Looking forward to this event. Vienna is beautiful and the venue looks lovely with its plush red velvet seats and plants. Would love to go one year.

Me too RB; this is one City I would love go to (during the tennis tournament of course). Supposed to be very expensive though.
It is on my list too, both the tournie and the city. Would be fantastic. Berdy, Theim and ferrer are slow down to play this event. With some of the other guys heading to Basel instead. Ferrer would be hoping to defend as many points from last year as possible but with Murray the 2014 champion playing, ferrer probably isn't expecting to defend his 2015 title.
Marcus Willis will play Andy and others in the Tie Break Tens Vienna on 23rd October, which is also my sister's birthday.

Marcus Willis has only been given a wild card into qualifying; not the main draw.

Kyle got into the main draw as 4th alternative at Antwerp so a chance he will make it for Vienna, as well. If not he will be (at least) second seed in the qualification
I wonder if Mr M gets to the final of the Tiebreak 10's again, he will suddenly indulge in a little light match fixing again.....:-)
It's a battle of the double "500" winners in the first round.
R1: Klizan
R2: Simon/Garcia-Lopez
QF: Pouille
SF: Thiem/Ferrer
F: Berdych/Tsonga

I don't think Daveed will be too pleased to see that Kyle is his first round opponent!
Andy had his pre-tournament press conference this morning and then visited St Stephens Cathedral. He said Lendl will be joining him for the tour finals in London and then pre-season training in Miami in December. He also confirmed his intention to play Davis Cup next year. Kim is also in Vienna and last night both went to the Vienna State Opera and watched "Armide" which received a 2 star review in the FT with the heading "painfully dull". :sleepy: Andy could still get away with blaming jet lag. ;)

We went to see Tosca at the Vienna State Opera several years ago. Magnificent building and performance. At that time it had an exhibition on Austrian Jewish musicians, many involved with the State Opera, at the time of the Second World War and their fates. Some fled. Most were deported to concentration camps. Very powerful and moving exhibition, following individual stories.

I somehow can't imagine Andy enjoying Armide ..or any opera to be honest. But it's good they get the chance to do things together. The opera house is magnificent with fabulous eco unstick. We heard a Strauss concert there
^ Another triumph for predictive text!
Is there a FTM for this?
There should be. I will set one up. It is quite alright for forum members to set one up.

Tuesday's OOP.

Andy will play on Wednesday which is also Austria's National Day. Maybe he could don the Munich lederhosen in honour. ;)
Berdy been knocked out by Basilishvili in 3 tight sets.
Berdych beaten by Basilashvili's booming backhand! I believe that means Monfils has now qualified for the O2.
Good for Gael - is that the first time he's qualified?

Gael Monfils is the only top player I haven't seen play in the flesh so I am really hoping that he is playing the day I am going - if not I may just have to get some more tickets (which I cant afford !)
Apparently it isn't official Monfils has qualified for the O2. Only a matter of time.
ATP World Tour @ATPWorldTour
#Monfils will qualify for #ATPFinals unless #Goffin or #Cilic wins #Basel… & #Thiem reaches the Vienna Final.
Surprise win for Lopez against Pouille 6-4 2-6 7-5 who was seeded to meet Andy in the QF.

Are you talking about Vienna or the World Tour Finals?
Simon beat GGL 6-4 7-5 and will play the winner of Andy/Klizan on the slowest of slow courts, what fun! :p ;)

Well, it's Andy v Simon - the match that is generally regarded on the twittersphere as the most boring match imaginable - although, having been present at one or two of these, I would say they can be more interesting than you would expect.

Hi guys :) have I missed something or why are Thiem and Troicki just starting? Not that I mind a delay, I have a workman arriving any minute to plaster a wall (the leaking conservatory- still) and then hubby in for dinner!
I think it is because the timings they give are a bit unrealistic. Given the way Troika is going through Thiem, about 17:30-18:00 would be my guess.
Possibly make that the way Troicki WAS going through Thiem!
Thiem goes out to Troicki in straight sets. A shame - he just didn't seem to be at the races today with 44 unforced errors - pressure of playing on his home patch maybe? Andy time!

