Andy v Stan ... in the Quarter-Final of the USO.

Anyone who thought Berdych would be tough should not think this'll be easy for Muzzah.
Far from it ...

Wawrinka has had a good year and moved to #10 in the rankings AND he beat Andy at the same stage of the USO in 2010. As Andy said, in his oncourt interview, things have moved on for them both since then but he acknowledged that he had a very tough match ahead of him on Thursday.

Stats wise Andy leads the H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=W367) 8-5 but Stan has a win already over Andy this year, at the R16 in Monte Carlo on clay. In fact 3 of Stan's 5 wins have come on clay leaving hard success to a 2006 R128 win at Miami and that 2010 match.

The Swiss player has plenty in his locker to trouble Andy; and our man knows it. So, with a bit of luck he'll prepare well and play a lot better than he did today against Denis the Menace!
Otherwise it'll be Stan the Man in the Semi's - and that would be a huge blow to Muzzah.

Here's hoping Andy can come through!!!
:GBflag:

The match is scheduled for Thursday - time to be confirmed.

I wonder whether Andy v Stan will be the night match tomorrow. There seems to be little logic to the court scheduling decisions at the US Open! Do they take into account the fact that Nole played the afternoon session yesterday and would therefore put himon at night, or would they like us, think that Andy v Stan would be more of a pull for the night session? Who knows what they will think or do!!!

I see that Ferrer the world no 4, has finally got his match on Ashe today, about time!

As someone mentioned last night about Andy's match, finally the night Ashe crowd got a competitive match. They might schedule Andy and Stan because of that.
I think we will know better how Andy really is when we see him in the next match. Andy has not been firing on all cylinders (I wonder if he is carrying an injury to be honest) but now he has to. This is Stan playing very well. A Tricky Stan. No point in looking beyond this match until it is over. Time for the GS champion in Andy to turn up!

Yes, David - Stan will be tricky for sure. We definitely have to just focus on this match and try not to get too carried away with ourselves. Time for Andy to show his Grand Slam holder credentials though! I am concerned that he's seemed out of sorts but then in his pressers he's not seemed at all worried. The back clutching (and other body part clutching) seems to have crept back - either the back is troubling him again, which is a big worry, or the old Andy has re-surfaced for a couple of matches - bit of a worry, but maybe less than a physical injury! For sure though, he will be up for this and Mr Lendl and co will have him well prepared. And a night match with a storming atmosphere might just be what he needs. Let's hope so.

I have a strange feeling that we are gonna see a different Andy on court vs Stan :jitterbug:

Hes seemed so calm and collected in his post match pressies , cant see it being an injury . I think hes just played to where he needed to do to win, and now hes gonna step it up . Hes gonna have to vs Stan.

Unfortunately I won't be able to see it as I am going to my mother's who doesn't have Sky. I too am hoping we see the Grand Slam Champion turn up tomorrow and, sure he cannot be too injured, otherwise why would he commit to playing in the Davis Cup at the end of next week. Not sure what is worse looking at scores or watching the match!

Lots of empty seats and the crowd seemed dead until the third set when they were definitely in Istomin's corner.

Tension always aggravates niggles (as we all know) and Andy is bound to be tense at this stage of the tournie. It's so hard to tell with him and looking back to a year ago I can't remember whether he did the clutching thing or not? He had some tough matches but somehow came through, stamina intact.

Whilst I sincerely hope that Stan has reached the summit as far as ranking points from this years US Open, am I right in saying that winning the tournament (yes I know that means beating 3,1 and 2 in successive matches) would put him within 100 points of Swiss No.1?

Excellent - that's 18.30 here in the UK!

Also, with a bit of luck the crowd will have been livened up by the first match (and the stands full ...) + it's after mid-day so Andy will be awake!

Great time for UK fans and European fans. Would be perfect for me except I am having mani and pedi at 6 pm. Will be in the kitchen so will be listening but don't want to seem rude to my lovely manicurist and ignore her. Still won't be jumping around for the first couple of sets:) but it's not ideal. Went to bed at 5 am and was up at 10. Did fall asleep in chair before Gasquet & Ferrer's match. Think I snoozed for about 40 minutes.

