men at all. I complained and got my money back. I also would pay for a good livestream. If only TennisTV covered the Slams as well as the Masters - I wouldn't mind paying a bit extra for them to do that.

I think Eurosport only have rights to the 2nd choice match - i.e. the one Sky don't want to show, and hence no live coverage of Andy. Last year I paid to turn Sky sports on for a month - haven't yet decided whether to do that this year. I think I'll see what streams are available for the first day or two.

Yes - Pat Cash in Sunday Times said that there is not enough time between Wimbledon and the Us Open and too many
extra commitments that come with being defending champion. Apparently he say the lack of fire in Andy's eyes in Cincinnati against Berdych and its all understandable but means he won't win or go far.

Would that be related to her bout of glandular fever though? She probably still doesn't have the stamina she had a year ago to fight out long matches. It's a pity she didn't capitalise on that chance in the 2nd set but credit to Halep who looked down and out at that point and gave herself a good shake and came back to win.

Don't care what anybody says, the defending champ should get the advantage of playing on the 1st day, I can't think of another sports event where the champion is disadvantaged in this way, 7 five set matches in 12 days could be the ask now, so at least one occasion where Andy will have o play on consecutive days, and if that happens to be after a five setter, I don't even want to think about it now, it's making me angry :grrr:

Milos played very well last night. Better than I've ever seen him play before. A marked change of tactics - he kept coming to the net and partaking in a bit of S&V. Hope he goes far.

The John Isner-Monfils match was also very entertaining. I was rooting for Monfils and so was a lot of the crowd who kept chanting his surname. Strange to say the least.

The Thursday night matches on Ashe were the dullest ever with Wozniacki against Scheepers and Nadal & Dutra Silva, the crowd made Queens sound like a bear-pit. But look who's back for the prime time Saturday night slot, Wozniacki against the lowest ranked player left in the draw, Giorgi plus a whipping boy match for Federer. I believe it costs $600 for a front row seat on Ashe at night! The US Open have their favourites (of which the defending champion isn't one) and regardless of who they play they get the prime spots.

I notice that Ferrer is on Grandstand again tomorrow. He has played twice on Lois Armstrong and twice on Grandstand. Still to get a match on Ashe!!! I know no one really thinks of him as #4 but he is at the moment and so I think it unfair that he still hasn't played on Ashe. Needless to say I am annoyed at Andy being the only one of top three to play on Armstrong but at least he has played Ashe. And, I'm saying nothing re Fed!!!! Sorry, rant over. :grrr::lol:

I have noticed in the past that Ferrer does not get the same treatment as well. As regards Andy, my main concern is being on Ashe in the second week. It is frustrating when he is not in the first week but the nightmare would be not on Ashe against somebody like Berdych.

Golden Lady
02-09-2013, 10:10
It's very obvious that the US Open puts the TV ratings before what's best for the players themselves. Although Ferrer maybe the world no 4 and for that reason alone he should have played on Ashe by now, the bottom line is that he is not considered 'box office'. True tennis fans would think this is a disgrace and quite rightly so. At Wimbledon, each of the top players would play at least 1 match on the no 1 court but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if Nole, Nadal and Fed continue to play all of their matches on Ashe. If that happens and Andy gets Armstrong again then :grrr::grrr::grrr: It has seriously annoyed me thus far!

I was out all day yesterday and caught up late last night on my PVR. Luckily CBS showed the entirety of the men's doubles between Team USA and Team Canada. I really enjoyed the first two sets until Daniel Nestor imploded and lost his serve four times. They should have and could have won the entire match because they were a break up in the second set. Daniel was the weak link. Disappointing. BUT Vashy was a real star and he was awesome. Can't see the Bryans not winning their golden slam - and they totally deserve it too.

As for the singles, other than Andy's match it was rather dull I thought. There have been so many one-sided matches so far.

Going back to tv ratings I've heard many grumblings about the lack of great matches on Ashe during the first week. Last night the commentators from Tennis Channel sounded so disappointed that the tennis was over by 10:15. I did not understand why they chose to put Caro on Ashe TWICE in the evening either. Why??? She's not a top five player and she's never won a slam so why???

I would tend to agree. Other than the Hewitt/Delpo match, and Dan Evans there really isn't one I've got excited about (other than Andy's of course but that's often nerves not excitement!)

The whole tournament has been pretty flat. I still think there could be some substance in the rumour that the draw could well be tweaked, but it doesn't do anything for excitement in the first 10 days

I too think that the treatment of Ferrer, the world no. 4, is an absolute disgrace - twice on Armstrong and twice on Grandstand and never on Ashe at all, whilst the world no. 7 is on Ashe all the time. And of course, as others have said, it is all to please the TV networks by putting the players who are considered to be 'big box office' on Ashe.

And talking of TV, does anyone else think that the TV coverage is visually not very good? I have watched streams of both Eurosport and Sky and they presumably both get the feed from US TV. They just don't seem to have enough cameras - at times it's little better than a static camera. Where are all the views from different angles and the up close shots of a bead of sweat falling off a player's nose?

Not only the cameras but there aren't enough televised courts compared to the other grand slams. The USO is behind is so many ways inc. the roof issue.

Reports say the retractable roof on Ashe could be ready by 2016 and a roof on a new Armstrong will be completed in 2018, they dragged their feet for so long!

So Azarenkas match is cancelled
but the Brits and Nadal are still scheduled for night matches on Ashe

Lots of other matches cancelled not sure what this means for Andy tomorrow.

My Canadian telly will show Milos' match now on court 17 regardless of where they stick Fed. Huzzah! Glad they'll be on at the same time.

I bet Fed needed a satnav to find Armstrong Court. Does he know they have more than one court at the USO?

Trob nerves? serving for 2nd set at *5-3, goes *0-30, 15-30, 15-40 and the Fed has 2 break back points. One saved for *30-40, now deuce for Trob.
