View Full Version : DAVIS CUP 2017, ROUND 1: AWAY to CANADA - fans support thread (NOT tickets)
Sad, I won't manage away ties next year both on the grounds of cost and my dodgy joints - sad:-(
Actually France might be possible. Depends where? Much as I love Paris, being a wuss would have very strong reservations given the current security situation. Will watch what happens.
Well it depends where Canada choose. If its Toronto for example, that is pretty feasible. If its Vancouver of course then its way out of my price range and holiday availability!

could it have gone much worse? just told hubby I think his money is safe next year LOL
Australian winner travels to Canada the next day, wouldn't blame him in the slightest if the second part of that statement is given a miss
Well, that's me out then :crying: (yes, I'm still here, I waited!) If it was Toronto it's not such a long flight (about 5 hours I think), but if it's the west coast, 11 hours. It's the expense as well though. Gutting to have the chance of a home tie with drawing Canada and then the lot meaning it's away ...
It would be interesting to visit Canada to see where some of my ancestors lived but February's not the time of year for that!
The pain! Pretty sure it's too late notice for me to be able to afford Canada away. Toronto isn't too bad but Vancouver way would be no. I had my fingers and toes crossed for Italy or Germany. They would have to end up in the other half.

Oh shame, that is me out as well, I am hoping to go to Canada in 2017 but not February !!
When we win (lol) at least the next round will only be in France (most likely), we can drive there. Maybe not win in France but at least get to see some Davis Cup live next year. I'm obviously nuts though as I'm now wondering what I could go without in order to go to Canada. The answer is I'd probably have to sell my car so I don't think that's an option lol.

Return flights to Toronto coming up around £330.
Out Wed 1st, Back o'night Tue 7th 20.10, eta LHR 11.15am on Wed 8th.
From Toronto there might need to be an internal flight to another city.
BUT - how many Canadian cities will have an available indoor facility for playing Davis Cup Tennis?

Yeah I though I could do it if it was Toronto. I was saying this to yellowlivi as ate on Sunday. But as it looks like heavily Vancouver and internal flight seems highly likely and that's where my money starts to run low. My friend moved from Vancouver recently because she found the winters too cold. Couldn't she have waited a few years.

I make it 2 in the last 6 years with Vancouver their preferred option in Winter/Spring
Scotiabank Centre, Halifax
Thunderbird Sports Centre, Vancouver
The trouble with outside of Europe for folks like me is travel insurance goes through the roof. So I can say I definitely won't be going to Canada.
Unfortunately a definite no from me:-(

Flights to Vancouver from Gatwick approx. £380 at the moment with 1 change at either Calgary or Toronto.
I suddenly realised, I think I've got a cousin either in or around the Vancouver area. But, I'm not in contact with her (though I'm in contact with her mum). If they choose Vancouver, I could contact the mum (who is also my cousin) and see if I can stay there.

It would make more sense as for players flying in from AO it would cut the journey down by 4/5 hours. Probably cheaper to train it to Gatwick and go from there Roy. Are you thinking of going?

If possible, I am considering it, need to resolve some issues first though. Have messaged my neighbour Mark who has been on last three DC trips abroad, he is in China at present, been to last 8, not missed one since San Diego
Whilst it is a more expensive flight, Vancouver and it's surrounds does seem worth. I remember jealously looking at all my my friend's photos when she came back. Great mountains and wildlife. Easily fill a week with 3 days of tennis too. It will be incredible.

To Vancouver GLA via LHR approx £530 but time from GLA may mean I would have to add 1 hotel night there. A lot of money for a few days - a mass meet up in eg Birmingham definitely cheaper.
No way I can go.

As far as I can recall there wasn't much uptake on the LTA packages (via Traveleads) recently with many choosing to organise independently, mind that for the Naples trip they weren't exactly quick off the mark and many of the hotels were booked by the time they organised. Many made their hotel bookings at least for Ghent (before officially confirmed) far in advance. In any case defintely won't be making a Canadian trip myself but hope those who do make it have a great time, you should be able to get stuff sorted in due course.

