Andy Murray - World #1.

Milos Raonic was unable to play the Semi-Final, giving Andy a walkover into the Final.
Therefore, Mr Murray will be #1 player in the ATP rankings on Monday 7th November 2016.

Not perhaps the way Andy might have wanted things to happen today ... but he now has a day to rest before playing in the Final and a chance to add a few more points!!!

I remember when the 18 year old Andy, at his first Wimbledon, defeated Steps, then ranked hundreds of places above him. He won me over that day and from then I have never deserted him...have supported him all the way. Such a joy to see him reach the pinnacle of his career now. This is a great moment for Andy, for us fans and for the sport of tennis. Never have we had such an era of tennis and are very unlikely to witness it again...that's been said many times but so so true. I relish and treasure every moment.

Amazing achievement by Andy to be world number 1 - what an accomplishment! He will undoubtedly be thrilled about this. Also his family, team - and fans around the world too. Richly deserved.

I would think that this is another piece to fall into place in terms of further cementing his place as one of the very best to have played the game. He now has another nice thing to focus on - win some slam titles whilst world number 1. No-one would deserve an Australian Open title or three more than him, for starters. A French Open title would also be amazing - a career slam perhaps the icing on the cake!

Not fussed at all about the walkover match today. Number 1 ranking can never be about just 1 match. The best things about the day off today is that it will give Andy valuable rest time for the final - plus one less match to play prior to the world tour finals.

I think it has to be worth mentioning that Djokovic's drop in form has to be one of the major turnarounds of the season. I doubt I was alone in thinking that when he won the French Open he was on course to clean up most titles like he did last year. Great that Andy was so well-placed to take advantage.

Also for once Andy hasn't achieved a milestone that has been a 60, 70 year drought for British men's tennis. He has achieved something that no British play has ever done before. Amazing.

His win-loss record since Rome was befitting of a world number one. He has a golden opportunity to kick on from here and further add to his already-remarkable success. Hopefully he can do that.

JerryD

Fantastic and deserved from Andy!! It is a shame that there wasn't the excitement of a match to win it but it doesn't deflect from the achievement at all. He has absolutely earned this. It has been a career year for him and an outstanding lay six months. Can't wait to watch him walk on the court in the O2 as the world number 1!!! Then of course see him win the world tour finals too. Fingers crossed.

Just amazing. This has made my day so I can't imagine how over the moon and proud he must be!! Time to celebrate fo me, I don't have a match to play tomorrow lol

A win today is important for Andy's ranking wise for yearend #1, the 400 points would more than offset the 275 DC points dropping at the end of the month. I am expecting a comfortable win but after other shocks taking nothing for granted.

No I have looked there is nothing from Djokovic directly. Even Feddykins tweeted him - mind you the cynic in me thinks that he is relieved that Mr M has put the Kybosh on Djokovic beating his streak at continuous No 1 ranking. However can't blame him, those of us on here who dislike Cillic (including me), were cheering him on against Djokovic in the QF.

I read, in today's Daily Mail, about why Andy should get his knighthood and they believed the same people, who called for his knighthood last year, would do the same. Also, they reckoned Andy's the red hot favourite to win this year's Sports Personality.

When Nadal won his 9th French Open someone tweeted Andy why he hadn't congratulated Rafa, he replied that as friend he contacted him directly. It could be the same with Djokovic and it's well known that Nadal's social media is run by his PR so more than likely he's contacted Andy in person.

I just don't care about anything else at the moment, tough draw at WTF is irritating, but nobody knows what is going to happen or what little gems life is going to throw at people. Because of a group of disparate and unimaginable occurrences (Cillic beating Djokovic), Murray got to the No 1 ranking. Nothing and nobody can ever take that away from him now. If he trips over Maggie or Rusty, and ends up out for months with a broken leg, the moment might have passed. Look at Fed hurting himself getting out of the bath. Who could have foreseen that?

Better a No 1 ranking in the hand than in the bush. Murray seized the moment. It's his for all time now.

If he loses it back to Djokovic because of the draw at the WTF, I have every confidence he will get it back again in 2017.

If Djokovic loses tomorrow Andy is number 1 at year end

If Djokovic reaches the final Andy has to win the tournament to be year end number 1 otherwise Djokovic will take over the number 1 year end spot.

Projections, if Andy reaches Australian final or Djokovich doesn't, Andy likely to stay #1 till April/may at least, A win there and he stays top for months

has Aus F (1200) to defend, then only 90 in March (Indian Wells/Miami) 360 in April (Monte Carlo SF) but 1600 in May (Madrid F/Rome W) and 1700 June (RG F Queens W)

Andy could get a small boost in Doha at the beginning of 2017 where Djokovic is defending 250 points and Andy none. This will be the first 250 Andy has played since Munich last year. All his current points won at 500s and above.

So any points Andy gains and/ or Djokovic loses will increase the lead. Less so with 500 pointer before the American swing as Djokovic did not win this.

