Del Potro has been given a Wild Card into the Shanghai Masters.

Carole Bouchard ‏@carole_bouchard 2h2 hours ago (https://twitter.com/carole_bouchard/status/770969070011289600) Shanghai announces a wild card for Del Potro :

That's great news. Though at the start of the season my hope was that he'd win enough to finish top 20. I think that's unlikely now. But it all s ta him up for but year. Maybe he'll be at the wtf in 2017

Though I was sad at delpo's loss he seemed to take it in his massive stride. From his interview ...

Del Potro, as he's done after most of his matches this season, talked about what it's been like to play tennis after enduring four wrist surgeries during the past six years.
“It has been a great season. Trying to do a good comeback after many injuries. This is just a match. I'm so glad to be playing in this tournament,” said del Potro, who made his last Shanghai appearance in 2013, when he lost to Novak Djokovic in the final.
His comeback trail doesn't end in Shanghai, though. Del Potro plans to wrap up his season by playing two more ATP World Tour tournaments, the If Stockholm Open, 17-23 Oct., and the Swiss Indoors Basel, 24-30 Oct.
He'd like to ascend even further in the Emirates ATP Rankings and earn vital momentum for next season. Since 4 Jan., del Potro has hiked 527 spots in the Emirates ATP Rankings to No. 63.
“Hopefully I can be better during the next two tournaments,” he said. “We have great tournaments to play and I'm still having a chance to go up in the rankings and be in better position for the next season.”
He has simple plans for 2017: Continue to improve his ranking and be happy.
“It's not easy when you travel a lot and you spend time away from home and you cannot share moments with your friends, family,” he said. “But I'm so happy doing this. I missed it a lot when I was injured, and I'm looking forward to be on tour for [many] more years.”

Delpo has a WC into Stockholm but will probably have to play quailes in Basel. I hope he gets the Stockholm title. Basel I'm not so sure, with Raffa still trying to get to London and Goffin trying to get to alternate. I'll have to decide who I want to win that one then :)

Sadly Delpo lost in his semi final against milos. Milos was just too solid on serve in a match that only had one break and where Delpo had set points in the second set breaker. Despite his loss Delpo was still taking positives from the week and will be up to 32 in Monday's rankings. He is dues to play acapulco next week, a solid run there could see him move inside the top 30.http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/news/del-potro-delray-beach-2017-reaction-saturday

I often wonder about Delpo, or rather, his level of fitness. It would seem his involvement in matches is on the sporadic side. He doesn't seem able to complete a sustained run of matches. I wonder is he as fit and well as he should be?

"I'll miss you a lot, faithful companion," he wrote on Instagram. "You accompanied me in these almost 10 years, you waited for me with joy after each trip, you protected me, you made happy a whole family and today you go to rest in peace leaving your mark on my heart. Goodbye, Cesar."

This is really sad

“[I was thinking] horrible things. I thought that was the final of my life. I got the fracture in the knee that I never expected to have,” Del Potro said. “After bad days I started believing in my doctors again that I’ll play tennis soon and I think I’m in a good way again to be competitive. After four months, I’m going to be playing a tournament, which is good [recovery] time. But I know how difficult it is to be ready for playing in the big events and holding the top positions in the [ATP] Rankings and I know this way because I had it in the past. But this is my life and I know how to deal with these problems.”

Best of luck to Delpo.

So looking forward to seeing Delpo play again; he has had so many injuries.

patlowe
23-02-2019, 17:36
I am concerned for Delpo. I'm sorry he lost yesterday, but more worrying is the fact his knee was heavily strapped and his movement was compromised; certainly in the first set. Match turned out close in the end. I really hope he has no more setbacks. He doesn't deserve that. He's had his share.

Update on Delpo: he is not going to Acapulco to defend his title as he needs to rest, but he hopes to be at IW. Typical Delpo, he apologised to his fans for not being able to defend his Acapulco title.

karanga
24-02-2019, 13:26
I too am concerned for Delpo and felt sad to read of his defeat to McDonald. Does not sound too good if he had his leg heavily strapped. .

Typical of him to think of his fans. He genuinely appreciates the support he gets from his fans especially those in Argentina..

He's had his share of injuries all through his career and he really does not deserve this especially as he was playing so well in the second half of last year. :taz:

patlowe
27-02-2019, 22:58

Juan del Potro is to have a 4th operation on his knee!
Still hopes to return to the ATP tour and play the Olympics!

This is what he posted on Instagram:
Hey there! I wanted to say hello and tell you I’m currently in Chicago. I’ve been consulting Dr. Jorge Chahla and the news is that tomorrow I’ll undergo another surgery on my knee. We’ve tried conservative therapy but the pain is still there. He knows I want to play tennis again and be able to play the Olympics, so we agreed that surgery should be done as soon as possible.

Of course, these last few weeks weren’t easy for me. Everything’s so hard since my father’s passing. But also, I feel the strength he sends me from above. I had this day in which I woke up and called the doctor. I knew I had to try again.

I hope I can overcome this painful situation. I won’t stop trying. Of course, your messages and best wishes are always welcomed. Thanks for the love. Take care. ❤️