But they were Europe. North America is bit different. The San Diego trip was organised by Traveleads which was really helpful so they should show an interest in getting fans to Canada.
I've emailed my cousin and I've asked her if it is okay for me and one other person from the group, who is interested in going to the tie, to stay with her daughter (and family) in Canada. Hopefully, she might agree.
I would love to go to Vancouver, but never planned on going in February. I keep promising my cousins in Toronto that I will make a return visit soon, but again had not planned on it being February. Far too cold! I can probably get a week off work but I think Vancouver is just beyond me - cost wise, and if I'm going over to the west coast I want to do the whole Rockies thing, but certainly not in winter. Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal or Halifax all more feasible for a week from Scotland, flights seem reasonable at the moment. But if they don't announce till mid November where the tie is being held, then I imagine the cost of flights and hotels will have gone up by then. I might do a few hotel bookings that can be cancelled just in case.
Realistically, think its going to be cheering from home this time and praying that France beat Japan so that we can all have a nice straightforward trip in early April :) Obviously assuming we can beat Canada......

You echo my feelings on this re February, Jan. Indeed, I am usually heading for a week of sun in the Canaries around Jan/Feb to ease the Scottish winter! I am waiting for location announcement before I would book anything - but cost and cold weather are not tempting. Also hope if we beat Canada that France beat Japan as a trip to Japan has never been on my wish list.

I have done this! It was a hard 3 hour+ slog but so rewarding to say we had actually climbed it rather than getting the cable car! I would imagine it will be covered in snow in early feb though and proably used for skiing. There is also the Capilano suspension bridge nearby which is a pedestrian bridge across a very high gorge ... I was clinging on for dear life! The park in Vancouver is also lovely for a cycle round (maybe not if snowy) or a walk. It's a lovely city but just too far and expensive for a long weekend for me. It's an 11 hour flight so would need at least a week there I would say.
It would be great to see some forummers at the tie. Hope some of you 'maybes' manage to get there.

If it is Vancouver I will be going because my husband lives there and has a condo downtown. So that would work really well for me. Also it's freezing cold in Toronto in February but it's much milder in Vancouver (they hardly ever get snow, just rain).
If it's anywhere else in Canada - Calgary for example I will still go because this is my dream tie - both my teams! Can't wait. But so many media people are saying Andy won't be playing and that's kinda disappointing. However we'll see.

There are lots of venues in Van. - all the indoor Olympic venues for starters. My husband lives right next to the Rogers Arena near BC Place (BC Place is much too big - that's where they had the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies). Rogers Arena hosts the Vancouver Canucks hockey team. That may be good - and really ideal for me in particular.

The last 4 DC ties in Vancouver (Feb/Apr) have all been in the Thunderbird 5/6k against France Spain Italy and Japan, the last 4 Sept ties have been in Toronto Montreal and Halifax(last2). As you say there are a number of larger venues in Vancouver, Rodgers says 18k, even bigger then the Coliseum. If larger venues are considered, there are of course a number of hockey venues across Canada including the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, which would be a preferred location for us being much easier (and cheaper) to get to.
Envious how many good indoor sports venues you have in Canada!

The crowd was dismal in Halifax. All you could see were blue seats. Too bad really. If not many Brits make the trip a smaller venue would be much more appropriate coz all those empty seats look awful. Canadian tennis fans seem to be a small minority outside of Toronto/Montreal.

Would obviously suit away fans but somewhat unrealistic, sure associations would be subject to cancellation fees if the venue was not needed. Having said that delays frustrating for trips such as Canada, though not going myself anyway.

That was my thinking- would be nice but impractical. Big stadia need to be booked months in advance- to do so on a 'maybe' would be very pricey if it had to be cancelled. Whilst our LTA could probably afford it- though not best use of their money- I think it would be a strain on less well off national associations.

