I just woke up, had a wee look at the results and OMG....DAN EVANS!!! Fantastic result! Go Dan!!:cheer::cheer: Also it's Lorenzi for Andy. Match took over 4.5 hours! I watched some of the first set and oh boy, Lorenzi can move!! Chases everything. It must have been a great match. And Ferrer/ Fognini...still going!
Sorry if I have repeated anything already posted! Wrote this through bleary eyes and without having read any earlier posts! Will catch up properly later! Was just so excited!

Can't believe DelPo is almost the same odds as Cilic to win, Cilic blows hot and cold, could still comeback from 2 down, but interesting

Dan (loved that match!!), Heather and Naomi in their respective doubles and Jo in her singles. Have I left anyone out? It seems ages ago since the first match! It's the Delpo honey monster, cmon David

Mixed loyalties here - I'm not sure who I want to win this one. I've always loved Daveed's tenacity - he really has made the most of his talent and I fear that he is on the downward spiral, which I would hate to see. On the other hand, although I have always had reservations about Delpo, I really admire his tenacity in coming back from the injuries that would have made most throw in the towel. Selfishly, I also think that Delpo is a bigger threat to Andy than Daveed. Oh well, may the best man win!!

Bardot
03-09-2016, 19:19
Sousa probably should have won the first set. He had two BPs and made errors on both and then what often happens when serving at 4-5 he gets broken to lose the set. Dimitrov has since rolled through the second set 6-1.

I didn't know where I was with the ferrer Delpo match. Kept changing who I was supporting, I would have liked more from David (for him) maybe to have got it to 4 or 5. I've never been much of a Stan fan but he seemed to congratulate himself on a double by Dan before so that kind of thing really gets my goat. I wanted Dan to win before but now I'm desperate lol

It just makes it easier to focus on British players in their own threads so we can re-read their progress and it makes it easier too for those who weren't able to follow the matches to follow what happened to our guys/gals.

Sorry folks, I included my Dan comment as part of my general singles comment but I did do the more specific Dan talk on his thread. My friend pointed out that the reason I probably kept switching from Delpo to ferrer and back again is because he's in murray's side of the draw. If he wasn't I'd have been on delpos side all the way through lol. As much as I like him and try not to look too far down the tournie I can't help seeing him as a future opponent for Murray.

Nick Kyrgios was in tears after having to withdraw with a hip injury with the score 6-4 4-6 1-6 to Marchenko. Nick was barely able to move in the third set.

According to twitter, McEnroe commentating for ESPN was his usual unsympathetic self calling Nick a disgrace and he should give up tennis if he's not going to put in the effort. He made no allowance for the injury even though it was known coming into the US Open that Nick was struggling with his hip. Who's the disgrace? His lack of respect and ignorance of lower ranked players is well known and was apparent when commentating on Andy's match against Lorenzi. This response from American player Greg Ouellette sums it up.

Certainly was a dramatic match between Nadal and Pouille, looked like Rafa completing the comeback but couldn't quite sustain it and while Pouille tightened up at 6-5 in breaker great winning shot from Lucas, well done! Tsonga now the highest ranked player in Djokovic's half of the draw and faces Nole next, has been finding some form but probably tough ask.

Djokovic's side of the draw has opened up nicely for him whereas Andy still has Stan and Delpo lurking in his. How much luckier can Djoko get?

Whilst Monfils has been playing well would regard Delpo as potentially bigger threat to Andy should they both reach semis. Whilst Monfils has run Djokovic close a few times yet to prevail in 12 meetings.

It is nice that Delpo gets a lot of support though. Wish they would stop asking him how happy he is to back and what is was like not competing. The term asked and answered comes to mind. How long does he have to back for it to stop? Hopefully Stan and Delpo will beat up on each other a bit and when Delpo wins that quarter he'll be tired lol

I agree that Pouille was exhausted after the Nadal match. He's one of my 'picks for the future' so was glad to see him do well, though at the same time gutted he beat Nadal.

I'd love Tsonga to beat Djokovic. Partly because I really like Tsonga as a player but also because the more points Djokovic drops, the greater Murray's chances of reaching the number one spot. When it comes to the Oz open though, I'd love a final between a fully fit Djokovic and Murray - Murray to win obvs. Thereby cementing his position as number one. If he wins the US open against Djokovic this year, the ABM trolls will claim it's due to Djokovic being 'injured'.

I agree. Djokovic has form for suspect MTO's. It can't be coincidence that the MTO came when Kyle had broken him. No sign of problems before or after. Some may call it tactics - I call it gamesmanship.

I've said previously that I think something has been not right with Djokovic this year. There seems to have been a catalogue of reasons. The eye infection in February [Dubai], the tight match in the Davis cup in March where it was suggested he had a shoulder problem, the loss to Vesely at Monte Carlo in April [don't think any physical ailment was suggested as a cause for that], the loss at Wimbledon. During his post Wimbledon match interview he was rubbing at his shoulder as if to imply that was the problem. Then he wins the Rogers Cup only to go out in the first round at the Olympics. After which we are told he had a wrist injury. Coming into the US it's the wrist injury again plus 'personal issues' were to blame for the Wimbledon loss. Next an elbow problem [again].

There has also been his at times very bad tempered behaviour. Though if he has been playing in pain that would be understandable. I really don't know what to make of it all.

It suggests Novak has a touch of the 'yips'. It's possible. Plus might also explain why various arm/wrist/elbow/shoulder problems have been cited by his team. Or of course such problems could be the cause of the so called 'yips'.

