Just read on the Bangkok Site that Andy has withdrawn from the tournament as he is going to undergo a surgical procedure this week. Hopefully this will sort out his back and he can get to playing with less discomfort.

Alis
19-09-2013, 15:44
I read that too Mickey. Let's hope that the surgery is a success and that Andy can play unhindered for the rest of his career. It might also stop some of his detractors claiming that there has never been anything wrong with his back - Ms Wade for instance!

The Bangkok website is saying that Andy has withdrawn because he is to undergo a 'surgical procedure'. I suppose, depending on what it is, he could be out for the rest of the season.

Problem is if it is a back operation, would he miss rest of season including the world tour finals less than 2 months away?

Did he play in DC through pain? Hope is not too serious and he's back soon! I guess we'll find out soon according to Thailand open more info

Mickey

he could have keyhole surgery and be able to get back to training in a short time, about 10 days or so. He is fit and well and has a great team around him.

Neil Harman just tweeted that Andy's out of all the Asian tournies and quite possibly won't be back till 2014.

Mike Dickson of the Daily Mail saying it's "minor" back surgery but can any operation on the back be considered minor? Back injuries are so difficult to recover from. A long road ahead.

According to twitter Andy having surgery on his back and could be out for rest of season. We'll just have to wait for confirmation. Good luck Andy!

Seeing as the embargo's been broken on Andy Murray's back surgery, worth saying that he hopes to have full winter training block, fit for Oz

Sounds like it's been planned for some time.

I doubt that Croatia was a major factor, this has probably been brewing for a while. I only hope that the surgery gets him fixed up properly as he's been having back problems for a while now.

It's now all over twitter that Andy is out of the Asian tournaments and doubtful for the O2 in November. I'm sure he wouldn't be taking this step unless they were sure it would improve the situation. I'm sure he'll come back stronger in 2014.

Wishing Andy well and a speedy recovery. I'm sure the consultation and advice has been at the highest level and this is the best time to sort out health problems. I wonder what sort of surgery it will be.
Looking forward to seeing him on Mock The Week tonight though!

well hooray! really pleased to hear that andy is doing something now to sort out his back. I thought he played really well on the clay - wonder if he was feeling 'demob happy', knowing that next week he would be off the tennis treadmill, and coming back stronger for the Oz slam.

Who does Sky Sports News have on to discuss Andy? Clueless Cowan! He suggested that his back problem flared up in the transition from hard to clay for the Davis Cup. There was no recognition that his injury may have affected his play in Canada and the US Open just that he didn't play particularly well and Wawrinka was red hot. His final comment was that "Andy's injury is no where as bad as Nadal's knee problem" and that this break will do him good mentally.

I'm sure Andy has given him his own personal insight into how bad his back problem is and that Rafa has done similar for his knees in order that the Clown Cowan can give the nation the benefit of his inside knowledge - what an idiot!

It's probably the ideal time for Andy to get this sorted (hopefully) once and for all. I'm kind of the opinion that the slams are a fair bit more important than the World Tour Finals - even though I'd rather see him play there, as I plan to be going again this year. But that's me being a bit selfish, I guess.

I wonder about the extent to which it impacted his US Open campaign?

His last time out for injury served him rather well, so perhaps good to go by that, I would think.

It will be be great if they can solve his probem which niggles alot of the time. It is a good time for a break as he as achieved such heights this year and mentally not having to worry about his back will be a great bonus.

Shocked when Andy's tweet came in on my phone but if he needs surgery he needs it. Glad he got to play Davis Cup and I'm sure he knew this was ahead and considered damage would be minimal, I don't think he would jeopardise his career that badly. Perhaps this was his reason to play all his matches?

Well, he pulled out of the O2 because of his back before and came back stronger after the rest. Let's hope it's not too serious and the 'procedure' does the job.
I think he has known for some time that it had to come and now is a good time.
Pity about the O2 this year - I already have my tickets....but will enjoying anyway, just a little less for not seeing Andy. Hopefully Rio is not ready and this won't be the last one on home soil for him

What's so amazing is that over the last 15 months, whilst suffering from this back problem, Andy has won an Olympic Gold Medal, the US Open and Wimbledon!!! As well as playing and winning 3 rubbers at DC on his least favourite surface thereby finishing off what the lads had started at Coventry and puting GBR back into the World Group.

