View Full Version : CINCINNATI, ROUND 3: Andy beats Benny, 6'2, 6'2 and is into the Quarters!

Very good performance from Andy who wasted no time getting into Round 3, just 1hr 10minutes for the match and a first serve percent of 70%!!!
Next up is Julien Benneteau in Round 3.
Murray leads their H2H 3-0 although that does include a retirement by Benny at Monte Carlo in 2012. Otherwise, although Andy won the other 2 encounters the Frenchman too 1 set in each match and has been known to give top players a spot of bother.
Andy says he'll need to play a smart match tomorrow ... and so say all of us!!!
:GBflag:
It'll be played on Thursday 15th August - time tbc.

Their match in 2009 is memorable for this point which probably decided the result of the contest.

Once again Andy gets a change of court whilst the other three stay where they were. They try everything to stop Andy winning. I'll bet he gets most of his games at the Open on Louis Armstrong!

Third match on Grandstand. I wouldn't like to hazard a guess at what time that will be here, except "evening". There is a ladies' match after Andy in the day session, the night session beginning not before midnight UK time.
I would say around about 7 ish...:)

David Ferrer, the #3 seed, has also been sent out to play in the wilds of the outer courts. Seeds #4 and #5 on Center. I suppose their reasoning is that Haas v Fed and Dimitrov v Rafa are a bit more likely to provide an upset.

That's true - but I cant see why Novak's match deserves to be on the main court. That should be a walk in the p ark - Andy v Benneteau should be a much more interesting match .....or am I prejudiced ???
At least Novak is on during the day and not the nice comfy night match
The only positive in the scheduling is that Andy is not playing at night as the temperatures have been unseasonably low. Some of the crowd last night were wrapped up like Arctic explorers although it would be considered tropical here. ;)
I'm thinking that Andy's match might not start till about 8.00pm - allowing 2hrs each for the earlier matches, including warm-ups, interviews etc.
I am deeply tempted to reply to the moaning re scheduling, but I'll refrain
We have a church service at 7.30pm tonight, so I'll probably miss most of the match. Good luck Andy! :swingin:

See the main Cincy thread (where there's comments on the other men and women besides Andy).
Sloane Stephens took the first set 6'3, Jelena Jankovic up a break in the 2nd and serving at *3-2 ... at least an hour to go I reckon.
You can keep track by looking at one of the WTA header pages rather than load the full livescoreboard.

I use tennisform's livescore (http://www.tennisform.com/) and it shows all the matches of the day inc. wta. Great tool. You can see what's finished, what's still to play and what's live and all of them at once.

Goodness me! I just got back from church wondering whether the match would have finished yet and it hasn't even started! Lucky for me I guess :)

From serving at *4-3 in the 3rd set with a chance to consolidate her lead JJ, not for the first time, falters and loses the next 2 games. Now serving at *4-5 to stay in the match!!!
JJ now serving for the match - what's the betting she gets broken?

Benny just seems resigned. I thought Andy's serve was out just now, but Benny didn't bother to challenge.

Perhaps it's something he and Lendl have worked on?
I still think that Andy had issues with walloping his forehand (which was a huge weapon in his armoury) after that awful wrist injury in Hamburg 2007 and I think it affected him for a few years. It's been noticeable that over the last year it's become a strong part of his game again (alongside that awesome backhand he has) and that's been down to Lendl I'm sure.
So, although Andy's first serve was pretty good perhaps they've worked on it and snuck in some extra power, by utilising that serving arm better (knock on effect of a better forehand?) so he can blast his way out of tricky situations?
I'm yet to see any significant change to the 2nd serve which, to my mind (others may have different views) has always been something of a weak point in Andy's game. If he could really achieve a smarter 2nd serve (a la Sampras or Graf) it'd stand him in very good stead.

I think Berdy is more likely to come through that one but if TommyRob gives him a 'much harder match' which goes to 3 sets I probably won't complain ...

A lot of top players pick those 2 (Graf and Sampras) as having had the best 'get out of trouble' 2nd serves and attribute some of their massive success in Slams to it.

Certainly Andy was very soild and looking sharper but not that many winners really and we didn't see Benny anywhere near his best form. However Andy into a groove and sure he'l go up a gear as the tournament progresses.
I wonder if slowing down the first serve is a "managing the back" solution and he can do this in early rounds where he's in control of the match and maybe he's now loosened up after a few more matches.
I remember during Wimbledon, Tim Henman and John McEnroe on separate occasions said Andy's second serve had a huge kick which wasn't obvious from watching but both had practised with him and experienced it. It certainly seem to catch out Benny a few times today. Having said that he does roll it sometimes and open to punishment, as long as it's not on the important points.
