View Full Version : DAVIS CUP 2014, 31/1-2/2. World Group R1 tie: Great Britain v USA away

Yes, it's early but the Round 1 World Group ties are played in the week immediately after the Australian Open and they're only 16 weeks away! Not long at all ...
There are still some ties to be decided this weekend and the updated Davis Cup rankings aren't out until tomorrow so new seedings not available until then. Great Britain is not likely to be seeded so we'll be drawn against a seeded team.
8 of the following countries will be seeded (Kazakhstan probably won't make it) and based on our history with them the away/home/by lot options are given.
CZE, ARG, FRA (home)
SRB, USA, ITA, ESP (away)
CAN, KAZ (lot)
None of them would be easy ...

Andy has committed to being there ... if healthy!

Would be great - for me - for Canada and GB in Canada.
Dreadful weekend for me! :crying: I am at a conference in Dublin which doesn't finish till the Friday! Every other year it has been the week before as I usually end up watching the AO semis in the bar
if it's a home tie I will leave early and maybe miss the first match but still go. If it's away, I can't see me being able to get there :crying: Although I could fly straight from Dublin ..... depending where it is. Can't bear the thought of missing another tie, DC junkie that I am! This weekend has nearly killed me, not being there!
Confirmation of the seeds, now that the new rankings are out:
1 CZE, 4 ARG, 5 FRA (in GB)
2 SRB, 3 ESP, 6 USA (away)
7 CAN, 8 KAZ (by lot)
Kazakhstan did keep Italy out of 8th place after all (though I'm glad I hedged my bets by listing all 9 - it was quite close!), so that means a 50% chance of a home tie and even KAZ away would probably be preferable to ITA away from the point of view of getting a win, even if it might not be such a nice trip for travelling fans ...
Meanwhile, GB have jumped 12 places to 18th! That is higher than last time we made this stage (when we got to 20th), thus probably the highest for a decade and maybe even since the Davis Cup rankings began in 2001, but I don't have records going back before 2005.
Would be great - for me - for Canada and GB in Canada.
Would be pretty darn awesome! Although, a hard one for you when deciding who to cheer!
Although my preference would be France in Court 1 at Wimby! :swingin:

In February??! I don't think so somehow. We need to get back to the heady days of the NIA in Birmingham where so many of the home ties were held in the early noughties. It was such a great arena for tennis and close to loads of places to eat and drink! Living quite close to Birmingham though, I wouldn't want all the ties there as I love to get away for the weekend. The Feb one would suit me down to the ground though ;)
Maybe we should look to get one of the away ties out of the way so we have more chance for a home quarter final, semi-final and final - or is that looking a little too far ahead ;)

It would ..... but I REALLY need a home tie otherwise I may not be able to go at all given that I am in Dublin on the Friday
I won a competition run by Davis Cup twitter (wonder if many others even attended or they just gave the prize to all who entered lol). The prize is to attend the Davis Cup draw in London tomorrow which is kind of cool. Will be a great experience! Not sure I will recognise people there but to have the chance to witness it first hand will be great! Hoping I can bring Team GB some luck! No Serbia or Spain please!
Is the draw tomorrow? Anyone know what time? I really hope we don't draw Spain :sofa:
The 2014 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas draw is taking place in London on Wednesday 18 September at 11:00 local time (10:00 GMT).

10.00 GMT is local time - it's in London!! So is that 10.00 or 11.00??
Either way I'm on tenter hooks :nailbiter: Please, please, PLEASE let it be a home tie.
I was thinking it was 10 o'clock but of course it's 11. They have a countdown on screen at the moment currently showing 39 minutes to go (although by my watch there's 49 minutes to go so they must be starting at 10.50).
I'm at work so can't watch the draw live. Will back on here at lunchtime to check who we've got :nailbiter::nailbiter:

No, 10am GMT is 11am BST - which we are still on, despite the change in the weather!
Oh no, it's Bouncy!

I suppose they will get round to the World Group last - probably in about 4 hours time judging by the length of the speeches.

It looks like the better half of the draw if we can get past the Bryans.
I really hope that GB can beat USA - it's quite possible - then we'd be at home to either France or Argentina.
Edit - on checking on the DC website, it seems it's Italy or Argentina. http://www.daviscup.com/en/draws-results/world-group.aspx
Much speculation on Twitter that USA will choose to play on clay!
USA away, oooohhh. My first thought was - very winnable. But I'd forgotten of course about the Bryans. :shamed: And Isner. But apart from that.... Still think its winnable, even if they do put it on clay - look how well our guys did on the dirt in Umag. Downside is its out of the budget to consider going along to cheer the guys  But how exciting, the original Davis Cup teams up against each other. Especially if Andy does well at the Aussie Open and could go along as newly crowned champion :cauldron:

Not the toughest assignment but certainly a challenge playing the States away, though if Andy plays one we would be up but likely expensive for folk considering travelling and could be tough for a short trip unless stay extended.

