No surprise ... but disappointing for the organisers!

Sad to announce that No.1 Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the 2016 tournament due to recurring left wrist injury.
Tennis never stops. The Cincinnati draw is tonight between 10.30 & midnight UK, they have a "draw party".

Kyle doing a qualifier today against Lu
Well I hope it is toodleloo for Lu.
There's speculation as to which if any of Andy, Nadal and Nishikori will actually play Cincinnati after the stress of the Olympics. What about Karlovic who is playing the final of Los Cabos today and that's his fifth tournament in 6 weeks and he's reached the final of 3 (winning Newport) of his last 4 tournaments. A remarkable performance at 37. No offence to Dr Ivo but vamos Pico as undoubtedly Andy would prefer to play Monaco in his first match.

Would they not be playing until Wednesday with their first round bye? Kyle looking on the way out 2-6 Lu
Well Andy more than most would have reason to withdraw from Cincy....he has both US Open fb DC to contend with. Neither Rafa nor Kei have DC. I would understand if he (A) did withdraw...and although I would miss him being there I almost feel perhaps he should???
I would not be at all surprised if Rafa withdraws. Having come back for the Olympics before he was really ready, and with the wrist having got worse again during the week (he has been spotted wearing the bandage off court as well as on, and his uncharacteristic high error count indicates that he is trying to finish points early) it would make sense to rest next week. His doctor is with him in Rio (as he was in Madrid when I was there) and will no doubt advise him.
Am I right in thinking that, as Andy didn't play in Toronto, he can't withdraw from Cinci without incurring a penalty?
I think you may be right.

Great comeback fighting win by Kyle in 3 winning 2 tiebreaks, now faces Sugita who knocked out Pella
Am I right in thinking that, as Andy didn't play in Toronto, he can't withdraw from Cinci without incurring a penalty?
That's what I thought.
Rafa wearing a bandage is hardly surprising but I suppose if he goes on to win the gold with an ongoing wrist injury that would make him nothing less than superhuman. On the other hand (pardon the pun) if he loses there's an excuse. Can't ever remember Rafa losing just because, unlike Andy, he simply didn't play well enough.
Given the troubles Laura and Delpo have had with wrist injuries it seems to me he'd be nothing short of reckless to play if not fit enough.
Dr Ivo strikes again beating Lopez 7-6(5) 6-2 in the final of Los Cabos. Fairly shocking for Lopez with his big serve to be broken twice in the second set. I assume Karlovic's first round against Monaco will be on Tuesday.
Can't see Andy withdrawing given it's a chance to gain points on Djokovic and apparently Nadal confirmed yesterday he intends to play. Del Potro must be wishing he asked for a wild card.

Jamie D has tweeted today that he's flying to Cincinatti so he clearly expects to meet up with Andy there.
Surely, as has already been said, Andy HAS to play Cinci, having opted out of Toronto. This one is compulsory isn't it and he's used up his one get out of jail free card so would have to be injured to miss it legitimately? Am therefore definitely hoping he WILL be playing.

That is one heck of a challenging draw if Andy is tired. Ah well, perhaps, on the bright side, none of us would be devastated if he went out early and had a few days extra rest - boy does he deserve it

I wonder if Kei will hitch a ride on it too. Not if Rafa has anything to say about it ;)
I'm kinda hoping Andy doesn't kill himself in the tournie. I know he hates to lose, but save yourself for the USO Andy, it's far more important.

As a betting man you'd want your money on Raonic here, it will surely suit one of those who skipped Rio and isn't returning from injury. I really hope he doesn't win it.

Crickey Andy will be emotionally drained. Hope he retains some freshness for Us Open an Davis Cup
Andy indicated in his presser that he has another match to play in 48 hours and Sky Sports have confirmed Andy is playing.
The latest day that Andy could play his first match is Wednesday as that is the last day for secod round matches. Andy has a bye in the first round/

Such a shame Andy has NO chance to enjoy his olympic win or celebrate but straight off to another tournament. He will be emotionally and physically drained and you could tell in the Inverdale interview that he would love to be able to pull out but can't because of missing Totonto. I'm thinking one match which he loses, or wins and then pulls out. Don't mean as a plan - but as an expected result of all his efforts.
And he really needs this in a bid to catch up with Nole who isn't playing.