It riles me that everyone seems to have written Andy off - even in his match today against Wawrinka! OK, Nadal and Djokovic are playing brilliantly but I do hope Andy will raise his game - as we know he can - and show these doubters that he can still go all the
way! Don't get mad, get even! I am feeling very nervous but will have everything crossed that he makes it to the semis.

The more I think about it (probably far too much!) the more I realise just how difficult it must be for Andy this year defending the US after winning Wimbledon. So little time in between the two Slams to get his head and body in the right place. Admittedly he hasn't played his best but he's got to the quarters using one of his major assets - sheer grit and determination. I hope that will get him through this one too but we all know not to underestimate Stan.

It has been reported that the courts at the US Open have been made faster so it is like playing on a clay court (some people suggesting to suit Rafa) so that would mean Andy might find some discomfort in his back, perhaps that is the underlying factor of him not bringing his A game to the USO.

Very very nervous about this one. Hope Andy brings his A game out tonight. He's played fine so far IMHO and done just enough without peaking too soon. But for anyone who is relieved it's not Berdy.........I'd say there's nothing to choose between him and Stan as potential obstacles to Andy's progress.

Those who are saying Nole and Rafa are playing brilliantly my question is, who have they played, Nole's last opponent was a dead donkey, and anytime Rafa plays a fellow countryman he beats them hollow. I have a very strong feeling that Andy will beat Stan in 3 or 4 sets.

I agree to an extent but there again, I couldn't see Istomin taking a set of either of them either. Andy will need to up his game today.

I still feel pretty calm as I have done all week watching Andy. In his presser he said conditions were colder and he was a bit stiff. He also knows he has to up his game now in the qfs and he lost serve 4 times only in 4 sets before that he had only been broken once against Mayer so I dont think he is doing too badly. Positivity ladies and gents, positivity! He is a champ and I am certain that he will show that later on.

I agree that Stan has natural ability to match Berdy, but doesn't turn it on as often so Andy's chances improve, not that Stan or Thomas can match Andy if he's on his game, anI know he's played 5 setters in the past but Stan always looks a little bit out of shape to me (compared to the other guys) so Andy's tendancy tomake somebody run a lot should work in his favour in the afternoon heat. So you can put the cauldrons away for this one haha, this is Andy's

I do wonder if these Grand Slam tournaments resort to such things to enable top players/TV favourites/home players to do well. They can't can they?....it wouldn't be fair would it? It would be tantamount to you know what. No, forget it. It's an even playing field or hard court. I'll banish that thought from my mind.:banghead::getcoat:

Wawrinka was the best player in that set, his tennis has just got more purpose about it. The aggressor on the majority of occasions, making things happen. Andy will need to step it up a level or two in terms of being more aggressive.

Yip - Andy is being far too passive. I don't like it when he plays that loopy forehand.

Stan has the weapons - he can hit brutal winners - but he's a nervous player.

Andy needs to play with the controlled aggression that he normally reserves for Nole here, I think.

He is often a poor starter afternoon matches, though - can only get better.

Hmm.

I think that Andy is feeling some pressure of being defending champion at a slam and the extra exposure it brings.

Stan has upped his level. Hitting some fabulous winners off both wings. He was making uncharacteristically confident comments prior to this match - and I think has impetus from the Berdych match.

Can Andy turn this around? Of course he can. He has resilience, and can fight when his back is against the wall.

Also worth noting that Stan took Novak to 5 sets at the Australian Open - and got a lot of confidence from that, apparently.

I'm pretty certain that Novak would also have had his hands full playing Stan in the form he is in today. It's as much of Stan playing well today as Andy being sub par. Today, Stan has had no right to hit winners from some of the positions he's been in.

I don't care that he lost. He's done so much over the past twelve months: olympic gold and silver, US Open and Wimbledon. He gives it his best and if that isn't enough he goes away trains and comes back even better, stronger, harder to beat. Today the King may have lost one of his crowns but there are plenty more he'll be able to compete for and no doubt claim as his own.

