Not sure why Golf is in the Olympics
I'm looking forward to Team GB here, bring it on
I have just seen this. It did make me smile. Who needs golf, when you could have........

Well that would be different!
:rolling:
I've changed my mind about our flag bearer. I thought they might choose that English golfer, who made the headlines earlier this year. I now think it might be Mo Farah.

Arrived back home from a very hot and sunny London to find they still haven't announced the venue.
It was certainly hot on the tube and in the Olympic stadium yesterday....and that was before Mo started running, hard to believe it is 4 years since i was there to see Mo complete his double
I, also, was at the stadium to watch Mo run.
IOC have bottled it. Shock horror.

So the IOC has passed the buck - there's a surprise. Now it's up to the governing body of each individual sport to decide what to do about their Russian entrants. It will be interesting to see who does what - particularly as far as tennis is concerned.

Sally has posted on the Rio tennis thread the decision of the ITF with regard to the 7 Russian tennis players going to Rio......

BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/36878983)- Rio Olympics 2016: Russia not given blanket Games ban by IOC
Is Sally's posting on this thread or elsewhere? As I understand it, the IOC have said that no Russian athlete can compete in their chosen discipline unless the governing body of that discipline has cleared them to compete. That involves them having been tested by agencies other than the Russian Federation doping agency.

FINA have decided to make waves, at least.

BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/36889171) - Rio Olympics 2016: Yuliya Stepanova challenges IOC ruling on doping ban

BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/36898590) - BBC - Rio 2016: Russian drug cheats will still be at Olympics, say whistleblowers
By the sounds of it, The Rio Olympics are descending into a complete farce, what with the problems with the Russian's, Zika, unfinished accommodation blocks, and the suggestion that the aquatics events will be carried out in incredibly polluted water. In London 2012, there was the ticketing farce and problems with security, but I don't think anyone truly doubted that the British would muddle through in their usual fashion with everything being alright on the day. I don't have the same feeling with Rio.

Having missed one test you'd think an athlete would be ultra careful about missing anymore, apparently not.
The first one apparently was the failure of the doping control officer so does not count.
A statement on behalf of Armitstead said: “Cas ruled that the Ukad doping control officer had not followed required procedures nor made reasonable attempts to locate Armitstead.
Apparently her phone was switched off and she didn't get the messages and also when the doping officials called at the hotel she was staying at 6am they didn't have appropriate id and hotel staff wouldn't let them go up to her room. The big question is why she didn't appeal this missed test at the time. As other athletes are saying, once you miss a test you're on heightened alert for the next 12 months not to miss anymore. Missing two further tests is unprofessional to say the least even if there is a sudden family crisis. A Belgian cyclist was drug tested at a crematorium when he was making arrangements for the death of his infant son. Chris Froome had a similarly missed test (https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2015/jun/24/chris-froome-missed-drug-test-tour-de-france) last year.

Yes, she should have appealed against the first missed test, but no idea if she would have been allowed to do that.
Reading a bit further it seems Lizzie Armistead accepted responsibility for the first missed test when put to her by UK Anti-Doping at the time and it was only after the third missed test that she decided to challenge on a technicality through CAS. Hence this statement from UKAD after today's decision.
Ms Armitstead chose not to challenge the first and second Whereabouts Failures at the time they were asserted against her. At the CAS hearing, Ms Armitstead raised a defence in relation to the first Whereabouts Failure, which was accepted by the Panel. We are awaiting the Reasoned Decision from the CAS Panel as to why the first Whereabouts Failure was not upheld.
Christina O The British 4 00 meter athlete was banned few years back for missing three, remember one of her excuses was gates to train venue where closed so she went home

Andy started off one-handed as promised, but then clearly decided waving the flag was way cooler - good call, looked awesome. Saw all of the GB tennis team apart from Jo as the team walked out.
Stuck the ceremony out to the bitter end - really need to sleep now! Gotta say though, the mirror sculpture reflecting a smaller-than-normal Olympic Flame cauldron was fantastic. Great message, after all the themes of global warming and rainforest degradation during the ceremony, yet stunningly beautiful all the same.
I thought the London 2012 flame was fabulous, but I actually think this tops it :)

Stayed up for Andy and our team. Lovely to see him appreciated by the UK and so proud carrying the flag. Need to watch the ceremony's end at some point today. Good to see Rafa so happy pleased too. Andy's bit was short but hoping to catch extra videos and pictures later today. (we were spoilt by the GB section from London which was obviously far longer!)
Thought the graphics were fabulous and lots of lovely bright colours but don't think anything good ever beat the Danny Boyle ceremony for me.
Saturday morning 9.15 on BBC2 - repeat of the opening ceremony.
Really wanted to stay up, and was tucked up in bed with a glass ready, but just couldn't make it. Fell asleep just as it was starting. Have recorded the whole thing. So pleased he got the gig. It seems to have made him stand even taller. Federer takes the adulation and syncophancy for granted, Djokovic tries constantly to get it and if he doesn't, frequently demands it, I think Andy Murray, needs and wants to be loved and valued, by the GBP, but doesn't seem to think he is worthy of it somehow. Being selected for things like this really does seem to give him a much needed shot of self esteem. Watched the highlights on BBC, his joy and pride really shines though. It's great to see.
I managed to stay the course (unlike me) and thought it was excellent and, like KnightOwl, I was wowed by the flame cauldron and its mirrors. Apparently it will be wind powered throughout the games. Andy was great, so happy and proud but sadly out of shot so quickly. It looks from the photo that he had some sort of support on his left wrist. I couldn't help worrying about him standing about for hours after the parade. Can't say I was over enthusiastic about the uniform jackets but, hey, they looked better than the Germans!

I really liked Camaroon's uniforms.
That cauldron is spectacular!
Great ceremonies overall. Canadian tv managed to get an interview with Andy before he went out. He looked nervous but did so well. Lovely to see Rafa as well. Great tweet from C. Nguyen who said "Rafa Nadal has withdrawn from the Olympics due to broken cheekbones" coz he was smiling so much.
Pity about the GB outfits. A friend (who likes and supports Andy, but not to the extent of joining a forum) said this morning 'poor Andy looked so awful in that raincoat'. And the outfits did indeed look like rain jackets which looked bizarre worn with shorts. I wonder who designed them? Anyway, apart from that, it was great to see Andy and Rafa as flagbearers. Vamos to both of them!

They have got lots of red button channels on the BBC, but not all of us can get the channels on Freeview. I can't where I am but there is an old ariel here. There are more channels on the internet than the red button I believe.

Think Stella McCartney did the Team GB designs again. I did prefer this year's to the white and gold blingey tracksuit Chris Hoy wore as the 2012 flag bearer, but the raincoat style was a bit weird. Liked Heather's tennis gear today though

I agree Kath, I thought Hev's tennis outfit today was lovely. I managed to stay awake long enough last night to see Andy enter the arena. As you have all already said, it was over so quickly, but there was still enough time to make me well up with pride for our Andy. I was all goosebumpy watching his obvious pride and joy. Andy's jacket looked as if it didn't fit him properly. Why on earth use Stella McCartney when a smart blazer and shorts could be bought from any up-market men's outfitters. I like her designs on the kit worn by competitors but the outfits for the ceremony were very disappointing.
I, too, thought Andy looked uncomfortable in his jacket - not sure whether it was too big for him or just badly cut. GB didn't look nearly as elegant as some but not an absolute disaster either, like some - Germany springs to mind.

Ross Murdoch though disappointing as he failed to qualify for the final, unfortunately both Hannah Miley (by 15/100 of a second) and Max Litchfield just missed out in 4th place.Australia leading the medal table right now with 2 gold and 3 overall, though both USA and Japan have 5 medals.

Great from the swimmers two medals for us

It was well worth losing sleep over! I managed 9 holes of golf this morning on 4 hours sleep....seriously doubt I will be able to stay awake to watch all that will be on offer later, but will do my best! Eyes heavy now!! But hey...it's great!

