Dan looked absolutely exhausted and frustrated. He's a fiery character but never seen him so angry with himself. He just couldn't play like he wanted to. He's played so much tennis recently - was impressed he put in a good show against in-form Sascha in Madrid - but he needs a break. I'm not sorry he lost today, better than scraping through and facing Djokovic who would be out to make a point. Rest up a few days Dan!

Dan still has doubles in Rome, partnering Neal Skupski. Better to continue with that and gain match practice and court time perhaps? Gives him time to work with his new coach and maybe some relaxation too.

He's then down to play in Lyon, starting next Monday 17th May. Currently not playing doubles there as it looks as though Neal has entered with brother Ken (if he's fit enough) and Cameron Norrie has teamed up with Jonny O'Mara.

Dan has a week 'off' w/c 24th May (because RollyG moved back a week) and then Roland Garros starting Main Draw play on Sunday 30th.

Berretini served and thumped forehands, otherwise his backhand was cringeworthy and he looked like Bambi on ice. No real court intelligence or finesse. Was looking good for a while but once Diego got break back in the 2nd never really looked back. Unfortunately Evans seeemed to have little left in the decider. oh well still positives to take going forward and some quicker courts too!

Poor Dan, he didn't deserve that bagel. He just wilted deep in the 2nd. Nothing left. The conditions here are so taxing and frustrating. Dan, like Emma, an aggressive, front foot player and not able to impose that kind of game consistently. A shame, but both will move on to more favourable conditions.

Yep, he's showing his colours this year that is for sure.

My worry is Dan.
IMHO his game has fallen apart since starting work with a new coach earlier this year.
Prior to that he was doing very well including that win over Djokovic in spring.
Now, he struggles to make it past R1 or R2; somewhere (mislaid my notes) I jotted
the results down and the way things are going he'll be losing a lot of points soon
(and dropping ranking) if he can't find a way to play better. As he was for several months.