Wasn't sure where to post this! Opted for the number 1 ranking thread.

What a terrific season Andy has had. Winning 9 titles in a season where he became a father and took over a month out of the tour - and can discount the US Spring swing too (ring-rustiness, definitely!).

Basically he won those titles in just over 6 months when he won 63 matches out of 67 played. Rome, Queen's, Wimbledon, Olympics, China, Shanghai, Paris, and ATP Finals.

Phenomenal!

Thrilled that he beat Djokovic in the world tour finals. It just puts a lovely seal on the year, further enhances his number 1 status - and sets things up so nicely for next year.

He ended the year with 78 wins to 9 defeats. A personal best.

An odd stat is that in every one of those 87 matches, he broke his opponent's serve at least once.

The social media is awash with congratulations - a very popular player. Ranging from all walks of life too - not just tennis folk - a clear sign of how many fans he's garnered over the years.

Martina Navratilova tweeted about how much of a big deal it is for Andy to be Year End number 1 - and how well-deserved it was for him. Andy is just the 17th player to achieve this since rankings began in 1973 - that's how much of an achievement it is! He's been stellar.

If ever Andy needs confirmation of his technique under pressure then he should watch on repeat the MP he saved against Raonic. Almost the perfect point given he missed his first serve but the second serve was deep then two FHs out wide stretching Raonic on his FH followed by a FH to Raonic's BH forcing him to run the width of the court then an "easy" high BH volley put away at the net. Brilliant, that's his #1 ranking right there. :shades:

Another person who deserves 'bigging up' (as David put it on the other thread) is Mr Damian Fahy, the surgeon who operated on Andy's back. I truly don't think Andy could have got the top spot without the surgery, so brave of Andy to take the gamble, but what a gift Mr Fahy gave him. Imagine having to keep steady hands while under the insane pressure of operating on Andy Murray's spine - incredible.:worship:

Alis

I agree RB, the decision to have surgery was an incredibly brave decision for Andy to make but, from what he has said recently, it would seem that he was in constant pain and probably would not have been able to continue without it. Well done to all the team that performed the surgery and assisted with Andy's rehab - we all owe them a great debt of gratitude. It would have been so sad if Andy had not been able to achieve his true potential - it's just a shame that it had to happen just as he came into his peak playing years. I am quite sure that Novak would not have been able to pull away from the pack as he did if Andy had been fully fit and I don't think Djoko or his team have ever publicly acknowledged that fact. In my view Andy's achievements are all the more remarkable because they have been accomplished in spite of a major setback. In the same way I take my hat off to Delpo for his tenacity and determination in the face of adversity and I will be rooting for Argentina to win the Davis Cup this weekend!

I'm sure the last thing Djokovic is thinking about is playing more tennis but given he's not scheduled to play until Indian Wells, he might consider adding 1 or even 2 tournaments to his schedule before then. Yes looks right, also unless Nole adds extra tournaments, it is impossible for him to gain any points until the clay court season and any points Andy gets or Nole drops if he doesn't win IW and Miami will only increase the amount and probably make it almost impossible for him to gain it until after Roland Garros. As for rankings are we sure we aren't missing something holding onto number one till at least may with so little fuss seems way to easy

Up to the end of Roland Garros, Novak has 5700 points to defend and Andy just 3250. With the lead now 1625 and potentially over 3000 by the end of Melbourne, Andy could miss all tournaments up to Paris and have no concerns about being overtaken.

By playing Dubai, Andy actually has a chance to add to the points he won at the same time last year when he was paternity leave!

So yeah, absolutely no worries now about who is Number 1 till June at the very least.

Just to say I am not sure Nole will try and go fishing for points here and there in extra tournaments. He has a "quality of tennis" rather than "quantity of points" problem which will only be solved for him by getting his confidence back and his "head in the game" and he and those around him will want to manage or minimize other shock results.

And as I have said many times, there are really two ATP tours, one for most of the players and another, more select group, who get to the later stages of the Masters and Slams, who minimize their other tournaments to have the energy to cope with the demands of the principal tournaments. The top few players expect to be playing over 20 GS best of five set matches a year. Never mind the masters - Andy and Nole have been making it hard for other players to win Masters. Yes, play before the AO to get some match play, play Queens or similar to get grass court match play, one or two local tournaments (Nole), perhaps a 500 in Asia if you are "there", or a warm up to IW and Miami, but not much else really.

Andy is 1715 ahead which Guarantees him to stay until 8th May, even if Andy wins no points and Nole wins all 4 ATP1000's he is entered for
To be #1 until after Roland Garros, Andy needs another 1635 points, for Nole to drop 1635 or a combination (5 ATP1000s each + Andy in a 500)
To be number 1 up to and including Wimbledon, Andy needs a further 1700 making 3335 or for Nole to Drop or a combination of both (Andy down for queens 500 as well as RG)

Seems pretty good odds Andy will be #1 at Wimbledon
Obviously Nole could enter extra events but I think that is unlikely, Andy next up in Dubai (27th Feb) also present Stan and Roger

Josephine

Yes, but Andy has been a finalist there for so many years, he is usually right up there from the start. He needs to keep getting points. Second half of the year Rafa and Fed could rake them in with nothing to defend. And Andy will have mountains to defend then....

