View Full Version : CINCINNATI 2016, SEMI-FINAL: Andy's into the Final. 6'3, 6'3 over Raonic

An early rematch for Andy and Milos. Will Andy triumph again, as he did so spectacularly 6 weeks ago at Wimbledon? Or will Milos beat Murray a 4th time?
Andy leads the H2H 7'3, winning their last 6 encounters.
First up tonight so another midnight vigil for the dedicated Murray fans!
;)

If Andy was fully fit I would have no doubt that he would win but he was really struggling with his shoulder and his back last night and he has a cold. Add to that the short recovery time and it may be a match too far.

Goodness, was Wimbledon only six weeks ago? Seems like ages........
Very best of luck to Andy!!!
Hope he takes care with the USO just a week away.
All the best Andy ! I might stay up for this as I really REALLY want him to win !!
COME ON!!! :GBflag: :boogie:
Andy himself has clearly stated, regarding Cinci, his wish to gain ranking points to close the gap on that #1 spot, especially given there were no points on offer at the Olympics. I'm sure he knows what he's doing and I wish him every success this evening. Would love to see him win this tournie and the USO. He's still a long way behind Nole. Also think the week between this and the USO is a reasonable amount of recovery time for someone as fit as Andy. Fingers crossed.
Still feel it was his hip flexor bothering him rather than his back but he may have commented and I haven't seen.
Every Morning wake up with another win so happy. Just wishing Andy another one tonight. Won't see this either much happier to wake up with a win Aller Andy:thumbup::thumbup::trophy:

7 p.m. for me PERFECT!!! Too bad this isn't the final.
Can't wait for this :) last night's match was good, though I did think he looked tired. Maybe a little stiff. The top guys are great at finding another level when they need it so I suspect the desire to win a little from reserves will be enough to get him over the finish line :) though I think it will be close xx

Good Luck Andy !!!!! :cheer:
I'm nervous about this one. Saying that, I won't be that gutted if Andy loses as I think a longer rest before the USO would be good in many ways.
All the very best to the only Rio (golden) competitor left standing in Cincy....let's go Andy!!! :mexican:
My take on it is that you've got to be in it to win it. Andy is still in this and could amass 1000 points..........alternatively, he could go out tonight without all those points, rest for a week and then be taken out in the 2nd or 3rd round of the USO by some on fire player who goes out in the next round. So my motto, take the points where and while you can, Andy!
GOOOOOOO ANDEEEEEE!!!

Go for it Andy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOOD LUCK CHAMP!
Raining in Cincy! Play suspended in second women's SF. Hope it dries up before Andy is due on court. He doesn't need a rain interrupted match!
Whatever will be, will be. He has won Queens, Wimbledon and Defended Olympic Gold, not too mention managing to avoid blinding the Queen's daughter. If he runs out of energy tonight so be it.

One extra day ? Think he would rather remind Milos who is boss and pick up the points

difficult.... the downside of winning all the time is that you get little rest of course.
What will be will be. Raonic is tough at the best of time but Andy won't give up! I heard he had a cold so maybe that will have improved. :superman:

Unfortunately work has got in the way and I haven't seen Andy in Cincy, so can't really gauge the comments re his tiredness. But to me it makes no sense to push to the limit for points here. Sorry Mrs P, but if priorities are being made, it's got to be the USO. Andy's slam record is superb, in recent years only early losses have been to Kando and Dimi under mitigating circs, absolutely no reason to think he would go out 2nd or 3rd whoever he faced. I've no doubt Andy's going to be no.1 but due to his and Nole's contrasting situations re the Canada masters, he's not realistically going to do it by the end of the year. If Andy hammers USO and Asian swing, he could look to get no 1 in Aus next year. Hopefully he can win Cincy and power on, but if tired, imo it would be crackers to jeopardise the USO for Cincy - winning the gold was more than worth waiting a little longer for no 1.
Anyway, Andy knows how he feels physically and what he is doing. Good luck Andy :cheer::cheer::cheer:

Might he also like to win (again) something else that Nole hasn't been able to? There are a lot of bitter pills about for Nole to swallow right now :)

Why isn't Mark Petchey commentating? Notice there have been no on court interviews by Sky after Andy's matches too. Is this because of cutbacks or cos of less viewers cos of Olympics.
Robbie Keonig has already written off Andy in this match - am I being unduly biased or is he always such a pain?

