View Full Version : BEIJING 2016, Quarter-Final: Andy v Kyle Edmund Friday 10.00 am approx

An all British Quarter-Final ... a very rare event!!!

Andy came through comfortably in R2 against Kuznetsov and next play compatriot, and fellow Davis Cup player, Kyle Edmund in the Quarter-Final on Friday 7th October.

Andy leads the H2H by 1-0 with their only meeting being at Queens Club earlier this year.
Muzzah won 6'4, 3'6, 6'1; it's always tough playing someone you know well.
How will Kyle cope with their encounter on Friday?

Andy should win it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it went to three sets.

Zverev looked very good in the bit of his match against Sock which I saw before Andy came on. Not impressed with Sky's coverage so far. I know there are women's matches on at the same time which they will not cover but both channels seem to be covering the same men's matches while apparently no cameras on other courts.

I have to agree with you there anor about Sky, coverage terrible and I don't see the logic in having two channels playing the same sport..

Yes I don't understand that either. Originally they said they were covering the Japan Open. In fact when I queried it in the middle of September, I was told they would not be covering the China Open. What is the point of it I wonder. They could show the Japan Open on Sports Mix or, indeed, one of the other courts which has had some very good men's matches - Kyle v Bautista Agut and Ferrer v Fognini. Cheap television for them.

Great to have another Brit opponent for Andy again. He went for years without one after Tim retired but now it's happening again. Good signs for British men's game

I am really looking forward to this match on Friday. It's hard though as there can only be one winner. I'm hoping for 3 sets but I don't think it's likely. Here is what Murray had to say about playing Kyle...

"[On] the day of the match, it's always a little bit uncomfortable," said Murray about playing against his Davis Cup teammate, "because normally when you see your friends and stuff in the locker room, you have a chat, joke around a bit. But on match days, it always tends to be a little bit more serious.
"Once you get out on the court and start competing, it's fine. After the match, again, it's always fine. But it's just sort of the couple hours before when you see each other in the locker room, it can be a little bit uncomfortable."

It takes me back to watching Andy beat Tim for the first time and you knew it was the changing of the guard. Kyle has a way to go yet to catch up with Andy but, at some point (hopefully not too soon though), that day will come and things will have gone full circle.

I am curious - were you (and the others who were around at that time), happy or sad when that happened? I myself will be in a grump if Kyle wins tomorrow, simply because Mr M needs the points more on his journey to No 1.

I was very happy as was already a big fan of Andy. Obviously liked Tim and supported him but I never had the passion I had for my other favourites through the years. When Andy appeared I knew that there would be the passion....can't explain it but I'm sure others will fully understand.:excited: As for Kyle, I really like him and do support him but wouldn't want him to beat Andy. His day will come but not yet.:big grin::GBsmile:

I was working at Wimbledon in '96 when Henman first made his breakthrough - I sat through the entire Kafelnikov match. But whilst he was by far and away the best male British tennis player we had produced in god knows how long, we always knew his limitations. I think he was actually at his peak during a pretty weak period of men's tennis (post Sampras, pre Federer), yet he couldn't get past a semi at a Grandslam. You look at some of the GS winners in that period and you see some pretty random names (Johanssen, Gaudio etc). He was unlucky in 2001 when the rain saved Ivanisevic, but apart from that he always came up short.

As soon as Andy appeared you realised this was a different talent entirely. I had no issues with him defeating Tim who by then was past his peak anyway.

Andy and Tim were often playing against each other at one time. It was before we had all this live streaming and you had to follow by the live scores . Nail biting, we have so few top British players and seems such a waste when they play each other.

And what about when Chris Bailey had match point against Gorna in 1993? :nailbiter::nailbiter::nailbiter: Yes times changed when Andy came along, which was an amazing bonus, but have supported British tennis my whole life, and always will, not just the 'glory years'.

And people are quick to rip the p out of Tim, after Andy came along, but Tim had an excellent career, closely comparable in stats to Ferrer, and won't ever forget the Henmania buzz. If I ever support someone I always support them, so personally not got a bad word to say about Tim.

I do not like to compare Tim and Andy because they are players at different levels.