WimbledonWestie
09-03-2017, 07:01
The race starts at zero though so everyone accumulates points every time they win a match regardless of how they did same time previous year. It's the rankings that are affected by having to defend points. That's why the two can be very different until it comes near the end of the season. It's only at end of the tour finals that both match up.

Andy has earned 840 points so for in 2017 compared with 1245 at the same stage last year and only has Miami left to make a killing before he enters a run of 10 tournaments to the end of the year where his worst performance in 2016 was a QF at the US Open and a SF in Monte Carlo. All the rest he was either winner or runner-up. He missed Canada last year so there will be an opportunity there but I wonder if he'll add a 500 to his schedule like Washington the week before Montreal.

This of course assumes that the next generation players do not upset his apple cart. Kyrgios, Dimitrov, Zverev and Thiem might have something to say.

According to the Live Rankings website (http://live-tennis.eu/en/atp-live-ranking), Andy will only add points if he wins tomorrow (and replace 90 points from Monte Carlo) but another live rankings website disagrees and the 90 points won so far are accumulated. Andy has 9890 and Rafa 6005 a lead of 3885 , Rafa (or Andy or Stan on 5695) can win another 1280 in Roland Garros.

Andy will loose his 500 for Queens and 2,000 for Wimbledon whilst Rafa has nothing to Loose and Stan only 45 to Loose.

In other words to stay #1 after Wimbledon Andy cannot afford Rafa to score more then 1380 extra points or Stan to score more than 1735 extra in remaining RG through to Wimbledon

If the worst happens at RG that gap closes to just 205 points spare on Rafa, but lets be positive an Andy Dom final would be a terrific boost!

I was pointing out his lead will reduce not that he couldn't win them back, just stating that Rafa and Stan will have chances with them having nothing to drop even if Andy wins that they are likely to close the gap. If you look at the race, Rafa is obviously the main threat but anyone who can string wins together out of Stan, Nole and Roger will also have chances to close the gap in the coming weeks, them splitting the points would obviously be good for Andy and retaining #1

I don't see Federer being a threat for the Number 1 ranking. I'm fairly certain he'll continue to play the minimum number of tournaments he has to. I have no doubt he'll skip one of Cincy or Toronto. Novak just doesn't seem to have the heart for the battle at the mo and may well take a break. So the big question is Rafa - how will he take to grass this year? How much will all these clay court matches have taken out of him? Will he still be as effective on hard courts later in the season? Will his body hold up?

If Andy is still Number 1 after Wimbledon then he has a great chance to take it to the end of the year with not so much to defend in the next 3 big tournaments.

Lifted from elsewhere these are the rankings based on Wimbledon's seeding formula (100% of points in last 12 months & 75% of points in the previous 12 months)

1.Andy 11930
2.Djokovic 7395
3.Nadal 7318
4.Wawrinka 6490

As long as Andy is still number 1 and if they both get that far, of course! Even with the extra weighting for grass, I'm not sure Fed can make it to number 2 seed, can he? I'm hoping other members, who know far more about it than I do, will put us right.

It is not beyond Federer getting to #2 with wins in the next 2 weeks counting double he could add 500+1000 and he already has 1620 grass bonus (sf 2016, F 2015) so whilst he would be #5 as of Monday, winning those two tournaments would make him #2 unless Rafa wins Queens

Current ranking points remaining after queens with bonus (100% last 12 months + 75% of best, previous 12 months)
Andy 9,390 +2,540 11,930 max possible 12,930 (w queens)
Rafa 7,285 + 33 7,318 max possible 8,318 (w queens)
Stan 6,175 + 315 6,490 max Possible 7,490 (w queens)
Nole 5,805 + 1,590 7,395
Roger 4,765 + 1,620 6,385 max possible 7,885 (W stuttgart W Halle)
Milos 4,150 + 1,267 5,417 max possible 6,417 (w queens)

Lifted from elsewhere these are the rankings based on Wimbledon's seeding formula (100% of points in last 12 months & 75% of points in the previous 12 months)

1.Andy 11930
2.Djokovic 7395
3.Nadal 7318
4.Wawrinka 6490
5.Federer 6385

There will be points to be added from upcoming tournaments in Stuttgart, Halle & Queens so looking at this, it seems Wawrinka is the one most likely to drop out of being seeded in the top 4 at Wimbledon.

I was working them out, glad you have got exactly the same numbers! As I put 2 wins also mean Roger would get #2 above Rafa ...unless Rafa wins Queens
