View Full Version : VIENNA 2016 Rd, 1: Andy's through 6'3, 6'7, 6'0
Klizan's 2016 season is like no other. He has 1230 ranking and 1000 are from his 2 remarkable 500 wins in Rotterdam & Hamburg. In contrast he has lost in the first round of 11 tournaments including all 4 slams. Here's hoping he doesn't rediscover his 500 form. This will be the first time he's played Andy.
With a ranking like that, it should be a comfortable win for Andy.
I always worry when it's the first time Andy plays an opponent - it sometimes takes him a while to suss them out.

Martin Klizan can fefo be dangerous. Saw him play Rafa a couple of years ago St Wimbledon

Good luck champ!
All the best of luck, Andy :thumbup::thumbup:
Preceding match has only just finished its first set tie-break, won unsurprisingly by John Isner. Hopefully this'll mean I'll make it home in time for some Murray magic!
Very best of luck Andy. :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

Means I've time to hoover....wick!
Time to fit the ironing in I reckon!
It looks like Lopez is going to win the second set.
1 set all, 1 game all, and that's hometime. Nice!

Deliciano being very obliging Hawkeye!
5-5. A bit longer to wait for Andy!
Isner wins 7-6, 3-6, 7-6. Bring it on Andy!! :cheer:
Andy's prospective QF opponent is known (Isner) before he's played his first match.

Definitely been kept waiting for a long, long time. Hope Andy does better than Ronnie O'Sullivan did earlier!

Come on Andy!!! Let's go!!!
3 bps saved - well held, Andy.
Early holds always good 1-0
Good serving to hold. 2-1

Good for him.
I think Andy almost smiled after that back & forth point. 3-1
From 40-0 to a break - great stuff!
Good lad takes his chance
3-1

Sweet cross court
holds for 4-1

Fantastic shot to hold, now 4-1. Klizan's tactics appear to be drop-shotting, or to just slap the ball back as hard as he can and hope it stays in. Not working so far!
Klizan holds from 0-30. 4-2

McNet came to the rescue twice in that game. ;) 6-3
Just been out with my furry friend. Excellent news to return to.

Get in!:cheer::cheer::cheer:
What a volley to bring up BP. 1-0
Andy was after Klizan's vote in the Stefan Edberg award in that last game. ;)
An insurance break would be nice.
Okay - not to be - safe hold and then break again.
Andy's best service game of this set. 4-2

Come on Andy!!!!!!
Klizan holds to love. 4-5
Little dip in Andy's rhythm. Not worried though.
Andy's mind wandering at the prospect of consecutive matches against Simon & Isner perhaps. ;)
Perhaps he's hungry and ready for his dinner! He had to wait a long time for the Isner match to finish.
Forces the error to break. 6-5
Pity, have to find your TB form Andy. 6-6
Tie break. I was expecting an easier match for Andy.

He just doesn't look totally relaxed to me...but he should pull it out now
Wins that amazing point and then loses the next 4 and the set. 6-7
Andy let that set go big time.
Klizan wins the second set. What happened?!
At least that endless talk of consecutive sets won is over.

My commie just said Andy had won the previous 24 sets.
A couple of wishy washy service games there.
I would think of going for 3/4 first serves if Klizan is unloading so much on Andy's second serve and Andy has lost the first serve.
This is still the day session in Vienna.
Rats, when I last looked he was ahead in the Tzb. Let's hope it hacks him off.
Oops, didn't expect that.

This is unexpectedly hard going. If anyone has seen Andy's first serves, please return to Vienna.
Cmon Muzz!
Good lad, good start, thought this match would have been over ages ago!
Andy's kept his first serves for the third set, holds to love. 3-0

Well, he's served for it twice and tie break - lets hope he makes it next time. Perhaps he brought out the wrong notes !!
Get it finished before Bake-Off please Andy!
Andy gets the break on the 5th BP. 4-0
We've become too complacent over the last few week, folks, expecting a two sets win all the time. Klizan's played some great stuff but there's no way that Andy's going to lose this, especially with an insurance break.

