View Full Version : St Petersburg and Metz 18th - 26th September 2016
Both Raonic and Berdych making a return, berdych after his op and Milos after his withdrawal from the Davis Cup for Canada. It will be interesting to see how they both are, with the finals on the horizon.
With wawrinka playing in st p as us open champion
Theim back in action in Metz after his withdrawal from the US open. Wasn't sure if he would play, as he said he'd played a lot this year, but perhaps he is eying a place in the WTF

Find Thiem great to watch with his creativity but needs to plan his schedule better to achieve his potential, though hopefully will be more wise next season.
Thiem requires an intervention. He's taken a wild card into Chengdu next week which means he'll be playing 6 tournaments in the next 7 weeks. He also often plays doubles like this week with Melzer. :barmy: His place at the tour finals is probably already secure with just a regular schedule given the gap between 8th and 9th place.
St p ... Into the second round
Rosol After beating schwartzman 6-4 6-4. Next opponent wawrinka
Berankis after beating mannerino 7-6 3-6 6-3. Next Bautista Agut
Zverev after beating wild card Karen khackanov 7-6 6-4

Pity Wardy lost in the St Petersburg qualifiers, hope he starts picking up soon
Dom inglot and Henri kontinen in action against Duran and frystenberg in St p men's doubles tomorrow
Pity Wardy lost in the St Petersburg qualifiers, hope he starts picking up soon
Took the words from my keyboard Roy. It is tough for him. Hopefully he'll find his feet soon. At Dom is playing :)
Metz through to the second round
Muller after beating zeballos 7-6 7-5
Benneteau after beating klizan 6-2 6-1
Fleming and lipsky in action in Metz tomorrow
Skupski and skupski also in action there
Almagro is out on METZ after losing in 3 sets to qualifier Gojowczyk 4-6 7-6 3-6
Ramos-Vinolas is out in ST PETERSBURG after losing to qualifier Siderenko.
Dom and kontinen are on court now and starting shortly.
Skupskis were leading 6-3 in the MTB then after a dodgy overrule by the umpire in favour of their opponents they lost the next 7 points and the match 6-1 5-7 6-10.
ST PETERSBURG
Dom and Kontinen go through 6-7 7-6 10-6
Lorenzi is also through to round 2 after defeating qualifier Mischa Zverev 3-6 7-6 6-0. Mischa is still in the doubles with Alexander, they are due to play later their first round match later today.
Flemsky ease Thiem's tough schedule by beating him and Melzer 4-6 7-6(5) 10-8. The Austrians served for the match at 5-4 in the second set.
Did anyone see that doubles? I'd be interested to see in Theim was recovered after the US open. I guess we will get a better sense tomorrow when he is up against the qualifier who beat almagro today. Theim should do better in the singles for being out of the doubles. For someone who says he had played too much tennis before the US, he seems to be in danger of doing the same again.
METZ
Garcia Lopez and Basilashvili through to the second round in the singles.
Monroe and Sitak through in the doubles
Johnny Marray in action in the doubles in ST PETERSBURG tomorrow with Adil Shamasdin against Lorenzi and mannerino. St P is on Eurosport on sky, so should be available on Eurosport Player. 3rd on court 1.
Gutted Fernado Verdasco lost today in ST PETERSBURG to lajovic, last time I checked he was a set up :( probably be an all Serbian encounter in the second round for dusan as I imagine troicki will come through. Victor is also playing doubles with janko tomorrow, after a suitable Rest from both their singles.
Dusty brown came through in METZ against Mathieu 6-4 6-2
METZ - Paire defeated by French qualifier Millot 6-4 6-3 in just over an hour.
ST PETERSBURG through to round 2 ... Troicki, who will play Lajovic in an all Serbian second round encounter, Sousa, kuznetsov. Sadly (for me) janko lost to Youzhny, in two sets thought the second was closer than the first. Youzhny will play Milos in the next round. Tippy is still in the doubles with Troicki. Wildcard Rublev went through at 4-1 in the second set, after taking the first when Kukushkin retired. The other retirement was in the doubles sadly in the Marray match so he is out, leaving Lorenzi and Mannarino to take on Dom and Henri.
I think Lukas may be trolling Andy "no one likes you" Murray.....:big grin:

ST PETERSBURG round two completed matches .. Wawrinka df Rosol 6-3 6-1 Bautista Agut df Berankis 4-6 6-1 7-6
ST PETERSBURG after losing in the singles tippy is also out of the doubles. Tippy & Troicki lost 6-2 6-4 to Begemann & Paes
METZ through to the second round, Herbert, Mahut, Struff Jaziri and Marchenko. Into the second round Theim, Muller and Benneteau.
METZ - Theim. After his injury I was interested to see how Theim would cope and if he was showing any signs of it. He didn't, he moved well, served well with plenty of aces. He didn't face a break point. So perhaps my concern was unwarranted. Something I imagine Berdych isn't to happy about lol

Tougher second set, but broke at 5-5 and was broken back, tie break
Seems to be doing well in the tie break though. Wouldn't have guessed we'd be here when sat down at the end of the first. Looked to be an easy one
Well a turn around in the breaker too!
Didn't see that coming. Youzhny takes the set in the breaker!

youzhny wins 10 minute game to ko the champ Raonic
A close match but well done Youzhny! I've always liked him and it's great to see him working his way back up the rankings.
In three sets and 6-4 in the third and is through to the ST P quarters where he will play Zverev
A close match but well done Youzhny! I've always liked him and it's great to see him working his way back up the rankings.
I have always liked Youzhny too, but after his injury I was cheering for Milos in this one. He said he wanted to take 3rd in the race and I was hoping for that for him.
It is the first top 10 victory for Youzhney since 2014
METZ - Simon through to play Jaziri who defeated qualifier Millot.
Pouille came through all French match against Herbert to line up another all French round against Benneteau.
Goffin is through to play mahut and the last of the quarters is Thiem v Muller

Just like Dom in St Pet, Colin is through to the men's doubles semi final in Metz with Scott Lipsky
Both Brits will be in action in the doubles semis tomorrow.
ST PETERSBURG - Sadly Youzhny's run of big scalps ends today, after his tough win over Raonic he lost to Zverev 6-2 6-2. Zverev goes through to play Berdych in tomorrow's semi final. Berdych was solid on serve, with 6 aces a do my dropping a few points on first serve, beating Lorenzi 6-4 6-3
METZ - Theim is through to his 10th semi final of the year. He will play Simon tomorrow
ST PETERSBURG - Wawrinka defeated Troicki in two sets, the first closer than expected. He is through to play Bautista Agut in tomorrow's semi final

Berdy and Zverev looks to be the most interesting St Petersburg semi, remains to be seen if Stan can hit top form in first tournament since big win though would certainly expect him to reach the final. Surprising Raonic lost early again though happy Alex rather than Youzhny in final as just prefer his game. Hoping Thiem and Goffin can go through in Metz!
I feel for Berdy, it was such a bad time to have an op but seems to have got back I his feet pretty fast. As much as I like Zverev, he's young and has many world tour finals and wins in his future. I'd like to see a Stan Berdy final and Berdy for the win.
As for Metz, I'm a big Simon fan, I don't like his chances but I will be crossing my fingers for him. I'd like a Simon v Goffin final and either for the win.
Collin Fleming is currently in action, he and lipsky lost the first set in a tie break and the second set is just getting underway.

You and I have such similar taste, Jerry. Gillou and Goffin are two of my absolute faves. I would like that final, and as you say, either to win

According to the commentators he didn't actually have an operation. Perhaps it was just a convenient excuse? Can't remember if it happened before the Olympics. Personally I think he has just worn himself out trying to emulate Mr M in the fatherhood stakes. As far as I am aware there is no sign of a baby Berdych.
Berdych out to Zverer 4:6, 4:6

Unfortunately Colin/Lipsky went down 7-6,61 to 3rd seeds Pavic/Venus,Zverev has upset Berdych 6-4,6-4-well done!

