Murray had no intention of signing up for two events at the prestigious Rogers Cup but felt he couldn’t turn down a mate in his hour of need.

Fleming was initially hoping to take part with regular partner Jonny Marray only to discover at the 11th hour that their ranking wasn’t high enough to gain entry into a high-quality field.
So with time fast running out to make the registration deadline on Friday, Fleming was scurrying around desperately trying to find Murray in the hope he would agree to team up with him.
The answer was yes and the pair managed to sign in with seconds to spare. Murray said: “It was really quite funny because Colin came rushing on to my practice court about five minutes to two.
“He was in a panic because the registration deadline was in five minutes and he wanted me to play with him.
“Colin knew I would be given an entry because of my high ranking. What could I say?
“I haven’t played much doubles but I thought why not as I don’t think my first singles match will be until Wednesday.”

Glad they got the win but hope this has been a good decision for Andy. The scheduling is dire.
It is an interesting one as Andy seems to have liked "one doubles match" at Masters events to get him into a rhythm, especially if it is played before his first singles match, but does not seem to particularly like playing much more. I think their opponents today are very strong at the moment so the question might be redundant as if they give them a start like yesterday it could be over before they have gelled. Otherwise, this is where the relatively predictable length of a doubles match (two sets give or take a MTB) does help and especially if Andy can win his singles in straights. The problem certainly comes if Andy has a really tough match using up a lot of energy and then should be going into energy conservation mode for the next singles.

How can he (or any other player) do that and then continue with the singles though?
I thought players had to be injured to withdraw from participation but if they're injured then surely they're not fit to play another event at the same tournament. It's always puzzled me and I suspect it annoys the regular doubles players who missed 'the cut' because top singles players wanted to rack up match practice and then end up backing out of the doubles. Especially if, as you've posted, it's 'cos "he wouldn't fancy playing another match straight after" ...

I know that changing the entry rankings for doubles to let players use singles rankings has added some excitement when top singles guys play but I still think it disadvantages some of the doubles players who can't get in.

Precisely - my earlier comment was to highlight the difference in attitude from those who drop out when it suits to the detriment of their partner. More practice here is not necessarily going to be that beneficial - Andy could simply have gone off to Cincy to prepare in those conditions well in advance.

They won! Had a quick look at Colin's profile. Although he has won doubles tournaments, as far as I could see he is one match away from getting to a Master's final for the first time.
Andy has played more doubles matches this week than he has the rest of the year!
Relatively speaking, these must be massive points for Colin!

A great run for Colin/Andy regardless but would be fabulous if they can reach the final! An advantage that they're not facing the Bryans but Nestor/Lindstedt will still be tough and they ended a 25 match winning streak of Bob/Mike.

I did wonder if he has a sneaking feeling that he could have been in Cincy by now getting used to the courts etc, but winning is addictive and the match practice is probably more beneficial
