After back-to-back Mayers Muzzah will next play Uzbekistani player Denis Istomin who came through a 5-setter over 20th seed Andreas Seppi.

Andy leads their H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=I165) by 1-0 having beaten Denis in the QF of Brisbane 2013.

He'll provide another good test for Andy but may well run out of steam after that battle tonight.
Andy will have to up his game but we might still find he's conserving energy ahead of some bigger matches to come.

The match will be on Tuesday 3rd September, time tbc but hopefully on Ashe!!!
Betting is that if Smyczek (USA) makes it to R4 his match v Nole would be at night.

Just spotted that via a Neil Harman tweet ... if so it's not good news for those of us in the UK.
Depends what is on first at 7pm (midnight UK) but that'd probably be an 02.00 time for us to watch Andy.

Neil Harman ‏@NeilHarmanTimes (https://twitter.com/NeilHarmanTimes) 3m (https://twitter.com/NeilHarmanTimes/status/374652003395198978) Looks like it's going to be a long day/night tomorrow - the gossip is Murray v. Istomin will be second at night on Ashe

At last - a prime time match for Andy !

Now I'm in a dilemma - off to South America for 3 weeks tomorrow so this will be my last chance to see Andy - not sure just how much I'll be able to keep in touch travelling through. Not really a good idea to stay up as we're off a 5 in the morning - ah well, I can sleep on the plane.

The good vibes are that I was on a plane back from Spain when Andy won the final last year so I missed that one live. Perhaps I should stay well away from any Televisions.

GOOD LUCK ANDY - ALL THE WAY

Another all nighter for us in the UK then! I have a cunning plan.... I am going to try and get some sleep, set the alarm for 2am, try to follow the match then hopefully get another couple of hours before getting up for work. But part 2 of my plan is to work from home tomorrow - I save an hour of commuting, plus it won't matter if I look like death or want a nap at lunchtime :) Now all I have to do is manage to stay awake from 2.00.........

Good luck Andy - make it worth the effort that we will all be going to!

Have chickened out and decided to set this to record from 1.30 am to be on the safe side. Serena may drill through her opponent in no time and I don't want to miss the beginning. Benefit of being newly retired, I can watch it first thing in the morning when Mr P has safely gone out the door to work! :red devil:

Well, it is CSN's birthday today, after all. Handy tournament earnings, plus a couple of bagels generously handed out to her by SW make for decent presents.

Plus, an earlier start for Andy v Istomin. What's not to like here?

btw Serena the first player to win a USO QF ladies singles match 6-0 6-0 since Martina Nav in '89 (credit to the bbc site for this factoid).

Why does Andy insist on receiving :confused:I think the logic is to try and catch his opponent cold and snaffle an early break, also to protect himself from the same fate, would like to see the stats on whether this tactic pays or not though.

4-3* Andy in front, let's get a mini-break!
5-3* And there it is!
*5-4 Two serves for the set.

5-6* Set point for Istomin. Sloppy.

I am sorry, but what an idiot! Even if he comes through - and frankly maybe this is punishment for a lot of talk on this forum of QFs before Andy had played this match - he needs all the energy he can get!
Focus. Try and play a bit more forcefully - if the wind is bad, revert back - but what is happening is your game is levelling down to his and you are not focusing enough to come out automatically on top.
C'mon Andy!

Well, he still made a bit of a meal of that set but came through it 6'4 and it's looking likely he'll make it to the Quarter-Final.

There's good and bad about that prospect - he'll be relieved that it ISN'T Berdych but he'll have to play one of his 'friends' on the tour Stan the Man who is now flying the flag for Switzerland and playing very solid tennis. AND Stan is the last player to have beaten Andy before the SF stage at a USO ...

Yes, but after I went to full screen and got a new screen for Vube (which I quickly deleted) it then came back OK.
I think they set it up so you can't watch continuously but end up having to allow another link to an advert before it'll let you back in. At first attempt I got WillHill, then vube and now it's alright.

Apparently there were some really drunk people on Armstrong - perhaps they've made their way over? Not worrying anyway - New York, as with most capitals, is an international city so there's bound to be fans of all players in the crowd.

Didn't always go to plan but Istomin was a times a tough opponent and Andy found the form when it mattered. Certainly some entertaining points!

Of course Andy needs to step it up but sure he can go up a few gears in the quarters. Stan can be a tricky customer but maybe an advantage it's not Berdy.

Sounds like a good match, but that Andy needs to do what Rafa and Novak are doing and not let his opponents in at all, and conserve his energy for the last rounds. Still, he's gotten there which is the main thing.

I went to bed 'early' to wake up for the match, but slept straight though :( Ah well, I just hope I manage it on Thursday.

Congrats Andy, bit of a battle but got the result. Anyone else feeling a little concerned that Andy has seemed a bit out of sorts in R3 and R4? Maybe its just me. And I'm feeling a tad nervous because assuming he can get past Stan The Man, Nole and Rafa are looking imperious. Hopefully its just my imagination - I haven't actually seen Andy's matches (I refuse to have Sky....) so its tricky when you are relying on highlights/newspaper reports. And we #alwaysbelieve in our champ, no matter what.

In case you are wondering, part 1 of my cunning plan did not quite work out - I sort of woke up at 2, put the radio on, fell asleep, woke up to find Istomin had won the first set. Tried to stay awake but just couldn't manage. Fail. Bonus is that part 2 is working out great - sitting on sofa, with laptop and coffee, ready to work (just as soon as I've finished on here of course) :)

I actually treated myself to Sky Sports as I am retired, I Sky+ the match and have just watched it, and yes Jan I think Andy doesn't look "quite right"he looks out of sorts and it worries me, he was at odds with himself as well.It slightly worries me that Novak won his match so easily to be fair I can't see Andy beating Novak if indeed he beats Stan in thequarters.

Not one of his best matches but got the win. Shot of the match sky high lob (miss hit) which dropped in, Andy won the point!! Lots of grumbling from Andy and some bad line calls for both, always seems to be more call errors in US Open. I believe Andy will pull himself together to defend his title.

All plans to get a good sleep before the match went out the window as I couldn't sleep properly, thinking about getting up at 2!! Got back to bed at 5 though and managed about 3 and half hours sleep before a late start at work. Feel fine at the moment but won't be staying up tonight (sorry Rafa). Will definately watch on Thursday though whatever the time. Am off work next week so can catch up on my sleep then!

Oh and well done in the end Andy!!

For starters I'm nervous about him getting past Stan..........and I agree that Nole & Rafa are looking the business. I do wonder however, how much the whole new experience of being the defending champ may be affecting our boy. After all it's going to be a learning curve, whatever the outcome.

Went to sleep, woke up @ 3am. too tired to get up but listened to commentary on 5Live, very disappointing with the American commies but got the jest of it. I would not worry about Andy's performance, they say it was very windy. So fingers crossed that Andy has an early start tomorrow.
Good luck Andy.
