View Full Version : DC QF Serbia v GB 2016
Congratulations to everyone on the victories. Particularly Kyle for his stunning performance. He really came of age. I think the Serbians unwittingly seemed to produce a court designed for his game. What do those of you who were there think?
Brilliant to see Dominic break his duck. James W - they also serve who make long treks to make up the team, even though it's not their natural surface.
Watching Mr M have to bite his nails in the supporters seat was also quite entertaining. Well done to Jamie and Leon. Great stuff.
The arena and weather didn't seem disposed to cooperate - those concrete seats looked painful.
Hope everyone who went enjoyed it.
What a fantastic weekend to support from the sofa - well done to all the team!

Also a sofa spectator for this tie but really enjoyed it. Kyle was just magnifcent and fulfilled the promise he showed in the first two sets against Goffin in Ghent. Jamie and Dom did a fab job too. Felt sorry for Wardy on Friday but he played much better in the dead rubber. Hope he can start to rebuild his confidence. Brilliant to see Andy turning out to support the team
Fantastic effort from all of the GB fans, enjoyed spotting forum faces when the TV cameras panned across. The venue didn't look great but that and the rain didn't seem to dampen everyone's spirits :GBflag::GBflag:
Kyle did amazingly and so good to see him step up - excited to see him continue to climb the ranks. Great to see Dom get his first win too! Gutted to miss seeing it live but excited for the semis!!

It certainly was a great performance from all the team, Kyle rose to challenge and overall inspired performances as he was really up for it,difficult conditions particularly on the 1st day. Jamie/Dom though played a pivotal role as they came through a tough match in the end with determination to put us in the driving seat. Wardy didn't perform particularly well this time but challenging for him on the clay and he was major factor in the success last year with the win over Isner in the USA tie. Whilst difficult for Andy thought it was the right decision in the circumstances and his support over the weekend was invaluable. Sometimes champions don't do too well in defending title but we have another semi at home, fabulous!:clap::clap::swingin::swingin: Well done all those who made it over, wasn't exactly the best stadium and the weather a bit frustrating but sure it was worth it!
Well done to all the intrepid AMFF crew who made it to Belgrade. It looked fun, if uncomfortable with those seats and the weather! The team were amazing and I was particularly pleased for Dom and Kyle. The noise from all the British support was incredible.
Can't wait for the semis, wherever they are.
Hello!
Sofa watcher again for this tie, took the Friday afternoon off work to watch - that was a bit of a waste LOL
Glad Wardy enjoyed the dead rubber more than the friday
Well done to DC team again! They gave us a very exciting weekend and all the more so as we now have a home match in September! Yay!!! Can't wait! So impressed with Kyle. And so impressed with all you supporters. You did a fantastic job...just so proud of you.:clap:

Well done to all the supporters out in Serbia, been following on Facebook from Florida. Good to be back on here- had to re register as if I'm a newbie. Hope to see lots of you at the semis.
So proud of the team for such a gutsy performance from the boys in very trying conditions. Kyle was magnificent, showing such maturity, particularly in finishing it off on Sunday. Strong play too from Dom and Jamie and heads up also to James for stepping up to the plate on what he knew would be a tough ask on his least favourite surface. I loved Andy's commitment to his pals and to Leon, and Treacle's cheerleading efforts in times of stress were up to his usual standard. As for our AMFFers, you were immense, despite the Glasgow weather. You certainly took one for the cause. So loved it all from the armchair (the sofa even for the odd moment).

Just checking I can post, wonderful time in Serbia
It was wonderful to be part of the forum in Serbia. I usually go with the LTA but the atmosphere sat amongst the forum was more lively. The guys did a great job, the fans did a great job supporting them and we came home with the win. Hopefully for the next tie there will be less rain, more soap, loo roll and food. And no one will conviscate me pens or tissues!
I was told the BBC kept showing all of us all the time and not just the barmy army during all the matches. Even though I sat at the top, on the Sunday, I got spotted on the TV by my family.
Apparently, it's the first tie we've won since 1986 without Andy Murray playing.

I must have imagined the ties I went to a few years back where we won without him then

I thought it was the first World Group tie GB has won without Andy since 1986.
Or Water Suncream and coins!
They took pens, tissues, money, suncream?????????????????????? How on earth did they justify that?
To be honest that sort of thing really puts me off attending events.

They seemed to think we would throw/set fire to things! Some if us just hid stuff and lied!

