View Full Version : USO 2013, R3. Muzzah marches past Mayer Funky Flo 7'6, 6'2, 6'2

From one Mayer to the next ...

This time though it'll be funky Flo and that promises to be a different match altogether for Andy.
At least he knows a bit more about the German Mayer's game having beaten him already this year.

The H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=MB02) is 2-0 in Andy's favour with both wins coming on clay. Yep, you read that right.
;)

The match is due to be played on Sunday; I'm kinda hoping it'll be 2nd on Ashe.
Fingers cross eh?

Madeline

Definitely fingers crossed. The USO is the hardest one for me to see any of. (That looks very ungrammatical but I'm too tired to change it!)

Really hope this is earlier than last night's match - I'm really struggling today.
Would love to stay up and watch Dan tonight, but I think common sense will have to prevail.

Andy returns to Ashe and is second on after a men's doubles but not before 1pm (6pm UK).

We have just finished our meal. Bryans are now at 5 all in 2nd. Do hope that Andy's match is straightforward today. Good luck Andy!:GBflag:

Sallydaisy
01-09-2013, 16:48
If the Bryans take the 2nd set - as they must be hoping for - then we're in for a 3rd which will delay Andy's match by about 30mins. I hope the B's can achieve their goal of a Grand Slam this year (all 4 titles) even if it does mean waiting a bit longer for Andy. It's a rare opportunity for any player/team so you can't blame them for it taking a bit longer than planned!

Sallydaisy
01-09-2013, 16:52
The Bryans take the 2nd set to level the match at 1-1.
Into a 3rd and that means Andy Murray won't be on court much before 18.30hrs UK time.

JAMES4578
01-09-2013, 16:54
I'm a big of fan of the Bryans and glad they've taken the 2nd 7-5, though they've been under a bit of pressure in this match, coming back from a break down to take the 2nd. Andy'll still be on at a reasonable time for many of us.

The Bryans seem to be cracking through the final set!

Will be here, but might not post much, as I still have trouble with the connection timing out (not a problem anywhere else ), so it takes several hits to get a post up. Not great during a match, and runs the risk of comments appearing far too late to make any sense (if they did make any in the first place!)

Greg said he heard Andy say that he couldn't breathe. It's high humidity but would think he was used to that in Miami...or perhaps not. Know the horrible humidity in NYC but never been to Miami.

traveller7
01-09-2013, 18:36
At the end of the day if he isnt playing his best but still holding serve then thats good, if he is really a bit ill or whatever the less energy he expends the better, just a win will do

Sallydaisy
01-09-2013, 18:36
Andy not looking very comfortable out there but Mayer isn't capitalising on it at the moment.
Andy's first serve is all over the place!!! I think if he can get that working OK he'll settle down.
It's his first daytime match on Ashe so maybe he's adjusting to the conditions there?
+ the humidity probably isn't helping.

Neil Harman ‏@NeilHarmanTimes (https://twitter.com/NeilHarmanTimes) 1m (https://twitter.com/NeilHarmanTimes/status/374240761539096576) Murray takes the first set tie-break. Playing Mayer so tricky, you get nothing to feed from

Mike Dickson ‏@Mike_Dickson_DM (https://twitter.com/Mike_Dickson_DM) 2m (https://twitter.com/Mike_Dickson_DM/status/374240858872504323)

Murray looked a bit tight and tired in that 1st set v skilfull Mayer but superior mental toughness shows, takes tiebreak 7-2.

the 'mid-tournament' jitters for Andy now tend to mean a dodgy set rather than the old 2 sets and a break down that we used to have to put up with, (Verdasco excepted) He's looking a lot better now since the breaker, not sure what was up in the 1st set, he just didn't look right

If Smyczek beats Granollers then it's almost certain Djokovic (assuming he beats Sousa) and Smyczek would be the night match. It's whether Andy versus a seeded Seppi instead of unseeded Istomin carries more weight than Djokovic and Granollers.

Having said all that Wawrinka against Berdych might top them all.

If there's an American in action (and Smyczek is the last one standing!) I think he'll get the night match (and probably against Nole unless Sousa produces the shock of the tournament) so Andy would probably get the same slot as today or even 3rd on Ashe.

Istomin leading 2-1 in the fifth on-serve but he looks on the verge of collapse at the changeover speaking to the doctor. He does however look fresher than Andy when he gets back on court. ;)

And just to prove how exhausted Istomin is, he gets the break after playing a backhand flat on his back.

Sallydaisy

The crowd are quite raucous for this Istomin v Seppi encounter ... and I thought Denis had called the trainer to deal with a bout of yellowitis (tshirt, headband and sunglasses all in luminous yellow!). He's now 4-1 up and trying to break Seppi's serve again.

JAMES4578

Was quite worried about Andy today but it seems the humidity got to him. It is very humid in Miami as well SG, so it was a little surprising to me that it affected him so much. Having said that I don't know how anyone can walk in it let alone play tennis. :fanning:

Djokovic looked tired at the end of his demolition of João Sousa after little more than 1 1/2 hours just from the effort of winning eighteen games/three sets even without much opposition, so I really think it was the conditions on the day.
The most important thing was he came through in straight sets and only one of them draining. As we know from the past, the more energy he can save now, the better later on.

Its very humid here in London today stifling so I only imagine how hard it must have been to play in that type of conditions.
In one article they pointed out that in days gone by Andy would of perhaps lost a set and lost a break in 2nd set and worried us all whereas in retrospect Mayer didnt get a handle on Murrays serve in the 1st set despite the fact that Andy wasnt chasing as many balls down and completely exhausted! True champ :)

Well done Andy, nice straight sets win.

Sounds like the conditions were horrible. I read a report that someone asked him about the humidity and the fact he trains in Miami to get used to those conditions (subtext being I suppose, why was he therefore finding it so tough?) But Andy's answer was that its 3 weeks since his Miami training - and yes, the conditions there help him with the heat and humidity but only if you are going from those conditions in one location and they are the same constantly in the next. The problem with NY at this time of year is that it can be horribly humid one day, then the next it will be cool and blustery so the conditions are inconsistent and therefore harder to deal with.

But all the players have to deal with the same issues, and its great that despite that Andy managed to play some beautiful champion-like shots.

Bring on week 2!

I thought Andy played really well in the 2nd and 3rd sets. He is definately used to the humidity in Miami but he hasn't been in that humidity for a few weeks so it still must hit you. Must be incredibly draining.

Sorry I don't get to post much on here at the moment especially during matches. We haven't had any wi-fi now since April while our house is being renovated. We only have a dongle for the computer and I can't watch the TV and be on the computer. Usually end up on twitter as I can use my phone for that. Roll on getting back in the house!!

Adding to the humidity was a considerable wind at times, swirling around the court. And warm winds in humidity are not refreshing, they're a real pain.
~So - all things considered Andy did a great job. Having dealt with a late start, Armstrong Court and those conditions - I don't think there's much more can be thrown at him
......................other than Rafa, of course

Andy and Nole both suffered in the humid conditions.

But if you lose the advantage of practising in hot, humid conditions after only 3 weeks, I wonder what is the point of doing it at all?

It does seem a tad counter productive but I think the air has just been so heavy as the rain and thunderstorms have been building. I get a heavy fuzzy head when a thunderstorm is brewing it makes the air so thick and dense.
