Delpo was given a WC into Shanghai after getting to the final in 2013.

Thiem has withdrawn from Shanghai which might have made his place at the O2 slightly more vulnerable but then Berdych went and flopped against Muller in Tokyo although he seemed to be struggling physically.

I think theim's withdrawal was coming, he has played so much tennis in recent weeks and then lost so early to Zverev. I imagine he is hoping to take a break and come back strong in Euro indoors before the wtf

Well if he doesn't show up and Andy win's both this week and then Shanghai, the ATP Race Gap reduces to 555 points and a Win in Vienna could reduce it to 55 before Paris

I did put on another thread I would it would be a good idea for Thiem to withdraw and then make a push in Europe. He will want to make a good showing at the tournament in Vienna.

"...trip to Asia has come to and end...went to see a doctor and he recommended I not play shaghai...Had a bad cold, was febrile almost every night and my knee is still not fit. To cancel one of the super 9 tournaments is really tough but I need to recover to play good in the tournaments to come...I hope to come back fit and strong in Vienna..."

Only the top 8 seeds got a bye here.

I was really happy that tsonga and Mischa Zverev went through but disappointed for Youzhney. I can't believe two of my faves, Goffin and Delpo have to face each other so early in the tournie. But as much as I'd like to see Goffin as London alternate, I'll be cheering for Delpo.

Yes there were some big mistakes from Novak but not as many as from fognini. 7 doubles from him. Though a nervy performance from djoko with a high number of unforced and 4 doubles. I think Fabio made it easy for him despite a couple of dodgy points and dodgy games. I imagine the next round opponent won't make it so easy.

JerryD
11-10-2016, 14:22
As much as I like Goffin I was hoping for a Delpo win but it seems he is feeling good regardless. What he said about the match is below.

“He's playing great. He made finals last week. He's so fast on the baseline. I think he's a great player to play. But anyways, I was close to winning. I played a good match,” del Potro said of Goffin. “For me, it has been a great season. Trying to do a good comeback after many injuries. This is just a match. I'm so glad to be playing in this tournament.”

More disappointing for me was ferrer's loss to Lopez. I felt like he was playing better tennis last week so I really expected him to come through this one. Happy with the wins from Simon and Tsonga.

Best result of the day for me personally was A. Zverev's victory over cilic. H has been playing so well I was sure he could get the win but still so happy he did. With the win from Goffin and cilic now out Goffin could move back into 10th in the race.

Kyrgios not fully engaged to say the least. Been told by the umpire "you can't play like that, it's not professional" after just gently hitting his serve over the net on BP and walking to his chair before Mischa Zverev even hit the return. I think Zverev complaining to the umpire that Nick is playing too quick when serving has annoyed him. I hope he gets it together as this could be his big chance to finally play Djokovic.

I've been on the fence for a while about him. I've been prepared to overlook his idiosyncracies because when he's focused, he could be a serious contender. But the damage that sort of behaviour could do to the reputation of the ATP tour, and that potential sponsors and spectators will think seriously about not parting with money to a sport that condones that sort of behaviour, the ATP MUST take a serious stand against him. It's indefensible.

Nick was shocking. It's madness because it was on Sunday I was saying that he seemed to be trying harder and maybe he was putting his old ways behind him. Then there was the press conference where he said he was bored in his last match. So I wasn't impressed. Today absolutely took the biscuit though.

After a few dodgy points and one where he started to walk to the chair during the point the umpire decided to have a word. The umpire said "Nick you can't play like that ok" when Nick started complaining back and gesturing to his opponent, the umpire said "it's just not professional. I'm not saying he doesn't like it...it's a professional tournament we have to have professional play" kygrios responded by saying that's how he wanted to play and "I play however the (bleep) I want to play" he made no defence. He continued with dodgy bouts of play and bad language until he was given a warning for obscenity. He continued to roll his serves in and pick fights with the umpire throughout the second set. At one point saying to the umpire "can you call time so I can finish this match and go home"

As Zverev was serving for the match and Nick had just tanked another serve, a crowd member shouted out "respect the game, respect the person" Nick responded by arguing with the crowd member. Telling him to come here and play. Then "sit down, shut up and watch". The umpire pleaded with Nick, when he should have been harsh and given him a point deduction. Within a few points it was over and Nick got his wish, to walk off court, though it was to the booing of the crowd.

In his press conference he initially made no apology. He said he "tapped out abit" he also said he didn't understand the fans shouting out as they don't have to watch and he "doesn't owe them anything". He also said he "couldn't care less" about making the WTF. Later on Twitter he did issue an apology. Though not a very good one. Perhaps he should have apogee D to his opponent and to the crowd, who he does owe something too. Their money for seats and the television rights for all the people who watch at home pay the $30,000 prize money he got for teaching this round. Also as many players have said in the past, if nobody watched tennis then players wouldn't be able to do it as a job!

All in poor from Nick. I hope they cut his prize money. Maybe give it as refunds to the people who paid to see the match, to the people who bet on the match and to his opponent who did a great job of coping with it.