Yeah some first serves have reappeared!
Nearly there Mr M.
Andy gets the win - eventually - well done :yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:
Oh yes! H O O R A Y !!! :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:
Andy cruises the final set. An entertaining match with some amazing defence by Andy.
He obviously was not amused by losing the 2nd set............!!!!
And now for the sea of big tennis balls!!
:cheer::cheer:
Well done Andy!
Thanks Andy, well done, now let's see if another Andy can get the win!
......and the lovely Gilles!
I think that was the equivalent if sending a stroppy child to stand in the corner.
The commie described it as a thoroughly entertaining match! Eh? I actually felt sorry for the paying audience. Klizan was useless, and Andy seemed tired.

I thought Klizan played really aggressive unpredictable tennis and thought it was entertaining.
What did Klizan do at the net - did i imagine this but did he kiss Andy? Andy was smiling..Perhaps he wouldn't be!
Gap now 870 - I bet SIMON was thinking at the end of the second "I might have a chance here", by the end of the 3rd the brief flicker of hope will have been extinguished.
:yahoo::yahoo::yahoo: Order is restored with a bagel. I thought it was an entertaining match with some great shots from both players but never doubted that Andy would win.
Phew, that was hard work (watching anyway). Playing someone for the first time can be troublesome, particularly a guy who shuts his eyes and let's rip a la Klizen. At least Andy knows what's coming from Gilles. ;)

Although I felt the win was never in doubt, Andy certainly was below par, especially in the second set. Maybe it was the court surface, maybe playing an unusual opponent. ... he certainly made heavy weather of it but came sailing through in the end.
Reckon Gilles is wondering if it is tiredness, or dreading the positive reaction tomorrow

Not a vintage performance though that wasn't necessary and 2nd set bit iffy, however Andy stepped up when needed even if Klizan couldn't sustain the challenge, well done! Will be different contest v Giles and sure Andy will be more consistent, come on!

As James says above, not Andy's best performance but job done.
Bit of an annoyingly long match at this stage of the tournament but job done and that's what counts.

I hope the 3rd set was a sign that Andys' serve is coming back it was bad at tiebreak tens as well as the 1st 2 sets today. Don't know why it goes off like that, dropping his shoulder again.
I didn't think it was nearly as bad a performance from Andy as most people here obviously did. It was **** or bust with Klizan and he managed to land some spectacular shots. I accept it wasn't a vintage performance from Andy but it always takes him some time to sort out a new opponent - I didn't think it was ever in doubt that Andy would win.

Good stuff :) a win, probably longer than we, and Andy, wanted but glad he didn't hang about in the 3rd!
I thought Andy was very solid and secure in most of the match...the little dip was really only in the latter half of the second set. Even though it went to the third set, I never doubted for one minute he was ever going to lose that match. And I also think as he is more familiar with the Simon game he will be absolutely fine later today. He will know what to expect. Go Andy!

Somebody must have reminded Andy about Bake Off.. hence the bagel! (groan) ;)
The only surprising things about that match to me were:-
1) The first match after a break he usually gets broken in his first game - he didn't.
2) Playing someone he hasn't played before sometimes costs him a set.
3) Wining two 500 titles this year means Klizan obviously has got a lot talent in there.
4) I suspect the amount of effort he needed to take that second set meant he had zilch left for the 3rd, which suggests to me that it was less a case of Mr M playing badly, more his opponent flumoxing him a bit.
5) Mr M has to be knackered, it's not just playing lots of tournaments, it's the fact he will persist in getting to the end of them - usually the finals.
I also imagine being reunited with Kim and Sophia probably sent him a bit emotional. The poor toad has also got "The Nation wants a no 1 male singles player - gimme, gimmie, gimme" pressure. Aka Wimbledon 2. Plus the fact he really wants it himself pressure.
Lots of the other top players are dropping like flies at the moment.
Personally I would have been suprised if he lost. If he loses to Simon because he runs out of gas, I will be disappointed but not that suprised.
