View Full Version : Thread caching

Knightowl:

I've been trawling various web-caches trying to recover lost threads - I managed to find some of your blog Maureen, but just the first few pages

If you kept your own backups, you could always post them again?

Master Yorkie:

I wanted to test a theory I had about how some forum threads may still be avalible on caching services so I have had a go at a method I know, Below is an archived version of last years bubble gap results

Manaus:

Making use of what Master Yorkie did in the BG thread I was able to find a cached copy of the thread. I think everybody's entries are on it. Problem is I think it's an older copy as there are some bits of missing information since we were allowed to edit our entries until the deadline.

A few of us have had some success at finding bits of the forum on caching services (Primarily Google - at least in my case)

In case anyone else wants to have a go I have compiled some instructions on how to attempt it, below. (Not the most organised, but better than nothing, I hope!)

If anyone else wants to find an old thread what you need to do is paste the link of the page you are looking for after this prefix
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:
(or cache: - if using chrome)

For instance (in chrome), to find the list of old competitions I would, add cache: to http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?16-Competitions and get cache:http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?16-Competitions

A couple of notes though, the pages that still appear on the website, will still be updated on googles Caching service, so you will not be able to find the old pages for very long.
Only some pages are cached (unfortunantly), for instance upon checking - completely randomly - for pages 500-520 of the andy murray newspaper reports, I could only find pages 503 (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?44-Newspaper-and-internet-reports/page503),506 (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?44-Newspaper-and-internet-reports/page506),509 (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?44-Newspaper-and-internet-reports/page509),510 (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?44-Newspaper-and-internet-reports/page510),511 (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?44-Newspaper-and-internet-reports/page511),513 (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?44-Newspaper-and-internet-reports/page513),516 (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?44-Newspaper-and-internet-reports/page516),517 (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?44-Newspaper-and-internet-reports/page517),518 (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?44-Newspaper-and-internet-reports/page518)

Also, this will only take you to that page, if you want to click on a link to another page, you have to add the prefix shown above after you have clicked the link. (and cross your fingers it is there!)
I don't know how long this system will work, so if you do need to find something, try quickly.
I think most, if not all of the first pages of threads are backed up this way, but subsequent pages are much more random! :surprised:

If I may add my thanks, :thanks: Knightowl for reinstating some of the Davis Cup Memories.

If everyone tried to resurrect a bit of the forum, I think we could go rather a long way, (I know it wouldn't be perfect - especially as there are only some things in the cache!)

Did I start this thread or was it a mod? I cannot remember starting this thread at all!
:confused::shocked::faint:

I am sure I posted this under Manaus's comment about using thread caching!

I'm managing to find less and less, as I think the pages are beginning to age out of the cache, but there may still be some nuggets to find. You do need to know the exact URL of the thread you're looking for tho.

One useful trick I found was to get the URL of a whole forum section eg Thanks for the Memories and add that to the Google cache search Master Yorkie mentioned - that way you can find a cached version of the the thread list for that section, with loads of threads listed - clicking on each of these will tell you the thread URL (although the thread itself may be missing) which again you can look for in the cache search.

A bit long-winded, but that's how I managed to recreate a few blog posts :)

Is there anything that it would be useful to find - eg. comp results. If you tell me what needs looking for I could have a go, as I have some spare time to use.

Reinstated the link to the 2016 Wimbledon pickem on touneytopia, didn't think it worth quoting the first 22 posts (the ones I could find), as I thought the link was the important thing

Thanks Master Yorkie. :thanks:

If you get a chance to find the first pages of the other pickems - French 2016, Aus 2016, US 2015 that would be great as having the link would help me to set up the next ones - very difficult to find on Tournietopia and it also gives the password to get into them!!!

Of course any page on the newspaper thread would be very useful - but it is a very large thread so I do not know how doable it is- maybe start backwards from the latest posts if you get time.

KnightOwl

How would you want to do the Newspaper thread Cazza? It would look odd to have them randomly among the current stuff, and even for mods it's tricky to insert pages mid-thread!

I would suggest we set up a Newspaper and Internet History thread, but then working backwards would also look odd :)

Do people really go back and read really old reports?

Any thoughts?

cazza99

Yes, a separate newspaper history thread would be fine.

Thought about the working backwards bit as the caches are disappearing and I guess the latest are of more importance, but it does not really matter - what is easiest.

Master Yorkie

Agreed on working backwards, I think you would have to re-insert the links manually though. I will have a look, but I suspect the most recent reports (Eg things after 5th July) may not be present. I think I may be able to find some though.

A bit long-winded (You have to re-embed every single external link), but I have made a start on the fragment archive.

Sorry I can't be much use:

The links to the French Pickem thread are dead :grrr:
The Aussie and US open comps were run by super8, who used a file with the comp on, not tourneytopia - so also don't contain any link to tourneytopia!
(At least the Wimbledon Thread worked)

:thanks: for trying. Just for your info super8 ran the women's pickems. The men's were on Tournietopia and I set them up.

Fair enough, I just can't seem to find any mens Aussie or US open pickems on the above list - tell me if I'm missing something, or if they were on another sub forum somewhere.

link does not work for me - they were all in the competition forum. But don't worry I will have to set up the next ones with a new name if I can't find the old ones.

My mistake - that link was a dud, I have found the Australian pickem link to tourneytopia, and the french pick'em results - but no link!
(On the comps page now)

Has anyone tried yahoo's cache - I just thought of it, and found the first page to the french pickem in it (I couldn't find this page on googles cache!)
Need to investigate further - but this sounds promising!

Knightowl:
Hope this works. I found the first page of 'Ways to watch tennis on TV
I searched yahoo for 'andy murray fan forum teresa ways to watch tennis on tv'
result four was page 1
result five was page 7
I presume some of the other pages may be there as well

I would have posted this on the thread itself but it was locked (I think so anyway!)

Found page 3 of the DC memories - only 1 useful entry though.
I think google and yahoo are a bit random in what they cache, but that means they sometimes have different things!

Master Yorkie

I think bing and yahoo jointly use the same caching service, - from the look of it, they have decided to pool their resources. (I found some of the missing internet and newspaper reports in their cache though) It's completely random!

Thanks, I hadn't considered Yahoo either :)

I left the thread locked so I could try and reinstate everything in order if possible - page 1 would be great so I'll check that out. I booked a day off work tomorrow so I can spend some concentrated time trying to find as much stuff as I can.

You're right, you can get some good results by googling the exact name of the thread - that's how I found most of the TV stuff - sometimes it works, sometimes not, but it's all helping :)

Thanks for all your help with this Master Yorkie - it's really appreciated :thanks:

Spiders find pages for search engines to cache - it looks like the chinese engine Baidu is the most interested in the forum - if only there was a way to find their cached pages!

Yes, just haven't got round to it - I think at the top of the fragment archive thread there is a link and I haven't tried to find any pages with that number or a lower number.

Is it possible to rename it the 'Fragment Archive of Newspaper and Internet reports'?
I called it Newspaper and History by mistake
