Rogers Cup main thread.

Andy not playing so it is in Tour Tennis.

Whilst disappointing in a way probably best decision for Andy. Federer and Nadal have also pulled out,no word from Djokovic yet so he may still be playing.

I agree James, it's sensible for Andy to get a good hard court training block done before Rio because with that and the U.S. Open he's obviously keen to do well. But I feel sorry for the Toronto organisers with the big names pulling out. Having said that, a great opportunity just opened for another player outside the Big 4 to win a big tournament. Assuming Novak also pulls out.

Well as I'm actually going to Rogers Cup I must say I'm VERY disappointed about Andy and Rafa. The men's Rogers Cup always gets screwed in an Olympic year. BUT I hope I get to see the Canadian players. And I hope Djokovic pulls out too otherwise he'll run away with it.

Why not try and go ljs -I think Raonic has a great shot of winning this. He's confident after playing really well at Queens and Wimbo, plus a few tough opponents have dropped out & Novak not likely to be is best. And what with home advantage as well can really see Raonic getting his first masters.

Milos will be amongst the field in the WTF again I imagine so that's a good place to see him. I was lucky enough to see him in the semis and finals of queens and the first Monday of Wimbledon. With regards to the Rogers cup though someone suggested to me that only players who aren't competing in the Olympics are going to go. So if Djokovic doesn't pull out I wonder if he will go to Rio. It's a shame ferrer has pulled out I was hoping he'd get some more points to be in with a chance of making the wtf I always love seeing him there. Any ideas if Delpo is playing the Rogers?

Saw a picture of him in Tandil so I doubt it.

I really like Delpo, he's a great player and seems like a good guy, you've got to respect s guy who fights back from injury as many times as he has and who signs autographs and spends time with the fans even when he loses. I'm really hoping he gets don solid wins and works his way back up the rankings

It seems that Djokovic has confirmed that he's playing the Rogers Cup. My guess is he'll give Cinci a miss. I think it's the only Masters he hasn't won but, after Rio, he'll probably think that can be a priority for another year.

Nick in more trouble
World number 19 Nick Kyrgios suffered a shock defeat by Wimbledon junior champion Denis Shapovalov in the first round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

He was beaten 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 6-3 in his first match since losing to eventual champion Andy Murray at Wimbledon.

"I'm not going to tell you what I did or didn't do to prepare. I just played pretty bad," said the Australian, 21.

Canadian Shapovalov, 17, is competing in only his second ATP event, and plays Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov next.

Ranked 370 in the world, Shapovalov struck 12 aces in the match against an off-key Kyrgios, who served 18 double faults.

Am going all day/evening Wednesday and Djokovic is playing during the day so I'll be on the grounds checking out some doubles during that match. The ticket rep told me Milos is playing the evening match FOLLOWED by Denis vs Dmitrov. I will be at Port Dover floating on the waves , but hopefully be home in time to watch Milos

Yes last night was great for Dennis Shapovolov , he played great !!!! He seems like such a humble young guy too !!

Not sure what to say about Nick , all this on court talk of " I dont wanna be here , I wanna go straight home " He didnt look like he was even trying during some of that match last night !!

Such talent but Im beginning to wonder if he really wants to play at all

I watched some of the match between Nick and Denis. Was very impressed with young Denis, but I did think Nick had that very casual 'I really don't feel like trying' attitude about him. I actually feel sorry for Nick...he comes across as a lost soul. I hope he finds what he is looking for which will make him happier, but I do feel he does have a lot to offer tennis.

Alis

Like you, pl, I feel sorry for Nick. He has tremendous natural talent but he is young and has huge media pressure. That really isn't easy to cope with at twenty-one. He needs someone who has been through it, like Andy, to mentor him but that isn't going to happen anytime soon. Maybe Lleyton could be his saviour. It would be a great shame if he didn't reach his full potential - he could achieve so much and be a great asset to the tour.

Yes I watched about a set and his opponent was trying every shot and Nick was too casual.
Still time for him to turn it around. He is still in the top 30 and that gives enough profile.

Don't know if I'd go as far as saying ill, but I definitely thought he looked haggard - he seems to have aged a lot in a short period of time. I really think he's a bit emotionally and physically burnt out. He's been no. 1, the hunted man, for a long time and maybe it's catching up with him. Andy on the other hand is looking great, very strong, fresh and confident, and I'm certain he will be the dominant player for the rest of the season.

Had a GREAT time yesterday in Toronto. It was BOILING hot - 38 inc. the humidity but luckily for us we had an air-conditioned suite which I made full use of. Got to see Nishikori and Djokovic followed by a spot of doubles featuring Berdych/Stepanek vs Bopanna and Rojer. But I did also venture out of centre court to see the players on the practice and outside courts. Saw Jamie Murray sans shirt with Louis Cayer, Bruno and an older man whom don't know, as well as numerous others: Stan the Man, Nick K., Thiem, Coric, Karlovic, Cilic, Goffin, Querrey, Bryan Bros, Daniel Nestor. Watched Gael Monfils vs Vasek Pospisil on grandstand from the second row in searing humid heat - but it was worth it! During the night session I watched Milos win then 17 yr old Canadian Wimbledon junior winner Denis Shapovalov battle it our vs Dimitrov from the very top section. Great day of tennis!