Just think what he can do when he's not in pain ...
;)

I'm sad that Andy is needing this treatment at all; 26 is young for such a procedure. But I'm glad he's bitten the bullet and is getting it done and dusted now so he has time to recuperate before the new season starting in January 2014; although Paris and the WTF have not been completely ruled out.

... and I really, really, hope he wins the Spoty this year!!!

Switched on 5Live this morning - the first I'd heard about this. The report stated Andy had made the decision feeling it was worth "the small risk" involved in back surgery to be pain-free in the future.

I'm sure he has had the problem for a very long time now and clearly "managing" it has become increasingly difficult. The 5Live bulletin also stated that the procedure would give him some valuable time out to rest body and mind (or words to that effect!). I personally think this is really good timing and obviously an "informed" decision as we know he has an excellent team around him and will have taken the very best medical advice.

Living with a back problem (disc trouble apparently) is very debilitating and I speak as one who has suffered most of my life due to childhood injury. I was offered surgery some years ago but instead opted to live with it. I wasn't young and there were other things going on in my life at the time, but I often wish I had gone through with it as further degenerative changes have occurred in the meantime. So, as a young, fit sportsman, I am sure Andy is doing absolutely the right thing.

Having won Wimbledon this year and just helped GB into the World Group for DC, he can feel pretty positive about his year and 2014. As a fan, I know I do!

Interesting that BBC Breakfast didn't give him a mention in their sports round-up. Weird.

From Beeb website. Couldn't have said it better myself!

Jamie Baker, Murray's friend and former Davis Cup team-mate, said: "Andy does have a knack of always looking in pain, but this is something he feels is the right thing to do and we have to trust him.
"We can't underestimate how tough emotionally the last 12 months has been, so it's understandable if he's a little bit burned out, and this break will give him the best chance of picking up more major titles next year."

Knew there was more to his discomfort than was being broadcast when I saw him wearing a vest! (Sound more like my mother every day!) Don't suppose his gallant efforts in Croatia helped the situation either but was something he wanted to do. Hopefully the op will solve the problem and he'll get back to his best very quickly. Will miss his presence though and will seem a long haul to the AO if that's what it takes. But a full recovery is paramount and we'll all have to be patient, including Andy!

I only heard about it this morning .... from one of the doctors I work with. I thought he was winding me up - everyone knows what a big Andy fan I am! I was out last night and didn't hear it on the radio this morning.

I'm really glad he has made the decision to do it now. I'm so gald he played DC - he needed that boost especailly as he would have known the surgery was coming up. There is no way he would have played if there was a risk of damaging it further.

I wasn't going to WTF anyway this year and feel a bit better about missing it now .... although I would still have liked to go, and of course there's still a slim chance Andy will be there (very slim IMHO). Will look forward to 2014 then .....

Gutted that he is out for the rest of the year, but if this procedure sorts out the problem once and for all then it will be worth it. We have known for ages that this problem has been around, and he must have a pretty high pain threshold to be able to play the gruelling tennis that he does even with this. There was something clearly not right at the USO, we could all see it - he was not firing on all cylinders. It makes the DC last week even more incredible. Maybe now some of the detractors will stop with the horrible comments - can we expect a proper apology from Virginia do you think, after her particularly horrible comments last year?? The timing is probably the only sensible option - he had to defend the USO really and he was committed to DC, so even though he will lose points from the Asia swing, it gives him recovery time before the winter training block. And hopefully it will also give him a bit of down time just to relax, enjoy spending time at home with Kim and the dogs and really take in everything he has achieved this year. For sure, we are going to miss him so much - Aussie Open seems so far away. But to have Andy back at full fitness, mentally and physically refreshed, and ready to take on a full schedule in 2014 will be worth it. Lots of luck Andy, really hope and pray that the surgery does the trick. xx

It's interesting that Andy has been struggling with his back since before Lendl came on the scene and yet they have achieved so much. The injury must have limited what they could work on to a certain extent. Lendl has always said that Andy has so much scope for improvement - what an exciting prospect if he is fully fit!

