View Full Version : CINCINNATI QTR-FINAL: Andy's into the Semi's, d Tomic 6'4, 6'4

Andy's QF opponent is Bernard Tomic, Australian, ranked #21 (how did he sneak up there?).
Variously called Atomic (for lots of reasons and not always his tennis) or Breakfast at Bernie's (by Brad Gilbert who has a penchant for, erm, unusual name changes) the Australian HAS worked to up his ranking and is now on the edge of the top 20.

However, Andy leads their H2H by 4-0 with all the wins in straight sets - most memorably for many fans on here at Davis Cup in Glasgow last September in the Semi-Final win that put GBR through to the DC Final for the first time in aeons.

Shouldn't be too much trouble for Andy unless he is out of gas. As this is another 1.30 a.m. our time, I won't be watching live.

Is it just me but are there more late night matches for Andy this time round than in previous Cincinnati runs? Maybe it just feels like that after late Olympics. I am a bit concerned for Andy on this one, sometimes tomic can be trying and get under anyone's skin. Whether he's faking injuries or making challenges then saying he didn't. It seems gamesmanship is one of his tactics. Normally Andy can handle this but I imagine it will be tougher when he's tired. Also tomic is having a good run at the moment. I hope I don't regret staying up to watch this one lol

Me too. I can't seem to take to Tomic somehow. He comes over a little surly and graceless somehow.

Hi Sally have you noticed that my Avatar is Andy just after that Dc match Last year.
Looking very tired and slightly bewildered. (With every right to be)
If he can do A Tomic on the third day of solid play to get us through to the DC final,
he should be able to make us happy this time around.

Go Andy smother the Atomic.

Whenever I think of tomic I remember the time he said challange and gestured to challange during a point. His opponent stopped play but the umpire didn't hear or see it. When he gave the point to tomic, the opponent complained. At which point tomic was asked if he challenged and said that he didn't!! Even though it was televised. And afterwards it was never really mentioned again! As id it never happened. It worse than the time he boasted about faking an injury to put an opponent off during the Aussie open

Tomic lost in the first round of Los Cabos last week to Lajovic and reached the third round of Toronto before losing to Anderson. He'd a good grass court season reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon and SF at Queens. His win/loss for the year is 27/19.

Andy likes Bernie, this is what he said about him at Queens this year.

Q. I'm curious to know what you think of Bernie as a person. You have spoken highly of Nick Kyrgios in the past. What do you think of Bernie?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I have always gotten along well with Bernie in the past. He's always fun. Always been very polite and very nice away from the court.

You know, I know it's not easy, you know, growing up kind of in the spotlight. Sometimes you can say things or make some mistakes away from the court. You know, it's not easy dealing with that side of things.

But, I mean, Bernie is really nice. He doesn't ever have a bad word to say about anyone. He doesn't cause any problems like with any of the players at all.

You know, he's maybe said some things, you know, that he's said that he regrets. But, yeah, he never causes any issues with any of the players and is always very polite and happy to have a chat.

You know, he is very, very nice. I mean, you maybe know him better than me, but all of the time I have spent with him he's been very nice.

Well done, Andy  Growing up in the spotlight with a nightmare father from hell, cannot be easy - have always felt sorry for Bernie, Jelena Dokic et al. in this situation. Andy's never quick to judge, and I love that about him.

Haha - it was Rosol, after he shoulder barged him in Munich. Andy really unleashed, and refused to back down when asked about it in the presser :big grin: - also love that he can definitely stand up for himself when needed. Perfect balance

Back on topic, hope Andy makes short work of tonight's match

Andy, unsurprisingly, is always so supportive of the young guys - it is who he is. I remember him saying that he was so appreciative of the established guys who took the time to speak to him when he was a newbie - one of them being Bjorkman. I can't take to Tomic but if Andy gets on with him that's fine - as long as he puts that aside tomorrow.

Great win despite Andy looking as though he was running on fumes, unsurprising if he has a cold. Suspect it was the good old hip flexor that was giving him trouble early on as things appeared to settle down.
Not sure he's going to have enough in the tank mentally and physically to get past Raonic and playing first in different conditions isn't going to help. What's that about? Although if Andy has a cold, he may feel worse in the evening so.........

Great win for Andy, given the circs. I didn't let myself know the score before reading the thread so I was becoming more anxious per line with talk of a cold, clutching lower back and lack of energy. Afraid the years caught up with me and my bed called last night...somehow I was certain of the win so I kept my late night for the semi.

Have to agree though that Andy must be tired and there is so little time before the US open. Then along comes DC.
Since Djoko has dropped 1000 points, Rafa, Kei Fed and Stan have picked up none and Andy will balance out the 600 from last year I half hope he will let this one go-- no chance though, Andy being Andy

JerryD
20-08-2016, 14:58
I am certain it's just stiffness and tiredness. I really don't think Andy would risk the DC or the open. The reality is these guys are so fit what doesn't seem like much time off to us, is plenty for them. He said he took a bigger break after Wimbledon because he knew this time would be busy.

I managed to watch the second set, and whilst I was impressed how Andy played the right shots just when he needed them, I was also concerned about him...he did look so jaded and weary. Reading through this thread has confirmed that everybody else is concerned too and it would appear there was more cause for concern during the first set which I missed than in the second. But how does he do it....he just keeps coming up with a winning game against all the odds...he never ceases to amaze me. I sure am glad though this match didn't have to go to a third set! Am going to try to tough it out later....hope there is no rain to delay things! (or would that be better for Andy or not?). But well done to our champ....he has more than acquitted himself in Cincy. :bravo:

Haven't seen a jot of Cincy yet due to the timings but going to try and stay up for tonight's sémi. Concerned (though not surprised)to read that Andy looks tired, and the back/shoulder trouble is a niggle too. Amazing that he is able to overcome all of this and keep on winning. Do hope he is able to get some recovery time next week and prepare for the USO.
