View Full Version : Sports Personality 2016
I was offered a ticket for the behind the scenes on radio five live, Rosalind. I just know Inverdale gets some sports people on and talks through the whole ceremony. Then, all the winners usually turn up and talk to Inverdale afterwards. So, I would get a lot closer to the winners than I would have done in the studio.

Andy has been awarded the Sports Journalist Association "Sportsman of the Year" award for the third time (is this an omen? ;)) at a luncheon in London today. Second was Jason Kenny & third, Max Whitlock. Also nominated: Alistair Brownlee, Mo Farah and Adam Peaty.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Czulg6SXcAQPQlP.jpg
The message he sent:
“Thank you very much for the Award and sorry I can’t be there today. I’m currently in Miami and although it’s nice and sunny, I am in a lot of pain right now getting ready for the new season!!!! I appreciate all of the support you guys have given me over the years and it means a lot to win an award like this, especially in an Olympic year with so many other deserving athletes. There’s plenty for me to work on and improve, I’m looking forward to 2017 and beyond. I hope you all have a nice afternoon and a few glasses of wine, Merry Christmas, Andy”

The BBC's Red Button will be showing the sports stars arriving on the red carpet from 5.10pm (17.10pm) until 6pm (18.00pm) on Sunday.
It's usually around station 950 and I would always use it to record the red button.
proberly just as well Rio isn't on the shortlist, he would have walked it after todays amazing gesture
Rio?
-J- means Rio Ferdinand ( I hope lol!), who has just donated £500,000 of toys to Cash for Kids for needy children:thumbup:
Each day BBC5 Live are profiling each nominee with an interview with someone from the same sport. Today it was Roger Black endorsing Mo Farah. This was part of the interview.
Q. He[Mo Farah] doesn't really seem to get injured does he?
A. He doesn't but he's working with Alberto Salazar, there's been controversy this year, I don't know the ins and outs but from what I see stepping back and looking at it, they push it right to the line, right to the line. Do they cross it? Not sure they do but they push it right to the line.
Black did also praise Mo for his amazing achievements but not quite the ringing endorsement expected. At this rate they'll be getting Becker to promote Andy. ;)
Program on BBC1 now on the sports contenders. They have just covered Andy.

I missed Andy yesterday evening as I had been out but watched it through someone's mention on Facebook this morning. A couple of contributions by his father and Jamie. His slot is just under 4 mins.
It is also on BBC1 at 1.15 Saturday afternoon.

So...are we all ready to hit the telephone tomorrow night. Watching the rundown through the 16 contenders today - must say a fair all-round presentation - I just cant see many who can match Andy this year
Mo Farah deserves to be in the top section. The Trott/Kenny combination are contenders but the vote there is split and anyway its only the one event in the year - Andy has done it ALL year.
Get your dialling finger ready folks

I am registered because I also want to vote in the Strictly Final tonight.
I have just now managed to catch up with the contenders programme on BBC. Tears when Andy came on and more tears when they showed a brief resume of last year's spoty in Belfast. I was there and it brought back such wonderful memories. It was so special and such a privilege to welcome Andy and the whole DC team to Belfast. I managed to chat to Judy and her dad afterwards. That was SO special for me. Such a shame we have lost the posts from last year...I remember writing an account of my evening. Waiting with baited breath for tomorrow evening now! For anyone who is going you will have a great evening. Enjoy!!

We need to vote tomorrow. Andy is favourite but he can't win without our voting. I know I'm stating obvious but just wanted to say it!

Could perhaps count against Andy that he isn't there? Didn't in 2013 but there were no other serious contenders then. Perhaps memories of the Olympics (other more unsung winners) will be stirred and the Brownlees are bound to be there and a BIG fuss made of the helping over the line bit.
So never know. Show jumping have only one person to focus on and they have been successful in the past.
If this hadn't been an Olympic year, Andy would be nailed on to win, but I think anything can happen.

Andy could be holidaying in Timbuktu and he would still storm it tonight. The fact that he is Miami dedicating time to his training while most others are on Christmas break won't count against him, on the contrary, highlights what a dedicated, phenomenal athlete he is. Nobody else stands a chance imo.

I hope so but I'm starting to panic - for us yes but the millions of others :nailbiter: The twittersphere does seem to be pointing to Andy but there have been plenty of favourites not winning recently....

Certainly very convincing win for Andy , slightly down from 2015 in % terms but there were more contenders. A few surprises and whilst wasn't expecting Mo Farah to really challenge not a great tally. Thought Laura/Jason would've done better and would've expected Sophie to be 5th but perhaps struck a chord with some.

I think in 2013 there was only 10 contenders. And I thought they said at the time he had more votes than the rest of the others put together.
Inverdale claimed Andy got more than double the votes of Brownlee.
I listened to radio five live, afterwards. While Inverdale was talking to Andy, Skelton walked in. I thought his humour was quite good, when he mentioned about Kim not voting enough times for him.
I noticed in the background, while Andy was doing his acceptance speech, a few women on sun loungers. One of them turned to the camera and grinned. If I was her, I would have done more than grin at the camera.

Do you think that there are some groups of fans better at getting out there and voting? I think that the horsey people have done very well to get Nick to number 3. There aren't too many of them in the grand scheme of things but they clearly voted. Boxing, motor racing - I'd say they would be similar (thankfully absent imo). There are loads of us who love athletics, cycling, swimming but I don't think these athletes have such an extremely loyal group of fans who actually bother to pick up the phones. 11k for Adam Peaty is poor! The votes for cycling etc have obviously also been split between nominees.
There was an interview with Andy on BBC breakfast and they made a comment that they had asked some women in bikinis to move before they did the filming for that.