Yeah I have now seen that he received if antibiotics in hospital to reduce its infection and postpone the operation. Nadal did sown thing similar, though he only put it off for a short time. I imagine that's all Thomas will be able to do too. I can't see him making the end of the season without having it removed. Especially if he is able to win more and get the place in the world tour finals he wants. I think it is unlikely though.
Zverev did well though. Getting his first win over Thomas and into his third final this year. Still without a title but maybe tomorrow is his turn.

Sadly it looks like we won't get the final we wanted RB. It looked like there was a good chance when Simon served for it in the second set, but Theim took it in the end. Hopefully we will still gat Goffin.

Personally happy Dominic took it 6-3 in the 3rd even if tight match, like Simon too though.
ST PETERSBURG - Wawrinka is through to face Zverev in the final. Stan is unbeaten in 10 matches. Zverev on the other hand is 0-2 in finals. Hoping he can get the win tomorrow.
Dom and Henri have also made it through to the final and play Begemann and Paes tomorrow.
METZ Pouille defeated Goffin and will play Theim in the final.
ST PETERSBURG - Dom and Henri lost the first set but won the second

1st set to Zverev 6-2
ST P. This is the second title of the year for Dom who won one with Nestor in Nottinghsm. For Henri this is his 5th of the year and he won the doubles title in St P in 2015 too. They fought in a close match and saved a match point to come away with the title. However next week Dom will be swapping partners for Chengdu
St P Zverev v Stan. Whilst Stan lost the first set he now has a break in the second at 3-2 and serving. He has massively improved his first serve In percentage and upper his points won on it. He has not faced s break point in this set, unlike the 3 he faced in the first.
ST PETERSBURG - Stan took the second set 6-3 and serves first in the third.
METZ - doubles title won by Peralta ans Zeballos in two sets. The singles is underway and Thiem list the first set to Pouille in a close tie break. The second set has begun.

Looks like Stan well in control now at 3-0 in the 3rd, pity for Zverev after strong start but was always going to be challenge. Not going Thiem's way either at set and 2-4 down unfortunately. Edit Alex has fought back and will serve for match at 6-5, come on! Takes the title, fabulous :clap: Pouille wins Metz in straights though.
St P - great to see Zverev win his first title title on tour! An incredible achievement, fighting back from a break down to take the match in a close third set. After losing in his first couple of finals this is great from him. :bravo::yahoo:

Yes In didn't see that one coming lol
Metz - I was hoping for a final that wasn't to be here, and I then at least hoped for a win for Theim with all the tennis he has played. Though the first set was case Pouille took the second with more ease. Perhaps Theim isn't fully recovered from his exhaustion. Maybe he will see he could do with a break.

Pretty competitive first set won by Pouille with a tie break, second set more one-sided
Well done Zverev! A great fight back - I thought it was all over when Stan went a break up in the final set. I'm sure it will be the first of many titles for Alexander. Well done to Pouille too - he's having a great year.
A reminder of Andy's record against the young whippersnapper winners today. ;) Beat A.Zverev 6-1 6-2 6-3 AO 2016 R1 and beat L.Pouille 6-2 6-1 Rome 2016 SF.
Yep for Pouille it was his first ATP tour title. So congrats to him too

I see Thiem Is playing again this week.
He really is chasing the points, isn't he?
Yeah Theim is playing in Chengdu. Some other guys are playing this week. Berdych and Zverev who played in st p are both playing shenzhen and Goffin who played in Metz is playing there two. A number of these guys are high ranked and could take a week of. Theim is making sure of his place in London I guess, though I'm certain he'll make it. Goffin and Berdych are both still hoping to get there maybe even as alternates. Zverev said he wanted to make top 16 this season for a good AO draw.