About time they bought Raonic up on his toilet breaks. I was at Bercy a couple of years ago and he took 15 minutes after he lost a set against Jack Sock. Very unsporting.
Great return from Raonic.
Andy taking something off his first serve so has to be careful, good hold. 3-1

well done Andy great win over a frustrated Milos.
Brilliant. Raonic is going to get a phobia about Mr M. Mr M tired, can still beat him. I wonder if Raonic is regretting missing Rio now? He is laying down a marker before the US Open isn't he? He is chipping away at Djokovic's lead.......
Andy Butchart - also from Dunblane - has just been promoted to fourth in the 5000 metres in Rio because of disqualifications.
Top 4 seeds at the US Open will be Djokovic, Andy, Wawrinka and Nadal. Raonic will be the 5th seed.
Clean, clinical, efficient but most of all simply BRILLIANT! I can hardly take in all that this man is doing at the minute. What on earth were we all fretting for....we had no need. And tomorrow night (9pm BST) a Sunday night treat of a final!! He's got to win now!! And at roughly the same time as Andy was serving for the match Mo did the double double!! Think Andy apologised again at the handshake at the end, he certainly said something to Dumusois. Usually would just be a handshake. The look was priceless.
:rolleyes:I thought that Andy has a training week next week with Lendl, Hardly a rest!!!
OK but it's not a match so mentally he gets a rest.
But seriously.......why is everyone stressing about him playing this tournie? He clearly has his own objectives but that apart, his matches have been short - 1hour 20mins against Milos. No more than a vigorous work out and arguably better in that he remains match tight/ready. Had they been lengthy 3 set slogs I'd be inclined to agree but they haven't.

I wasn't able to watch the earlier matches this week but before last night I was thinking Andy could do with a rest, but after watching last night I completely agree with your comment. He was so impressive last night and clearly motivated to get the win. Apart from a couple of points, the Raonic match was not physically taxing and Andy is so mentally strong now I don't have any worries about him getting mentally tired either. The Cilic match should be similar so Andy can get the win, then have a good training week next week. Going into USO on a winning streak will be a great feeling

Great news to wake up to. My view is pretty much consistent that Andy needs to win whatever he plays.
That winning creates fear in others and fear and doubt gives him an advantage.
If he's to beat Novak he needs to have the aura that Novak has, to make Novak doubt he can beat him and open up the cracks in his armour.
However after reading Pabbers post and agreeing I then read others and thought maybe he does need a rest etc.
Thankfully Andy wasn't listening he was focuses on his goals and yet again did great!

Not been able to watch these matches, but has been brilliant waking up to see the results! Will be watching the final though
Strikes me another thing to bear in mind is that Nole hasn't got where he has by NOT playing matches/tournaments - I know this year with DC and the Olympics is exceptional for Andy but Nole has long been winning tournaments that Andy hasn't and therefore going deeper and sometimes playing more matches to retain that #1 ranking. Andy has to be able to keep pace with him at the very least.
Raonic has the dubious honour of being the player who features most (3 times) in Andy's 22 match unbroken winning streak.

Raonic has the dubious honour of being the player who features most (3 times) in Andy's 22 match unbroken winning streak.
And that was his worst attempt, as many df as aces, 7 in 9 games!
I was delighted with the emphatic win by an Andy firing on less than all cylinders. Raonic really has come on in leaps and bounds - he showed excellent speed in getting to drop shots. So I was worried beforehand that he might be closing the gap but am relieved to say not a bit of it. Andy has upped his own game.