It's so difficult for the tennis players.....other tournament, getting there as fresh and prepared as possible, no time to celebrate or enjoy the closing ceremony. They work so hard all year round. Hats off to those who played in the Olympics and good luck to Andy who said he had a match on Wednesday. At least leaving by private jet last night helps a little.:big grin::big grin::big grin:

I think Andy missed the right tournament though. There's no doubt both he and Novak value the Olympic Gold far more than a Masters Event these days and with hindsight, I bet wish Novak wishes he'd skipped Toronto instead. But dropping out of Wimbledon early maybe swayed his decision.
I'd predict Andy either losing early or winning it. If he actually wins a couple of rounds, his competitive instinct will take over and he'll want to go all the way.
Sounds like Stan could yet pull out too. I wonder if Steve Johnson could go well on a fast court that should suit his style.
Ferrer has just been knocked out by Benneteau in 3 sets. He is starting to show his age.

oh wow - Wednesday... we'll still be on Mo Farah etc. How can we fit it all in! The tennis players certainly have it tough. Absolutely no rest or time for a break watching the other competitors. I wonder how Andy will do - that must have been draining for him last night. Bet he's going for no 1 position now though.
He is starting to show his age.
Who? Benneteau? He's 34..........
So is Ferrer.
Yes I know......thought it was ironic saying Ferrer was showing HIS age in the circumstances. Battle of the olds

Karlovic and Monaco 3rd on court 4 - the winner will play Andy in round 2.

Andy went on a private jet with Rafa .
Andy was due to practice yesterday on the live stream practice court but didn't due to the rain. He's on the practice schedule twice today, 1.30pm & 6pm but not on the streamed court.

Did Kei go with them? He was in the same boat as Andy after their final went on so late. I'm really interested in how it works at the top, are they all pals in terms of common sense things like travelling together in these situations?

Me too. It would make sense to go together, but then why didn't Jamie wait? Does anyone know if Kim and baby are out there?

Kei tweeted when he arrived in Cincinnati yesterday afternoon whereas according to the press Andy & Rafa left Rio at 3am. I wonder if they went dutch or if Andy paid as a thank you for training in Mallorca. ;)
Watched the end of Reilly Opelka beating Chardy yesterday 11-9 in the third set tie-break. He's amazing to watch at almost 7 foot tall and pencil thin he scampers about the court and has a good touch at the net. His big serve goes without saying.
I think Cinci may be the most televised ATP tournament to date with streaming on 7 courts which should mean it will be possible to watch the doubles matches when Jamie or Dom are playing.
Me too. It would make sense to go together, but then why didn't Jamie wait? Does anyone know if Kim and baby are out there?
It depends how big the Jet is and whilst they might have been able to take Kei, I doubt they could fit his entourage. ;) Having said that I think Andy may have been the only one from his team on the flight as from a photo of Leon Smith at Rio Airport it looked like Shane Annun was on the same flight back to the UK. Assume Matt Little must be joining Andy in Cinci.

Do we have a OOP for tomorrow for Andy's match
It's not out yet Jackie!:)
I really thought both Raffa and Andy would pull out of cinci. I guess if Andy is chasing that number 1 though it's not the time to miss tournaments. Ooh i have to agree; I love petch. Actually had a bit of an embarrassing tennis moment when my other half (to rip me) told petch when he bumped into him at the world tour finals, that he was his girlfriends favourite commentator. How she always says he's the best and makes good points and seems to have more sense. (I disnt find out he'd told petch this til later), he just appeared with petch, who chatted to me about the game and my favourite players and coverage etc. Before signing my program. After he left I asked how Kev has ended up with Him and discovered he'd told petch he was on my dream team of commentators so petch who was walking that way said he'd go and introduce himself to me. I'm still red faced with embarrassment looking back and could throttle the other half!

Nadal says he wishes Olympic tennis was scheduled to allow for players to play all three events. Wants more days added to facilitate that.
He is not down for tomorrow - I assume because matches have been delayed by rain. Nadal is playing.