JerryD
12-10-2016, 18:16
The Raffa match was a surprise, he didn't play great in the first set but was much better in the second. Troicki played the match of his life with high percentages, lots of winners and low errors. Nadal did say that he knows where he went wrong. That he needs to be able to put more pressure on his opponents and cause them pain with the forehand. He also said he needed to run more and get more power in his legs. Raffa did get a warning (though it an official one) for coaching as Damien said that he saw nadal's coach gesture and speak to him. Raffa's response was that he didn't get his attention so he was unaware of anything.

I thought Kyle did a great job even though he didn't get the win, Stan played really well. On the bright side wins for Murray, Goffin and Simon went through :)

Berdy did say last week that he was feeling tired in the match lost. He said that he wasn't feeling great in his body. I hope it is just getting back into it after the appendicitis and not that it is coming back. Maybe he can use the off season to have it removed.

Looking increasingly like an Andy v Nole final

Raonic seems to have lost the consistency he was showing in the first half of the year when he was continually reaching the sharp end of tournaments and losing only to higher ranked players. It's happened ever since the Wimbledon final or more specifically working with McEnroe. Scarred for life. ;)

I had to go out shortly after Andy's match, but before I left, I checked in to see how the Gael/David match was progressing. Gael was a set and a break up, so I left thinking that was nice, an Andy/Gael match tomorrow. Simply couldn't believe my eyes when I got back to find it's Goffin tomorrow! He has been quite an escape artist this week. You would think I would have learned by now that in sport it's not over till it's over! Also quite a shock to see Stan out too. What a strange tournament this year! No matter, looking forward to Andy and David tomorrow.

The concern I have about Kyrgios is that if a player was deliberately losing matches as part of a betting scam then they would probably get a significant ban (potentially lifetime). But throwing matches in the way he does is apparently not such a big issue, even though there are huge gambling ramifications. If he does it again then the punishment needs to be much greater.

Suppose always upsets and Raonic already qualified for WTF, some comeback from Sock though! Maybe wasn't Stan best day but consistency not always his forte, good win for Simon though!

Monfils playing in Stockholm, think the other two have an off week next week. So it's not like they are in a hurry to get somewhere. Perhaps they've bettered their points from last year. It just shows how even the men's tour is, there are very few players that win by not playing somewhere near their best tennis.

If a Challenger level player lost the way Kyrgios did the TIU would be all over it.

I think a player who had been bribed to throw a match would do it a little more subtly than Kyrgios did yesterday!

I think a player who had been bribed to throw a match would do it a little more subtly than Kyrgios did yesterday!

I agree, whilst I am suspicious of all sorts of things Kyrgios strikes me as a toddler (albeit a large one), having a tantrum - stamping his foot and screaming "I am not doing that, and you can't make me.....". He will grow out of it at some point, or give up the game. If people are daft enough to bet on someone so volatile, then more fool them.

Agree with Teresa and Alis, but the fact he remains he was a hot favourite to beat Zverev and a lot of people would have lost money as a result of his attitude. Anyone aware of which side of the bed Nick had woken up on could've made a fortune. Although I'm not sure Nick is really that aware of which side of the bed he wakes up on!!

Nole currently an early break down against Mischa Zverev.

RosieBear
14-10-2016, 07:56
Mischa takes the first set 6-3. So much of Novak's dominance was based his opponents fearing him and handing him wins. I know Mischa hasn't won yet, but there is definitely a change in how opponents view Novak now. I give big credit to Jiri Vesely - he was the first to play the ball rather than the aura/rep and show it can be done.

For the sake of Andy's no 1 bid - C'mon Mischa!!

Djokovic was a break up in the second set but then immediately broken back. He's playing a completely risk free type of tennis (just putting it back in play, we're seeing long rallies of little interest) with a very odd demeanour (smiling a lot at poor shots). Really doesn't seem right in himself at all.

I should imagine Andy will be happy with that result, Simon must feel almost defeated before he even steps on court with him such is the head to head (loved Simon's tweet when he did finally beat Andy even if it was undoubtedly injury assisted). I'd be surprised if the Frenchmen was the first man to take a set off Andy in China this year.

I just been texting this very same thing to my mum and brother. Outrageous double standards. And very odd behaviour. I get racquet smashing because it's the object in your hand that you feel you can blame for an error in your frustration and it can be a natural instinct to slam something down when frustrated even if it's just banging your pen down on the desk. The whole slowing down of the game, that took hold as a response to the wham bam of the 90s, has swung ridiculously too far the other way. During today's final I heard Robbie Koenig say that Rafa is calling for even heavier balls to slow things down even more, claiming it would be better for players' bodies. Koenig said he didn't understand Rafa's logic at all. The most forgiving surface of all is grass - short points and easy on the joints/body - but I don't hear Rafa calling for a masters to be held on that surface. Funny that. Outrageous that there's no grass masters (not just because Andy would clean up ;)).

Alis
16-10-2016, 19:54
I find it really interesting that the slowest hard court is now Paris. I remember a few years ago the courts at Paris were lightning fast and produced some extremely entertaining tennis. Players had to adapt their normal game to cope with the courts. The commentators at the time were saying how nice it was to have a variety of speeds and they should vary the surface speed at some of the other tournaments. The serve and volley players were delighted. Of course, many of the clay court players - including Rafa - complained bitterly about the speed and the result was that the next year they slowed it right down again. A real pity, I think.