Poor Domi  Not surprising though - every year we see the players who are scrabbling to secure the last O2 spots get all jittery. Goffin lost as well today and he's Mr Consistency (although it was to Delpo, so more understandable) - and really should have beaten Schwarzmann in Antwerp last week.
Monf will be relieved that all his rivals are going out early. Interesting times!

Pity for Domi but played a lot of matches ,was hoping to see him face Andy in the semis but shouldn't assume match ups are always going to materialise. Not great for home crowd was Melzer also going out earlier, glad Tsonga through in straights though!

Re the time delays, I think it's mainly because the court is so ridiculously slow that it takes about 20 shots for a point to be won, so matches are lasting longer than usual. This is one of the worst courts I have ever seen and it doesn't make for entertaining tennis. It's certainly not playing to Andy's strengths and you can see why Ferrer won it last year. I fear it is going to sap a lot of Andy's energy before Paris next week. I'd be surprised if he played here again.

Genuine question - do players of Andy's status get paid appearance money to attend these so-called smaller, non-mandatory tournaments? I'm not suggesting that Andy is financially motivated to be there, I just wondered how the organisers go about ensuring some headline top players to promote the event.

It was reported in the Austrian press that Andy was receiving a "six figure sum" for taking part in the Erste Bank Open. It's common practice for top players to receive appearance fees for participating in tournaments outwith the slams and master's series. I bet Andy's contract with Queens is a nice little earner.

But would Andy not play Queens anyway? I know he could go to Halle but that seems unlikely.
I can see why an appearance fee would have been needed to convince him to spend a week playing on this surface.

Andy certainly would play but the competition in attracting top players like Nadal and Wawrinka away from Halle means they'll be getting paid then it's only right Andy is likewise and to have him commit for several years is guaranteed income for them.
The Erste Bank Open are making Andy earn his fee. ;) As if 2:40 on court wasn't enough, after his match yesterday Andy played with 10 competition winners to see if they could ACE Andy.

Brilliant match win for Daveed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!......he fought!!!
Daveed looked crocked after his match last night and it was about half as long as this one. I thought he was going to pay for stopping play on MP to challenge just like the 2013 Miami final against Andy but not this time. He awaits the winner of Andy/Isner in the SF.
Must admit didn't think Daveed was walking well after tonight's match.

Certainly good win for David in end though had to did deep, glad Tsonga through fairly comfortably!
I commented on his movement to my OH who also agreed
Karlovic winning 7 - 5, 3 - 2.
Well, well, well, Karlovic gets a fit of nerves and Tsonga breaks and then holds. Now Ivo serving to stay in the second set.
Stay classy Vienna, the loud applause when Karlovic DFs on break point was not necessary. :hmm: So much respect for Ivo for what he's achieving at the age of 37 especially when he receives so much negativity for his style of play.
Am I right in thinking that Karlovic suffered from a pretty serious illness a few years ago? If so, what he is doing at 37 is even more impressive.
Tsonga breaks again and takes the second set. Karlovic seems to have lost belief - it will be an interesting third set.
Karlovic had a type of meningitis in 2013. Full story here (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/22/sports/tennis/mysterious-illness-resolved-karlovic-is-a-winner-again.html). It's a scary tale, he couldn't remember his name for four days.

Thanks, Bardot, that was it. Pretty amazing to come back from that when he must have already been 34 - many players would have just called it a day.
Whilst I like Tsonga I hope Karlovic makes it to the final, at his age he's not going to make too many more!
I rather think that Murray's motivation in Vienna is points based, rather than pounds based this year. I rather think he would have played for nothing this year. Gap now 615:-) he always gives full value though. I remember 2014 in Schenzen when he was also after points, and by reaching the final he had got enough points to qualify for the O2, but still fought tooth and nail to win the final.
So Tsonga goes through; what's his H2H with Andy?
Finally Tsonga takes it but what a messy match with so many chances for both players. It lasted 2:34 although the points were short there were a lot of them.

A bit scrappy if tight but glad Tsonga got the win in the end.
So many chances for Karlovic - he will have nightmares about that match.

15:3. Tsonga 3 wins have all been on hard court. Last win in Aug 2014