20-09-2013, 21:06
Good luck with the operation Andy. I hope everything is made right and then everything put back where it should be! Fingers crossed

Definitely good timing. Even in terms of rankings - as the ESPN article mentioned states, Andy is extremely unlikely to loss a top four spot by the AO.

He will also be able to spend some time with Kim and his dogs, chill out and finally fully take in the Wimbledon triumph.
And the lack of pain when he restarts playing will be a massive encouragement to go out there and have a sensational 2014.

ON a sentimental note, I hope Andy, Ross and Colin are all 100% in January and choose the same pre-AO warm-up tournament and celebrate all being back on the court!

I too believe it would be a travesty if Andy does not win SPOTY this year. Winning Wimbledon is in my opinion always what he needed to stand a real chance and he must surely be hot favourite for this year. Last year Olympics and US was fantastic but Wiggins with a first ever Tour de France yellow jersey for a Brit plus Olympics was in my opinion fair enough to keep Andy from the top step though if Andy had won Wimbledon instead of the US Open that might have made it very difficult to seperate the two of them. However this year I can't think of much that gets close to catching the British publics attention at an individual level - Chris Froome may disagree but second Brit to win the yellow jersey has not got the same significance as last year although a win at the world championships this week could ensure a clear second place and Justin Rose won the wrong major not the Open.

Anyway hope the surgery goes well and the recovery is complete how ever long it takes. WTF participation by a healthy Andy would be great but its far more important to be ready for the Aussie Open.

Heard the news whilst incommunicado at sea on a cruise and haven't been able to get on line to :grouphug: with my Andy chums. Am sure this is a good decision - he needs to sort this out once and for all (hopefully) so he can become the best player he can be, whatever that turns out to be.

Selfishly I'm gutted because I've got WTF tix for 4 days including the semis and final - a 60th birthday pressy. Not sure what to do - hedge my bets that he'll play or try to sell some of my tix? Hmmmmm. Not likely to be able to go next year either and then there's only one year left at the O2 after that, I believe.

Ah well, all the very best to Andy for a speedy and full recovery.

Nothing official but these tweets indicate all is well:

I Love Andy Murray ‏@Iloveandymurray (https://twitter.com/Iloveandymurray) 3h (https://twitter.com/Iloveandymurray/status/382179614627360768)
@poppyforest (https://twitter.com/poppyforest) @BadToss (https://twitter.com/BadToss) @withanryn (https://twitter.com/withanryn) a little bird told me he's ok, op went well :)

couple of days in hospital and that's all. This little bird is very reliable ;)

Since Judy has tweeted that she's off out to see Filth* that's another indicator that there's nothing to worry about.

* new film from Irvine Welsh of Trainspotting fame, it's being premiered in Edinburgh tonight.

My biggest fear is Mo Farah

My biggest fear is Mo Farah

Looking at the current betting odds for SPOTY winner, Andy is outright favourite to win it. I defo think Andy will win it :yahoo: I just can't wait to watch the wimby footage they have of him when they show all the candidates year in action!

If Andy doesn't win this year I will be very shocked. I like Mo but they have to give it to Andy!

Just had to chime in here after a long time away (from the forum - never Andy - I've followed every single match he's played this year) to say that I'm so relieved to hear he's coming out of hospital and all's well. Definitely hope to have him at the WTF!

As a mother of sons I would say that's typical. Sounds like he's OK - lets hope the job is done and he's testing that racket arm before too long

Wondering what Andy might fit in during his recuperation. He could receive his OBE which must be gathering dust somewhere in the Palace. ;) Wasn't he also given a Civic Award by Stirling and/or Edinburgh which would require his presence then I assume there will be a tour to promote his book.