I do hate how expensive it's all become to attend these tournaments. A tiny bottle of water cost $3.50 which is INSANE! And an mini Hagen Daz was $6.75. AND there were NO water fountains to refill aforementioned tiny water bottles. Good job we all brought food with us and enjoyed a lovely buffet with lots of leftovers for those of us staying the evening to eat for our dinner. I've posted pix on my FB page.

Monf was on fire, so good to see him back in great form. Novak will have his hands full, not least because Monf is the more confident player at the moment. Would love Gael to make the final. Gael didn't really play badly IMO - but standing 10 feet behind the baseline and pushing has never been an effective strategy against Nole, has it...

I turned it off well b4 then....the minute he started throwing his daft celebration act! Seriously how pathetic & embarrassing does he look? Even big novak fans i know on twitter are cringing at him :shamed::shamed::shamed:

You are right! Whole thing is so embarrassing. Jelena needs to have a word!

Having deliberately avoided a hug at the net, this is Kei's reaction when Djokovic suggests they all go at it! :big grin:
Kei is not the only one with same thoughts in that photograph! The lady in the white dress for one! I also turned away before having to watch Nole's crazy 'I've just won the match, love me' routine so I missed his hugathon. Sounds very cringeworthy indeed.

Watched a Sky Sports clip of the hug-in. As cringey as expected but on a more serious note, I wonder what Nole's desire to be adored says about his psychology? There's probably a book in it for some sport psychologist somewhere

Guess I see it a bit differently. Dont find it " cringeworthy " really , I think its just who he is
And with all the hate in the world right now , is it really such a bad thing ?

It's not who he is though, it's entirely calculated and artificial. IMO!

Totally agree! He seems to try various different ways of getting folk to like him, few years back it was the imitating other players, then came the daft dancing on court. Reeks of desperation.

Andy travelled to Serbia to support his DC teammates; the same weekend Novak was in MonteCarlo posting pix on Twitter of himself having fun near his tax exile home. Says it all imo.

Well the cameras couldn't find anyone in the Canadian crowd who seemed to want to hug - so I don't think it went down all that well. Not too much antagonism in a Canadian crowd that would mean they need to be told to hug other people!

I think Djokovic is genuine and well meaning but that doesn't stop me finding some of his behaviour awkward to say the least.

This is exactly how I feel.

Context is important; Serbia has had big trouble with the issues at hand, and remains prone to extreme views. Novak knows his influence in the country is astronomical, so wanted to send a positive message during tense times - yes, ott and awkward, but well meaning.

The same goes for his prior behaviour - he may not go about it the best way, but he has always wanted to be a good ambassador for a country with a troubled past.

I think some of the comments about him are a bit judgemental (including the tax haven gripes).

He is a generous person who has poured more millions in to trying to progress his society than his tax bill would ever have been.

He's a bit of a prat, but his heart is definitely in the right place.

I love the 'he's a bit of a prat' comment.

Yes I do think Novak is genuine and does care but I think he is still a bit removed from reality. I think telling people to hug each other in the face of the world's problems is actually condescending and patronising. People are more intelligent than to think a crowd of wealthy people (I'm sure very nice) hugging each other in a tennis stadium is making any difference to anything. I may want a better world, but I am not going to hug 'to order'.

I agree to a point ... Yes his heart is in the right place and yes he has done huge amounts to help his country, but sometimes it feels like it is on his terms. Talking to a few Serbians whilst in Belgrade, I got a feel for how big he is there and that made me feel sad for all the people who paid for tickets to watch DC, that they didn't get to see their hero. Groups of school children there who must have been so disappointed. It was Novak's home country, could he not have put in an appearance to support his team and spend a bit of time with those children? In his absence however, said children seemed quite taken with Andy who spent time signing autographs etc ... that's our boy ;) :big grin:

Hmm, I don't recall Andy making an appearance at the home ties he didn't play, just so fans weren't disappointed.;) I feel that fans have to accept that Andy and Novak can't do it all - I would have told those school children what I told my neices when they threatened a whinge at Novak's absence; go and support the rest of your team! They didn't go in the end, because they've gone to see my dad in the US, but they would have loved Andy's autograph - he's very well liked over there :)

Andy has certainly been there before when not playing......think it may have been Liverpool.

I also like Rosie Bear's "bit of a prat"comment. I'm sure Djokovic is well meaning, he is of course supremely talented and grew up in a tremendously difficult world, which is why I cringe a bit at his actions at the end of matches. He doesn't need to do it, just be yourself, do what you do and the rest will take care of itself. Anyway he only does it when he wins, and I'm hopeful that Andy will putting a stop to it ;)