Agreed.

Stan's first first semi final.

I really hope that Stan can beat Novak in the semi (assuming he beats Youzhny).

I think it's hard to win a slam, but especially with the competition around, it's even harder to defend one. That's important for Andy to bear in mind. Plenty of other US Opens for him to win - and other slams too, of course.

Kudos to Stan, he had a game plan, played aggressively and knew HOW to beat Andy today.

Andy didn't seem right from the off but, as ever, I for one hoped he could produce his special brand of genius tennis when he needed it. He couldn't so it makes me wonder what might or might not have been bothering him.

He's made the QF but he's not only lost it but a shedload of points too.

An injury? Illness? Bad day at the office? We may never know.
Disappointing to see Andy play like that. If we're disappointed, just think how he must feel.

But let's not forget that our man is Wimbledon champion - and I'd rather that than another US Open title if I'm honest.

The disappointment we feel is nothing to what Andy must be experiencing. Well played to Wawrinka who never let up. Maybe if Andy had held the 10th game in the first set.....Andy seems to have left it all at Wimbledon and it's going to take time to recover.

Andy already in his press conference. Playing it with a straight bat. "an achievement to make QF"....."and I've had a good run in grand slams".

Credit to Stan who played very, very well. Disappointed for Andy but not as much as I would have been before Wimbly.

So all those who were saying he would lose this match were right - did they know something I didn't?? I do know something was not quite right with Andy tonight, nothing worked for him, no enthusiasm. He shouldn't be losing in straight sets like that so perhaps he has got an injury. Whatever it is I wish him well.

Such a shame when we know he can play so much better. Hope he can bounce back quickly. I suppose being a real fan means you take the rough with the smooth and let's face it there has been a lot of smooth lately. He knows he will always have our love and support.

Very sad and disappointed though Stan did play well. All through the USO Andy has seemed lacklustre so maybe there is a problem he's not let on about?????????

Onwards to the ATP finals -m after Asia that is

I think it's a touch of burnout post Wimbley - maybe we expected too much. Andy kept saying he had no idea how he would feel defending a major post-Wimbledon and now he's finding out. Another learning curve along the way.

Someone on twitter has offered up a novel reason for Andy's loss tonight to Stan.
;)

BadToss ‏@BadToss (https://twitter.com/BadToss) 39m (https://twitter.com/BadToss/status/375717292614508544) Murray has reckoned that the only way he can **** off Fed now is by letting Stan take the number one Swiss spot.

Certainly a disappointing performance from Andy but there's been a few highs lately and we must put into perspective. Sure not the way Muzzah wanted to lose his crown but sure there will be special moments in the future!Possibly there has been issue with Andy's back post Wimbledon, though of a course a few factors in the outcome tonight and he won't take any credit away from Stan.

He lost a match, nobody died and he'll be back. He can't win every GS every blooming time. He is still my champion and I hope he enjoys playing in the DC with his friends. Andy fan for ever.:GBflag:

I'm soooooo gutted, although I guess that in my heart of hearts I thought it was a long shot to win, I expected him to go at least another round and be beaten by one of the 'big four'. I really didn't expect him to go out to Warinka.

Not the happy birthday I was hopoing for :(

This is the story and it matters not that other players have not been affected in the same way after a big win. Winning Wimbledon was Andy's lifelong dream.

Andy Murray admitted that after the enormity of winning Wimbledon for him, it was hard to fire himself back up and train at "110%."

Feel sure there was some problem. Not even a break point ? That's not our Andy, no matter how well Stan played.
Feel really sad but.....at least he has time to get to Croatia and prepare

It took him a few weeks to get his head round winning Wimby so I guess its all understandable. I am disappointed for him as I am sure he would of rather played a little better but then maybe now is the best way to go out rather than against Nole or Nadal who knows.