What Tim was able to do for a number of years was allow the British public to cross their fingers and hope. Let's not underestimate how important that was, and I hope Kyle goes on to great things, and Jo Konta takes another step, but we have been spoilt by Andy and so let's not underestimate having somebody we can "hope" for! ;)

Certainly hope Andy wins and expect him to prevail, however if he plays well could be another great experience for Kyle! Whilst wouldn't really want them meeting too early more relaxed at this stage and Edmund wasn't likely to reach final if he'd been in other section anyway. However if it doesn't plan would maybe be a bit less gutted than losses to some other players. Whilst don't view Henman as being in the same class I wouldn't make a direct comparison either, however Tim did have some big moments at Wimbledon which seemed very good at the time. However his record in the other slams was usually mediocre (though did reach French/Us Open semis once).

That's a fair comment. I remember being really hacked off when Phillipoussis knocked Tim out of one Wimbledon, it seemed unfair that us Brits weren't allowed to win our own tournament.

If Kyle can have as good a career as Tim then he'll help us through the post Andy blues.

Good question! Overall very happy. I had been following Andy since he won the US Junior Open and it was clear he was special and, potentially, a better player than Tim. It was only a matter of time before he showed that head-to-head. But tinged with sadness that, for Tim, his time had passed.

A little bit like Henry Cooper being beaten by Joe Bugner - although in that case the judges were definitely at fault - you knew you were witnessing the beginning of a new era but, by definition, the end of the old one.

I know Kyle is now ranked at 48 in the world, but he certainly played like a much higher ranked player in the first set. What a pity the second set is a bit of a let down for Kyle.

Andy really turned on the style from a break down won convincingly in the 2nd,well done!:cheer::cheer::clap::clap: However Kyle was impressive for the bulk of the match the match and showing his promise, just couldn't quite stay with Murray in the end and some of the errors understandable.

Loved that match. Good for Kyle giving Andy a really good workout. Very impressive standard, and what was most satisfying of all was that it was 2 Brits producing what was arguably the best match of the tournie so far. Loved the little group of Chinese Andy fans with their 'Let's go Andy, let's go' repeated twice very demurely after every change of ends! Very respectful crowds in Beijing. And bottom line....I have no problem saying I am so pleased Andy got the win!

I have to admit to letting that wee thought creep into my head too but wasn't going to say it out loud!! But I bet Andy was impressed with Kyle's play too. He would be the first to acknowledge that.

Loved that match, particularly 1st set with them going toe to toe and at such a high standard. Think we've got lots to look forward to in hth in the next few years but Kyle will need to be patient for a wee while yet. ;)

It was a great match. Kyle played better in the first set and the first half of the second than he did towards the end so I hope that he remembers that and doesn't get down on himself. He was playing the no. 2 after all. I really thought he was going to take the first set and then Andy take the next 2 but I enjoyed the match and both played well. Next for Murray is ferrer (so glad I was right with that prediction) and for Kyle is a qualy match against a local WC in Shanghai for Kyle.

That was amazing. I watched the first set which was superb, then had to leave when Andy was 0-2 down in the second. A bit frustrating but I told myself that Andy would comfortably win a third set - the way Kyle was playing I couldn't see him dropping a service.
Just 25 minutes later the 12 noon news on my car said Andy was serving at match point!!
So tell me fellow members....did Andy find another gear or did Kyle go into his tired mode ???

Andy on Kyle after the match ...

“He made it very tough for me. He’s improving at a solid pace now. His [Emirates ATP] ranking is moving in the right direction,” said Murray. “He’s getting there. If he keeps going on the path he’s on just now, he’ll be up at the top of the game very soon.”

Watched my recording. Very nervy during tie-break. Glad Andy won that and then showed his class to win last 6 games. But Kyle showed he is going to be a very, very good player. Some areas to improve - like return of serve.

Probably a bit of both I think, LC - as Andy went up a gear, Kyle lost a bit of belief. That doesn't take anything away from the fact that Kyle played brilliantly in the first set and went toe to toe with Andy all the way - I hope he takes the positives from this.

It has to be said I am still in a bit of a grump with Kyle over that. When he was holding the fort in Serbia and its was all on him he did it, but in Glasgow it was almost as though he went in thinking Mr M would do it, and couldn't cope when he was off his stroke against Del Potro, and couldn't. He needed to step up in Glasgow, but didn't.

I am probably being unreasonable, but as I say I am still grumpy about it.

Pella was a man on a mission in Glasgow - I don't blame Kyle.

No, I agree he can't be blamed..but Kyle does tire and his game folds. But then I remember another upandcoming player who needed more stamina in the early years.....and he has done quite well

I thought it was a great match and Kyle chased Andy all the way. He will be in top 50 come Monday and shouldn't have to qualify for tournaments which leaves him more energy to contest these big matches. He is on a sharp learning curve and is doing OK .