Andy getting Jamie Delgado to serve to him from the service box. I trust they know the score and it would take a minor miracle for Karlovic to turn his match round especially if he played like he did last night. He was even broken to love which must be incredibly rare and has already saved 2MPs. Dr Ivo needs a break more than Andy.
Andy's practice now ended, he was probably on court for about 50 minutes.

The top seeds are falling like ninepins
Despite what Annabelle Croft and Sky are saying, Coric has had a stuttering year with some disappointing losses. Borna was honest in his interview about it. Pleased for Miles McClagan as he must have been thinking this relationship is not going to last much longer.
Carnage in the bottom half of the draw with Berdych now the highest seed remaining.

And now Kei loses his match against Tomic.
I hope Andy didn't catch Olympicitis, medallists dropping like flies.
Some of what Nadal said in his press conference.
"In one week I went from practicing almost nothing to playing 23 hours in seven days. It's not the ideal situation to come back to competition. It's normal to come back a little slower, but having to come back for the Olympics didn't allow that. Now I pay."
Says he didn't think about retiring today against Coric. He has a little pain "everywhere" but nothing near what it would take to pull out. Will likely take a couple of full days off before hitting the practice court again.

Love Kei and Stan, but not overly surprised or bothered; sandwiched between the Olympics and the USO, Cincy was always going to be flat and anticlimactic.
Bathroom break Raonic strikes again. After losing the second set to Sugita he takes another lengthy one and on his return he follows it up with an MTO. They'd only been on court for 61 minutes.
He's just broken Sugita to love. It's a disgrace, he's a disgrace. :grrr:

Can't stand him!!
Robbie Koenig & Jason Goodall barely spoke during the third set, I think their fury prevented them although diplomatically letting Raonic off the hook by saying it's the rules which allow him to get away with it that need changing.
Cilic (and Andy's ex-coach Bjorkman) has beaten Berdych (and his ex-coach Ivanisevic) in 3 sets. He's the highest seed left in the bottom half.

Here's the Quarter-Final line up:
[1] Murray v Tomic
[4] Raonic v [8]Thiem
[12] Cilic v Coric
Johnson v Dimitrov
It is ridiculous that players are allowed to take 10 minutes or more for a bathroom break, when it is often clearly gamesmanship, whilst they are penalised for taking a few seconds extra to serve! Where is the logic in that? The rules need looking at.

Seems to have suddenly found some confidence and belief. A big serve and a really big forehand are his weapons. Apparently he was very successful on the US College Circuit before turning pro.
I like the fact he lives on Redondo Beach in LA too where I once spent a relaxing afternoon playing in the waves with the kids watching dolphins swim by.
I first noticed Johnson when he won the tournament in Nottingham immediately prior to Wimbledon. I think that was his first ATP title and he seems to have grown in stature since then. It's amazing what an injection of confidence can do.

It seems odd to me that Danny would accept working with Delpo in the first place, as when he agreed he must have know that he spends a lot of time in Argentina. I know. And he must have known that he didn't want to travel there a lot. I would be interested to know if he was approached by dimitrov before dumping Delpo. Making Delpo a nice stop gap for him. Lol

Is this the weakest Masters event there's ever been? I know Paris used to attract some pretty poor turnouts, but this could be even worse. No Djokovic or Federer, a sick Nadal, a knackered Murray and Nishikori, an injury ravaged Wawrinka. Fair play to Cilic for winning it (for someone had to, and at least he went to Rio as well), but it was a pretty poor weak overall.
I actually thought it might be Raonic who would knock Andy out and despite fatigue, thought he would beat Cilic. Maybe he's become more familiar with Raonic's game as they've met several times recently, whereas I dont think the two have met for a while. Haven't watched recording (hate watching knowing Andy lost) but thought, having dragged himself somehow to the final, adrenaline might get him through. Shame, but I believe Cilic has been in good form lately.
Bottom line was that Cilic played well and Andy didn't - he wasn't the same player as in the earlier rounds but hardly surprising. Just needs to top up the batteries.
I completely agree, a recharge a little (very little) rest. A bit of time with his family who are flying in and he'll be off again