Loads. We have a great new facility in St. Catharines (my town) opened two years ago. It hosts concerts, hockey games, etc. Toronto itself has many venues like Air Canada Centre (hosts Maple Leafs hockey, Raptors basketball and concerts), Skydome for the Blue Jays baseball, but I honestly don't think they'll pick Toronto as the destination.

Not much longer than necessary - not sure I can cope with below zero for too long - and can't skate or ski.
Yes, stay together (if I go)
If there are very few of us going, then as Roy and I both suggested earlier in the thread, sharing an AirBnB would be a great idea.
However, I'm looking to get booked up as soon as possible so would need firm assurances that if I were to book for us that I would get my money back!
An online friend of mine said that he has family in Ottawa, and that it is a lovely place with plenty to see and do, even in February when temperatures range from very to extremely cold! As Linda said a few posts ago, in the winter, the canal freezes up, and many people use it to skate to work!

Ottawa is a lovely city. Not too big like Toronto and easy to get around. Lots to see - Parliament, etc. Great shopping too. I'll be driving my car so if anyone needs a lift anywhere let me know. The only thing is it gets REALLY COLD in February so bring your woollies.
I would love to go, definitely considering it. Why did they have to make it Ottawa? It makes it SO tempting - when I thought it was Vancouver I had just resigned myself to not going. But Ottawa is pretty accessible....... And I've been before, many moons ago. And if I fly to Toronto I could tag on a couple of days to visit my cousins. Now trying to justify spending the money to myself! Off to check flights and work diary to see how feasible it really is.

Hi all, sneaking on here whilst at work.
I'm still considering it as I really want to go but have not had a chance to look at anything by way of flights or accommodation. Was away with work the last two days, got home at 10pm last night and had a power cut at 1030. Happy days.
I'm skint at the moment having just got the keys for my new house on Friday and not having sold my old house yet all my savings have gone! Would need to borrow/scrounge the cash to go so would want it to be cheap. Not not really interested in sharing a room but don't mind sharing a bathroom though.
If it was £150/£200 for a week that would be top notch.
Hawkeye - have you looked at flights yet? If so what's it looking like? Would it need to be via London?
I would need to go via Heathrow.
Hawkeye - have you looked at flights yet? If so what's it looking like? Would it need to be via London? At the moment it's looking like KLM via Amsterdam. About £700 for flights and hotels but I think the AirBnB option will reduce that a fair bit if we can get enough interest.

At the moment it's looking like KLM via Amsterdam. About £700 for flights and hotels but I think the AirBnB option will reduce that a fair bit if we can get enough interest.
Looking on Skyscanner (picked outbound on 31 Jan inbound 7 Feb) there are flights from Edinburgh via Newark (11 hrs 58 total) and back overnight via Toronto and Dublin (12 hrs 20 mins) for around £544. Going the same way a day later but same return date is £505. Reasonable flight times.
Not sure how that compares to the KLM flights you were looking at.
I'm trying to avoid changing in the States as that means having to sort out an extra visa.
I'm looking at 31st to 7th, Aberdeen>Amsterdam>Toronto>Ottawa>Toronto>Amsterdam>Aberdeen 14hrs out, 13 hrs back for £461. Reasonable flight times too.

I'm going to be sensible and say I am not going. I would probably need to fly back on the Sunday night - got a meeting on Tuesday - and there is a flight about 9.30pm but of course that option pushes the price up, and already the flights are a bit more than I was hoping! So reluctantly I will decline this one. You will all have a fabulous time, and I will be insanely jealous.

So, to sum up, is it me, Roy +1, SG, Tinawatt and Linda? SG, can you contact Howdie? Despite all my efforts she has never given me her phone number...

I have no intention of missing the next one (without wishing to jinx this one!) and I am sure those making the trip will give sterling support and have a fab time although I will have a terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach like I did when I had to watch the tie V Japan at home which I couldn't go to because of crap going on at work.