The boys had a close match against the Bryans at US so its doable.
would love to go

So who is starting to look too far ahead now?
Oh well, that decides it then, I definately won't be able to go. Quite relieved in a way as I won't have to struggle with trying to get somewhere from Dublin then home again afterwards. Finances should also be a bit stronger by the next round or WGPO if (heaven forbid) we lost this match.
Definately winnable though, just a shame for the team that it's not at home. I was at the last GB v USA tie at home in Birmingham in 1999 .... and I have been at EVERY home tie since then. Not a bad record!
Off to get a lottery ticket!

Oooh. Now that would be an amazing trip!!!

Yeah, though brilliant match up and test for our dubs team! Fantastic! I wonder if Ross will be back playing by then (I haven't heard about his progress since it was announced he was on the mend)
Much speculation on Twitter that USA will choose to play on clay!
It is likely they will choose clay knowing that the clay is the weakest surface for the GB team and clay isn't too bad for them. Although a hard court clash in the states would be epic in teams of the tennis produced!

Every year I go on about how much better for Andy it would be to play post-AO matches on the US swing, and train in Miami and get ready for IW and Miami Masters.
A January Davis Cup tie just seems to strengthen the argument.
I wonder if the players would want clay, though. It might mess up the US players February US hard court tournaments as well...
So now we await details of venue and surface - when might that be decided? Too far away for Brits travelling though there will always be a fair number of supporters for our lads in most parts of the US. Certainly not the percentage of support there was in Croatia however (thanks those who were there at the weekend!).
Big advantage having home ties but how many of the probable US team would really favour clay?

If it was hard court in New York I would be very up for going as never been!

You must have a lower case letter in a post - its the way VB works. So if you had gone "Its USA" the USA would have remained in capitals.

Definitely winnable if Andy plays. As far as clay is concerned, whilst Isner and the Bryans may be happy on it, I very much doubt it would be Querrey's first choice!
Like Caro I was at the Davis Cup tie at the NIA in 1999. It was my first experience of Davis Cup and I loved every minute of it. Cannot claim to have been at every home tie since but I went to nearly all the ties in Birmingham. Not a great flyer so Glasgow wasn't an option. I was so hoping it would be a home tie and be at the NIA in Birmingham again.

That tie was what really got me into Davis Cup and is still one of the best ties I have been to - eclipsed probably only by the win in Coventry this year v Russia from 0-2 down.

In the usa?Very droll..You do make me laugh.:laugh:
Fearing it may be clay though initially thought it wouldn't be
But the change in surface from hard court to clay would be tough for both teams no?
True. It was only some people's speculation on Twitter. We'll have to wait and see.

Especially going AO January hard... one off clay tie... February hard in the US.
US Players understandably like to do well in US tournaments and their chances are mainly the February and March tourneys including the two Masters and the tournaments including the two North American Masters leading up to the US Open. Nearly all of those are on hard. And those February tournaments normally get far fewer top twenty players (the attractions of Dubai being one of the reasons and the European circuit at that time).
At the very least if I were the Davis Cup captain I would sound my players out about playing on the devil dirt. I am not sure it is such a good advantage. Frankly it might turn out to be a blessing getting the USA as their players might be averse to playing clay.

Can't imagine the US guys will choose clay - none of them are clay specialists. The only reason would be to nullify Andy but I reckon their preference will be a really fast court.
A tough one but Andy likes the US...and it could be worse

All things considered, the only reason Andy would not want to play Davis Cup is if the inconvenience prejudiced a major tournament and he is not a great traveller. But USA end January is just about perfect especially if he trains and plays in February there.
Yes I agree with David. Although I think Andy is pretty committed to DC having seen the guys produce what they have in the last couple of years. So he should be IMO but then I am biased by my love of DC!
We could have done a lot, lot worse than USA. The main worry is the Bryans but Colin and Ross (if Ross is back playing by then) have beaten them before and they can do it again.

We wont find out til November
This may not be relevant, but worth remembering
Re: HOUSTON *DOUBLES*, 8-14 April 2013. Main thread - info and draw
Congratulations to Jamie and John - they beat the Bryans - 1-6, 7-6. 12-10
I think one of my biggest concern is whether we will get to watch, or whether US TV will price it out of the UK's budget.

In a way it is fitting. If your doubles opponents are the Bryans, then you cannot just rely on Andy to single-handedly win the tie. It becomes a team effort!

I was seriously thinking about going, but it looks as though when Hubby has finished chemo they might operate, which would be Dec/Jan time, he wouldn't wanted to have accompanied me though, just as well as I think insurance for the USA will be out of the question, but I would have come on my own, I am sure somebody from the Forum would have befriended me,so it will all depend on what happens in the next few months with Hubby?????

I will go if the costs are not prohibitive. I had a great time in Croatia and want to do it again! Wonder of they will make somewhere on the west coast so it takes longer to get to for folks us living in Britain and so might put a lot of people off.

Certainly it was fabulous in Umag on all fronts! A tie in the U.S. should also be a great experience if a few can make it over, though have a feeling it may be more problematic.