Agree with that Supergran and Andy does too I think. Looking at tweets from Ben Rothenberg Andy said in his presser "I don't know if I'm meant to win every Grans Slam that I play" and he admitted that after the enormity of winning Wimbledon for him, it was hard to fire himself back up and train an 110%.

Nole, Rafa, Fed and Delpo have never had the same pressure that Andy has had and for for such a long time so I for one will never be slagging Andy off when he loses. I am so thankful that we have him and he has given us a fantastic year. I believe he will come back so strong for the Aussie Open and maybe he just needed to get this one out the way as defending champ. Chalk it up to experience and move on. Greg was saying that Stan played better tonight than in the match he played against Nole in the Aussie Open this year and that was incredible so if Nole wins tonight he had better be on his AAA game. I am now rooting for Stan or Nole to win. Anybody but Rafa as just not buying his supposedly career ending knee problems.......When something seems too good to be true it usually is.

Quite right supergran. Andy lost a quarterfinal match to a player who was playing one of those dream matches when everything went right for him. We cannot expect Andy to win every match and every title he competes for. Andy was having one of those nightmare matches when everything went wrong for him. I'm sure he will bounce back from what must have been a very difficult match for him. It was always going to be difficult for him so soon after all the Wimbledon excitement to successfully defend his USO title.

Certainly he is still our champion and I hope he has a fun time in Croatia with a victory for our boys.

He'll be back for the indoor season I'm sure firing on all cylinders. I hope there is no problem for Andy and that he's OK.

Onwards and upwards Andy. :swingin: :unclesam: :GBflag: :grouphug:

Shame for @andy_murray but defeat is a reminder that winning 1 slam, let alone two, is an incredibly difficult thing to do. #JustSaying

Stan was in 'the zone' tonight - everything went his way and nothing went Andy's. Well done to Stan. If Andy had to lose, I'm so glad that it was Stan that Andy lost to and not Berdych - I would have found that much more difficult to stomach and I think perhaps Andy would have done too.

I remember discussions we were having at the beginning of the year about what our hopes were for Andy in 2013. Myself & others talked about how we felt the no 1 ranking wasn't of high importance but that we just wanted another slam for Andy this year. Well he did that, he went & won the biggest & the best one of them all! I am still riding high from that win & could do for the rest of the year. I think that win was utterly colossal.

Yes this loss is disappointing but Andy will bounce back.

Love you Andy!

Stan has also caught the imagination of the Swiss public - this Swiss comic strip (translated into English) made me laugh!!

btw - Stan trails only Nole and Rafa this season in terms of top 10 wins (he has 7, I think). That just shows how dangerous an opponent he was today for Andy.

I did not see the match as I was working. It is not unexpected as the real Andy has not really been "there" at Flushing Meadows this year. There was the possibility that he would step up but there was also the reality he might not..
I am so, so glad this did not happen against Berdych because at least this does not undermine last year's performance. If Birdy had beaten him, it would have allowed him snide remarks like "see what happens when I get to play him without a strong wind" which would have run the risk of belittling last year's performance. Small mercies...

This is the story and it matters not that other players have not been affected in the same way after a big win. Winning Wimbledon was Andy's lifelong dream.

Other players have though, Nadal was the heavy favourite going into Wimbledon but failed to flatter after his RG exploits. Winning 2 slams in a row & defending slams in this era is exceptionally difficult. Furthermore Andy missed RG it was a monumental effort to ready himself for Wimbledon let alone win it. People who give Andy a hard time for his US Open exit really ought to get their craniums checked. It's testament to Andy and the work he puts in that people are so mind-boggled about him failing to reach a grand slam Semi.

Hard luck Andy. A pretty rough day at the office but Stan had an AMAZING match! Well done to him! Andy hasn't been on top form this USO. Post Wimbledon win hangover I guess. Perhaps I should be more gutted but I am not. He still has had the most amazng year! He will be back stronger than ever am sure! And still proud of him!

I guess the fact we had to endure so many murraycoasters, so many near misses before his first GS win and then the highs of USO, Wimbly and Olympics wins, losses like this one are not as hard to bear