Well I am neutral and supporting both. When do your tix go on sale?
Sally has let the LTA know we have people looking to go, and as we are an approved British Tennis supporters group we will be asked to let them know how many we want, and then they will decide how many we get, so there won't be a sale as such. Again, given we have so few going I'd be very surprised if we don't get all that we request, given that Team GB are entitled to 10% of the tickets. With it looking like it's only me, SG, Linda, Roy+1 and you and your daughter that's only 7.

Not sure of your circs, Tina but Mr P and I have an annual travel insurance with Columbus Direct (online) which is about £70 for the 2 of us. Last year we had to add going outside Europe but I think it was still only about £90. Generally an annual insurance is good value even if you only make a couple of trips.
I have renewed my annual insurance today. To stay with Europe only would have been £26; for worldwide it was £62.

After months of disarray, it is now mandatory for “visa-exempt foreign nationals”, including British travellers, who are flying to or through Canada to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).
The eTA mirrors the US “Esta” programme, though with less onerous demands for information, and validity of five years, rather than two.
As with the Esta scheme, it has attracted online scammers who set up websites designed to look like the official portal. One Belize-based organisation is charging £80 for a process that should cost just C$7 (£4.20). The only legitimate site is canada.ca/eTA.
The scheme began in the summer of 2015 and was due to become obligatory from 15 March 2016. However, issues with IT forced the authorities to postpone the scheme until after the summer.
The government says: “The eTA requirement allows Canada to check that travellers are admissible before they board their flight, preventing those who are inadmissible from travelling to Canada in the first place.”
I think Guadeloupe will always be a dream. I think it would be either Lille or Paris. I can't see Japan beating the French, unless none of the top French players turn up. But, I didn't expect Croatia beat USA last July.
Didn't they host a tie in Guadeloupe last year? There's nothing stopping them doing that again.
It was earlier this year, they played in Guadeloupe against Canada.

I had another of those weird dreams, last night. We were all sitting in a coach and going down a country road. Leon Smith was driving it. Sallydaisy kept walking along the middle, tearing up the Davis Cup tickets. We all had blue t-shirts, which were folded on our laps. I lifted up mine and found it was blank. Only saw this post yesterday, don't know how i missed it, I am on the same flights hotel either Hampton or Courtyard Marriott east, not decided yet, I must have done well on the flight £478 through omegaflightstore.com
That's lovely Roy.At least I'll know someone on the flight and have company getting from airport in Canada. Will John be coming? I will pm you nearer our leaving date.
The LTA have sent me an email saying how much I can buy DC tickets for. If they were to pay for me to go over and support the team, I wouldn't say no.

John is planning to get the same flight but hasn't booked yet
The time is better than Vancouver would have been but still likely to finish well after midnight GMT.
Midnight finish???? We could be well blotto'ed by then.
I'm up for it Stell.

I am flying from Gatwick on 1st Feb and returning on 7th Feb. I am staying at the Capital Hill Hotel.
Where would you fancy going, jagmad? I've already looked up hotels that also have conference rooms and there are a few of them. But, I don't know if they would agree to just the two of us turning up.

You 2 could always just book a hotel room & watch in there with a bottle of plonk.
My favourite Christmas plonk is Baileys original Irish cream liqueur. Other times it would be Plaza Centro prosecco.
I wouldn't want to book a hotel room and later find out the BBC would only be showing it on their website, like they did when we played the French.
Just spoke to Stirling Uni's Jamie at the football in Ayr, they are taking 30 of the Barmy Army.
Do they get their tickets free or subsidised as the 'formal' support group?

That's good news, never doubted they would be there. Looking forward to them leading us all in loud vocal support.

Yes we will be screaming in Canada, we do have to win first and so do France but we have the date 7th-9th April and hopefully if we both get through they won't choose Guadeloupe