It deffo was worth waiting up and can't usually do that due to work. Making the most if being off this week, will stay up if there's something I want to see and then sleep late. But next week will need to be a bit more sensible. Think I'll be a bit sleep deprived from now til end of us open.
A bronze in shooting for Team GB's Ed Ling.

Awesome from Tom and Dan to nail the bronze though got tense! Fell away a bit in the middle but stepped up,Chinese though proved hard to stop.:cheer::cheer::clap::clap: The individual 10m platform should be stronger for Tom though still tough to win-not till 19/20th.
If you didn't know the diving scores and were just looking at the celebrations, who would you think won gold? ;)
I know Bardot , were they excited or what !!!!!!!
Good news for Tom and Dan :) another medal :)

Oh fgs, do we really need the post mortem? "What was he trying to do?" asks Claire Balding. His best is the answer. Leave Louis alone.
Yet another 4th in the women's rugby 7s.
Max Whitlock scored a magnificent 15.991 on pommel even after Louis Smith's error, that's gutsy. I would think that was the highest score of the night.
There was me thinking I was watching the synchronised pairs.

2 bronzes today maybe another medal in the pool tonight
I watched the diving and what struck me about the results were just how ecstatic all the medalists were. Tom and Dan were chuffed to bits with their medals. Non of this "it's the wrong colour nonsense". They were delighted to have got anything at all, and they earned it by keeping their heads together in that final make or break dive.

I totally agree Teresa. He was the same in London with his bronze. The quality is so high from a large group in the diving - same with the gymnasts who narrowly missed out. To be 4th in the world is no bad thing for them so I hope that they can appreciate that. They have their individuals to go now too so not all lost by any means.
With regard to the newspapers (most of them) publishing the picture of only the Daley half of the sync diving....there is no justification whatsoever for that...it took the 2 of them and that is IT! It was heart-warming to watch their pure joy and their last dive was amazing. Come on press...get your act together! I think (am hoping) this omission has gone viral.
The men's 10,000 final will be at 1.25am on Sunday. It looks like I won't be getting much sleep.
British guys in the men's pair skulls were fantastic well done getting second back from the South Africans after not having the best start. A great finish though. Got to be a medal for these guys
Second in the semi for the Brits in the women's double sculls. A fantastic performance. I was a little worried briefly with Aussies along side and France gaining but then they pulled away again! Well done girls

Just get the feeling that these Games are going to end up hugely disappointing for Team GB.
Isn't it usual for the next games after the home ones to be a bit dire? Nothing can equal London 2012. These whole games feel a bit sullied anyway by the fact the IOC missed an opportunity to really demonstrate zero tolerance of drug abuse. They bottled it at the last moment. I don't think they are going to go down as one of the great modern Olympic Games.

2 more silvers. After a disappointing London 2012 the swimmers have so far got all our medals bar one.

Yep apparently the swimmers have already had the best Olympics ever in medal total. I think heard that - and there are more to come... Cycling medals today?? And so much tennis!
I sat up, with my daughter, until 4 this morning to watch Duncan Scott in the relay final. My daughter taught Duncan until he left school last year so we had a vested interested and it was well worth the bleary eyes this morning. Well done to all the swimmers - the relay boys and Siobhan-Marie - and good luck for the final tonight Duncan!

Certainly was a great night in the poll with silvers for Siobhan-Marie O’Connor and the 200m relay team featuring Stephen Milne, Duncan Scott, Dan Wallace, and James Guy, well done! Some exciting performances all round with Phelps and Ledecky doing well. Certainly wasn't expecting GB to do that well in the relay and whilst some events this far have been disappointing swimmers doing us proud.
Was really pleased for James Guy after just missing out in his first event. Decided to put the divers in with the swimmers - it's in water and they wear trunks, and they need to be able to swim to do it.....!!!
We have also got more medals than we had at an equivalent stage of London 2012.
Just get the feeling that these Games are going to end up hugely disappointing for Team GB.
It is early days yet - apparently they said earlier that we are doing better at this stage than 2012.
