Oh well that's one I won't be watching

He is the number 2 seed and the 'in form' player - I would have been surprised if he hadn't had the night match. Verdasco v Wawrinka could be interesting.

Afraid this might be the pattern this year for the Wimbledon and Olympic 2016 champion so not a surprise to me, pity he is on after Serena and not on at 12
Just wondering what gamesmanship Rosol will bring to the match this time. Will it be the barging at change of ends? Or will it be the banging of the racquet on the ground when waiting to receive serve? Or will he have thought up something new? Whatever it is, I am sure that Andy will both deal with it and call everyone's attention to it. Should be good.

A friend who is married to a close friend of my son messaged me early in the week. She is working in NYC this week. She asked if Andy was playing and when and how she should get tickets. I messaged her as soon as I knew he was playing Tuesday and explained how she could buy tickets. As she can only go in the evening she was hoping for a night match. So pleased she will see him as she's never been to a tennis tournament before. Messaged the good news earlier.
Might watch some if I wake up in the night.
I am really going to have try very hard and not allow myself to be tempted to watch this! Have an early start on Wed, but I know if I wake up I'll be right in there!

I'm sure that our Muzza will get off to a good start. Hopefully a solid 3 set win to set him up for the fortnight. Go Murray! best of luck

"Olympic Gold Medallist crashes out in US Open first round!!!" Fortunately this headline has already been taken by Monica Puig who has just lost to Saisai Zheng 6-4 6-2. ;)

This is going to be a "no" for me. It's a shame it's not the first night match. I hope Andy wont be on at this time all through the tournament.
SuRe I read an Andy quote fee years back where night matches in NY where his favorite matches anywhere, if Andy's happy playing at night who am I to grumble ;)

Not sure if I can stay up for this so good luck
Going to try heading to bed early.
Can't stay up for this one, got an early start on Wed for work with a full day of meetings and late evening finish to round things off. Grrr. Good luck Andy - and to everyone staying awake!
Will be watching and cheering him on !!!
All the very best of luck, Andy :thumbup::thumbup:

Me too ... then get up at about 2am maybe 2.30. Personally I prefer this to the midnight slot .... getting up at 5.45, I find it hard to stay awake so getting in a few hours sleep first works for me. See all the night owls later.

Will be getting on the sofa to sleep early, setting alarm for 2 a.m. Have to stay downstairs as don't want to disturb supergramps either with the alarm or my enthusiastic support. COME ON ANDY!
Wasn't going to be a problem staying up as I didn't need to be up til 8 tomorrow but all change now and have to be up at 5. So I might have to record it and watch it later :( not great as my sky+ isn't doing a great job of that recently. Missed the Nd of the djoko match. Good luck to Andy even if I can't see it live :)
5Live just played a clip of an interview with Rosol from yesterday and when asked about the Munich incident he refused to answer and said next question. :big grin: Beware a flash Czech bearing a grudge. ;)
Made it... :sleepy:
And me! Perfect timing too. Morning all :sleepy:
Amazing two points to start the match, unfortunately neither for Andy. 0-30
4 points in a row to hold. 1-0

Rosol hitting it big. 2-2
Morning all. First blood to Andy!
Good hold - Andy seems to be getting into his stride.
It feels like in Andy's most recent matches he's had at some point a clash with the umpire, I wonder if he dare with Marija Cicak.
I'm missing sky sports coverage, don't like the way the camera keeps moving during points! Also don't like Mats Wilamder and Bouncy! On the plus side though I do have Eurosport in HD at no extra cost in my TV package.
Big server saves 3SPs. Deuce
4 huge points from Rosol to hold. 5-3
Drat - Rosol holds but you have to say well played Rosol. No dramas, Andy, close it out.
Wey-hey - first set to Andy :yahoo::yahoo:
Comfortable hold for the set. 6-3
Nice steady first set with some good points.

Well done! One set in the bag. Rosol showing why he can be dangerous but hitting enough UEs for Andy to not to be under too much pressure! C'mon Andy!
There's the first set - well played Andy!:dance::dance: Do you think it really is as noisy as it sounds on the TV?
I always find Eurosport 1 to be noisy

To extend that, even though the roof is "open" it still will cover parts of a previously open arena. Wonder how much noisier it now seems with the roof having been built?
Great start to the set. 1-0
Early break in the second - great stuff!
The roof structure does seem to have created an echo according to some players.

Early break. Great stuff from Andy.
That's the second or third time that the umpire has asked the crowd to keep their voices down. Certainly sounds loud on my "no commentary" stream.
I find the noise distracting - it must be hugely distracting for the players. Double break for Andy!
BH twirl smash trick shot. 4-0

This Eurosport player thing keeps lagging behind for me. Wish the match was just on sky.
I'm watching on mute listening to the 5Live commentary where the background noise is minimal. The sound on TV is grating to the ear and that's before Bouncy & Wilander open their mouths.

Think of 5Live as a clairvoyant. ;) 5-2
Second set to Andy :yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:
Big serve for the set. 6-2
Problem with listening to 5Live is that they have to fill dead air. Spoke about Andy losing focus and getting his head together at the end of the set.
Keep the foot down, Andy. I'm looking forward to going back to bed!
Nishikori won the first two sets against Becker today 6-1 6-1 and needlessly lost the next 6-3. Just saying. ;)
Rosol holds to love with big serving. 0-1
Well held, Andy. A nice little kitkat here would go down a treat.

