Isner has just come back from 2 sets down and all the way to win in a 5th set tiebreak, then Tsonga on next at least 3 sets, so Jo dfinitely won't be on till well after midnight

Pretty high quality set and Laura comes from behind in breaker to take it 7-4, come on!

JAMES4578
30-08-2016, 20:42
Going away from Robson from middle of set and poor last service game as Broady takes 2nd 6-3 (3 breaks to 1),hopefully Laura can find better form at start of 3rd but Naomi was putting her under more pressure.

Laura complaining about Naomi taking drinks between points. Naomi takes a drink just before Laura serves at MP. :big grin: All this #BackTheBrits stuff but there's no love lost between these two. ;)

Helen40

What is the issue between those two?

No idea as they certainly haven't been in the same tennis circles. Naomi did mention the heat and cramp in on court interview and remarked on needing drinks.

Only speculating but Laura is an LTA darling whereas Naomi receives no assistance from them after being unfairly treated (in her eyes) by them as a junior.

JAMES4578
01-09-2016, 23:52
Certainly great effort from Naomi but couldn't close 1st set out or take chance in breaker,Radwanska takes bit of topsey turvey TB 11-9 to go set up. Broady went up 2-0 in the 2nd but couldn't sustain it and Aga through 7-6,6-3. Naomi though should take the positives as she really went for it and for the most part was very impressive but couldn't do enough on the key points and Radwanska was able to counteract with her skill and variety.

There's an amazing slog going on between Babos and Halep on court at the moment. One set all and going with serve in the third. Some incredible rallies - only downside is that the noise level from both girls rivals Shriekerova and Screecharenka at their best!

Simona Halep finally won her match against Babos. It was really, really close match and, apart from the screeching, it was a really good advert for women's tennis. It was just a pity that such a close contest finished on a double fault.

Sorry to hear about Heather's loss. Does anyone know why she isn't playing mixed doubles with her partner from Wimbledon? They seemed to gel so well, I would have thought they would have taken the opportunity to rekindle their partnership here.

JAMES4578
03-09-2016, 17:59
It certainly became very good contest between Halep and Babos, Simona battled back in 3rd but Timea possibly tightened up-pity it ended on a double. Pity Heather and Michaella edged out in doubles, not sure why Heather/Henri Kontinen not playing mixed, he lost with Peers in Men's Doubles today.

JAMES4578
05-09-2016, 20:03
Serena the only American left in the singles now, Venus goes down 4-6,6-4 , 7-6 (7-3) to Karolina Pliskova in an entertaining and at times dramatic battle. Venus threatened to run away with it at 5-1 in the 1st before Pliskova made her mark, exchanged a few breaks in the decider and fab saving of mp at 4-5 whilst Venus saved 3 at 5-6 and another one in late challenge in tb before Karolina prevailed. Only perfunctionary handskake though!

I was shocked when I saw that result his morning. So sorry Aga couldn't go any further. Didn't see that match so don't know much about what sort of match it was.

JAMES4578
06-09-2016, 09:48
Pity and disappointing that Aga lost to Konjuh and didn't expect that, however she nearly beat her at Wimbledon and had injury in closing stages of that match. Radwanska though never reached quarters at Flushing Meadows and has gone out in last 16 of three slams this year (did reach semis in Australia).

Alis
06-09-2016, 10:29
Yes, a rather disappointing year for Aga as far as the Majors go. I'd love to see her win one before hanging up her racquet but can't really see it happening.

JAMES4578

Great performance from Pliskova, well done! Looked like Karolina might be letting it slip with one poor service game and then Williams came from 0-3 to 4-3 in breaker but steadied herself and Serena double faulted at the end! The current world no1 didn't have great service day (Kerber will now take the top spot next week).

Alis
09-09-2016, 03:14

Didn't mean to as I needed to catch up with lost sleep, but ended up watching this when I saw how things were going! Serena definitely had a bad hair, sorry, serving day! :hide: And the noise she made was deafening!! But strangely, not always. There were periods when she was quiet. But to end on a double fault, so un-Serena like. Pliskova has an awesome serve, but I hope Angie underlines her new #1 position with a win in the final.

Alis
09-09-2016, 18:10
Well done, Karolina. I was thinking today how difficult it must be for her twin sister, Krystina, who is battling her way through a WTA125K tournament in China with a ranking in the 100s, while her twin is through to the final of the US Open. I believe they both had similar careers in the Juniors, so it just demonstrates how difficult it is to transition from the Juniors to the Seniors - some cope with it better than others. I really don't mind who wins the final. It would be great for Angie to consolidate her number one ranking but it would also be great for Karolina to win her first Major. Good luck to both ladies!

2-1 Kerber

JAMES4578
10-09-2016, 20:53
Think Pliskova was abit tight at the start and Kerber broke whilst she hasn't managed to capitalise on a few chances, Angie up 4-3.

JAMES4578

Too many errors from Karolina right now even if she has double the winners, though know at times she has to go for it and Kerber can make many players doubt themselves with her strong defence.

Certainly good final but pity bit of tension crept into Karolina's game and Angie stepped up at the end-TB would've been exciting even if bit of lottery. Lovely to watch a woman's final when the outcome was by no means a foregone conclusion. Pliskova should be up there with the top 5 before too long, she has a good game, but on balance I am glad Angie won and underlined her #1 ranking...good start for her, cos it's one thing getting to #1 but quite another thing staying there!

Watched a good amount of the final - but missed nearly all the 3rd set which sounded pretty gripping until the end with perhaps nerves getting to Karo in the final game of the match.

Really like Karolina's game - for such heavy groundstrokes, she hits so cleanly, with a nice, languid rhythm - possibly too languid at times! Also liked her variety and net play - she has a nice feel for the ball too - some wonderful instinctive shots either at the net or from the baseline.

Much as I like Angie, I wasn't enjoying her game as much - not as impressive as in the AO final - but she hung in there and took her chances.

I think Karo beat Angie in the final at Cincy recently - so clearly they are 2 of the form players at the moment.

And glad there was a decent women's slam final. Good contrast of styles, bringing out some good tennis - as well as being enjoyably competitive.

Alis

A great match in the Ladies Doubles final. Caroline Garcia served for the match but Lucie and Bethany came back and took it on a final set tie breaker. Another great advert for women's tennis - well done to all the girls involved. JAMES4578

Doubles is such a great game - so fast and skilful. It's such a pity that it isn't shown more on TV because I'm sure, if it was, it would hugely increase in popularity. It's such a shame that a Doubles win is so less well rewarded than a Singles win and that the prestige of the players is so much lower.