How ridiculous.
I did lose my water and coins but I was allowed my suncream and insect repellent
With regards to the tissues we were told the concern was that we may set light to them and throw them. When I said I had no lighter that didn't matter. Someone told my partner Kev that they had a sporting event where people had thrown coins so that's why they were banned. But they didn't say why in the pens. I wasn't searched fully on Friday or Sunday but when I came back after the rain on Friday evening and when I entered on Saturday they took everything out of my bag and checked my purse. Though I guess at the world tour finals they took my cough sweets as they said they were food. Not sure who eats stepsils for fun haha 😂
I thought it was the first World Group tie GB has won without Andy since 1986.
Don't think the words "world" and "group" were mentioned in the first post

How Andy sat there through that awful, weather I cannot imagine, but all credit to him. What a great example of a team player
How Andy sat there through that awful, weather I cannot imagine, but all credit to him. What a great example of a team player Well most of the British fans did so why shouldn't Andy?! Virtually no Serbian fans came back for the end of Kyle v Tipsy. I really felt for Tipsy to be honest.
The rest of the weekend she just felt tipsy...

Extracts from the Daily Telegraph report on Sunday.
Simon Briggs might not be aware that ceiling height was a factor in NOT holding the SF last year at the Hydro.
Great Britain’s quest for a second successive Davis Cup title will continue in September, thanks to the weekend’s heroics from British No 2 Kyle Edmund (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/tennis/2016/07/17/kyle-edmund-delivers-as-great-britains-magical-davis-cup-journey/). There are at least two possible venues for the home semi-final against Argentina. Glasgow’s Hydro Arena is the early favourite, followed by Birmingham’s Barclaycard Arena.
The British team celebrated their success with gusto on Sunday night (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/tennis/2016/07/17/davis-cup-andy-murray-hails-big-weapons-of-kyle-edmund-as-great/), and rightly so, for this was their first World Group victory claimed without the services of Andy Murray since 1986. Neither Tim Henman nor Greg Rusedski ever matched what Edmund achieved in Belgrade, winning two singles rubbers in a weekend at this level.
Serbia could dictate the court surface ... but not the weather!
;)
Serbia insisted on clay, because it would require an awkward process of acclimatisation after Wimbledon (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/tennis/2016/07/11/andy-murray-unlikely-to-play-serbia-davis-cup-tie-after-wimbledo/). Yet while this device achieved the desired effect of keeping Murray away, they still ended up being hoist with their own petard. On an unseasonably dank and cold weekend in Belgrade, the muddy clay of the Tasmajdan Stadium produced glacially slow playing conditions. This in turn favoured Edmund’s flame-thrower of a forehand, which he likes to set up by running around his backhand.
s'true!
Team spirit has always been a feature of Smith’s Great Britain, and once again they were more unified than their opponents. Credit must go to Andy Murray, too. To travel to Serbia was impressive enough, let alone to remain sitting at the side of the court in a downpour as Edmund outclassed Janko Tipsarevic. How many players of Murray’s stature would have shown such dedication to their team-mates?
... bring it on!
So what of Argentina, who beat Italy 3-1? Federico Delbonis – who ambushed Murray during his traditional spring slump in Indian Wells this year – scored two singles points, while another point was claimed in the doubles, in which Juan Martin del Potro returned to the cup after a four-year absence.
awww, that's nice to read:
“Del Potro coming back obviously is big for them,” said British captain Leon Smith yesterday, as the British team prepared to hitch a ride home with Murray on a private jet.
Wherever the semi final will be held, at least they won't charge a secret Euro tax which I wasn't told about until I got to my hotel in Belgrade.
Was this the city tax? €1.50 pp/pn it did tell us about that one on booking.com
The rest of the weekend she just felt tipsy...
I wish .... ;):laugh::laugh:
Yes it was, JerryD. Luckily, I only got charged 1 Euro per night.
Yeah I can't remember exactly what it was. It was charged in dinar on my bill
Also, at the change of ends, they kept playing the same tune until we won the tie.

Like that would work! lol!
That was weird because they didn't have it in the first day. It was annoying though

What exactly was that tuneless ditty that they played? It sounded like one of those painful primary school concerts I used to have to go to?!
Barmy Army looked confused for a nano second - as did we all - before launching into more singing!
I've been trying to find it on YouTube. No joy.

I've been trying to find it on YouTube. No joy.
I read somewhere it was a Serbian battle tune and a bit of googling took me to Drina March or the March on Drina - a few versions, the trumpet one sounds good!
Just found a version recorded by The Shadows on an album called Shadow Music.
Sounds like the version played at DC was the worst one they could find...

It was really annoying. A couple of times per match, ok, but every change of ends?! Pain in the butt!
It was lovely to meet you by the way. It was great having some young, loud support in our midst.
Of course, we won't have to sit on big, hard stoned seats in September. Every time it rains, we won't have to make a quick dash to find any shelter.