And there's the break, hopefully the match now.

Serving for the match and I'll be back in bed before hubby gets up for work

Fantastic perfomance from Andy. I felt the match was very entertaining and didn't feel like one of those generic 1st round matches despite the score being 1 sided.
Andy applauding Rosol as he leaves court is taking a bit too far. ;)
Andy giving the schedulers a nudge about not being put on Armstrong, hates it.

Pleased Andy got the win. Just watched the recording. The scoreline suggests a resounding win by Andy but I felt Rosol must have set out an array of platters before the match and asked Andy to select the one on which he would like the match to be served up. Felt it was more a case of the L for Lukas rather than the W for Andy. Rosol had double fault strewn games and did no one else find Andy's play very defensive? Having said beforehand that he wasn't going to let Rosol dictate the points, when playing well, that's precisely what Rosol was allowed to do. It was largely UEs that were his downfall. Andy played a couple of great passing shots, a drop shot and a lob but otherwise I felt his game was overly passive. At one point it looked like Lendl was saying something less than happy to Delgado. I'm sure he would have wished Andy to be more aggressive. I know the outcome is a W but against better players I'd have been worried. There again, I'm sure Andy will raise his game round by round and save the best till last :cauldron:

Yes am thinking that's how to look at it even though he could have conserved even more energy with a few more volleys. He did quite a bit of running
Radio Five live did live commentary on the match towards the end of the second set and then the last game of the third set. Afterwards, Russell Fuller claimed he believed Andy to be the favourite because of Novak's injury.

Just watched this morning quickly before knowing the score, I thought Andy started off very passively, hardly hit it during first five games and made Rosol look dangerous. Then I felt he did what he needed against Rosol who was very inconsistent, never needed to get out of third gear. Better to play your best in the last match than the first. Well done Andy, hopefully r2 will also be like this in three (relatively) easy sets, good for Andy not to use to much energy.

Hmmm ...... it's interesting how differently people see things. I thought Andy played an incredibly canny match. He served well, was a brick wall in defence and was aggressive when he needed to be. He mixed it up so well that Rosol had to take chances to have any hope of breaking him - that was why he served so many double faults. In my opinion he played Rosol just as he needed to. That's one of Andy's greatest assets - he tailors his game to suit his opponents and get the win. Undoubtedly, there will be matches when he has to be more aggressive but I don't think this was one of them. Onwards and upwards, Andy!
I didn't watch the match but just read through this thread. I enjoyed all the comments except one which seemed very negative to me. With that score line we should all be very pleased and grateful! Andy knows exactly what he's doing !

Another match I had to miss (clearing my desk in time for DC break is killing my tennis watching last few weeks ) - but pleased with the scoreline. Pretty much the early-round efficiency that I expect from Andy in a tournament he is prioritising; he barely dropped a set on his way to winning Queens and Wimbledon. Ok, Olympics he struggled to be super-efficient, but that was due to the dreadfully slow court - I'm confident that Andy (now he's back with Lendl) will continue to blast through the early rounds. Let's go Andy! :GBflag:

From the middle of first set Andy really controlled matters and Rosol didn't have the game to challenge him,of course he could've been bit more aggressive but didn't really need to be on this occasion and never exactly sticks to the same pattern against every player. Of course stiffer tests lie ahead but sure Murray has a few more gears and was good to see him in confident mode.

my thoughts too James . Andy is so smart on court . Took him a few games to get a read on Rosol , then he put a bit of pressure on him at certain times , and watched him self destruct . Aggressive style , not really in this match , in the beginning anyway , but oh so very smart !!!!

I had 3 hours sleep last night. So worth it. Andy was amazing what a fabulous performance. Such a champion.
Only got to watch some of the recording this morning with my breakfast. But it did seem to me that he had a grip of the match all the way through and there was never going to be another result :) looked humid though!
I shouldn't have been watching any of this match, but of course, woke up to see Andy serving for a 4-0 lead in the second set, and that was that! Couldn't leave it! I thought Andy played a 'never in doubt' match, he looked so secure, esp on service. He's on his way!!!

Great news to wake up to. Working late tomorrow so a 9:30 pm uk time start wd prob be good for me. Can't manage the middle of nights when I've an early drive next morning, being sleep deprived too risky in rush hour traffic. And not recommended when responsible for lots of small people either. So long as the wins keep coming.

Watched my recording earlier. Thought Andy played possum for a while, then once he had worked out what Rosol could do, I felt Andy was generally in control most of the match. You can't stop a very good player playing some great shots which is what Rosol did, but after that first break, was clear there was only one winner and I thought Andy balanced attack and defence pretty well.
The dreadful chatter from the crowd I think is awful - I think it is something about how they have the microphones but it is super annoying. Stupid size for a tennis stadium. No-one at the top can see so they are just there as though for a general social outing!! And so rude all that going in and out in the middle of games. I know that is US Open but I still think it is downright rude.
I agree, the constant noise was incredibly distracting. :grrr: Andy commented on it in his post match interview.
Much prefer the hum of new York to say the morgue of queens
Speaking of Queens, the tournament director is experiencing a culture shock.
Stephen Farrow @StephenJFarrow
Ludicrous noise from crowd on 14 for Albot/Troicki. Not helping Robson/Broady on next court. Steward tells me 'this is New York you know'
Something he'll never need to worry about.
