View Full Version : BASEL 2016 - 24-30 October
Basel could have a new champion this year. In the past decade the title has only been won by three men. Roger Federer (7 times champion) is obviously out this year, djoko (won 1 title here), does not have this tournament in his schedule so he isn't playing and Delpo (won 2 titles here). Delpo has accepted wildcards into both Shanghai and Stockholm so despite his wins here in 2012/2013 he may not get a wildcard into the draw. He is on the alternate list but o my 9th place so there would have to be lots of withdrawals for him to go straight into the main draw. As he has it listed on his schedule it is likely that he intends to play quailes.
After retiring in Japan and withdrawing from Shanghai, kei nishikori intends to make his return for the tournie in Basel. Other players in action as it stands, include Nadal, Stan, raonic, cilic and Goffin. Whilst Stan and raonic have qualified for London, nadal is yet to make it and Cilic and Goffin are in 10th and 11th place.
I read that Rafa is going to play doubles with Zim in Basel.

The line up for Basel looks significantly stronger than Vienna where only 3 of the top 11 in the Race will play.
To his many Swiss tennis fans Basel will not be the same this year without Roger to cheer on. No pizza party for the ballkids unless Roger makes an appearance to support his home tournament.
And now no Rafa either :crying:

What is up with Raonic? He's just lost to Berankis 6-3 3-6 3-6. When he's not getting easy points on his serve on the FH is flopping there's not much left. Remembering Berankis lost to Millman in Rio 0-6 0-6.

Perhaps he is carrying an injury. Stan lost the first set to Chiudinelli but now racing away with the 2nd. Berdych and Pouille out in Vienna and Robert BA struggling against Jurgen Melzer. All the players freezing at the end of the season. Let us hope Andy races away with it again.

Fingers crossed!
Mischa of the Zverevs gave Stan the run around in Basel tonight! He has beaten him....6-1 in the third!. Wow! And Nishi beat Delpo earlier.

Two surprising results.
Remarkable win for M.Zverev over Wawrinka 6-2 5-7 6-1 who ran out of ideas in how to play him in the final set. Serve & volley is alive and well. I think this win gives Zverev a special exemption entry into Paris.
Fantastic win for Mischa - so pleased for him.
Where has this Zerev been? Only just heard of him recently

His long history of injuries is probably the reason why. From twitter: 2009 - right wrist injury, 2010 - broken ribs, 2010 - disc prolapse, 2011 - back problems, 2013 - torn patella tendon & 2014 - left wrist surgery. He was ranked #45 in 2009 before all these problems. A pity he's too late for the Best Comeback Award.
Maybe his younger brother's success has spurred him on. It looks as though he will play Cilic tomorrow - go Mischa!
So close for Gilles Muller who had 2 MPs on Nishikori's serve at 5-4 in the second set, the first was saved with an amazing lob.
A pity for Muller. Zverev has just broken Cilic to lead 3-2 in the first set.
Zverev wins the first set 6-4!:cheer:
Rats - Cilic recovers to take the second set. It's a great match though - a real contrast of styles. I'm very impressed with Mischa Zverev- a great serve and volleyer.
Cilic survives and goes through to the final. A great match though - I'll continue to follow Mischa Zverev with interest.

Pity Mich couldn't quite sustain it,though Cilic better in the end and was great win over Stan yesterday! Muller also came close though was glad Kei found a way.
Will be rooting for Nishikori tomorrow. Not a fan of Cillic for obvious reasons.

Me too, cannot take to Cilic. Do hope he doesn't make WTF. Would rather Berdych made it.

Not a fan of either, but my dislike of Berdych is irrational, my dislike of Cillic on the other hand is completely rational, so am with you on the Berdych front.
The final is currently on the Sky red button. Not that anyone would want to switch over now ;)
Sadly, Cilic beat Nishikori 6-1, 7-6. I think that means that Cilic will probably qualify for the WTF.
Since Bjorkman joined, Cilic has won his first Master's 1000 title and first 500 series title, quite an achievement. Should he make the tour finals, I wouldn't be disappointed if Cilic was in Djokovic's group.
I think Cilic was pretty lucky to come up against an exhausted Andy in the final at Cinci. I agree, though, he has done well recently but was Bjorkman with him by Cincinnati? I thought he had joined him later.
The partnership started just before Cincinnati although Bjorkman wasn't there and having said, looking at Jonas's instagram, I don't think he was in Basel either. Whatever works. :big grin:
