R2 in Tokyo: Andy takes on 28yr old American (born Russian) Alex Bogomolov Jnr.

They've played twice this year already so it's a nice even H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=B842) of 1-1.
Bogo beat Andy 6-1, 7-5 in the R64 in the Miami Masters.
Andy returned the favour 6-2, 7-5 in the R16 at the Cincinnati Masters in August.
Before that they'd met in the Binghamton Ch. way back in 2005 where Andy got the win on the way to his first Challenger title

The Russian has put in some solid performances this year which have seen him rise from #118 to a career high #38 in the rankings since Miami. Andy has gained in confidence as the year has gone on and is playing some good tennis right now.

Once again they're meeting up on an outdoor hardcourt and it'll be interesting to see who comes out the winner this time around.

The match is scheduled 3rd on Centre after 2 other singles starting 12noon Tokyo/4am UK.

Likely start time - anywhere between 7am and 8.30am UK.
There might even be a livestream ..........

Outdoor. That is interesting. For some reason I thought it was indoors. C'mon Andy!

Bogomolov may have started out Russian, but now he plays as USA.

It's both. It has a retractible roof - as does Beijing. See image here. (http://www.excel7.com/worldwind/ariake.jpg)
There are images from matches earlier in the week that are clearly outdoor (sun/shadows).
Similar to Shanghai in that regard which is why a lot of players go there
See tweet from StuFraser

Coming up for 1am over in Tokyo and Stepanek & Chiudinelli are just starting a deciding set. Rain has caused this. Is there even a crowd?

Yes, when I clicked on the ATP link I got his Dad first and forgot to change the nationality.
Thanks Madeline; will change it.

Do you mean me? You know I change my avatar a lot, and I said on the temp forum that I was thinking of having and Alexandr Dolgopolov avatar, so now I have. I think I might shortly change it for James Blake. :big grin:

Allegiance? I like a lot of players. I think Dolly is great fun to watch.

Sorry yes, meant you, should've quoted. I think Dolly is really cute! James Blake's not bad either. There's a drooling smiley somewhere out there that would be handy..........especially for the shallow thread!

Linda
05-10-2011, 20:54
Oh I don't see Dolly in a drooling way at all - I just like his tennis. (Like how I see Andy.) But I do drool over James Blake!

I think Dolly is great fun to watch. His game is so varied and he really seems to enjoy his tennis. If he could get more first serves in he would be very difficult to beat as his serve is so hard to read. And he must have the best dropshot in the ATP - I've seen him make some from way behind the baseline!

Best of luck Andy. Know you can do it. Now understand Andy's reference yesterday to playing from outdoors to indoors, and how he struggles with the conditions and finding his range. It was raining yesterday and they put their retractable roof across. Mystery solved.

Andy is going for the lines and moving Bogo around the court, peppering his backhand and putting good pace and placement on his shots.

Sallydaisy
06-10-2011, 08:01
Bogo serving: 15-0, 30-0, 30-15,
30-30 as Bogo hits long and has a little racquet throw,
40-30 good rally, Andy set up a point and came into the net but was passed

2-2

Andy challenged on the last point but it was about a foot long. Not sure why he's getting a bit frustrated - just the perfectionist in him I guess.

Match synopsis

Andy Murray produced a short, sharp display of tennis this morning to book his passage into the Quarter Finals in Tokyo. Bogomolov was outclassed from the beginning and failed to find a game plan to challenge Murray.

Andy dominated the 1st set breaking his opponent in the opening game. Holding serve easily, and with another 2 breaks of serve against the American, Murray took the first set 6'1 in just 24 minutes.

Bogomolov made a better start in the 2nd set but the errors he made gave Andy plenty of chances and Murray broke in the 6th game to go 4-2 up. A clinical service game to love left the American having to serve to stay in the match at 2-5.
Andy missed the first match point but sealed the win with the 2nd one to take the set 6'2.

This was a focussed performance from Andy; he afforded his opponent no break chances and took full advantage of the shots Bogomolov hit to the Murray backhand. The match lasted just 58 minutes and provided just the kind of warm-up needed ahead of a 2nd match later today with brother Jamie in the doubles.

Match stats available off livescore here (http://www.protennislive.com/framesetperp.asp?lang=en&ref=www.atpworldtour.com).

Andy's opponent in the Quarter-Final will be either David Nalbandian or Ivan Dodig.