7. Treatable Medical Conditions
A. Will the player be likely to play after a medical time out? If the player cannot continue to
play, announce the end of the match, declaring the injured player “retired”.
B. Otherwise, the player may request and receive a one-time 3-minute medical time out for
that condition during the match or warm up. The request should be made by a player to
the referee, or other official.
C. A player with a pre-existing condition, sustained prior to the match, may request and
receive one (1) time out if the condition is aggravated during play.

As farcical as Nole's US Open run has been, TizMurray that is an absurd theory. What incentive could Jo be offered - as a multi-millionaire - to intentionally lose a match against anybody? He's not a lower ranked journeyman desperate for funding. And we know he's injury prone.

Djokovic has just been very, very lucky here. And it's given him an advantage in that he's been afforded more time to get over his niggling physical issues.

That doesn't suddenly guarantee he's going to lift the trophy though. With all due respect to the couple of players he's actually completed matches against so far, Nole has yet to face any stiff competition thus far in terms of his opponents' ranking and/or fitness.

We can look at it the other way though, is Djokovic going to be properly battle hardened by the time he gets to a final? Many Grandslam winners go through a tough match at some point in the run and it puts them in a better place as a result. Look how Andy came out of the Lorenzi match? Novak has played one guy coming off a 6 month break and a youngster suffering on the big stage for the first time. Monfils looks very fit and will offer up a big test one way or the other. If Novak is not right he might just get found out before the final.

The two times Kei has beaten Mr M is when Mr M is completely knackered. He has yet to beat a fresh Murray. The defeat is not something I will worry about. 2004 defo too early for Andy. It was the year he won the Boys Final in New York. Would have also thought it was a tad too early for Rafa but it is a huge amount of time ago.

Yes but Federer was probably in a semi. It as Eurosport that gave the stat.

Thanks Rouges, I didn't know he had entered Beijing; that's wonderful news. Hope Sky is showing it, they have the Japanese one down to show at present.

Where can you find out what tennis Sky are planning to show, ie Japanese ?

It is the first grand slam since 2004 since either Federer, Rafa or Andy were in the semifinals.
Your post should read "neither" Cazza although grammatically incorrect by whoever said it.

Wow, that's pedantic - you sound like my other half, Pabbers! Can you actually use 'neither' when it applies to more than two? I would have thought you would have had to say 'none of' to be grammatically correct. Though I believe Supergran is an English teacher - maybe she can advise us.

Actually I originally had neither and didn't like it so changed it to either - don't like that either. A cold has got to my brain. Maybe it should be

"It is the first grand slam since 2004 since one of Federer, Rafa or Andy were in the semifinals."

I'm sure we all got your meaning, Cazza, no matter what the correct wording should have been! It's certainly an amazing statistic and shows just how dominant the four top players have been for more than a decade.

Has to be that none of rather than since one of.

Or

Internet says: Neither: used before the first of two (or occasionally more) alternatives (the others being introduced by ‘nor’) to indicate that they are each untrue or each does not happen

So

'It is the first grand slam since 2004 that neither Federer, nor Rafa, nor Andy were in the semifinals'

I think

I'll get me coat. :getcoat:

I would love to see Delpo get to WTF again. I saw him in 2009 and then again in 2013. He is absolutely one of my favourite players.

I saw him there in 2013! He is one of my faves too so I was over the moon. Saw him in wimbie this year too :)

I was wondering that too. It's easier for me but it does seem bizarre.

They wouldn't put two 5 set matches on in the evening as they would go on too late, so it would hand an advantage to the day winner for recovery time if they split them. It's probably also to do with not clashing with other sports too with the NFL having started up again.

You were lucky. I haven' seen him since WTF in 2013, although I did see him quite a few times before that, including Wimbledon and Queens.

Yup, they couldn't possibly put 2 men's matches on in the night session. They could put one on, but I guess there are far fewer tennis matches to be played to warrant having 2 sessions in one day. The second men's semi probably won't start until 5 or 5.30 UK time anyway, so it will probably go on into the evening. I am glad they have put both on early though cos we can watch them. It is also fairer for the players.

Actually the use of either rather than neither completely changed the meaning of the post which is why whoever it was (can't remember now) was saying Andy couldn't have been around in 2004.........I rest my case melud!

Oh and yes, as I said, it was grammatically incorrect anyway because there was mention of more than two people :getcoat:

The only advice I have us that either and neither apply to two. e.g. This cocktail could have been ordered by either Angie or Sally and e.g. Neither Hawkeye nor J find it funny.
Not used when more than two.

Congratulations Josephine on your excellent grammar.

I would like Gael to win but I will settle for Nishi or Stan, as long as it isn't Djokovic.

Gael or djoko for me. Nishikori if it has to be. But just not Stan. Really really not Stan

JerryD
09-09-2016, 18:55
It would be easier if the Stan match was first then I he lost if cheer on monfils and if he won I'd cheer on djoko. But as it's second on it's a gamble. So I'm going with hope. Cheering monfils whilst hoping nishikori beats stan.

Allez, allez, allez Gael!!! :cheer::cheer:
I like all players left in, including Nole, but he has enough already.
It would be great if Gael won whole thing - he would so deserve it. I hate how ignorant commentators depict him as an inconsistent buffoon over the years, afraid of hard work - he was world no 7, so pretty consistent to get there, then had near career ending injury. He had every right to enjoy his tennis. Great if he could get a slam!!

I would love a Monfils v Nishikori final and I wouldn't really care who won, although I would be rooting for Gael!

The worst possible combination of commentators on this match for me - Bradnam and Wilander. Wilander speaks such absolute rubbish. For example, Monfils has always said he models his serve on Andy Roddick's and yet Wilander has just said categorically that he doesn't - that it's just pure coincidence that it looks like Roddick's! He would know, of course. The guy's an nightmare.

A double fault from Monfils hands Djoko his second service break - Novak goes 4-0 up. C'mon Gael!!!!
