View Full Version : SHANGHAI 2016 R2: Andy's into R3, wins 6'3, 6'2 over Johnson
It's Mr M v Steve Johnson H2H 2:0 to Mr M
31/2016 QF Olympic Tennis Hard Andy Murray Steve Johnson 6-0 4-6 7-6(2) 1.13 - 6.00
41/2015 R32 Shanghai Masters Hard Andy Murray Steve Johnson 6-2 6-4 1.10 - 6.00
I think Andy played him in the second round in Shanghai last year as well. I'm going for another straight sets win for Andy.
Lust like Andy, Johnson's last match before Shanghai was against Dimitrov, losing in the first round of Beijing 5-7 7-6(9) 4-6 after 2:44.

Scheduled "Not before 8pm". So after 1pm our time..depending on the length of the previous matches. I should be home in time to catch most of it.
Steve Johnson can be a tricky customer but the H2H is showing Andy knows how to beat him

Return the big serve and keep it away from his forehand is the basic method.....easier said than done mind.
Certain Andy will be able to come through this one. I will have to record it and watch it later on, avoiding all internet and the forum lol
Good luck :thumbup::thumbup:
The Very Best of Luck Andy!!!:thumbup:
All the very best of luck today, Andy
Andy wins the toss and elects to serve.
6 and a half minutes, one break point saved, but a hold...
Watching with judicious use of the live pause.......
Good serving from 15-30. 3-2
Spycam was at Andy's notes again during the first game. :grrr:

Maybe Andy should put lots of swearwords in the notes - they won't be able to show them then :red devil:

I'm having a fit of giggles everytime the camera closes up on Johnsons face, that moustache is something else....
Andy will be fuming about his notes being on camera again.
Some excellent shots being made by both players.

Unlike Djokovic, Andy's draw doesn't get easier from here. :p But unlike Djokovic (so we're lead to believe), he's supremely confident. ;)

That was exactly my first thought B, but family forum and all that. God, it's awful - just hope it's for movember.
Good lad. Have been hiding, filling up my scrapbook from his Olympic caper. Glad it was stress free. Well done.
Good Job Andy , looking good !!!!

Good Job ??? It was a fantastic, thoroughly professional, calm, confident demolition job !!! So great to see him in full flight like that.
Delighted as I am to see Andy achieve all he has worked for and so thoroughly deserves, I do find myself missing the
up-and-atem, bring on the big boys, bushy haired Andy we all fell for.
Remember that backhand down the line at Wimbledon against Gasquet when he finished up in the front row and was amazed to see the crowd upstanding and cheering for him? Moments like the first Queens win when he went over and kissed his Mum and I was in tears.
Those were the days that we travelled the murraycoaster regularly, but they were so very special.
Now I sit in comfort, admiring professional and unbelievable tennis, confident of the result that will undoubtedly come.
Well done Andy, you've worked so hard for this year :bravo: ( But I do sometimes miss that 'he's gonna be great one day' buzz)
Anyone else feel that way ?

Certainly good to see that it was a comfortable win for Andy and in good form! There was possibility that Johnson could be tricky again particularly in opening match but he never allowed to get close!
Well done Andy.
Good win by Andy. It must have been comforting for him to watch Johnson unravelling on the other side of the net and then to take advantage of it. Johnson may be a lovely guy off the court but he looks angry and mean on it! Thank goodness Andy didn't follow the path of the other players who did well last week (with the exception of the lovely Daveed G) and fall at the first or second hurdle. Interesting match up with Pouille coming up next.

I remember so well the "He's going to be great one day" and insisting to sceptics "He will win a Major" and did enjoy the excitement of the Murraycoasters with the stress, elation, disappointment and joy they brought but liking this more. We still have the excitement and hope that comes with anticipating more grand slams and achieving No 1 status and that's quite enough for me at the moment. We don't know he'll win every tournament do we so there is always some tension before every match? I'm just happy that he's happy in his personal life and playing confidently.....long may it continue. Love being an Andy fan.
Aw Steve Johnson, you tried as best as you could, but Andy was just too good for you!! Well done Andy!! You were class as usual.  Have been out all day, couldn't wait to get home to watch the replay and I really enjoyed watching Andy give Steve the run around. Andy had way too much for him. Tougher task ahead tomorrow...Pouille, but really looking forward to that one. Off now to read what everyone else thought of the match!
Andy Was fantastic today. A great performance, no sign of tiredness or weakness after last week's efforts. I guess that is part of what makes him such a great star. He was clearly the winner from very early on. And in less than an hour and fifteen means he has more in him for a more difficult match tomorrow. I was annoyed to see that after he made his unhappiness about the cameras showing his notes clear (last week in Beijing), this week they were at it again. Zooming in. I'm with just Murray that it is a massive invasion of privacy. It also can't be claimed that they didn't know how he felt about it because he was obvious. He must have realised that was what they were up to because at the next change of ends he turned his bag the other way around and put his towel on top. He really shouldn't have to though!

The first Queens title was 2009 - I believe he beat James Blake on a great sunny day.
The shot against Gasquet was (I believe) in 2008 when he was 2 sets down and recovered to take the match (fourth round if my memory serves me correctly) in five sets.
Let me know if you find it - would love to see it again

The match is on utube under the name Pico D'Andy. It's highlights and the shot you seem to be talking about is about 10:13
